    Before rushing out to buy the Triple Thick Gloss by DecoArt, I have noticed it looks a bit yellowish after drying. Has anyone else had this problem?

      I've been searching for gloss finish to use instead of resin. I don't like working with resin. Nothing seems to come close to the smoothness of resin though. I saw a video where someone used Golden Polymer Gloss medium as a finish. But when I questioned Golden they said NO> And the container says don't use as a finish. Right now I'm using Min Wax Polycrylic Gloss. Any suggestions?

    • @getin3949
      @getin3949 Před 6 lety +3

      Hi Louise, I found the MinWax to be the best alternative and love the satin finish. I also have the Triple Thick Gloss and it makes the paintings too shiny. I like the Minwax much better and a can of it goes much further than the Triple Thick and is less expensive, around $7.50 per spray can and doesn't leave brush strokes.

    • @getin3949
      @getin3949 Před 6 lety +2

      I haven't had any problem with the Triple Thick Gloss yellowing but I don't like the glossy shine or the brush strokes. I've gone to the MinWax Polycrylic and love the satin finish much better and NO brush strokes.

    • @CarlMazur
      @CarlMazur  Před 6 lety +3

      I have not used any Golden Brand sealer coats or even paints. I am not the go to guy on that one. Just letting people know about the DecoARt. What's interesting... DecoArt just contacted me and they're sending me a new line of pouring paints they have developed. Haha!! We will see about that. I'm gonna test first instead of winging it like I did here. I was taking the advice of another viewer and that kinda backfired. Not bad... Nothing is ruined. I am just picky and my studio lights here are mighty bright like about 450 watts worth shining and I can tell a difference.

    Thank you Carl, I got a lot out of this. I had done a bunch of paintings on this theme a few years ago and they came out real good, though unlike yours (which is perhaps the point. Every painting is different.) Anyhow I went on to other stuff. Now I want to try drip again and this was a perfect start lesson. Thank you.

    Actually that accident you had with Dallas' painting gave me an idea that could turn it into a "happy accident". The indention you made actually looked kind of cool because of the raised and lowered areas and the way the light played upon it, although imagine if you had more control over that aspect.
    Of course you wouldn't want the paint to stick onto any surface you pressed into it, which is why whatever you pressed into the canvas might have to be treated (vaseline? silicone?...) but imagine some elaborate template that could be pressed into the paint in order to get that nice impression, maybe left there for a while, and then easily lifted right off. First off I was imagining those diagonal metal grills, but could you imagine a complex bas relief floral pattern, or even bas relief Wedgewood type figures pressed in. The trick would be to get a clean crisp impression, even all over and it would have to be done in primarily monochromatic areas where it could be read easily without the multicolor swirls competing.
    Also, now that I think about it, have you ever done a pour over some shape that has been masked with that masking that they use for watercolors - although that might be impossible because once you pull the masking up the poured paint that got on the masking would come up to - if there was only a way to get the masking off and have a perfectly clean line around the poured paint edge and the masked off area - which could be just blank canvas, or an actual oil or acrylic or watercolor painted scene, or a collage item like photos, newspaper, etc........Also, can this be done on metal, formica (imagine a kitchen counter top), tile- think about doing dozens and dozens of tiles, sealing the heck out of them with polyurethene and doing bathroom walls, or floors, kitchen backsplashes, mosaics, etc.....if it can be done on wood that has been primed, it would look cool on furniture - a chest of drawers ( each panel done separately and then reassembled, armoires, headboards of beds, imagine if you had wood floors in the living room and the entire living room floor was the trippiest pour ever, beautifully sealed and glossed - which makes me think, do you ever use tape to tape off designs with the pours - maybe another problem with how do you pull it up and get clean lines.....I wonder if this would work on ceramics, vases, decorative bowls, an old TV, a typewriter, books, fabric, curtains, unstretched canvas and then cut the canvas and reassemble..............picture frames!

    Hi. All! I’m a huge fan of your work and videos. Could you explain a bit about your “base coats”? For instance: should the base coat be gloss paint or f.st? Should the base coat be thicker or thinner? Should it be wet or dry when you pour the other colors? How much of each should I measure? Ratios? Thanx so much. I’m doing pours on Teflon sheet for polymer clay to place on baked clay bracelets etc.. but I tried Liquitex paint flow medium and it made no cells at all! So I figured without a “ floetrol” product, it won’t work. Thanx so much for sharing. 😉👍😍

    Hi Carl! I’m watching your pour for beginners video with the couple. Previously you said that the base coat paint, I.e. black, needs to be more dense than the mix paints. Are the opaque paints more dense than the metallics? And which paints are good for base paints and which type paints are less dense and good for mixing? Thanx you are the “master”!

    • @CarlMazur
      @CarlMazur  Před 6 lety

      Thanks so kindly Ruth. The opaque paints are usually more dense. It was just my experience to lay some thicker black paint down first. I don’t know if that’s a rule or not. Good base paints would be Golden, Liquitex and Artists Loft. The less dense or thinner paints you can find like Apple Barrel brand that are really thinned down. Golden has one of the highest pigmentations in their paints. So you don’t have to use a lot either. But it’s more expensive.
      All in all, you get what you pay for. If you use cheap thin down paints then they don’t last very long.

