No no no.. if privateering was still around at that time, that means that piracy was only beginning to spread. Historically, pirating has risen when privateering was no longer an option.

This movie is a crooked version of the gospel. Beckett is the good guy, who represents Jesus, but they paint him as the bad guy. He's trying to eradicate piracy, but the satanic pirate rebellion is trying to go against the law. So yes, hallelujah, the age of piracy ends, for the lord will be coming on a day when Disney least expects it, and they shall tremble in great terror

Cameron .Nottebaum Yes it does make sense. The crewmen last saw chest in hands of James. And if Jack would have had the heart then either would water weight stop heart beating or krakens stomach acid destroy it. So it wasn't in chest neither in Jack Sparrow's pocket or on the board of the Black Pearl. So only James could have it and what would previous commodore do with the heart that E.I.T.C desires? Obviously it makes sense if you are smart enough. In your face.

After all he was supposed to only bring the compass but instead retrieved what Beckett sought out to get from it. Plus he outsmarted the Jack Sparrow, Will, Elizabeth and Davy Jones and his entire crew. That’s worth way more than a privateers commission. Admiral is a more fitting and deserving reward.

Originally, when handling the sword again, in the script he was supossed to say "my arm is complete again" (that's what the director said in the DVD commentary) but the line was considered too cheesy and was apparently deleted from the text before shooting. Johnny Depp seems to have liked the line because he used it a few years later in Sweeny Todd.
By the way, the scene is good but i'm glad they deleted it. It makes the ending flow better. And the Flying Dutchman appearing out of nowhere at the exact moment doesn't make much sense unless the movie explains that Jones can feel where his heart is or something, wich it doesn't.

@@XxowendanxX I did. And I saw a bitter and heartbroken man who takes it out on the world as he never asked for his job.
He devoted himself to Calipso and accepted the job so he doesn't need to land for 10 years straight and could be on the sea, always near her. He did his first 10 year term properly and when he had his day off and wanted to spend it with her, then she wasn't anywhere to be found. Jones felt betrayed and went f*ck-all mode, started neglecting his job and taught the Brethren how to bind Calipso into human form so she could do nothing but wait for him on the shore for his next day off, but when Calipso saw how his job-neglection had turned his beard into tentacles, she was disgusted and turned him away. So Davy Jones was bound to sea and Calipso to land, both living in misery.
In the end, both of them wanted freedom, same as Jack, Will and Liz. East India Tc wanted to control everything and everybody else wanted anarchy. Pirates set Calipso free, Davy Jones was released from his agonising existence. Company's influence got destroyed. Jack, Liz and pirates were free once again. And Will didn't die, he didn't have to leave his life for ever but for 10 years at a time so he could see and be with Liz once in every 10 years. And although he didn't choose this way voluntarily, he chose this solution to be worth it, as he did his job and didn't turn into fishy-boy. His son made Will neglect his job for a minute to save him from drowning and we saw the immediate aftermath on Will's face.
PotC has had a low-point, but whenever something is happening to the trio and Barbossa, I always feel emotionally invested. That's why the 4th feels weird, it only has half of them, but it helped to push the plot into 5th (Pearl in the bottle and truce between Barbossa and Jack). PotC is the only franchise Disney hasn't bought in which manages to keep itself afloat...........it all depends now on how Disney handles this franchise moving forward. They may even be in need to create another chapter as a pallet-cleanser after the massive fck-up they call Star Wars.

In my opinion James Norrington should have been Davy Jones and not Will Turner. Then he would give his heart in the treasure chest and say as Will did to Elizabeth: "It's always been yours. (James looks at the treasure chest and then looks in both the eyes of Will Turner and Elizabeth:) "Will you take care of it for me?"
He died off too quickly in Pirates 3.

so the plot leading up to elizabeth's escape would be the same. from there it changes.
Norrington grabs the rope, uses his pistol to shoot it, and escapes with the crew, but drops his sword on the dutchman. The movie plays out like it does for a while, then gets to the climactic battle. Jones is about to kill Will, but Bootstrap stops him, and gets thrown against the rail. Jones goes for the kill, but James steps in between them, killed by his sword. Then instead of Will stabbing the heart, it's James, gets his heart cut out by Bootstrap, as a form of gratitude, and your ending.

It has been established in both films he's in that Jones is not omniscient over the seas; hell not even over his own purgatory. There is no way he knew where it was and arrived the literal second that Beckett finally gets it.

