- I review the Ford Maverick Mini Pick-up truck with the 2L Ecoboost engine, I discussing towing ability, max payload, pros and cons with the 2L ecoboost engine, the optional 2.5L hybrid engine and the impressive fuel economy. At the end of the day is this a REAL pick up truck and should you consider it when buying a truck?

Well I figured it was time to look at some smaller trucks and I figured it was time to start here with the ford maverick because I think it is an interesting truck.
My goal for this video was to determine if this little truck was indeed meant to be used as a pick up truck or if it was a gimmick. first off is the 2L ecoboost engine. I discuss the both the benefits and issues with this 2L ecoboost engine when buying one. but overall they are not bad engines.
I also talk about the hybrid options for these Maverick trucks and discuss the specs and power numbers associated with the 2.5L hybrid engine. I also talk about the awesome fuel economy and MPG numbers with the hybrid engine.
Next is the towing and payload numbers. the towing is pretty weak but the payload numbers around 1,500lbs is actually very impressive
the other thing I like about this small truck is how easy it is to use. I can access the bed very easily and I can also get in the truck nice and easily.
I think the biggest downfalls for this truck are if you need to tow anything or want some decent off-road performance this is not the truck right truck for you.
also the bed size roughly 4'5 X 4 is not very large so if you are needing to load up lumber or drywall this may not be the right truck for you and you may need to upgrade to a full size truck like an F150.

**Update, The coolant issue with the 2L Ecoboost has been fixed which is great news, Secondly I was NOT able to tow with the Maverick just got rained out. But if there is enough interest I'll get this truck back on the channel and we'll do a towing loop and payload test. I think it will be fun!
I would love to see a towing and mpg test
Not sure if it's a "worthy truck" but still remains the best vehicle launch since the late 1990s Honda Civic(s) and appears indeed to have preactical purpose in mind as well. Everything else remains ... still ... a crazy shoe box on wheels for some reason excepting #sadly now bk Fisker
I'd love to see an mpg loop. I've been trying to convince my bosses we need one as a work truck for when we need to move guys more than stuff. We've got a GMC 2500 extended cab that gets 10mpg and a regular cab f150 that's getting like 12-13mpg. If you need to move 4 guys and a couple tool bags, the maverick starts to make a lot more sense. Had to drive the 2500 to our warehouse for some clocks the other day... Felt pretty overkill
Tow with it, let’s see what she can do!
Yes, please tow with this!
Used to have a F150 but it was getting old. So looked at a Ranger, Maverick, and Ridgeline. I went with the Ridgeline even though it was over $10K USD more than a Maverick, just seams like a better vehicle. And no turbos to worry about. And it’s built in the USA.
J35 is bullet proof
Glad to see your doing small/midsize trucks. Good job! Keep it up!
Hoping to continue doing the smaller trucks! super useful the right person.
I have three trucks, F100 restomod, 2018 F150 XLT FX4 and a F350 4WD flatbed. I have seriously considered a Maverick as an addition to my small fleet. As garage fitment goes, I build the garage on our house to generously accommodate my F150.
Looking forward to this series!
The 2.0t had a redesign of the coolant slots between the cylinders to fix the coolant issues. The slot was replaced with a drilled hole to increase the head gasket width between the cylinders. I had my short block replaced under warranty on my 2017 Lincoln MKZ with the updated design.
Thank you sir!
Yup, the redesign was in 2020 so any 2.0 made mid 2020+ has the new block
It's as much of a truck as most people really need and that's just fine. I think it fills a niche that hasn't been filled for many years and I appreciate that it's doing that
The Maverick is a great little pickup. I think the segment will become quite popular if Ram and GM decide to join the fray.
A small class GM pickup with the 2.7 turbo max engine would rip hard off-road if they built everything around the engine tough enough.
The Maverick is the perfect small truck. Ram should bring over the ram 1200. GM will be late to the game and screw it up as usual
Maverick is based. Anytime a tundra or 1/2 owner makes fun just show them payload sticker “not a truck” Maverick says 1500lb what’s your 1/2 ton say?
