How to record audio on any drone. It's simple. You need a microphone (this can be a DJI Mic, a Rode Wireless GO, or even a phone with a LAV mic) and a drone, clap your hands for the sync point, and that's it. Now place your clapped hands at the point you hear your clap, which is usually a spike in the audio, and boom, you have audio on ANY drone, or ANY camera for that matter. It's simple, it's fast and it's how it's been done since the stone ages.

The sound of them props spinning was like the intro to a dance tune.
Well, there’s a drone video idea if I ever heard one!! Enough of this “how to” crap and let’s make some music 🤘🏻
That ending is priceless! Thanks for always sharing brilliant tips. Gotta have more fun with the Mini 3 Pro!
Nice simple trick. I was an audio engineer for many years and we often used something like this (many things actually!) for later joining of audio tracks to video or film. This is why the good old clapper board still exists to this day! Later film and audio technicians can pull together the two channels in post. I actually think that a Mini 3 is now so quiet that with a hyper cardioid microphone positioned a little ahead of the forward motors and with active noise cancelling you would get quite a usable sound source but I imagine that would pop it over4 250g very quickly!
Yep, by far the best and tested method. I usually clap myself in on all my dual camera videos, as I don't carry my clapper boards with me. Over 250g, yes, though the drone Police are a myth, right?
I've learned of the clap trick recently and I can attest how effective this is! Thanks for sharing still!
It's the oldest trick in the book and always works, thanks!
Your Daughter is just Adorable!
Thank you so much for sharing and thanks for the great videos!!
👍🏻
Thank You, I agree, she's wonderful.
Wow what a wonderful little daughter you have Phil! She was the star of your clip! The tip was awesome and will certainly come in very handy for future videos! Thanks for that! 👍🇪🇺🦉😎
Thanks Rogar!! She is amazing, I love it when she appears in my videos, it means I'll have some fun memories to rewatch when I'm older.
Thanks Philip. Been trying to learn how to do this with my Mini2. Makes it easier to do this now.
I'm glad I could help out Tim!
So good man - your delivery of info is so good
Thank You!
Aw, your daughter is so beautiful! ❤️
She is amazing, thank you Aimee!
So cool, little pup pings a smile and you can straight away see who Daddy is.
She is wonderful, time flies so fast though!

Your daughter is such a cutie! Thanks for the clapping tip to sync your audio! Found your channel from your comments on peter lingerings channel. He’s one of my favorite creators
Thank You!! She is a sweetie. Pete is great, superb creator, awesome friend.
Great Video and Excellent Information. Thank You Phillip.
Thanks Doug, as always!

Thank You Dave!
Fantastic tip - thanks!
You're welcome Jeff!
Awesome video thanks for the great tips!
Thanks!
Nice video 🤩 , liked & subscribed, thanks for sharing ‼️
Thanks, and welcome to the channel!
Thanks, I did wonder and you have given me some ideas 🙂
You're welcome John!
Daughter is adorable :) Still shocked how quiet the Mini 3 Pro is O_o I honestly thought this was going to be more of an audio tutorial with moving drone footage but most of that is through tricks in post processing using foley work, sound effects, or recordings from the environment you're flying in. Was half expecting a dangling mic from the drone far enough from the props to capture local sound lol.
hahaha, nah, this is just a simple clap and snap. So many people have no idea how to record audio and clap it to sync, I got so many messages and questions, I thought making a quick video would be my best bet of peace. Mia is wonderful, she is my light.
@@PhillipSkraba My only child and daughter just graduated and is about to turn 18 and go off to college to be a dentist. I'm sure you cherish every waking moment with her :) The clap & snap has been around awhile but it still shocks me how many people don't know about it. Simple and accurate :D
18, damn, I'll be 56 when my daughter will turn 18, I guess it'll be here in the blink of an eye. I do cherish every single moment with her, she is amazing, of course there are tough moments, as she's going through some four year old rebellion, her six month brother has stolen attention and she has a hard time keeping calm due to that. It'll get better by the time I'm 70 I'm sure! I'm surprised how many people don't know what a clapper board is for too, but I guess if you've never been interested in filmmaking it's never been a priority to learn such things.
