Royal Spartan can now concentrate the fight worries of protecting the general
In reality Spartans lost morale at their leaders death. Look at their wars against the thebans
@@victorkumps6846 in reality spartans fight over dead Leonidas, claiming back his body for over 6 times. In reality, as well, we know only 2 or 3 major spartans defeats (in land battles) and they rule over Greece for over 3 centuries. Keep in mind that spartans had defeated thebans many many times
@@petrosb52 I know they were the best Greece had to offer. But they never recovered from their defeats at Leuctra and Mantinea against Epaminondas. That prepared the ground for Macedonia to take over Greece a few years later. And at Leuctra for sure we know that the Spartan king and his elite ´ s death in battle caused the reste of the spartan troops ( elite and otherwise) to leave the battleground as a direct consequence. That’s all I was saying, I don’t dispute that they had the best hoplites for centuries
Battle starts.
Spartans: slowly advance.
Praetorians: assassinate their general.
Praetorians: sorry, force of habit.
😈👍
More like their emperor
lol
This is one of the more interesting fights I've seen! Looking at their stats at the beginning, I genuinely didn't know who would win. Definitely proof that both of these units are crazy tough though
Yeah, they were fighting to the last man...😈
i watched a video where the pretorens got charged from the back yet they didn't even break which is very bad honestly
When the Spartan Strategos died, the men fight even harder to ensure the recovery of their general's body!
Only a spartan who dies in battle gets a grave stone. They cheered for their strategos, to be so lucky.
"Why did I leave my nice home" Hit me hard, poor guy

The leadership stats in this game are crazy. Any other game and the losers would rout a lot sooner once they know they are losing the match
👍
The Hoplite Wall helps a lot in this fight, not because of the Shield Defense Increase but the hidden +5 Bonus vs Infantry
Bonuses increase Melee attack and Weapon Damage and in the case of Weapon damage it's considered as AP, so the Royal Spartan 22 Base and 8 AP become 22 Base and 13 AP, making the Minimal damage they can do is 13 Damage when the Praetorian Armor Roll is 22+ with the Roll being 0 to 50(even though in the Stat box it's 90, it's actually 50 Body Armor and 40 shield Armor).
While the Praetorian only have 34 Base and 5 AP, which means the minimum damage they can do is 5 Damage when the Royal Spartan Armor Roll is 34+ with the roll being 0 to 60(Same with how the Stat Box isn't giving the bigger Picture, Royal Spartans have 60 Body Armor and 45 Shield Armor).
👍👍👍
I like your funny words magic man
base damage from melee attacks rolls against the combined armour value of shields and body armour, not just the body (base) armour, yes it's unrealistic, but that's how Rome 2 mechanics work. so the 34 base damage of the elite gladius that the Praetorians deal is rolled against the 105 armour of the Royal Spartans. same goes for missiles, once a missile passes the shield, its base damage still rolls against the combined armour value of both shield's and body armour. impact damage from incoming cavalry is also considered as base damage and it can be reduced by the armour of a unit.
After the anti spaghetti update, the 5 bonus was removed, most likely because a smaller contact point favours hoplites even more. The more the units get fatigued and the more their attack value drops, and the more their bonus comes into play.
You must be a really boring person mister ashina
should turn off formation attack when attacking. it limits the number of troops getting into combat
If you are defensive then turn it on.
No really, if you are on the defensive, in a 1x1, also turn it off! Leave it on if you need to buy time for your archers or hammer and anvil tactics, on 1x1 turn it off.
@@Falcon0BR Not on Multiplayer, you dont have that time, and without phalanx royal dont win it.
@@legiox4750 there are several tests here on CZcams, the same unit loses on a mirror match with formation attack, the only reason to formation attack is to make the unit die slower, but it loses too much attack for it, so, always turn it off on balanced matches.

Well, if he charge the Royal Spartan in and after10 secs, put them in HW and click another attack order, Praetorian may not like that
@@scorpiontdalpha9799 Don't forget to turn off Formation attack, it forces the unit to reform into a tight block, causing men to get caught out.

