- In Dead Man's Chest, Liar's Dice is the game played by the crew of the Flying Dutchman. Played by the lost souls serving on Davy Jones' crew, it is a game of deception and that the bet includes all the dice, not just one's own. While on the Dutchman, Will Turner learns how the game is played before challenging Davy Jones at a game of Liar's Dice, the purpose of which was to find out where Jones hides the key to the Dead Man's Chest.

Got to admit he's damn right
Yeah
totally true!
Damn, my favorite line
Agreed.
In a sense it could still be "fate". I mean if you buy the idea of determinism and remove the supernatural or mysticism aspects of it then yeah...
The fact that they cut this scene but spent fifteen minutes with Jack Sparrow getting chased by cannibals for no reason is a travesty.
Yeah, the whole cannibal island sequence was not even needed.
This cut scene yet keeping in the stupid swingingcircle cage scene on the island mountains is my villain origin story
Pretty sure it's because Will's call of "Five Sixes" was a complete shot in the dark. That one call completely ruined the entire scene.

"I choose my own fate"
"Then it wouldn't be fate would it?"
The way he says that line so flippantly is almost as if he's heard people say that to him hundreds of times
He’s probably seen his share of brave fools like Will rushing into it.
He’s far too cynical to indulge them.
Its when he says "What could be the cause...It can only be a woman." His little brow twitch. Id wager he's reflecting his time with Calypso.
@@donovanbeaulne5619 he is.
Upon rewatch I actually found him to believe it for a moment when Will won the game. Then almost lost his mind when he asked again.
He likely has.
"You can't best the devil twice, son."
"Then why are you walking away?"
Daaaaaamn that's a good line
Nobody calls him out on his ship.
*NOBODY.*
It puts Jones on the spot, but frankly, the reasoning behind Jones’s walking away is pretty straightforward when you think about it.
Jones wasn’t walking away because he was worried about Will, but because he had no further reason to stick around. The whole reason he had been called down was for a game, and once it finished, he had no reason to be there anymore, hence why he left to go back.
His line of “You can’t best the devil twice, son” didn’t exactly help his position either, as it gave Will the opportunity to capitalize on the insinuation that Jones left because he was a sore loser. Hence, when Will questions Jones’s ego, Jones locks in and doesn’t back down to another game.
If it was me in Jones’s situation, I’d have probably said something like “Consider it a kindness, me leaving you, giving you a chance to rid yourself of your cockiness… boy.”
Yes his crew would remember him being a coward to a mere mortal.
That was a really solid line for William.
"Ye can't best the devil twice, son."
"Then why are you walking away?"
lugialover09 Probably an even better line would be: But you are not the devil jones. Remember, the only reason you have a crew is because they fear him more then they do you.
But at the end jones was right he one the second round
Julius Zwartkruis, that’d have been awesome!
The reason he's walking away cause he was bested, and the deal was done. Why stay around, so as he turns and leaves, Will challange him for a second time. He wasn't walking away from anything then Will did that.
@@captainflowers748 that doesn't matter, he showed no interest in another game so he had to hurt his ego
Davy almost sounds gentle when he says "Ye can't best the devil twice, son".
He does. He's actually trying to talk Will out of challenging him a second time. Or at least it sounds that way.
Yeah
Yeah, it almost sounded like mercy. From a broken hearted man, to a heart soon to be broken.
He’s speaking from experience, he cheated death and thus the devil, by becoming captain of the Dutchman, it was a warning from a man who had been broken by his experiences, it’s actually a recurring theme, like Barbosa and the crew of the black pearl, the Dutchman’s crew is cursed, I would imagine after so long, a part of Jones just wants to rest,
@@caileanm2009
Yeah, it could be that. But it could also be him just sparing his pride, and preserving his influence over the crew. I mean, he already lost one of them to a noob aboard the ship. A second challenge, and the rest of the crew could end up bargaining with him for their freedom. And Jones could've been losing deckhand after deckhand.
The way Davy rolls his eyes around when he said, "Then it wouldn't be fate, would it?" is both hilarious and taunting. Also this entire scene really helped to flesh out Davy's personality and what he's really like. Evil yes but not just evil for the sake of evil. He's got manners and charm. Friendly when he wants to be but extremely dangerous when not taken seriously.
He's extremely bitter turned narcissistic.
@@Black.Sabbath except Jones wasn't full of himself, he just want everyone else to feel his pain
@@Black.Sabbath Bitter & cheated is more accurate than "evil"... what he signed up for is not what he got.
It especially says something when, despite being evil, he chooses to warn Will to not attempt another game.
@@3DSDF Wish they kept it in, because as far as I'm thinking that's got to be the one time Jones showed "mercy". Telling him to quit while he's ahead and stop poking the bear.
I don't understand the decision to cut down this scene, I really don't. It's only 4 extra minutes, but it adds SOOOO much to the movie. The writing is fucking flawless. Seriously stupid move by the people in charge.
I agree. I sat down and re-watched Dead Man's Chest a week ago, and then stumbled upon this scene for the first time.
Cutting this was ridiculous.
Pretty sure it’s due to the fact that Will already got what he wanted after winning the first game. So him getting the key didn’t really matter
@@sea-bassisabottlecapco3767 doesn't he still need the key to trade for jacks compass to earn his and elizabeths freedom?
From a writer’s/narrative perspective, it makes sense. The assumption is that the majority of the audience hasn’t played the game and don’t know the rules, which is true. So watching the first game would be rather confusing, but the movie trods along anyways, expecting you to have understood the stakes. You understood the outcome based off dialogue, but that’s all that’s understood.
And then you’re putting the audience through a second round of a game they don’t understand and expect them to either have already understood or hope they will the second time. That’s fundamentally frustrating. It’d definitely had lead to unanimous “It was a dumb scene” remarks, and you don’t want that as a movie maker.
[EDIT] that feeling is avoided now because we can just look up the game’s meaning after the fact. But it’s not avoided during first viewing unless you already know the game. So, cutting back on the potential confusion was the move to make.
i watched the film a few days ago and the overall pace of the film this scene slows it down drastically even tho its a great scene. i remember on the Prometheus directors commentary they explained why some great scenes are pulled from films for this reason.
This movie over a decade old yet the cgi is still incredible