Yeah always funny people trying to act macho and using what they drive to try and "prove" that to others. Maverick is great for what it is. My bare bones F-150 has a 2060lb payload but to be honest I could probably get away with a Ranger or Maverick most of the time.
1500 lbs is also pretty similar to what you get on a Ram Power Wagon, since its GVWR is derated for its off-road suspension. The Maverick isn't particularly good at off roading or towing, but the size is great for many people, and its payload is pretty surprisingly good.
My half ton says haul 1500 pounds every day with it and see how long it lasts
lol I love this, I have a crew cab long bed f150 it’s payload is 1895, I saw a powerboost with a 1212 payload, at that point, as cool as the onboard generator is, there no way you could tow a camper and a family and not be far far over payload
2021 F150 one ton payload, 2k lbs
I bought a 2024 Maverick about 3 months ago. Mine is the XL model and I really like it. The Ecoboost engine is averaging between 28 and 29 miles per gallon over the first 2200 miles. It handles and drives much better than my old Ranger, and gets over 20 percent better gas mileage. It is also nice having a back seat with storage under the seat.
Great info! 👍👍
Thank you sir
I say buy what you like.
I have a 2023 XLT 2.0 FWD. I don’t need all wheel drive and I see front wheel drive as a “poor man’s” four wheel drive. I don’t need a big truck and personally don’t like the looks of them. I basically needed a reasonably priced and sized vehicle that could carry four people and have an open bed when I need to haul something odd sized or dirty and I can haul a motorcycle around.
Almost zero chance I’ll ever get anywhere near 1500 pounds in the back.
So far I’m getting on average 30-31 mpg with probably 70% 2 lane road and 30% city driving.
I’m not really thrilled it’s a ford as I don’t have a ton of faith in the long term reliability of it but as far as design and features it’s like they read my mind and made the perfect vehicle for me.
Incredible review sir Alex. This is your best work yet
Thank you sir
I've got the exact same truck but the hybrid version. For bigger stuff I tow a 6x10 ft aluminum trailer. Did a 400 mile trip with 400cc bike and small ATV including hilly terrain (WV) with ease on gravel roads. Including highway got a combined 18.5mpg doing legal speeds. Mixed driving unhitched average is so far 44-45mpg. 7,000 miles in 5 months with no problems. Bought a cap and a pullout bed = great tool truck for farm chores. Perfect all around commuter. For heavier duty the HD farm truck steps in. Front wheel drive in winter is like 1/2 an AWD😜
It's a baby truck with a payload of an F-150. Neighbor has one with over 1500lbs payload on the door sticker but only tows baby trailers. The gas mileage of the hybrid is quite nice and heard a rumor that AWD will be paired with hybrid in 2025+, but I don't follow the little trucks closely.
It would make sense for the Ford to include the AWD with the hybrid. hopefully they do.
I'm excited for this series! If I didn't need a full size for towing / working, like if I was an office guy, I'd totally get a Maverick or Ranger. Ive always loved the mini trucks.
Drove one a few months ago and was impressed with what it is for the money. Would not replace my F150, but I would recommend one for what it is.
I love it!! If I ever need to downsize from my F150 I'm having one.
Looks like it's the same size as my 1st gen and 2nd Gen Ford rangers. Glad Ford did put a mini truck out
My dads maverick gets 52 city. It really makes me want one now a days.
It’s got a good looking profile especially when lowered .
Their has been a vehicle class for over 90 years for this type of vehicle (Ford came up with it), it absolutely fits in to this class. Its a "Coupe Utility" or a "Ute". Its a "Passenger car based vehicle with an intergraded cargo tray." It shares the same unibody platform as the Escape and the Focus. Can I call the Subaru Brat or the El Comino a truck? Great video! Thanks.
Greetings Alex.
The Maverick is an excellent option for light loads, preferably city trips and occasionally dirt roads; without compromising its traction capabilities. The advantages of size and maneuvering in increasingly tight parking spaces is another plus. But the advantage to consider is its PERFORMANCE (MPG). Without a doubt, its maintenance cost and valve carbonization problems due to its direct injection and exhaust gas management must be considered. In my humble opinion an EXCELLENT PURCHASE OPTION!! Your analysis is EXCELLENT. THANK YOU very much for sharing your videos!!