I have a mini 2 and mini 3 pro…. The mini 3 pro is extremely quiet compared to the mini 2. I was shocked
@@PhillipSkraba so synching separately with a separate mic is the only way right?
Mavic Pro can record audio from the smartphone/tablet microphone on the cached video!
So if you want you can add that audio that is around you....to the HD video that is stored on the SD card that had no audio!
Great feature that DJI dropped from later drones!
I dont know why!
yes!!! I used to fly the first mavic pro and always recorded audio that way. I recently bought the mavic mini 3 pro and was disappointed to find out it can't record audio directly to the phone or tablet
@@AndresArosemena You can add a microphone to the RC controller and add audio to a screen recording. It's not as good as it used to be but it does work. Use the USB-C slot next to the storage card slot to plug in the mic.
@@KayakFishingAddict thanks for the reply but I don't have the controller with a screen, I don't think it has a storage card slot. I use the top usb-c connection to get the video feed on my tablet / phone. There is a bottom usb-c connection, can that record with a mic and insert that audio into the tablet?
ty for sharing Phil. your lil one is so beautiful. thumbs up bud Well done thumbs up.
Thank You! Yes, she's a sweetie!
Wow i like your id its better then me saying hey that clap will be seen better.... thank you
It's a good old way of doing it, never fails.
Great video but I am wondering where the audio is stored? I have an SD in my RC and one in the Mini3 of course. I expected audio on the sd from the RC but cannot locate any? Thanks for the help!
Great!!! Good tip!! 👍🏻
Thanks Juan!
Your ideas always stand out. I dont know if you've already done content with the DJI mic, but how about a DJI mic x Mini 3 tutorial?
Thank You! Well, it's really simple, I will be dropping a DJI Mic tutorial pretty soon.
Any ways I can get the audio synced from dji mic 2s onto the drone videos without clapping? I make tennis videos and prefer to combine multiple short clips VS having one giant clip.
The idea sounds good but may not be so pratical. The main problem is that the video records no sound at all, so it relies on the visual clapping for MANUALLY sync-ing. This is not so practical as the sync-ing is not going to be that accurate, not like that done by editing software automatically if the video recorded SOME sound.
Question: can the Dji App be persuaded to record some sound through the 3.5mm aux if available?
OMG!!! She’s cuter than homemade shoes. You are truly blessed. Salut
She so is Richard! I love her to bits!
Very cool and knowledgeable videos, keep on going, you deserve at least 1m subs, Mia is so cute)
Thank You! Mia is the cutest ever 🥰
Czy dobrze zrozumiałem ze klaszcze w rękę aby pozniej dzwięk przesunąć do widoku jak klaszcze? Obraz z drona jest nagrywany na pamieć w dronie a dzwięk na kontroler na kartę pamoęci ?
drone incrivel
Did I miss something, how did you connect your wireless microphone from your controller?
I used it as a stand-alone microphone, no connecting needed.
I still want to be able to record audio from the RC controller. There is talk it works with the host port and usb microphone using the screen recorder but I can't get it to work. I wonder if the latest firmware has stopped it 🤔
That’s interesting, I’ll give that a try Philip 👌🏻
@@PhillipSkraba Yeah see if you can get it working. This guy did it but doesn't work for me ☹️ czcams.com/video/dU4r-VT5wAk/video.html
I have tried it with a Lavalier Microphone and an usb-C adapter, but it didn't record any audio. I am also waitung for someone finding a solution or a DJI software update..
Nice content sir, and what camera did you use aside the drone?, nice quality
Thank You! The Sony A73 🔥
Great tip , i didn't know how to do this and It was fun seeing Mia wondering what you were doing. What camera did you use in the garden? I really liked the image quality 👍
That little sweetie pie, it's funny, when I clapped at the end she did too, I think she'll be a great filmmaker! I always have the Sony a7R3 with me on trips as it's a great video camera and has a ton of punch in the photo dep.
