  • Large canvas fluid painting pour. By Carl Mazur. Poured a huge 2 foot by 4 foot large canvas acrylic pour with Liquitex pouring medium, acrylic paint and Floetrol. This is a beginner abstract acrylic art tutorial. Used a primed or gesso canvas by Masterpiece Canvas Company.
    Large canvas pieces are complicated strictly because of the size and having to move the paint around is physically challenging for some.
    Fluid art or fluid painting is a passion of mine and I love to share it with ones that are beginners to painting this way. This is a great tutorial for beginners interested in how to learn more about liquid art, abstract art, fluid pours, fluid paint pours and so on. I use 100% acrylic paints in my paintings along with Floetrol, water, glue and or Liquitex pouring medium.
    I believe the colors really contrasted very nice with this piece. I still love it to this day.
    I finish all my paintings with Liquitex gloss varnishes for a nice clean finish that is shiny to the eye and touch.
    When it was in it's drying process on the canvas, I did have a problem with the canvas kind of getting wavy on me. I talked to the art store owner and he told me to just lightly use water on the back of the canvas to stretch it back out into place. I just used a light rag with water on it, and it worked like a charm! The large canvases are a bit more complicated to work with but wow do they make a statement. It's a definite showpiece on the living room wall.

    I paint in my kitchen because I can’t eat any more - so I’ve put it to good use. If you have carpet you can protect it by putting plastic down, then put down the interlocking square tiles in case you do drip paint. Nothing seems to get through. They can pack up very easily and don’t take up much room. I don’t even put the plastic down, but I have floorboards, not carpet. It works very well. You could cover half or all of the room every time you set up. You’re very brave painting over carpet! I wouldn’t do it as I’m too free with the paint!
    It looks as though your white may be a different consistency to your colours as I can see some have of the colours have sunk. I torch any canvas but use a heat gun between layers of Liquitex High Gloss. I give my work 4-5 coats before I sell them as it’s like liquid glass.

      Doesn't even have to be filtered so yes. And when mixing paint try not to be so quick with it because I know this dude's paint was filled with bubbles which changes the outcome of the painting.

    How long does the liquitex varnish sealer take to dry and when dry is it tacky and sticky? I can’t afford to waste any more money on sealers that dry sticky and tacky and stinks. Thanks for any advice . Debbie

    • @possumbold
      @possumbold Před 4 lety +1

      Debbie Jeffers I can answer this - it’s best to use a foam brush, Shake enough on the canvas to get decent coverage. The first coat will soak up the most, the last only a little. It usually feels dry after an hour, but if you don’t wait long enough you can overwork the gloss so that it becomes cloudy. It’s better to leave it for at least 3 hours or even overnight to be sure. The next coat will take less. Just put it on horizontally first, then vertical for better coverage. Don’t forget the sides. Use a heat gun to get any bubbles out, check the gloss from the side to make sure it’s all covered, then you can go in different directions or cross hatch. Minimal brush strokes are best. Use around 4-5 coats for a beautiful glassy finish. It doesn’t get too tacky but you shouldn’t add more once it starts to dry or it will react - instead wait until it dries then add a new coat if needed. Just don’t over brush or you could come back to it the next day and it will be cloudy and the gloss is gone. Wait until you have a few canvases and do them over a couple of days. A 4 ounce bottle will cover around 40 canvases of different sizes.

      Derek, mine was completely dry in a day. Now before I coated it I waited a number of days. The Liquitex Pouring Medium dries pretty quick for me. Note: I do live in a really dry desert area! Our humidity ratio is like 12% most days. That’s low.

    Why do you use Floetrol and pouring medium? I find using one or the other works just fine for me. Maybe I'm missing something?

    • @CarlMazur
      @CarlMazur  Před 6 lety +2

      I have found out that using pouring medium and floetrol makes doing the painting a bit smoother or easier. But... the downside to using floetrol is it breaks down the chemicals in the pouring medium so you won't get as much color "life" meaning the color stands up on the canvas just a tad more. In other words like the thickness of the pouring medium makes it stand up more. But really, I have had some wonderful pours with the floetrol added. The pouring medium by itself just doesn't flow off the sides as much and it wants to stay in one spot.

      Be careful on screwing the cups in... not to break through the other side. I wanted this painting to be totally fluid rather cells or not. Silicone gets in the way too. It’s oily and harder to clean.

      The Liquitex Pouring Medium is not a paint conditioner like Floetrol is. Floetrol just makes the mix smoother and dry better. The Liquitex is fun to do pours like this