Never let it be said that Davy Jones isn’t a gracious loser
joshuamlee98 he’s won many fights losing one game isn’t gonna kill him.
Yeah, he took that in strides.
He may ne considered evil by human standards but he is fair. You win fair and honestly and he will respect that. Cheat or be dishonorable you get the claw or tentacles lol

People who cheat death are the true losers of the game of life itself.
And let it be known he gives you a fair chance to step down rather than to throw your very soul and being away. He may seem cruel, but in a way he is fairly just for a being of the sea
I think my favorite part is when Davy Jones says "well done, Master Turner", and knocks the ashes from his pipe like a polite golf-clap. As theatrical as Jones is, it's fascinating to see him lose so gracefully. He doesn't even try to cheat or go back on his wager. It really shows how confident Davy Jones is about his position as the ferryman of the dead- sure, he lost one of his crew, but someone will fill in the gap eventually. As both Turners have shown him, there are plenty of desperate men out there.
Davy Jones is an antagonist but he isn't a Villain... he's just doing his job albeitly with bad grace from being lied into taking it

I love the subtle details of this scene.
1. Davy Jones using black dice.
2. That little snort Davy Jones does when talking about women.
3. How Davy Jones stutters on the word "married."
4. It's been mentioned, but Davy Jones stating Will's fate is to be married to the ship is excellent foreshadowing.
5. Davy Jones knocking his pipe on his claw to simulate clapping.
6. How Will's father's expression changes from happiness to worry upon Will asking for another game.
7. How Davy Jones sounds human, almost afraid, when saying, "How do you know of the key?"
Yeah, about the change of his voice…I think that was Davy’s real voice, the same thing happened again when he visited Calypso in the Black Pearl the next movie.
He probably created this “villainy voice” that he uses most of the time in order to appear more scary and dissociate himself from his human past and the painful memories that it evokes
However, when startled or made to remember his old life..his original human voice comes out
And those are some cool black dices man