I never thought about the possibility that Norrington might have stabbed the heart, but NOW I AM.
And if he did, this scenario actually totally fixes the few issues I have with how AWE ended - particularly in regards to how Elizabeth’s arc wraps up.
Like, her whole character arc is about her abandoning the constraints of “proper society” and embracing freedom, but the trilogy ends with her husband stuck at sea forever, her father - the only thing tying her to land, lets be honest - dying off-screen, and she has LITERALLY BECOME THE PIRATE KING!!!!! THE ACTUAL EPITOME OF THE MOVIE’S CONCEPT OF FREEDOM!!!!!! only to just like... wallow on land as a single mother waiting for Will to show up once every ten years.
Like... no. That is not My Girl Elizabeth Swann.
But if MY BOY Norrington stabbed the heart, that would have been the PERFECT end to his arc: he is a good man who is constantly torn between doing the “right thing” as dictated by the formal laws of society and doing the right thing that he knows with protect and serve others. Like, his whole arc in the movies can be summed up at the end of Curse of the Black Pearl when Gov. Swann says to him “Perhaps on the rare occasion pursuing the right course demands an act of piracy, piracy itself can be the right course?” It’s the key moment in his arc, particularly in the first movie.
SO. Instead of getting his anti-climactic death on the Flying Dutchman (which is admittedly beautifully written - “Our destinies have been entwined, Elizabeth, but never joined”, like DAMN DUDE, RIP MY HEART OUT WHY DON’T YOU???) Norrington escapes with Elizabeth instead.
Already in this moment he’s choosing, again, to forfeit his standing in the eyes of the law to do what he thinks is the right thing to do, but it’s driven out of a love for Elizabeth here. That’s fine, but we can do better.
They all meet up at the Pirate Council, Liz becomes Pirate King, all that good stuff with Norrington tagging along to the fight in the maelstrom.
During the fight, you can have Norrington and Jack fighting to try to get Davy Jones’ heart, paralleling the fight at the end of Dead Man’s Chest, except this time they’re finally working TOGETHER instead of against one another - so Norrington is now properly allied with the pirates he was formerly hunting, and Jack is working with Mr. Law & Order. They’re foils of one another finally meeting in the middle, and we get to see more of Jack Davenport’s fight work that was sadly nonexistent in the third movie. It’s great.
And in the moment of truth, just before Davy Jones is about to stab Will, Jack notices, sees his friend about to get shish-kabob’d, sees Norrington fighting off the fish pirates with the heart, and Jack makes his decision.
Jack calls out, and manages to distract Jones for a brief moment. We think he’s got the heart, but then...
Jones is stabbed. And Norrington is holding the heart as Davy dies.
So Norrington goes through that whole “heart getting cut out” bit, and they take down Beckett in the same iconic way, except this time Norrington is captaining the Flying Dutchman.
And this wraps up everyone’s arc WAY better:
Elizabeth and Will can be together finally, doing whatever they please (including Liz continuing to be the Pirate King because LITERALLY WHY WOULD THEY DROP THAT I DON’T UNDERSTAND???? Let Liz be the free and independent woman you’ve been developing her into throughout this whole franchise, DAMMIT!!!!)
Jack has become the “good man” that Elizabeth knew he was, having worked with Norrington, everything that represents order and duty (again, from when Jack tries to manipulate Norrington in Curse of the Black Pearl: “How can you pass that up?” “By remembering that I serve others, Mr. Sparrow, not only myself.”) so that they can save the day, and having given up his own selfish opportunity to sail the seas for eternity as the new Davy Jones because he prioritized Will’s life over his own personal gain.
And Norrington completes his arc in forfeiting his place in society as a lawful force - and, going back to that Gov. Swann quote - literally becoming an immortal pirate captain because “an act of piracy” was the right course. He threw out the rules, and fully became a pirate in order to do the right thing and save Will, not just out of love for Elizabeth, but because protecting other people, even at the cost of his own life, is what Norrington DOES.
Damn, I just rewatched all of these movies because of the quarantine, and got really invested in this outcome, sorry folks.

Good stuff, only that Will's ties to the Dutchman were sowed from the first film and even Tia Dalma reinforces it in Dead Man's Chest. 'A touch of destiny,' Also, Will becoming the leader of the Dutchman shows growth in his character because he used to hate pirates. Besides, Elizabeth being Pirate King isn't dropped, they just don't include her in the 4th and 5th films so technically we don't know what she's up to. Furthermore, I think by not having her physically tied to Will gives her independence. As for Norrington, he did throw out the rules when he helped Elizabeth escape the Dutchman which was under the control of the EITC. Just my thoughts.

