Analytics work in the regular season and over a large sample size. But at the end of games - in all the major sports - players have to make plays and coaches need to take the situation into account.

Defense wins championship. Boston is averaging a score that would have been the lowest in the NBA regular season. Their defense has been consistently the best in the playoffs.

The Celtics are not winning because of the offense. It is because of great defense. The Mavs couldn't score over 100 points in all 3 games. It is about great defensive players, good defensive schemes, rebounding, forcing turnovers.

We have gotten to the point where we're degrading Championships before they are even won. Now winning 1 Chip as a team isn't enough.
Broussard still doesn’t want to give the Celtics organization credit for developing and signing the appropriate players for our system. In addition, it’s about having two way players and players that are willing to play their role

Yah 3 is better than 2 but how'd that game end last night? Tatum missing a 3 and brown pulling up at the corner of the foul line and barely touched the net. Believe that's a mid range? Or driving to the basket and Luka deciding to try and play defense for the first time and take a charge when he has 5 fouls already. Half their shots are 3 point attempts and half of those are Tatum alone. When the other team is going on a run Tatum keeps hucking up his step back 3s while brown goes to the basket.

During that run in the fourth Tatum didn’t touch the ball for 5 to 6 possessions even tho he had Kyrie or Tim Hardaway Jr on him instead brown took bad shots or turnover and Pritchard took 4 bad shots n a row . Now did Tatum take a bad shot when he got it ? Yes but don’t miss the obvious neither yall find any reason to blame Tatum

Kyrie, Luka gettin cooked and Kyrie not scoring in game one and 2 or the Mavericks supporting players not showing up had way more to do with them losing then "analytics, 3s > 2s" ball.

Tatum scores 31 brown scores 30 on 5 or 6 + less shots and brown is shooting well over 50% while Tatum is somewhere around 26%? The Celtics pass the ball around and build a 20 point lead but when the Mavs start coming back it's huck a 3 the second the ball touches Tatum's hands. He's a great player but he's gets into his own head. Same way Kyrie can say the fans weren't that loud but looked like a bench player in the first 2 games in Boston yet scores 30+ in Dallas.
The Celtics just have a great roster of talent that fit. Udoka took them to the finals with a lesser roster and lesser analytical game plan

@@mikeg8221 well porzingis basically cancells out Rob Williams since he's only played 6 playoff games. Rob Williams, Grant Williams, Malcolm Brogdon better bench than Hauser, Pritchard and Horford. Holiday is notch above Smart. They had a 2-1 lead in finals in Tatum didn't get outplayed by Wiggins they would've won. That team was more than good enough to win it all. That team even had Pritchard and Hauser off bench.
Disrespect to Pistons' 04 team is crazy. Ben, Rip, Tayshaun, Lindsey, Corliss, and ofc Chauncy and Rasheed. These guys make it sound like they were a one-and-done. 1. Pistons made 6x consecutive ECF's 2003-2008. Thats the Chauncy Pistons' era. Your narrative is they're a one-and-done miracle, when they're clearly not. You're wrong.
2. Lakers were an 87.5% favorite to win title in 2004. Your narrative is the Lakers were somehow a broken/old/divided team that miraculously skipped past the entire WC to embarrass themselves in the Finals. Forget Kobe and Shaq. Even without 2x Top 10 All-Time easy HOFers, your logic is laughable. Were 04 Lakers perfect? No. Did Kobe and Shaq win 3 of 4 previous championships going into facing Pistons? Yes. Only Laker win was Game 2 in OT at home. It was one of the original gentlemen sweeps because of how dominant the Pistons were. You're wrong.
3. 05 Pistons lost finals in 7 vs Spurs (another all-time great team, please dispute that, lol). Finals were too close to call and consensus was in 6 or 7 either way. Game 5 OT had iconic Sheed/Horry moment after Chauncy missing layup to go up by 4 with 9secs left. Many say this is smallest of small moments that prevented Pistons from repeating. Your narrative is Pistons were fortunate in 04. You're wrong. (Malice at the Palace, losing Corliss, Mike James and Okur and Coach Brown drama also distracted Pistons in 05.)
4. Your narrative is one ring is worthless or at least no reason to be celebrated or respected. How many players, coaches, teams dont even have one ring? Is winning one chip easy? You're wrong.
5. 2005 saw wholesale rule changes in the NBA. 04 Pistons are so revered because they were the last Defense First champs. Pistons' defense beat Lakers' star-studded offense, while the Pistons themselves had individual offensive ability operating in a "ball-sharing, unselfish, defensive, rebounding and respectful way" (Larry Brown, copyrighted) system. Your narrative is that they are worthless now in 120-115 regular timed games. You're wrong.

Quantity is the name of the game in taking shots that are worth 50% more than ones inside the arc. You don’t need to shoot as high a percentage. Tatum contested stepbacks aside, the Celtics offense generates very good quality three-point looks - drive, kick, swing, swing, open three - very efficient shot.

Yes.. although I loved Marcus' leadership (his calling out of Brown and Tatum in late 21, spearheaded their turnaround, and run to the 22' Finals). But his shot selection in key moments were never "smart". Lol. Jrue and Derrick have brought so much levity, to that position in critical moments. That was very much needed.

Dallas was a good defensive team half the year, especially the playoffs. Boston was an outstanding defensive team all year. Both these teams showed up defensively in the Finals, and Boston just had more options to score against a good defense than the Mavs did.
I love my Celtics and I’m glad they are better at playing this “analytic” style of basketball than anybody else is right now. But it is NOT an enjoyable brand to watch. I’m sorry. I root for my team but I preferred how they used to play offense.

as a math guy, theres always more to it then %. For instance 33% compared to 50% means therell be quite a lot more misses, which menas more rebounds to be had. since its a long range shot its more likely to end up in a fast break when you miss it.
Also take JT, hes 1 of the worst volume 3pt shooters off the dribble , now if he got the ball 10-15 feet from the basket, it takes him 1 dribble and few steps to get to the basket or he can post up and shoot over most ppl.. which makes more sense?

Analytical people need to get laid more instead of being concerned with two and three pointers. The higher the percentage of the shot based on location is what matters, simply make the higher percentage shot.