A HUG and BLESSINGS Alex!! 🤠
A family member has a 2016 Fusion AWD 2.0 Ecoboost with well over 150,000 miles on it and it still runs strong. It has not shown any performance problems due to carbon buildup and the turbo is the original with no issues. Properly maintained these engines will last. Being turbo charged you need to change the oil more often than Ford schedule 5,000 to 8,000 miles depending on usage. City driving requires more frequent changes.
I had an FX4 Maverick for awhile. I really liked it and was very impressed with it's capabilities.
Only got rid of it because I wanted an F150 Tremor more.
Great review, you should look at doing some a single cab half ton truck. They can be made very affordable.compared to others.
Those things are hard to come by. But I agree, pretty ram doesnt even make standard cab truck anymore, at least here in canada anyways it seems
Considered buying the 2.0L, AWD and tow package Maverick for over a year. Ended up getting a 2.7L GMC Sierra with tow package for a similar price point. Just far more capabilities in the 1500 than the Maverick. Still a solid option for those who don't need the capabilities of a body on frame truck.
I would absolutely get a Maverick or something like a Hyundai Santa Cruz. I currently drive an F350 Power Stroke crew cab and would like to not have to use it for basic stuff. I want tio be able to hop in a much small daily driver and go do what I need to when not towing or hauling big stuff for the home.
These trucks really do make a lot of sense as a daily driver. I don’t know anyone with the hybrid getting less than 30 mpg. The 2.0 ecoboost got the updated block in 2020 I believe. My wife has the 2.0 in her Lincoln and it makes some impressive power for its size and compared to other engines in its class. I work in construction and you’d be surprised how many of them I see as fleet vehicles.
Ordered my 2024 XLT in Carbon Gray
I love the idea of these super little pickups. If someone else made them besides hyundai and ford, I would probably buy one when I'm done with school.
Honda ? lol the old Ridgeline
@@TheGettyAdventures no, the Ridgline is a little bigger than the maverick, I thought it was semi-trying to compete with trucks like the Tacoma. I was thinking if Toyota made a little baby truck like the maverick it would be perfect.
If you only need a vehicle for light duty work this looks like a great alternative to a full or mid size truck. Most people who buy a full size truck but don’t use it as a work truck never come close to utilizing their “real” truck to its full capability.
As per se, a small pickup truck is not a bad thing. It's the application that counts - as you correctly pointed out 👍
Were the Chevy El Camino, Ford Ranchero, VW Rabbit Pickup ... pickups ? So yes. Looking forward to more. Spyshots seem to imply that '25 will have hybrid AWD.
Hopefully they drop the Hybrid with the AWD it only makes sense.
If I didn’t have to tow a 7000 lb trailer I’d 100% get a Maverick - it would work just fine for everything else.
PS: I saw a Maverick at a campground pulling a Winnebago Micro Minnie (about 4200 lb UVW)! Yikes!
Either that truck is lifted or you’re vertically challenged, I can touch the bottom of most boxes 😉. Miss you buddy!! See you soon !!
Good review. But if I'm looking for a truck in this class (small/mid size unibody) it would be Honda Ridgeline all the way.
If you order it with tow package you also get 373 gears. I had one for 50,000k and I got more than I paid for it. I would buy another one. Handy little rig. Came with a brake controller too!
Yes sir, nothing wrong with more aggressive gears on this little rig
Great review. People get hung up too much on the "real truck" nonsense. Most trucks are either commuters or lifestyle vehicles. I doubt more than 1 out of 10 are used seriously.
Suggestion: I'm not sure if it is available in Canada, but one I would love for you to take a crack at is the 3.3 NA truck.
those engines are slim, but have run into a couple. I believe they are no longer making them with the 2.7L ecoboost now being the base engine?
