This video is a comparison of a dip belt vs weight vest for the purpose of weighted calisthenics exercises. Adding additional weight to calisthenics is extremely helpful for introducing measurable progressive overload, so it's something I definitely recommend doing. I've had a dip belt, also known as weighted belt, for the last 10 years or more (since I was an avid weight lifter). Then, after I abandoned the gym and found calisthenics, I saw a lot of people promoting a weighted vest for adding weight so I bought one of those too.
To keep the video short and sweet I decided to share my top 3 pros and cons of both of these pieces of weighted calisthenics equipment so you can make the right decision for your investment. Hopefully you find the video helpful.

Weight vests also cut into your upper traps and require a wash every now and then.
Dip belt chains can sometimes “bite” into the fabric of your t-shirts and make little holes. It can also pinch your skin when you are not careful.

Right now I use a weighted blanket and backpack or weighted blanket and a leather belt to strap it to me. A weighted blanket is 15 lbs. I think I will get a second weighted blanket and then strap it as well to me for 30 lbs. The advantage of a weighted blanket is the weight is distributed all over the place even more so than a vest and you can sleep with it.

When you say leg weights, do you mean ankle weights? Those are best for kick backs, side leg raises and other exercises to target glutes and hip abductors. For the standard leg exercise (squats, lunges and their many variations) I’ve found a weight vest works great if you don’t have dumbbells. You still have to go sorta high rep, but the extra resistance makes for a grueling workout and helps build mass. Hope that helps!

You can do deep push ups with dip belt if u use an elevated surface ;) gotta get creative. Dip belt is far superior if you're in advanced calisthenics as it's uncomfortable af to wear a 100+ pound weighted vest and also really expensive.

I think I'm just going to squeeze my legs together to hold a dumbbell between them while doing pull ups. It'll create some serious strength and be a real challenge just holding the dumbbell that way and it'll add the extra weight I need to progress to one arm pull ups.

The biggest disadvantage is the weight you must carry to the gym. With a belt, you use the weights already at the gym. Maybe for training at home a vest would be ok.

I guess but calisthenics is meant to avoid gyms so it's kind of irrelevant since you can juat weight train with the machines there and max out on every muscle

I'd also add that a disadvantage for belts is that when you put on weights over 20 pounds it's not healthy for your spine. The position the belt sits and the forces pulling on your spine are just not good

Another con of dip belts is the it can place so much pressure on the low back if you use it for high weights. Really fucked up my back today with just 65 lbs on the belt.