Where in our body do we find a soul?
@@Zergul_Zai It’s not a physical thing. You can’t open a person up and point to a “soul/consciousness” part, not in the brain either. Some say it’s a collective effort of the whole body, but I think that’s still not taking into account non-physical factors. There’s so much going on in the Universe at all times, and we often mistake material reality for the only thing that is. I believe that the soul is this immaterial thing that influences the body and pushes it to live; collapse neural functions in the brain, pump blood and oxygen, etc. It is the very essence of life. Emotions, will, identity, all are mere parts of it. That’s not even touching on it’s connection to other souls. Maybe each soul makes up one ginormous consciousness. The collective consciousness. I don’t know for sure, I can only see the influences of the soul, not the soul itself. But faith is the assurance of things unseen and I don’t believe the soul is of physical material.
@@Zergul_Zai ❤❤❤❤😰❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Davy Jones takes losing the first game surprisingly well, considering he just lost ownership of a member of his crew. I wish they had kept this scene in. It makes it all the more tragic that Will's father wins his freedom only to lose it again moments later to keep Will from losing the game.
Well Jones probably would've denied Bill's freedom though also Will is such an idot because he got too cocky and Davy beat him in the rematch so it's kinda Will's own fault his father was spousally free just to lose his freedom again a minute later (tough luck 😢)
Jones allows his crew to actively play the game and use time in service as the wager, a few well placed bets and he could be freeing crew members by the clawfull. But you have to remember he actively replenishes his crew by offering dying sailors a longer life in service on the Dutchman.
The game is binding and Davy Jones respects that.
The second game wasn't just to win the key though. It was to find out where it was. Will wasn't cocky, he just had plans beyond what Jones understood.
Steffen Jensen Why didn’t Will just withdraw from the game right before they started after Davy revealed the key’s location?
@@mechadoggy Good question, I never thought about that. Withdrawing at that moment would have been suspicious though and he had the chance of winning again...

Ah yes and the plot hole of him saving his father and not needing the key.
@@touchingisjustthefirststep
Not a plot hole. Will was there to get the key to save Elizabeth. It is later when he decides to kill Jones to save his father.
@@juanlaise1059 When in turn with this scene, Will had betted and won his father's freedom bloodless. It was a fair game. Jones respected that. @@michelveilleux1275 nah too complicated. We are here to enjoy great acting, music, scenery. Not to follow step-by-step storyline

Say what you will about Davy Jones. He was fully ready to let Bootstrap go
Yeah, he took that lose in strides. Such a gracious loser.
Losing bootstrap isn't a big loss to jones tbh since he ferries dead into the afterlife and if they don't want to go then they join his crew so...
In whatever twisted way he would've done so. Like he said to Will to feel free to go ashore next time they make port. He would've made your life very hard for as long as he could.
Would've been interesting, would've Bootstrap been free but stayed covered in seafloor fauna?
Free one Turner and keep the other
This scene is so much more important than it seems, and needed to be left in. In the final cut, his father putting up his eternity of servitude doesn't have much of an impact because he's already stuck there. It's kinda like if you're already burning alive, there's not much more damage more fuel can do to you. But this scene re-contextualizes the moment. William has just won his father's freedom, and you can see the joy on his face to be free. But the moment Will puts himself in the path of the gun, Bill doesn't hesitate to throw that freedom away for his son. His sacrifice means so much more with the added context of him getting his freedom back moments before. Without this scene, the moment is good, but not nearly as great as it could have been
But then, if will got his father free, then why does he need the key. There’s kinda an exploit there
@@robertolebron2296 I mean, fair point, but there are still two other motivations. Getting the key for Jack, and getting it for the East India Trading Company dude to get Elizabeths freedom as well
@@MadMagicianGaming A bit late to the party here, but his father joining the game even without this knowledge makes a lot of sense when you realize what it does to the whole dynamic of the game. He safes Will by his choice of position on the table ("attacking" Jones) and intentionally losing at the end with an impossible bet - since only one person loses by being called out a liar, Will can walk and later leave the ship. Had Bill not done that Will's knowledge of the keys whereabouts would have been useless since he would not have been able to leave the ship.

