Crazy how this is still the best ever looking CG character! 10 years and they still haven’t surpassed it
Crazy how the best looking CG character owes it to a dirty Styrofoam cup
crazy how they made young jack sparrow look like an alien too
@@jaumegenaro7673 While I am not going to excuse young Jack. It's way ''easier'' to make a good CGI monster like Davy Jones compared to a CGI human. Even well over a decade later we still struggle with convincing full CGI humans. Example, the same studio that did Davy Jones did Tarkin in Star Wars and ILM is definitely one of the, if not, the best visual effect studio in the world. And still Tarkin looked...off. It's really impressive tech that wasn't possible in such a scale 15 years ago, but it's still hitting that uncanny valley feeling. The way the skin stretches, the lips move, the eyes reflect,... All little details we humans notice and spot easier compared to non-human faces. We do have way more success these days with using AI and visual effects to (de-)age actors, but still haven't managed to capture that full CGI face.
Anyway, I don't want to take anything away from Davy Jones. It's indeed very, very impressive CGI especially considering it's over 15 years old now.
@@bd5067 I mean young Tony in civil war was incredible, and leagues better than young Sparrow.
I think Thanos from Infinity War is a worthy succesor
Best looking CG character ever
Except that he has anger issues.
He has ADHD
@lolseagull honestly the only part where he looked a little “off” in the movies was in dead mans chest after the kracken sinks that ship that will was on
Gollum
More like ugliest
Let's remember that Bill Nighy's motion-capture acting was at the heart of the character; the nuances of his body language, posture, facial expressions, etc. ...
Davy’s anger issues are also part of Bill’s performance through motion capture.
Yes, of course they were.
but it's all just bill nighy
also by the animators
especially emphasizing the subtle movement of his face with the tentacles
Theatre trained
That's beside the point.
How Bill Nighy has never been nominated for half of the awards out there is beyond me!
yeah, true!
Agree!!
Agree, he got teen choice awards for both potc movies but the Academy ignored him somehow
@@coralineparmentierpianistsame reason Andy cerkis was never nominated. CGI characters by academy standards don’t count as solely work of an actor, it counts as work of an actor and visual team
Better late than never. Bill Nighy is an Academy Award nominated actor.
Honestly, I could watch the entire movie without the CGI for Davy Jones and still take it completely seriously. Bill Nighy just embodies the character so flawlessly.
Even with that little mouth pop. I love it.
Yupp!..After i watched this made me dont believe NASA more🤷🏼♂️
I feel exactly the same. Just give him a pirate costume and he's easily on par with Barbossa from the first one, but the exquisite cgi from the vfx team just puts the character on another level
I'm so glad they showed Nighy doing the "....price? puip" without CGI, Iol. Wonderful performance.
6:37 for anyone wondering ! Work a watch aha. What a talented guy
Same, I was wondering if that was improvised by the actor of he VFX team. It's incredible what a hold on the character Bill had
Loved Bill Nighy. He's a great actor and was awesome as Davy Jones. Because of the character, the portrayal, and the story, Davy Jones is one of my favorite top ten villains of all time.
No kidding!
Davy’s anger issues are always part of the performance and it’s how Bill really pulls it off. Awesome!
Agreed!!!
Bill Nighy really INHABITED that Character-made him Alive.
Coffee stain ? Are you serious? That’s actually hilarious. Didn’t expect that.
A great artist can use anything for inspiration :D
Happy little accidents
2006 this came out... 2006... Which meant they were making this in 2005, on Windows XP. Anyone who's ever used a computer from then will know just how slow and painful they could be, the fact they produced incredible life like CG that still holds up to this day, honestly amazing, it made this movie. Think how bad this movie would have been if Davy Jones didn't look real, the whole thing would feel like a joke. So damn impressive!
And how bad CGI looks now a days with incredibly better technology compared to 05
Unix 7:16
@@neggD I think what you're seeing there may be a full screen application, because at 3:23 you see a guy clearly using Windows XP and then only moments later is using the same system as the guy at 7:16
Could be wrong though, Unix would make more sense computationally. Regardless though the hardware they had was far from powerful by modern standards, so it's still very impressive that what they produced holds up and is often better in some cases than CGI that's made today
@@ajburdett882 Yes. I would assume that at that time Photoshop had no Unix version, only Windows. In the absence of PBR, textures weren't painted directly on geometry then as it is done today. It was done on flat 2D and by hand. But the 3D part at 8:46 is Maya, probably running on Unix based off the look of the shelf tabs. ILM runs on mostly on proprietary software that can be customized according to need via code developed in house.