    Thank you for a great video! I am about to try acrylic pouring and your detailed explanation is exactly what I needed, I loved that you had friends who had never tried this technique. This is the only tutorial I've found that has gone from beginning to end step by step so I feel I can now have a go. The only thing I need to sort is suitable alternative ingredients here in the UK. Can I just check, you did say it is ok to use PVA glue? Do I use it as it comes or does it need to be thinned with water ? Have subscribed and will be catching up on your other tutorials xx

    • @CarlMazur
      @CarlMazur  Před 6 lety +1

      You are welcome Chris. I am SOOO glad you liked it because I work very hard on these videos to ensure the best tutorial possible. NOTE: For a final coat I wouldn't use the DecoArt stuff. It already looks yellow to me. Go with Liquitex Gloss Varnish and that's a sure thing and will stay clear for you.
      You can find PVA in craft stores which is regular school glue, but if you wanna pro piece than you better go with a Neutral pH Balance PVA which is polyvinyl alcohol and it won't yellow or fade on you. You'll know because it'll be more expensive. School glue is like $13 a gallon over here. High quality PVA is about $13 per 8oz.
      It'll need to be thinned. I notice the pro PVA is lots thicker than the school glue is. Use distilled water if you can.
      If you can't get Floetrol try searching for paint conditioners.

      Just some beginners tips:
      Don’t add too much silicone. More silicone less cells.
      Don’t over stir. More stir smaller cells. Should see silicone floating near top.
      Don’t over swipe. No back and forth motions. Then you’re just stirring the paint on the canvas and it will all blend together and not look good. 3 to 4 swipes at the most!
      Sometimes it’s good to pour your sides first and that way you don’t have to waste as much paint to drape it over the edge.
      Don’t be afraid to let a dirty pour settle in the cup before you pour it on the canvas.
      Don’t forget to use pushpins or something underneath your artwork so your paint does not stick to the bottom of your canvas.
      I use 100% silicone treadmill lubricant SpotOn brand and it works great every time.
      Don’t use a fan when drying.
      Make sure paint is a creamy consistency. Too thick will leave cracks.
      Don’t forget to experiment and have lots of fun. If you ruin a piece don’t give up. You can always paint over it. ☺️

    If you don’t have a torch, can you use a hairdryer on low?

    • @CarlMazur
      @CarlMazur  Před 6 lety

      No. A hair dryer is made for blowing things in the heat gun is used for slightly flashing the paint. A heat gun is not necessary though. You can still get a nice painting without a blow dryer, torch or a heat gun. I appreciate you watching Jill!

    Hi Carl, My silicone brand is Helix and it is so thick. I've watched you put your drops in and they look almost like water. Maybe mine is too thick and I should put MORE or LESS in the paint? The silicone was over $10.00 for a small bottle.

    • @CarlMazur
      @CarlMazur  Před 6 lety

      Hmm, I would do a small pour and find out. I would think less at first, but the thinner it is the easier it can move around the painting to create cells. I don't know a specific answer to that one.

    If I had Liquitex pouring medium instead of floetrol, would you still recommend me to add glue?

    • @CarlMazur
      @CarlMazur  Před 6 lety +1

      No. The pouring medium pretty much overtakes the glue in every way. The pouring medium is so hard to work with for me. It sets up so fast, it gets really sticky, not as many cells unless i do a swipe but then the swipe has to be fast because it's so sticky. BUT! On certain pours it does a really great job of bringing out real density and color to paintings. I was teaching a little 6 year old how to do fluid art and we used pouring medium and it turned out so gorgeous I could die.

    how much paint (combined) do you need for a dirty pour (how did you know it wasn't enough?)?

    • @CarlMazur
      @CarlMazur  Před 6 lety

      I was looking at the cup as opposed to the canvas size and I knew it wasn't. Sometimes I only see the top of the canvas and this canvas had big sides to it. Plus, you have to calculate waste.
      So usually almost a full cup of paint for an 8 x 8 canvas with gallery style. Once you tilt there's lots of waste, which is unfortunate.

    Thanks

    • @CarlMazur
      @CarlMazur  Před 6 lety

      You're welcome Jerry. The cost for one painting is kinda set by what it costs to buy a set of paints or tools, but the paint and tools can be used for multiple paintings. Usually it's about $70 to get all setup but you can seriously find tools like plastic palette knives and cheap brushes to start.
      The canvas was $10
      Paint was about $12
      Floetrol for gallon is $13
      Glue small bottle for $3
      Distilled water $2
      Brush is $3
      Silicone drops are $12
      Plastic palette knives $3.50
      Towels $5
      Craft sticks $2.50
      Cups $4
      Squirt bottles $7.50
      Push pins $2
      Gloss glaze $7

      @getin3949 Před 6 lety +2

    Can you use heat to fix the problem you had.

    • @CarlMazur
      @CarlMazur  Před 6 lety

      I wouldn't think so. Heat would make it dry faster and get even more sticky. Best thing to do I would recommend is to dab on more paint very carefully and removing any big bumps or lumps caused by the fall or accident. I was really surprised how flat the fixes dried, although they were visible at certain angles. It was kinda hard for me to fix it and run the camera at the same time so I did not do as good.

      I was using some house paints too but then my colors, mainly the white, started to fade so i stopped. I went back to using the titanium white. I notice house paints always get that slimy stuff at the top of the can and acrylics for art are different and they don't do that. Makes me wonder if that's not bad for the paintings