Its not underrated, it got its dues. It is fucking incredible though.
Apparently, they debated about the color and texture for a great length of time, until someone looked in the bottom of a coffee cup and found a stain that looked exactly like what they were looking for
I recall a news site accidentally called it prosthetics and makeup.
The CGI on Jones was done based on Bill Nighly's motion capture. That means that they used his real facial performance as a reference to how should it work, or it would be way less perfect to what we saw.
It's a shame they cut this scene. The writing, acting, music, and special effects are all working together so well. I especially love the details in Davy Jones's CGI: the dice sticking to his suckers, the little puff of smoke out the side of his face, each tentacle moving naturally and independently. I feel sorry for the animators who spent so many hours on that only to have it left out of the film.

*Rules*
1: Each player has 5 dice
2: Each round begins by the players shaking their dice inside opaque cups and putting them head down on the table
3: Each player look at their dice without showing them to the rest (you can do this at any point in the game)
4: The first player has to try and guess how many dices of a certain type are in total *including the dice from the other players*
5: The next player has to either augment the "amount" of dice from the previous bid, or augment the "number of" the dice bidded on.
-For example if the first player calls for Three 4´s. The next player can say either *Four 4´s* or *Three 5´s*
-You don´t have to necessarily augment the values by only one. You could very well call for Seven 4´s on your turn and that´s fine.
6: If at any point the next player doubts there are as many dice of the amount called from the previous player he can call the previous player a Liar.
7: Once someone has been called a Liar all cups go up and you count the dice to see if they match OR EXCEED the bid from the player who was called a Liar.
-If the dice on the table match or exceed that last bid the player who called Liar loses
-If there arent enough dice to match the bid then the player who made the last bid loses.
8: Next round. Player who won begins this time
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Optional Rules: (because there weren´t enough already)
1: 1´s are wild meaning they count for any value to all players.
2: You can half the amount of dice bidded on by turning them into 1´s
-Meaning if the last player called for *Nine 6´s* you can then call for *Five 1´s* (halving the amount)
-The next player if he wants to turn the 1´s into any other number has to double them. (So from Five 1´s you´d have to go to *Ten 2´s* for example)
3: Each time a player loses a round the lose a dice
4: You can sometimes call for an open hand round. Meaning each player shows their dice to the rest but can´t see their own
That one wil fuck you up
5: You can "Call" the last players bid. So basically you can agree to whatever the last player before you said and if he was right you win. If he was wrong you lose.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They need to do a whole trilogy with Davey Jones front and center like good Lord this is one of the best villains ever crafted.
This is what the franchise deserves most and plenty of pirate leads for him to kill !
I like how it's so completely animated that you can tell it was a last minute decision to delete it
Such a shame. They should've cut the cannibal island if they wanted to trim runtime. This scene is a narrative masterpiece and gives much needed context to the actions during the second game for the key vs Will's soul.
I actually PREFER this...we kinda get a deeper look into Jones...he’ll make a bet, and even if it’s one he thinks you can’t beat, if you do...he’ll honor it
Lawbreakers and brigands they might have been, but among pirates you didn't EVER dishonor the terms of a wager. To them, that was more than disrespect it was downright sacrilege
@@darchangel2136 As they say, ‘keep to the code’ both in piracy and in games it would seem.
@@robbieking4070 There's another old saying though... "There is honor among thieves." 😉
I mean he gets a man for eternity instead of a free man instead of obtaining the key. The chest is what gives the key value. both were hidden from practically everyone. at that moment he at least wanted to learn the keys location since it would be tougher to find. would've been ideal if he won it but still very important information if he knew where it was hiding.
“Ye can’t best the devil twice”
Jack Sparrow: 🤣
Damn you, Jack Sparrow!
I love the "that which is dearest to a man's heart" showing the parchment with the key to the chest containing his very heart.