Appreciate the fact that you'd still reply after a year though. Thank you.
It was genius move of him to portray Jones as an evil monster but as a human that TURNED into a monster. Big difference, makes for a much better villain. Because monster that once was human and thusly behaves mostly human is much more relatable and even scarier.
They wrote him that way first though...
I love his accent so much ❤️
Du ye fear death..thah? Haha it is one of a kind
Scottish accent babe
@@wesholkan6030 I love it
A lost birda a lost birda that never learnt to flyah
A Dutch Scottish accent with a littel bit of German thrown aroundd
Not only is Davy Jones an amazing design, but his whole crew is so detailed. Every crew member, even background members, are so well designed.
It is absolutely mind-blowing how they were capable of making a movie that realistic and visuals and graphics looking that mesmerising and impeccable with the equipment they had....this movie was made more than 16 years ago...incredible
Dude. Special effects have gone nowher but down hill since the 90s.
We had brilliant cgi already thanks to ILM but most movies nowadays prefer to do their effects "in house" amd the results are SHITTY 90% of the time.
Don't sleep on iLM they are wjatade Special efcects and cgi what it is in the 80s and 90s
Was made*
@@KneeCapHill That's one of the worst takes on CGI in movies I've ever read.
No one does their effects "in house". What is it supposed to mean anyway?
Most studios outsource their work. Marvel Studios for example doesn't have an own CGI/VFX department.
Most films today are extremely large on scale, so multiple VFX studios work on them all over the world.
Another important aspect is time. Most films, especially marvel movies have to be rushed in production. Add in a lot of reshoots and they sometimes have to work on stuff that takes a few months or a year in few weeks.
Another important thing is experience in working with VFX studios by the director himself. Most modern directors have no experience with VFX and animation. They film poor footage on a green screen with little care and hand it over to the VFX teams like:" Here, make it look good!"
Films with great VFX like this one and Avatar are great because the VFX teams are involved in the shooting and scene setup as well, helping to understand the environment and factors that make the scene come to live. This is extremely important and saves the artists a ton of time and effort while greatly increasing the quality of their work.
That was a small fraction of things that matter.
How am i supposed to know that? Because i work in the industry.
The fact that this movie's visual effects were made in windows xp on crt displays and it still looks incredible on modern tv's or projectors blowns my mind, ILM are fucking legends!
Can you imagine the surprise when all the pirates saw themselves for the first time as CGI fish creatures? I bet there was a lot of "WHOOOOAAAHHHH!!!!!" and applause in the showing.
It’s endlessly entertaining to watch his quirks and mimics sans-CGI, but I think he knew he’d be covered in heavy amounts of CGI and dialed his eccentricity to 11. If it were a human character, this performance would be a bit too much.
Spot-on. It's a skill-set of its own to act through heavy costuming (or CGI) that much closer shared with theatrics, or even kabuki.
Not many talk about how incredibly good bill was. His voice and mannerisms and the way he speaks "jack sparrah" ," one hundred souls-ah"
Totally underated as actor ! Brilliant
Legendary performance. Still one of most underated villians ever. Bill Nighy brought that character to life
CGI gives Davy Jones physical appearance, but Bill Nighy's performance fills him with life and personality.
Bill Nighy has to be the best actor for playing villains. He can just create so many and they're never the same.
The smoking scene and the closeup of Davy Jones was just VFX artist flexing.....
For those that spend hrs and days upon the making of this film ,I thank you and Applause"
Probably still the best CGI character i have ever seen, somehow is even more real looking than Thanos.
I love how we can all agree that he is the BEST cgi character of all time
Dang, it's been more than 15 years since Dead Man's Chest came out! Here's to this masterpiece!
Whatever every one of these members were paid for this level of work, they deserve twice as more! Amazing work.
They do deserve. But who's gonna pay as much as twice? If you wanna give your Account number then it would be very nice of you!
I‘d totally pay to see the pirates films without cgi, just for fun 😂❤️
😂😂
Yeah me too
The comedic aspect of Davy Jones helps alot. had he just been this evil dude with no fun side it would have first of all been hard to take serious as he's got a octopus for face.