@@TheGettyAdventures I believe they are still available for fleet sales, and maybe a few sneak out for the market. It appears that you cannot order a truck with one however.
my wife wants one. its perfect for her. great gas milage
If you want an aggressive grill you gots to pay extra for the aggressive grill package. It's an extra $8,000CDN but you can spread the payments over 8 or 10 years.
I drive the inlaws maverick it gets a constant 25.9 miles to the gallon In the Appalachian mountains!
Well I got one exactly like that that 36 mph 31 average it makes a great truck for the light duty stuff and the wife can handle it without backing one of my other trucks in to stuff
lol I didn't want to explicitly say it BUT a perfect truck for the wife.
There are no exhaust manifolds on the 2.0 Ecoboost. Turbo bolts right to the head and the head has the exhaust manifold cast into it. Also the block has been revised to eliminate the coolant issue as stated above.
Doesn't come in Awd in hybrid form.... yet! Also, did they solve the coolant leaking into the cylinder a few years ago???
Yes a couple people have mentioned the coolant issue being fixed, and it does seem like ford will bring the AWD to the hybrid. I hope they do.
Hybrid awd is what I want. They make that for under $25k usd, and I’ll be at the ford dealer tomorrow
Ford Ranger next..... my boyyyy
A 3 liter diesel version or an electric gas engine combined of this thing with beefier parts to tow 5500 -6000 pounds would be nice !Especialy with an off road package with 2 inch higher overall ,a much more optional and modular vehicle just smaller than a Ranger .At the same time keeping the price tag under 65k!
Ever heard of the 3.0 duramax in the 1500 Silverado? What about the 2.8 duramax in the Colorado or Canyon? Look up the numbers on the 2.8
Has Alex tested a Frontier SV long bed 4x4?
With a lift/bigger tires they actually look good
If they came with a 6ft bed option it would be great for work
Ram has the Rampage in Brazil .. I think it should be sold here as well probably kill their 1/2 ton sales.. I hardly ever tow so I would dump my 1500 in a second …. Maybe a baby hurricane engine!!
pls pls ..keep the l/100km numbers for your canucks fans.., its easier if you can display both pls
Hi Alex, It's a real baby truck. Is the Honda Ridgeline a real truck too?
I mean I would have to say yes - to the right person.
It's so cute, just like you!
Oh thank you.
A 1400-1600 lb payload is pretty much a necessity to do anything. Most SUVs have that as a standard payload target as well.
I traded my 2019 f150 Lariat for 2023 Maverick Lariat 2.0l. The F150 had a payload rating of 1620lbs. The Maverick is rated at 1490lbs. I had a 2018 F150 that was only rated at 1280lbs. The bed is plenty big for what I need on a regular bases and is only 12 inches shorter than my F150 bed was. Much nicer truck than my 2008 and 2012 Rangers and much more comfortable. I loved my F150s but the Maverick is much more suited my need and much easier to live with on a day to day basis.
This truck reminds me of inflation or shrinkflation. Same price as an f150 from a few generations ago. Kids, behold!
To answer your Q, too small. I owned Tacoma for 6 months, could not wait to trade out of it. I took a picture at the dealership of it parked next to the half ton I traded it for and it was dwarfed in comparison. And it was a TRD Offroad with longbed. Coming froma 1st gen Tundra I thought it would be a comparable size. Definitely not.
Its not for everyone, I agree with you, its too small for my needs.
@@TheGettyAdventures Hauling needs aside, the interior was cramped and uncomfortable. Supposedly they improved it.
It's a new version of the old Ranger. And here in the Maritimes......they're still EVERYWHERE!!!
I've got a 2019 Ranger and I still my '07 Ranger desperately.. My next vehicle will be a Maverick. Just waiting for the 2025 rumors to be fulfilled of a Hybrid AWD extended cab.