Davy Jones: "chuoa"

Lmaoo
He literally made an octopus noise😂
He had to hock a loogie.
Probably improvised .. which is awsome
Why did they take that out? Not just that it's a great scene, but it also explains why bill bids in to begin with
I thought that for a moment, but the bet is a soul, whether Bill was serving a hundred years or less there was an end date at some point, he was within his rights to still bet his own soul, so it made sense either way
It was there when I watched the movie
The Thinking Being no it wasn’t lol. That’s why it’s called a cut. They cut it from the movie. You saw the last part of this scene, but the beginning was removed from the film.
@@muzzleflash7056 no hes right some countries both theatrical and DVD released with this scene in that's why the cgi looks good because it was intended for a global release with only some countries getting the scene normally
I’m gonna go out on a limb and say the smoking might have been too much for Disney to keep in for the theater release
What I find very interesting about the scene is right before the second game starts, Jones is actually frightened at the fact that Will knows about the key, and even more interesting you can see the very moment he realizes he can't back down without looking like a coward. He was as stiff as a board as he was sitting down, saying nothing.
I think this scene adds a lot and it's a shame it was cut. If they wanted to cut runtime, they should've shortened the cannibal island gauntlet by a few minutes. This scene is narratively incredible.
First, Will offering a smaller wager (though still a big one) first is a great way of ramping up the stakes and tension. Then during the first game, Jones and Will both get amazing character moments; we see just how bitter Jones is, but he's not evil for the sake of it. He is snarky and his words ooze cunning, but he's not bad-mannered in conversation. Will on the other hand is shown as hopeful and unwavering in the face of a man (squid?) who has given in to despair. The again, Bootstrap Bill joining in on the second game only serves to make his sacrifice worth more. He had JUST got his freedom through Will's cunning and luck, yet when Will is prepared to throw himself in the fire, Bill doesn't even hesitate to jump in and damn himself once again to save his son. An already impactful moment turned downright tragically heroic by the added context. Finally, winning the first bet showed us that Jones will honor a wager, even if it hurts him. He clearly doesn't like letting go of Bootstrap, but was perfectly willing to. This ups the stakes for the second game, where we now know he won't simply back down from a wager, so the bet on the key is even more tense because we know he won't just say "Nah fam I'm good" if Will wins.
Tho Jones is a bit of a "monster" he is a very honorable man, he never cheats out the people he makes bets with. And he honors the bet. Even when will said to play another game jones gave warning that he couldn't win again instead of just immediately jumping into it.
More like a code of conduct.
“You’re a desperate man...what is the cause, haha...it can only be a Woman.”

Fantastic acting by Bill Nighy on playing Davy Jones
This scene is fantastic. Movies nowadays don't seem to be capable of this anymore.
Oh. my. God. I am just astounded. This movie came out in 200-bloody-6 and the cg for jones still looks incredible. He looks so real! It actually looks like they transformed bill nighy into an octopus crab man for this movie!

It CGI done according to Bill Nighy's mocap perfomance.

Yep

Definitely, I was watching dead man's chest a couple days ago, it has aged surprisingly well. Something that can't be said about most blockbuster movies.
You guys clearly haven't seen ''War for the Planet of the Apes'' that movie has the best CGI in history. However, I have to agree with the fact that it's some good CGI on Davy there.
Anakin would love to join Jones crew. He calls all the newbies "Master"
You lost me. I hate to ruin a joke, but would you care to explain?
@@We_Are_Borg_478 Anakin Skywalker is a character from Star Wars who, in a nutshell, was upset that he was not granted the rank of 'Master' by his superiors

He actually just called Will master because theres already a Mister Turner and Master is what you call a young boy, or someones son if that someone is there.
It's got nothing to do with the ship or seniority on the crew, its just that his dad happens to be there
Love the eel just chilling in the guys stomach behind will lol
The actor who plays Davy Jones does a really good job. Just the way he changes his tone is phenomenal.
“I chose my own fate”
“Then it wouldn’t be fate”