But fun villains are also just fun.
I mean you also gotta imagen what Davy Jones would be as a character, his face and hes crew have become a bunch of fish, all so he can try an simp for the ocean itself
Of Course a man like that would be cracking a joke now and then just to keep on the remaining parts of his fleading sanity. And the playing on piano scene was pretty amazing.
Like
The BEST antagonist. 😈☠️⚔🦜🦑
Don’t forget he has anger issues.
Bill Nighy the science guy
I think you mean science gighy
The science guy-ah
I laughed so hard when he made that plopping sound. Great actor.
fucking masterpiece man i love everything about this god damn
Bill Nighy NAILED it! Classic acting skills, great body language and I love his accent!
And his LAUGH - ha ha!
It's almost more impressive to me, the fact this entire scary crew were all just dudes in grey sweat suits and beanies, that's amazing acting lol
Pretty intimidating even without the effects.
Those little quirks and ticks he had during the film added SO much to the character and made you realize he was still human in there somewhere and not to just a soulless monster
6:26 fucking love this guy he’s incredible he made my heart jump a million times throughout this whole movie I just think he’s the coolest
BILL NIGHY!!! such an amazing actor!
Bill playing the organ is cinema magic
Gore Verbinski is an amazing director
DAMN YOU JACK SPARROW!!!!
Davy, you need to quit having so much drama, man! It’s about time Will Turner had you in the custody of Lord Beckett.
@@ericscott4035 He can't help being an edgelord
They wanted us to look at his character in amazement of how well he looked and that’s exactly what we did.
1:41 that‘s a bit of an ironic edit
LYAH
I just finished watching the trilogy and the effect still holds to this day. Davy Jones is one of the few movie villains that truly scared me.
What about the last two?
Still, SIXTEEN YEARS LATER, the best CG character EVER put to screen. They really outdid themselves with my boy Davy.
"interesting translucency on the circumcised unit here... does it make him a little too fragile calamari?" as a video editor, I can totally understand this kind of description with constructive criticism lol
Good catch, I didn't even think too much about the weirdness of that line.
(For those wondering, it's at 11:21)
Just finished watching and still got my mind blown in 2021
mine as well
Davy Jones is one of the most impressive feats out there, but remember…those CG’ers then had to turn around and do that with the rest of Jones’ crew. Sure, Jones was the hardest to CG, but no one else was purely animated; they were all in mo-cap suits.
Will’s father clearly has full make-up on him
And couple of others too
I remember watching this video on the Dead Man's Chest DVD back in 2007 and honestly the POTC behind-the-scenes inspired me to get into filmmaking. Thank you for posting this.
It was the eyes that got me and I was like "wait is that?.." lol thanks Underworld
Ha, for me it was the voice and the general face shape that they tried to keep even with all the tentacles.
@@yevgeniyermakov5582 yup, you can totally see and hear it
This animation aged amazingly good. And the most impressive thing is that they made this artwork with these old pcs.
Davy Jones was perfect, both the CG and performance working together
Bill Nighy is unbelievably talented actor!
His mannerisms really made the character super unique. His performance and his character and everyone who worked on it really took the series to it's peak.
All these years and I never knew it was he who played that character. What a superb performance by Mr. Nighy.
Those 3 movies will go down in the history as one of the best movies ever made...Gore is a genius
His little quirks are what made the character so iconic. That along with the brilliant cgi.
Still looks fantastic after 15 years
This movies were masterpieces
The CGI mixed with bills voice and acting is absolute top notch
6:38 I re-watched that bit about 50 times.
That stickiness with the tentacles was brilliant.
Bill nighy is amazing. I love all the little mannerisms he put into jones…as well as many of his other performances like slartibartfast. I wish I could write a perfect movie for him.
Utterly brilliant and Bill was magnificent 👌
i love these movies, they where made during a time when a big budget movie looked big budget
This might be a Hot Take but I think Davy Jones looks more real than Thanos
Same.
