  • Just as the title indicates, this is a simple tutorial on making a good pot of coffee over a fire. I also talk about how the best things in life are often the simplest things in life that we take the time to do right.

@@mike.p.1400 Try sitting in L.A. traffic since you have the right mindset. My mindset is getting to work on time because my family depends on me to do it. You think Ukrainians are pretending to be content with their situation just because they have the right mindset? Those people are thinking about staying alive along with their loved ones. It's easier to enjoy your life journey when you don't have anything else to worry about. You have already paved your own road at this man's point.

Gave my grandpa a Mr. Coffee years ago went to see him the next weekend, it was sitting up high on a shelf in the kitchen, could tell it was used (once), I asked him why it wasn't on the counter. He only had a few words for me. "I don't drink instant coffee either". Always made his coffee in a coffee pot or peculator, pure grounds and time and patients. Rethought my future gifts. When my mom asked him why he didn’t use it he said it didn’t get the coffee hot enough because he liked it “piping hot.” He used a percolator on the stove.

Best coffee experience for me was my percolator over a fire in the Wasatch Mtns with plain old Folgers in the 1960s. Now I am a geezer and we grind our coffee fresh every morning from fresh roasted beans from Bisbee AZ's Old Bisbee roasters, delivered by mail weekly. No better coffee, but the experience is not so magical as that old campfire coffee. When we go up the mountain and combine the two, heaven is close at hand. I am greatful for Dewayne's simple approach to life.

My friends and I go camping about 4 times a year, usually on a friends land sometimes at a hunting lodge (yeah, not really "camping" but no cell or wifi or stoves). First one up is responsible to get coffee going (usually me). Nice sitting by a creek, perc in the coals, peace and quiet. Once everyone is up, we all get breakfast going (about 6 or 8 of us), more coffee made, games (and liquor) come out, then dinner. Life is simple, when you decide it should be!

I would get up at 3am, fill my french press with water. Microwave for 5 minutes while brushing my teeth. Grind up some good whole bean. Set up my press. Take shower, get dressed. My coffee has been brewing all the while. Press and go. Sipping some strong brew easing down the road. I'm retired now. Same routine but now my doggy (big black German Shepherd) gets me up every day about 7 or 8. Best alarm clock in the world. lol

"Customize your life"- I love that and it’s so true. If you want to control your anxiety and your stress, slow down. That’s what I’ve been doing for several years and it works great, but I still get caught in the ways of the conditioned thinking, but I’m aware of that right away and I stop…and slow down.
I get up at 4:30 am everyday (including weekends) and I have a routine that it’s enjoyable and don’t require rushing. I get up, feed my cats, brew my coffee ( similar to Dwayne’s way) enjoy my cup of coffee, do the bathroom thing, take a shower and do everything in the NOW. I’m not thinking about work, I’m not thinking about how much work I have to do today, I don’t care nor think about it, those thoughts aren’t allowed in my brain. I simply enjoy the moment with a soothing instrumental music in the background while I do my routine. That’s my meditation method, stay in the present moment because that’s where I live.
I don’t live an hour away from now. I live right now.
I do this all the way until I get to work at 6:30 am ( I don’t have to be there until 7:30am, though) I get there and begin my day preparing what’s to be delivered that day.
I’m in logistics, so by the time employees start arriving, I have everything ready and we open for business. And I try my best to stay in the present and do things following steps I developed in order to reduce stress in employees and customers. We don’t jump from 1 to 5. To get to 5 you have to go through 2, 3 and 4 and this makes the day at work more enjoyable.
I love watching Dwayne’s videos. He uses every second of every one of his videos to say something interesting and helpful. That’s very valuable.
    Stay present my friends.

I remember way back when everyone had a percolator. When that thing got cranking, it would fill up the entire house with that angelic coffee smell. At my Grandpa's house I noticed that he would pour some of the steaming hot coffee in the saucer, blow on it for a second and either drink it right from the saucer or dump it back into the cup. At my tender age, I didn't realize that after the percolator is done, that's some scalding hot coffee. To this day, I want my coffee sipping hot, not luke warm that you get in a restaurant. Nice job on the video!