This scene adds so much quality to the story. It even explains why Bootstrap joined in, which always confused me, whatever reasons people tried to explain it by. This, though, makes sense.
shame this was a deleted scene
I always thought bootstrap joined because he was trying to protect will
This scene hits way harder after learning Will just won his fathers freedom just soo his dad can lose his freedom again crazy
There needs to be a collector's edition of the movie with this scene added back in. It's excellent stuff.
3:20 “HuuwAGH!”
The 2000s was the last era where solid quality movies were just made regularly
Cause they took their time with it. Now everything's video game quality
This movie is still one of the most visually amazing even years later and I will always love the nautical designs they went with for Davy Jones and his crew.
I have no idea why they would cut this scene, It's incredibly in every way from the great acting to the amazing CGI (which was made in 2006 and still holds up great in 2022 which says a lot) and with great memorable quotes.
"The Die is Cast"- is quoting Caesar in a speech before battle.
"Alea Iacta Est" in Latin.

I wish they would’ve kept this scene. The foreshadowing in this scene would’ve made such a huge impact on the ending. The parallelism in the dialogue is unreal! Good writing at its finest.
I love William Turner! And this scene was awesome!
"A woman need not cause you to be desperate if you choose the right women"
Hoohooooohh....if only he (at that moment) knew who he was saying that to...
Of course… foreshadowing makes it become all the more bitter once you know the story.
"You can't best the devil twice, son!"
"Then why are you walking away?"
DAAAAAMN SON!!! XD
First time seeing this extended version of this scene, and wow. It was already my favorite scene from this movie and top 3 scenes from the trilogy, but this extended one is even better. Several top-notch lines from Will (Bloom is simply fantastic in these movies) and Davy Jones. It adds more to the scene after Will wins a game with such high stakes, and wants to play again, only to lose his prize that he won in the first game. It also strengthens the relationship between Bill and Will, as Bill takes the fall for Will losing the second game, after winning his freedom minutes before. Truly a shame they cut it down
Now that's in depth, this should have totally made it into the movie.
I can't help but stare at that Eel behind Will and the little shrimp on his right.
Out of all the deleted scenes that I’ve seen from various films, I wish that they would’ve kept this in
It shows that before Will even attempted to find out about the key he was willing to risk his freedom to save his father & it then makes Bill’s sacrifice to save Will from servitude aboard the Dutchman that much more meaningful & heart breaking
The softer spoken Jones makes him an even more interesting character
I love the line “ that which is dearest to a man’s heart” because he’s talking about the witch Calypso who took his heart
This scene actually fleshes out even more about what happens in the film I feel. How the game really goes in real time, a better reason that Will is emboldened to bet his soul, and reveals that while Jones can be cruel at times, he is by all means not as cutthroat as the tales show. He shows he is willing to honor the bargain and even gives Will a chance to step back before he made a terrible mistake. I hope they make an extended edition of this and put this scene back in
This is a damn good scene. I wish they'd kept it in the movie. The acting is excellent. Davy Jones is one of my favorite villains
I love the animated expressions on the two crewmates behind Will, Quittance and Oglivey. It's like their faces fall when Will whips out the drawing of the key and they look at him instead of Jones.
I love that moray eel that peeks out of the stomach of the left one. I´ve watched the movies so many times over the years but today I spotted this little fella for the first time.😆
I love how you can look at Davyvs crew over and over again and keep seeing new things each time. I really need to re-watch these movies again but I no longer have the DVDs... Or a DVD player...
This cut makes the entire exchange more fluent in terms of pacing, and builds both Davy Jones and Bills character, with Davy Jones revealing his distaste for love, as well as seeing how even though his son had just won him his freedom, he still threw it away to protect his son (and he had already been on the ship for years)
I wish this wasn’t cut down because, one there are soo many good quotes in this and two it’s just an amazing scene, no fighting just a game of liars dice to choose what happens to those who are involved.
One of my favorite movies of all times, and I never knew this extended version of the dice game existed. Wild
The fact that this was cut, an extra 3 minutes in the dice game wouldnt have hurt the film guys, more davy jones is always great
Davy Jones: My pole is 8 inches long
Will Turner: Mine is 9
Will’s dad: HOLD MY SQUID
A word of advice, mates. You can't best the Devil twice.