Yeah, he does
Tbh CGI in those two last Avengers movies was pretty mid
Bill Nighy is a genius
I absolutely love how Bill player Davy Jones, the body movements, the little subtle quirks etc. Amazing!
best one

The best acting skills I've ever seen 💯
I loved and I still love nowadays Captain Davy Jones, his character is so particular, so crazy and so funny at the same time and full of amazing facial expressions.. I love him so much.. I watch The Pirates Of The Caribbean just for Captain Davy Jones ❤️
EVERYONE who worked on this....Thank you so much! You guys created an amazing character which is timeless. The first three POTC movies will always remain a classic.
2:53 I loved this detail lmfao genius 👌
“The Dutchman must have a CG team..”
"Damn you Jack Sparrah!"
I have so much respect for the team that worked on this movie. They did a phenomenal job. 👏🏻
The CG looking this good in 2006 blows my mind
If you're trying to find out if the "Price?" *blurp* bit comes from the actor himself, go to 6:40
I'm trying to focus on how amazing the technology and animation is. But I keep getting distracted by childhood nostalgia at the sight of those old 2000s computers!
Jack Sparrow was the gem of Pirates 1. Pirates 2 had to follow that up, and they managed to not only deliver a spectacular visual with Davy Jones and his crew, but have Bill Nighy perform in such a unique manner, making it feel like a fully fledged character already in the first scene.
On top of that, Pirates 2 and 3 were sort of one big story, so they didn't even have to "follow up with something even bigger" for pirates 3, as that was kind of a package deal.
The only thing that kind of surpassed this was Endgame, following up Infinity War, but that was built up over a decade. This was so big for its time, and the CGI still holds up spectacularily almost 20 years later! Davy Jones is one of the greatest villain characters ever!
Still a million times better than modern CGI
IMO: Davey Jones is the best CGI character to date. The effects used on him is mind blowing 🤯
The Potc movies mean so much to me and the work of every single person involved in these movies is outstanding.
What John Knoll says at 6:35 is the icing on the cake. The bold choices by the creatives make not only the character better. But make the film better. It’s all translates from his performance to the CGI. You see it all.
im fckng gonna watch it again
Absolutely Amazing the work of Bill!
Brilliant acting and effects and writing. Great movies!
Oooohhh. Now I remember, Idustrial Lights and Magic did the CGI on the very first Jurassic Park movie. No wonder. Hands down geniuses. Also I just remembered, Bill Nighy and Johnny Depp worked together again on Rango.
ILM also did all SW movies, a lot of Star Trek movies, and plenty others
It was George Lucas’ special effects company before he sold it to Disney
That’s some amazing acting right there!!
still better than present day cgı s great work
Whooooa! Thanks for this video!
Amazing work from CG team to Bill. Really created the worlds best cg character. Everyone I watched the movies with always said Davy Jones was so cool every time he showed up.
This is so awesome to see.
I can understand liking Davy Jones' CGI more than Thanos, but to go and say that the Thanos CGI is NOT good is just you in denial. If a movie is in capable hands, the CGI will look amazing, like Pirates of the Caribbean, which came out early to mid 2000's and has some of the best CGI you'll see in a movie.
Thanos looks like a plastic figure
Thanos is good but in both movies there are a few moments where the CGI is very choppy. Davy Jones is just on an entirely different level given the countless layers of texture they gave him
Thanks has some top-tier texturing, and negligible errors.
But ILM snapped on this one, they aren't even in the same league IMO.
Yep. Artistry cannot truly be swapped out purely by technology - sure, they interact and aid each-other, but you only get perfection when both sides of it are working their absolute best. Terminator 2 for example, has CGI that looked ahead of its time for 1991, and even today is still good enough to not take you out of immersion.
I think that what's bad about Thanos is his character design, not the CGI. Big muscly purple guy with a weird stripey chin isn't a very captivating sight, unlike Davy Jones.
The technicality of Thanos' CGI? Sure, it's perfectly fine. But the design of his character? It's not appealing at all, not striking and not enticing. Especially in contrast to what Davy Jones looks like.
By far my favorite movie villain and possibly one of the best performances ever delivered by an actor
You have to admit this is astonishing work for such a amazing character
2 and 3 are the best of the saga
wow, forgot it was so back in the days they were still using CRT monitors!
maybe that's why the magic has left modern CGI. it's the fact they're using flat screens and not CRT's!
PoTC1: MJ's Thriller-like CG
PoTC2/3: fucking masterpiece of CG.
9:08 best part
Just amazing!!!!!!
Best CG ever