Thanks that helps! Daughter is beautiful! :)
That she is, thank You!
DJI SPARK CONTROLLER ALLOWED AUDIO RECORDING, and mixing it in with canned music. Why can’t this be done with MINI 3 pro?
Well, I'm not sure DJI felt the need to spend money on microphones for each controller, though it would be cool for me, as then I could talk straight into the remote. I guess it's just either not feasible or too few people are interested in such an option.
What’s the lapel mic you’re using? I dont see it on your list of equipment.
I don't really use one Ricky, I only use the DJI Mic without a lav.
The old ones are the best Phillip, you can also use the beep from the video record, or from the screen record notification. Great tip!
Yes, the old ones are by far the best, I've always used claps, even back in the day when we'd forgotten our clapper board.
the beep doesn't give you a visual sync point. Is this correct?
I’m refusing to be pulled into this trick question.
Does DJI mini 3 pro drone has a mic? Or is the video just no sound? I just got mine and the video has no sound despite mute is not on.
Trust me, you wouldn't want a drone to have a microphone installed, that would be a horrible, horrible sound.
Even in modern days, with timecode synced between camera and audio hardware, and digislates existing, the slate clap is generally still in use, because it's simple, effective, practically foolproof, ensures you have both an audio and video cue on what slate and take you are on (as the clapper/loader will say it out load, and it's written on the slate), and also, it's a clear mark for anyone on set to focus on recording the take.
And as a sound engineer, I must add it shuts people up. There's too much yapping between takes.
Yep, it's no doubt the best way, 100% foolproof.
This is amazing thanks man! What are your top tips to minimize the audio picking up the sound of the drone's props? Thanks friend! -Jason
Thanks Jason! Well, keep as far away from the drone as possible and keep the mic as close to your mouth as possible.
@@PhillipSkraba Awesome dude, I can't wait to try this out. The mini 3 pro makes it possible because it's so unusually quiet! I wonder what the frequency (hz) is of the prop noise and if a 80hz lo cut filter might help? Two other things I can think of and curious to know your thoughts. What about lowering the gain on your audio recording device? And lastly, maybe there is a software to further drown out the prop noise? I'll give it a go!
@@JasonActualization To be honest with you Jason, I'm a cinematographer and quite green when it comes to sound, I know the basics, but to me, it's black magic. Generally speaking though, in 99% of my shots I can't hear the drone at all. My eyes are a lot better than my ears 🤘🏻
@@PhillipSkraba haha I appreciate the honesty, but you could have fooled me! The sound is 10/10 my friend, thanks again!
Can a drone be used like a cameraman to follow a person closely while talking? Im planing to use a drone while doing home tours? There is little to no information available if it is possible. Most videos only show how far the drone can go.
If you're outside, sure, inside, maybe, but I think it would have trouble and you might risk breaking something. As you can see I can stand pretty close to the DJI Mini 3 Pro and you can barely hear it, the close the mic to your mouth the better. I did a tracking video with the Mini 3 Pro, check it out, you'll see how it tracks and how close it can be.
@@PhillipSkraba Thank you I'm going to look for that video. Thank you.
Not really helping me, I am a drone pilot who needs to be able to hear people that the drone is interacting with, I get that the props would make it hard to hear but if the drone is perched then that isnt a problem. anyone mount mics on their mavic? I have a 3T drone with the loudspeaker.
What kind of mic was that you were using please
It is the DJI Mic.
@@PhillipSkraba okay thanks
I recently purchased the mini 3
I’ll try and find a mic thanks
So I have a really serious question. So I'm not really sure if it's supposed to be like this or not but for some reason I'm not able to zoom in while I'm recording. Is this normal or is there something wrong..
You mean, digitally zoom into the image? I don't really zoom on the Mini a it's not an optical zoom.