You need to check out that titan. There's not a lot of information on them but they're great. I have a 2018 midnight and I absolutely love it. Especially the power
The best bang for the buck in this segment is the Nissan Frontier
I don’t think this truck competes directly with the Frontier. The Maverick is more of a competitor to mid size crossover SUVs.
the Frontier is certainly a great option I don't disagree
@@TheGettyAdventures maybe you can get a hold of one and let us know what you think
You should do the Hyundai Santa Cruz now
That thing is apparently pretty quick with the 2.5L turbo
Meh. My old Sport Trac has a real body-on-frame chassis, a real longitudinal RWD/AWD drivetrain, a real V-8 engine and a real Class 4 trailer hitch. The plastic bed is fine for my needs, and the IRS only makes it more car-like which is a compromise in the direction I want. Sometimes it's about actual capability, not bluffing about it.
I forgot to mention it's a 2024.5 model and it cost me the equivalent of $33k USD brand new..
Let me just say something else before I explode. You cannot buy an *F150 XLT* down here in the states with a heated steering wheel. Fact check me. That's pretty amazing that the maverick has it.
I was impressed with the options on this thing. BUT there are only like 3 trim levels I believe so they got to fit stuff in I guess lol
@@TheGettyAdventures From my recent escapades in new truck shopping, the cheapest trim for an F150 with a heated steering wheel was the Lariat and that was over $70k USD. But walk across the street to the Chevy store, and you can find heated steering wheels in trucks costing much less. What's annoying is they'll pack all this stuff into other models, car based models and it will be included for a lot less moolah.
Isn’t the Maverick a FWD truck?
The hybrid is front wheel drive. The Ecoboost 2.0l is available in front wheel drive in the USA or all wheel drive. The 2.0l is only available in all wheel drive in Canada.
Ram is out of their mind $70,000 for basic truck. $900 a month for 96 months 😂
Suggestion review the Jeep Gladiator.
Honestly I had the maverick or the gladiator this weekend and well took the maverick so maybe I'll get the gladiator next time its available.
Real truck, not a real truck, I don't care. Just offer it with a single or access cab and a 6' bed too. If they did, I'd buy one.
Agreed, 6 foot bed would be more useable.
Good little grocery getter, but not quite a "truck". Do a review a the Ford Ranger, a actual body on frame truck.
By definition it is a truck. A truck is a style nothing more.
Has a bed. Payload meant for more than just moving people. Tie downs. Sounds like a truck to me.
I mean yes and no, the fact that it has a bed would make it a truck but I agree the frame on body is much more traditional for a truck.
@@BradyReading My golfcart meets that same criteria, as does my SXS and yes it's registered for the road.
@@dpl2617 Now you’re getting it! Hand carts are also called “hand trucks”. The term truck came before the automobile and the “pickup truck” is simply a style of automobile. Why else is it under the style category along with SUV, sedan, coupe, etc.
That size is great for certain lifestyles. Just look at the Stout diesel. We need something like that here. I wish the Maverick had a better injection system. Concern is carbon buildup.
We have ~90k on our 2015 Focus 2.0 Ecoboost and it's doing perfectly still. Have a catch can on it that gets cleaned every oil change (5k intervals) but even without it I doubt we'd have any issues that could not be remedied pretty quickly/easily.
Grandsons 2016 Fusion AWD 2.0l turbo has over 150,000 miles with no carbon problems and still running on original turbo. It has not had any engine related issues and it is the old style block that is supposedly prone to coolant problems.
No a truck has a 8 ft bed, rwd, and a manual trans.
This is a AWD car at best
I saw someone towing a 14-16’ trailer loaded up with lumber with a maverick, dicey!
If it had a simple v6 maybe I’d get one but with the 2.0 eco oops that would be no.
Dicey indeed! Apparently on the forms people are towed like 8k with the maverick lol I wouldn't.
"Is it a real truck?" Who cares what you call it, does it do what you need it to do? Do you enjoy the way it looks and drives? Call it a turnip for all anyone cares. 🤪
That fuel economy is nothing to write home about; my 2.0 td Ranger averages 7.5 L/100km (over 30 mpg)
I know it's a diesel, but it's still a bigger and heavier car than the Maverick.
Having said that, I think they're really cool and if you could buy them in Australia I reckon I'd buy one 👍
Get a Nissan frontier.
