  • Secondary Ignition waveform analysis and relative compression testing is performed in this video using a uScope from AESwave. Here is the kit I was using www.aeswave.com...
    There is also a basic kit where you can use your amp probe and other accessories from other scopes. www.aeswave.com...
    For more information on this topic, I have written a “field manual” called Engine Performance Diagnostics which is available at www.scannerdanner.com as an eBook or paper book.

    On ScannerDanner Premium I will bring you right into my classroom at Rosedale Technical College. You will find page for page lectures taken right from my book as well as exclusive classroom type case studies. What is so special about these classroom case studies? I pull live problem vehicles directly into my classroom and we troubleshoot them in real time, using and applying the theory and testing procedures we learn during the classroom lectures. hot soak after run hood closed in summer heat on restart often causes secondary winding breakdown of insulation in coils and other electronics.Old school trick on bikes and older motors was to pull plug wire half way off plug which would increase energy of spark at gap to clear fouled plugs Surprised you didn't do a cylinder efficiently test at idle in gear to rule out low cylinder compression. Good testing .

I also don't like that it does not have scales per division so you don't have to do the math,. It is a nuisance ! Check out CAutomation's post below. He has some good info too ! All in all it is a very high quality scope for the price !

    Why does the U-scope not need some type of protection from the high KV? Where you use attenuators on other systems.

    • @jayelms2706
      @jayelms2706 Před 4 lety

      For this case, as long as you don't open a HV circuit there's no need for protection because all the U-Scope is reading comes from an induced pulse, a magnetic pulse coming out of the wire, I mean you are not unplugging any spark plug. If there's a leak through a defective wire (a crack for example) then you need to avoid any physical contact at that very point which at a darker hour could be seen as a little spark (electric arc).

    • @glowvid
      @glowvid Před dnem

      If you were to check the primary side even though it's 12v power to coil and injectors the windings in the coil and injectors can have a high snap back voltage spike as coil field collapses so you'd want to protect scope w an attunement 10x or 20x depending on your scope. Mine is rated to 300v but Pico and uscope are rated lower so need attunement

  • @DJDevon3
    @DJDevon3 Před 9 lety

    Is there a way to pause or record the waveform to memory other than taking a BMP screenshot? A trigger record function would be nice when you were trying to capture the cranking waveform. Running from the driver seat back to the scope after cranking would be frustrating without a video camera to record the event. Seems a bit silly to run from the car to engine just to see a waveform for a few seconds before it is rewritten by the next screen.

    • @glowvid

      I think if you set trigger right and set to single mode it should catch it and not overwrite it

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  Před 9 lety +2

      Yes, it could be an intake manifold gasket leak. Once the engine warms up the manifold and cylinder head expand and stops the leak. With the engine cold use a squirt gun filled with water and direct it at the manifold gasket area. I actually have a few videos where I show finding a vacuum leak with water.
      Another cause is early stages of headgasket failure. Are you adding coolant at all?

      Yes, you can do a relative compression test with the uScope. But you will not be able to determine by the scope alone which cylinder is which because it is only one channel.

      Because I had a manual trigger set to a very high voltage that is only met when I snap the throttle. Manual trigger is the key. Watch my picoscope basics videos (part 1 and 2) I cover this in there and it doesn't matter if you have a pico. It is universal scope stuff. Thanks!

    That's a neat scope. When I use my pico scope and I scroll back through the 32 frames from a captured coil waveform, some of the frames look great with a burn time showing relatively flat and a nice nose at the end, but other frames show the burn time sloping upward or sloping downward. Should all 32 frames of a capture show good characteristics or is it normal for some of them to show good and some of them to show not so good? Another example, on one of my tested coils, I've got 31 frames showing the burn line and 1 of the frames showing no burn line at all. I'm assuming that's a problem but I'm confused as to why I see so many good frames and then 1 bad frame on the same coil capture.

      normal characteristics of secondary waveforms my friend, but when you see no burn line on one frame, is that coupled with a misfire you can feel? Then I would believe it. If it is NOT misfiring, your most likely getting a poor signal with your pickup at times

    Big fan first of all .... Is it possible to have a compression problem if motor runs flawless for 5-10 minutes and then goes left ... Idle seems steady on dial but big stumble felt in wheel at stop lights ( especially if it's a long light to wait. ) Power is 50% gone .. Puff puff out exhaust pipe ... Dash lights flicker but no changes under load (ac ,etc) crazy but car runs perfect cold ... I have no cats only straight pipes and tried to unplug o2 and ran worse ?? Could a faulty o2 rob all that power even at wot ? You would swear it still had clogged cats but I removed them ( shattered guts inside). I assume rich condition maybe killed o2 then killed my cats ? Would poor compression show up only warm temps ? That's all I'm super worried about , anything else like sensor related would be better news. Thanks

      Also, are you absolutely positive that when you mash the pedal all the way to the floor that it does not improve. If you answer is no, then I agree, no reason to look at the O2 any further for this issue.
      Have you considered a faulty alternator diode? I have a video on this called "alternator diode testing".
      As a test, unplug the alternator (smaller connector, not bat wire) after it starts acting up and see if it improves

      because we are packing air into the cylinder which increases compression pressures and makes it harder for the spark to jump the air gap. So it is a stress test in a way