Sure, Beckett's evil, but working for him is probably pretty great. Never loses his temper at his men. Always polite, whatever the circumstances. Exceed in your job and you're richly rewarded. omg sometimes you almost think they deliberately delete the scenes that speak volumes about the movie and present a masterful culmination to the events that screams "World's End"! So much depth and tasteful allegories in this scene that explain the movie title. It's like the world of pirates, myths and magic has gone extinct (as in Barbossa's and Sparrow's conversation in the beached Kraken scene) and even the most intimidating legends are now tools of the very realistically authoritarian East Indian Trading Company, in a new age that has no room for noble heroes with values like Norrington's. No, both heroes and villains of legend succumb to one boring, oppressive monarchy :( so the world's end is both about the mythical and pirate world and the literal sense that now it has been mapped completely and rid of all mystery and freedom, a perfect end to the buildup of previous events. like, bruh, I just now got it...

I loved these films as a kid and I've recently rediscovered the first three. They're actually very thoughtful movies and deal with ideas like what you stated in your comment. They're almost a quiet attack on colonialism, the cynical nature of the modern world and its complete lack of magic and myth. I love this scene in particular because Beckett's statement about the "blank edges of the map filled in", as well as the title of the third film, is made very real by actually seeing the map finished. I think these films are much more thought-provoking than people give them credit for.

As soon as Norrington realized Beckett's intention to control Davy Jones, I wonder if he thought to himself right than & there What Have I Done?
Norrington wasn't a bad man, just blindly loyal to those in charge. It wasn't until he was reunited with Elizabeth in At World's End & found out about Beckett having had Elizabeth's father murdered that he finally realized what a massive & tragic mistake he made handing Jones' heart over to Beckett. Sucks they had to kill him off, would've liked to have seen him join Jack & the others in the final battle and than at the end maybe acquire his own ship & crew and reinvent himself as a successful Privateer.

It adds some exposition to the third film but it's unneeded because of the scene with Elizabeth's father. The climax with Barbossa returning is brilliant and one of the best surprise endings ever done on film.

  • @notmyfuggingtempo
    @notmyfuggingtempo Před 7 lety +30

Well it's cool to see the scene, but I understand why they have cut it out. It distracts from Jack's dramatic death and it is not really necessary because we get this information explained at the beginning of The World's End. Davy Jones last scene where he realizes that his heart has been stolen is a better climatic cut for his character arc in this movie. Also it's kind of dumb that the old guy says nothing better than "the map is finished" while a scary-ass ghostship rises in the bay right in front of him xD

    • @georgeofhamilton
      @georgeofhamilton Před 2 lety +4

I’ve changed my mind because this scene doesn’t make sense, and the tone of it doesn’t work that well.
Davy Jones doesn’t have some kind of tracking beacon in his heart that lets him show up within minutes to the heart’s location. That’s why after killing Jack, he was so surprised when he realized that his heart wasn’t in the chest-he didn’t know where it was. So why would he know that it was here in Port Royal? And the dramatic timing of his arrival feels pretty contrived.
And there’s no way Jones would be so jolly in subordinating himself to his new British superiors. His putting his hat over his chest all eagerly like that is out of his character.

A few things about this scene:
One, it elaborates on a plotpoint that is a little confusing when you start Worlds End. Beckett uses the heart for leverage to control Davy Jones.
Two, it elaborates on a second plotpoint that starts earlier in the film and is featured more prominently in Worlds End. The "map" being filled in, the idea that the world is losing its mystery and luster and becoming set-in-stone and realist. This is the trend Beckett warns Jack about at the start of this movie, and it's also the trend the pirates all band together to fight against in the next movie. The map being finished is the plans of the East India Company having come to conclusion. They've won.
Third, it kind of contradicts a lot of the characterization of Davy Jones throughout the movie. Davy Jones is this dreaded figure who is terrifying and imposing, but here he just kind of shows up out of the blue and begs. It's out of character in my opinion and I think it lends a lot to why this scene was cut.
Fourth, it kills the awesome cliffhanger in the shortened version of this scene. Norington dropping the heart on his desk and a cut to black is a lot better than 3 minutes of exposition that is going to be revealed in the next movie anyways.