Great looking truck
@@TheGettyAdventures had a 14 Nissan Xterra 4x4 should have kept. The new Nissan trucks are the best for the money right now. Prices may vary depending on state to state. Grab a green, tan or off color to keep the value up.
“So….except for these 3 major engine problems it could be a reliable truck”
Yikes
I see no use for this vehicle. That said, please strap 4k to it and see what happens 😂
Similarly, your pickup comes up short to the trucks we use in our quarry. Yours is probably not a real truck, more like a poser. Just saying......
@cwqrpportable 23' GMC 3500 drw.. definitely a shortcoming..
@@chadmiller6487 Chad, you need to learn that your truck isn’t an extension of your own shortcomings. I have equipment that dwarfs your truck but I don’t boast like you do.
Thing looks ridiculous under the hood. Needs a plastic engine cover or something 😂
A bit like an updated improved Subaru Baja.
Something like that!
Not technically a truck and neither is the Ridgeline, but they both have a useful roll to fill and are fine enough automobiles. I refuse to accept the "it has a bed on it so it's a truck" ignorance. A jet ski is not a boat, a side by side is not a car and a Bronco is not a Jeep.
maverick, lol what an unfortunate name. those of us you were driving in the 1970's would remember the maverick back then! only thing worse was the pinto.
Good thing it's only a name.
That's not a truck, it's just an awd focus with a trunk lid delete.
lol the 'trunk lid delete" Love it! I mean its not a frame on body which certainly makes its questionable
@@TheGettyAdventures I kid, but I did seriously look at it. Like you, I found the towing just too little for my needs. Would love to see a 2024 Canyon review though!
Not worthy with 20k marks ups 😂
I paid MSRP for my 2023 Lariat AWD.
@Bob-xc2us how much did you pay? these trucks were $26,000 when they first came out. Still only worth that, no matyer what trim you got.......
@@darthgator5990 I'm in Canada so I paid just under $50,000.00 Canadian for a loaded Lariat. That's around $36.000.00 USD. Lariat Luxury package, 4k tow package, black appearance package., Alto blue color, floor liners, B&O sound system etc.
Sorry but junk 😂
I started watching your channel because you had interesting thoughts about diesel engines and more, but you make such mistakes more and more often that I have the impression that you get something to use for 1-2 days and you immediately become a specialist.
First example - comparing the load capacity of a half ton with a 3/4 by placing the load in the half ton behind the rear axle. The next one was "revelations" about the regen in the petrol Tundra (luckily you deleted this video), now you compare a small unibody bed to a fullsize bed - do you really think that potential buyers don't know this?
Why don't you compare it in a practical way by including, for example, 20 items per trip - you may be surprised. Why doesn't the film include the opinion of someone who might be interested in such a pickup - a friend, maybe a family member? 1.5 minutes about the engine only?
Does it all still make sense or are you just counting on clicks?
Wow nice comment, not! Must be tough being so perfect.
@@michaely936 I don't know what it's like to be perfect - it's probably hard for yourself and everyone around you. But this comment is not about perfection, just to think about the future of the channel. If I didn't care, I would just ignore it and not comment on anything, but I know from life that sometimes if someone tells you something that you can't see and others didn't have the courage, even though it's unpleasant, it can change something for the better.
Do we really want another - thousandth or more - channel that will read parameters from a piece of paper, sometimes adding a photo? I'm writing this because this channel has more potential.
CVT ? if yes then pass.. I'll keep my Gladiator
Hybrid is an planetary eCVT. The Ecoboost is an 8 speed torque converter.
No CVT.
600k on a ford Cmax with the original motor and transmission. Sold it to a friend's dad, he still drives it.
It is an ECVT and not a CVT. CVTs use a metal belt like a snowmobile drive system. An ECVT uses planetary gears. The Maverick ECTV is almost identical to the very reliable setup used by Toyota in their hybrid vehicles. The 2.0l Ecoboost Mavericks use a traditional 8-speed automatic transmission.
It used to be cheap, and at those prices who cares what it is.
I think you'd need a wife to help you get those stupid pants off at the end of a day.