I'm talking as ur flying and recording it won't let me zoom in. Cuz the mini 3 has two wheels on the controller now so I thought u could zoom in while recording but it only seems to work when ur taking photos
I understand the concept of "clapping" to sync your audio, but you do not mention where your audio is being (or should be) recorded. For instance, I own a lav mic, and a DJI mini 3 drone, but you need to connect the lav mic to something (there is an output jack in the mics), and the lav mic output obviously cannot be connected to the SanDisk in the drone. So where should my audio be recorded (where is the sound wave stored?) so that I can eventually sync it to the video? And if the audio sound file is to be recorded on a second camera (anchored to a tripod), then that setup prevents the tracking, "talking" shot I would like to achieve. For example, let's say I want to be riding an electric scooter and want the drone to track with me... and I want to talk while the drone is tracking me... how can I record the audio, and store the file so that the audio stays with me?
His was done with the main camera....the one that was behind the drone filming them both. You'd need an audio recorder, and/or a second camera to achieve the same thing in your scenario.
Your daughter is so cute! I have a 1 year old myself.
She is super cute! My 1 year old Oskar, he's cute but he's a little tornado in the house!
Wonder how many Darrens and Gareths are gonna copy this?!
Great tip about tha clap btw.
You do know knowledge shared is wisdom lost?!
haha, those Darrens of the world, huh. Knowledge shared is the best way we evolve, mind you, it won't help some 😂
🤝🤟🏼😎
Jesus 🤘🏻
Whats the name of the mic your talking on?
Thanks for the video! Will def be using this
I'm not fully grasping this concept. Can you further explain.
The sound of the clap is matched with the frame of the clap, boom, it’s synced.
@@PhillipSkraba I got it now...you have taught me a great deal
Thumbs up for Mia. :) 🎉
Mia is amazing 🥰
Why don’t drones have an internal microphone receiver So that you can speak through a Microphone and it then syncs with the video footage ?
I guess that's because that would be extra expense most people wouldn't use, and would rather not pay for.
@@PhillipSkraba I would use it as it would save time when editing.
fimi or hubsan made a big drone like this....
Its niche within a niche market.... doesn't sell super well
Fimi and Hubsan don’t sell well, not in the professional community anyway.
Super. Teraz powiedz mi jaka aplikacje uzywasz do nagrywania audio?
Dzieki!!! Swietnie ze cora rozumie po polsku. Moje niebardzo :(

Your daughter is so cute ♥️🤗
Thanks! She’s wonderful!
Good info. Cute daughter!
Thank You, and Thank YOU!
Pretty little one, teach her how to fly drones so she keeps an eye on daddy.
She's amazing!
Your lovely daughter is the focus of the video instead of the drone.
haha, it's true, she totally stole my fame!
how the hell your mic is not capturing drones sound....weird lol
Your daughter melted my heart. Now I want a daughter, not this drone hobby nonsense.
haha damn right 🤜🏻🤛🏻
How about how to REALLY begin? How to connect the mike? What buttons to push to get the recording to start? Where the audiovisual files are stored, in the drone, or in the controller? Pretty well no one, including DJI explains any of this, except for those whose simple solution is to pay hundreds of dollars for a DJI wireless mike. It takes A LOT more work, aggravation and wasted time, simply trying to find well-thought-out instructions than it does learning how to actually fly properly. Oh, you want to know how to record audio, do you? Oh, it's so simple, "just clap your hands", sheesh.
.... and it was then I learned.... that our boi Philip is far from being English...
haha, born in London, lived 24 years in London, then moved to Poland, but yeah, my blood is basically Polish.
Misleading title
Really? How so?
@@PhillipSkraba well it implies that you’re recording the audio on the drone, not on another separate device
Well, sure, you can do that it you stick your mic on your drone. I’ve done that before, it’s not a pleasant sound, and pretty much useless audio.
@@PhillipSkraba sure, but thats not my point
@@Akshay-cj3hq Sure, but that's my point.
What wireless mic are you using? Can you provide a link so I can purchase also please? How do you link it to the drone?
