  • This week I tell you the story on how I first came to be in my shop, but also say goodbye to it. Cody and I are moving out of the City and into the country. We are still staying in Texas, but just wanted a little more leg room. Even though it's tough saying goodbye to a space I've invested a lot of time getting exactly the way I want/need it, I'm still very much looking forward to the future. I'll be designing and building my next shop which will be a huge challenge, but one that I am really looking forward to. Stay tuned because I'm bringing you guys along with me. Oh and don't worry, I'll still be making videos in the mean time. I'll just be floating around shopless for a while. ; )

April Wilkerson , I know how you feel about changing shops, I did the same almost a year ago. the main things I would recommend are build it bigger than you think you will need, wire it good with lots of outlet circuts led lighting and spray foam insulation. if you look,at some of my old videos you will see the shop differences

Spray foam insulation is good, but only if mixed properly. Look up poisoned houses here on CZcams, and you will see many who used it, then had an uninhabitable space because of the wrong chemical mixes. I am a fan of using fiberglass insulation, and styro board insulation, because there are now worries. :)

Long time watcher, first time commenter. When I saw the video title, I could not believe it. Not only is that shop a part of you, but you are a part of that shop (and that home). I nearly cried when you did not do the signature A.W. wave at the end. You have done so much making your home a better place. The new owners better appreciate all you have done! Your channel should be part of the Listing :-). Your home is famous! It is certainly bittersweet, but I am definitely looking forward to all of the new projects you will have. At one point, I actually wondered if you would ever run out, but no more! Congrats on your next step in life. I cannot wait to see the new shop you build. It is going to be absolutely amazing.

: ) If you can believe it, I still had five pages of to-do projects I wanted to get done for the house. But oh well. The house and shop were perfect but just in the wrong location. Cody and I have always wanted to be in the country so no matter how fond of the house I was, I knew from the day we bought it that it wasn't going to be our forever home. It's alright though, it's part of our story and I'm glad for it.

Sit down and draw up some sketches of the perfect shop for you with an attached office space including a bathroom. My wife and I decide to move out of FL to TN. I had a shop just like yours, built from the ground up in a two car garage. It was the place I learned all of machining and welding skills. I had to sell a lot of machinery that meant a lot to me, like a vertical mill I restored from scratch, or the cabinets I learned to weld together. We spend about a year in a temporary home until getting a new home. It was a good time to step back and plan what I really wanted. Now it's an air conditioned space twice the size of what I had before. Anyway, life is a journey, not the destination. Good luck April!

Wow! What an absolute TRIP! I came across your site a few moments ago and, you, just like me, are evolving, growing, learning, and gaining courage to do an be what your talents and abilities dictate you should do and be! I am so proud of you and, even if he does not say so, your guy is proud of you too. Men like women who blossom and do things that are helpful to the family, and who are not so timid that they never bust out of their shells and become the artists that are inside of them. I do a great many kinds of things and I do many of them very well. I take raw fiber (wool, cotton, etc) and turn them into yarn on spinning wheels that are older than I am (1840 to 1900) and then, on a loom that is being renovated by myself, want to weave those yarns into fiber for clothes that I want to design myself. I also knit, crochet, make my own bath and laundry soaps, make wine, cheese, my own apple cider vinegar, bake all of my own breads, cakes, rolls, etc and many other things. Last year a friend of mine let me turn wood for the first time and I have the piece I made in my weaving room! Now I come across you just now and, even as you are saying goodby to your shop, FEAR NOT! You are about to embark upon an EPIC journey of self discovery and real fun. There will be challenges, but they are going to be what make you into who you were meant to be and will tell you more about yourself than you can even imagine! You Go Girl! I had no idea I could ever renovate an 8 shaft floor loom and reconfigure a major design error!! I did not know I liked wood turning or wood working. My husband asked me night before last, as I watched a Japanese wood worker make a simple but lovely chair, if learning how to wood work was on my agenda next and I said "yes". Well..here I am. Watching you and saying,,BONUS!!! May I embark on your journey with you? So many of us are learning, growing, becoming what we were meant to be and having a bundle of fun at the same time!! I will be 60 years old in May of 2017 and this old dog has learned so many new tricks that I just don't think I am....old.

Hi April, been in your shoes. Built a shop from the ground up, set it up over the years and then sold the house because my youngest daugher and the quality of school she went to was more important. I even sold my machines to pay for the remodel to the house before we sold it. I built the house too...long story short, I am in a new space and aquired more machines and am in the process of setting up. Yes, I shed a few tears when all was gone and the shop was empty....my daughter turned out great! :-)

Glad to hear that you are going to do "on the fly" woodworking to keep us entertained. I would like to pass on one suggestion on planning your new shop. Take enough time to list everything you want in the new shop (dream big) and add at least 15% more space, electrical and dust collection that you think you will need. It is better to have more than you need that to have to compromise.

You have a golden opportunity to build a shop exactly the way you want it, unencumbered by any restrictions imposed by an existing structure. Still, I can completely understand how you might be feeling now about leaving a space you invested so much time and effort into. But, as you said, all that time and effort has resulted in who you are and what you have accomplished until now, so while you are losing a physical space, you are taking all the experience and memories with you. Building a new shop from scratch will also be an education, I'm sure! Looking forward to your future videos of that process, as I am sure I will learn even more than I have from watching your videos so far.

April, I have followed you and some of the awesome designs that you have shared with the world. Yes, you may be closing one book, but you have a new book to write. Just imagine, now you can take the time to plan and build something that you can really call your own and you can share it with the world. You dreams. I'm really excited to see what you and your hubby come up with.

This video is my first introduction to your channel and I clicked because of your title. I make custom boat canvas and am currently in my third shop in 15 years. In leaving my prior two shops, I was immediately moving into remodeled or new and improved space but it was still a bit emotional saying goodbye. I like my house but there is nothing quite so personal and gratifying as the space where we imagine, design, fabricate and sometimes do over. Just walking in and turning on the lights feels good. I subscribed and look forward to watching your videos and seeing what you build for your new space. Best wishes on your new adventure!

April, what a fantastic video. I TOTALLY get how you feel, but remember once you start your new shop you will be so thrilled! I am in a similiar situation. I have a small shop behind my garage. It's my santuary, "happy place", and so much more. Later this year, we will be moving to Florida from Maryland. There I am taking the one car garage and making it my new "happy place"! I am already planning in my head everything I will be doing. I will besad leaving this one, but I know the new one will be bigger and better! Your videos have been so instrumental in giving me great ideas and guidance in becoming a better woodworker. Congrats on your new place! You go girl!!! I will be waiting for your next video!!!

April Sometimes moving is better, my first shop was a 2 car
garage and I set it up just the way I wanted it then I saw a house for sale
that had more land so I bought it for the future of having a larger shop. So
two years after buying the house I staked out a spot, went to the Kubota dealer
bought a new tractor cleared the land and built a 30 by 60 new shop from the
ground up I divided it in 2 half for a wood shop and the other half for all the
toys and I love it, so does everyone else that wants to work on their toys. I’m
now looking at a bigger piece of property and it does not have a shop, so I may
just have to stake out another area and build one, it’s all about the pride you
put in to it that gives you that warm fuzzy feeling in the end.

I had a house some years ago with no land to build a shop. So I had to put my shop in the basement. Built in 1915, the basement was almost an entire floor from the surface. So all the tools had to be carried in, then out when I sold the place. Oh, and 1915 doors weren't nearly as wide as doors today. But I digress.. get the shop up & running as soon as possible so you don't have to store all the tools in a very unhelpful place.