I really appreciated when Dewayne talked about checking out 'Yellowstone' from the library, hearing it'd mirror his way of life and appeal to him, only to find it's just Hollywood's glitzy take with no resemblance.
It's a cool reminder of how real life, with its genuine, custom-made moments, often beats those scripted versions we see on screen.
It's neat how he encourages us to seek out the authentic stuff over the flashy but fake.
Thank you for the reminder to slow down.

I have consumed a lot of coffee in my life but the one most memorable was with my mom in 1983. We had just purchased some acreage near Chevron Canyon, Az and took a ride to check out the area. At midday I built a small fire and brewed some coffee similar to what you did in a pot like yours. While sitting in the shade we ate and drank coffee on our property for the first time. I have never had a better cup of coffee. Along with the aroma of the coffee there was the smell of the pinion pines, crows making noise and a nice breeze. Mom and I shared a lot of coffee and whiskey over the years but that day remains a treasured memory.

Words of wisdom is all i can say. Born in 67 so Im in between the new and the old but every day I turn on the tv, I know which direction I want to head for. I dont care if Brittany has a meltdown in a hotel room or any other stupid hollywood stuff. I care about where im heading and how to spend my next 30 years god willing. This whole world needs to slow down, let the coffee brew, chat it up with your neighbors in the meantime, spend a saturday fishing in a creek even if you dont catch something. America isnt doomed, we just have our prioroties screwed up, this country is strong but its heading down a path that wont allow people to enjoy the 80 some years they have on earth, at least not how our forefathers did. Today is all about 'i want it now', relax, slow down. Anyhow I came here for the coffee, I left with a few words of wisdom that hit deep and couldnt be any truer. Btw, that coffee looked delicious. Subscribed by the time you hit that stogie.

    You are right Dewayne.
Even in urban set-up it's not too hard to make REAL coffee.
A turkish coffee pot (I highly recommend smaller ones, no more than 2 expresso cups capacity), turkish coffee grade grinder (or buy it ground), a stovetop - et voila!
Just make sure you watch it like a hawk and take it off the stove before it all runs out.
And remember - the grinds are there at the bottom of the pot - careful as you pour it out.
    P.S.
I only call it turkish because that's how it was introduced to me.
It can be rightfully called Greek, Armenian or Arabic - whichever you prefer.

Howdy from the UK! I have only recently started to take my coffee without milk/cream to reduce the amount of lactose/sugar I consume in a day, it is scary how much I was drinking in my four or five lattes a day. It is taking a bit of time (no problem there) but I am gradually appreciating the different flavours and nuances in real coffee which milk tends to mask. I still can't do it without sugar or sweeteners though!! Of course, being a Brit a good cup of tea wins hands down :)

So much sage advice... thank you, sir! I frequently reflect on what you once said about riding the bronc you were given and it helps me accept my situation and keep moving.

I love your good old fashioned common sense. I took a couple of old friends out back, made a simple camp fire and coffee.
Took out my barlow jackknife and started whittling. My friends said, It's been over 40yrs. since we did this. I made a gift of the extra old school barlows I got for each of them. We all hade the best time (remember whening) and catching up on everything else.
The simple thing fall by the wayside fare to often.
Thank you for all the work it take to make your videos.
    God bless.

Dwayne and family, thanks for sharing your lifestyle with us. I am retired on a small cow farm in north Texas among the cedar and post, live, and white oaks. You campfire moments are wise and helpful information for our crazy fast and out of controlled world today. Nothing like the simple things like campfires, the smell of wood smoke, and campfire cooking to put life into perspective. Thanks for spending your time showing the rest of us the importance of smelling the roses or campfire burning. New subscriber and looking forward to many enjoyable hours of your videos. Thanks.

I came across your channel and it is like sitting by the fire with my late father.
The two of you are from a time that we have set aside and forgotten about! We move so fast and are so consumed by convenience....
Love your videos as they speak a truth that unfortunately has been set aside.
Why are we all rushing to the end of the trip when the journey is the most important part?
    Slow and easy!
    God bless and stay safe.