I actually enjoyed rome 2, despite what everyone says about it.
Pre-ordered it, game didn't run on 1.0 and after two weeks I could play it, but first versions upgrading your farms was worst them leaving it lvl 1! Game needed several pass after making sense, and now, it doesn't make sense to me, or it is no civil war, or it is civil war everytime!
Me too! My favorite Total War game.
I'm assuming you didn't buy it day 1 when there were a lot of problems with it, like imagine field battle with a cap zone that you can move
it's not a bad game but needed a lot of patches to become better and with a few mods it one fo the best historical TW out there
@@Gdsryrox Agree with you. I didn't buy the game when it was released but I usually heard that there were many bugs, glitches and problems at the first stage of the game.
I had it a half year later, had still a lot of bugs and glitches. But I still love it. And now I play only with Divide et Impera. Because I love the mod.
Can i request? If yes, this is my request:
Galatian royal guard vs hellenic royal guard
You're welcome bro, feel free to suggest me your matchups.
Are u a dum dum? Sword unit vs Pike unit
Sweet, fond memories of my Spartan Campaign. Now off topic, how about Shimazu Heavy Gunners vs. Date Bulletproof Samurai.
Good matchup bro! I'll do soon.
very interesting duel that blows my mind, best of the best fighting each other, but i genuinely thought that sword always beats spears, maybe on higher difficulties it's a bit different
No, it is because of the extreme defense and armor of the royal spartans. Defense does not get reduced when the unit becomes tired. So they can hold against the roman attacks, while the roman attacks get weaker.
Sword beat Spears. But nothing beats spartana
@@zexfafa2794 ayup, there is a difference in training from birth versus training since yer old enough join the legion.
@@SolusLupi eh the Spartans during the Roman Period werent that powerful.
However: Rome always had trouble fighting the Phalanx since the spear has more reach than the gladius. In this case the unit of Praetorians would have kept the heavier javelin as a fighting spear to try and negate the disadvantage
@@jarlnils435 it was their HW that help them win, because it gives 5 bonus vs infantry.
at the center panel u can see ur faction the second tab on the right canmake huge difference cuz it makes the unit to stay in formation !!!
this really fight really depends on the situation
for example, spartans wothout the shieldwall and praetorians with the whip at the right moment can make the romans win
oathsworn for example are another unit that can win a fight by using the abilities at the right moment. Also it depends by the usage of the javelins that oathsworns and the romans have
another example: if you leave your unit at the mercy of a charge of Tracian Nobles, no matter how strong the unit is, it will be destroyed without you being able to do anything
if I have to say a unit that is stronger than the others ... I think it depends on the versatility ... in 1 vs 1 the strongest I think are the Tracian Nobles, but that is not the way to see what it is the best
Probably overall for all the things they can do and all the situations they can solve, I think the strongest are either the Oathsworn or the Praetorian Guards. Mostly because they have javelins that are really useful in many situations
The most OP unit of the game taking into account the price (cost-effective) are certainly the Evocati Cohort. Try them, they are OP
Thanks for the useful information. I'll try.
@@TotalWar1vs1 :)
I also like Agema Spears. Really cheap for an elite unit, plus they've Expert Charge Defense and Square Formation. But an awesome 80 range for their javelins, only Iberian Swords and Thureos Spears have a similar range amongst infantry units. Besides, you can directly aim to certain units whereas other infantries fire at will only or to the unit they're charging.
But yeah, Evocati is probably the best cost effective unit in the game.
Concerning the best unit, Sword Masters are also a powerhouse, and Pretorians are in my opinion slightly worse than that unit and Oathsworns.
@@alejandrop.s.3942 ur right. the problem is that in rome 2, the melee attack is the most important stat, and spear unit mostly have it low... this is why eastren spearmens are the worst unit :(
@@DeltaLightTSFH Yes, but you don't win battles by infantry alone. I mean, playing as Hellenics you have a nice cavalry (Successors and Epirus) and missile roster, which can destroy their counterparts and attack your enemy engaged with your infantry. I think hoplites are a nice, useful unit which can hold its ground when they're properly used and supported, even though the game is clearly sword bias.
Even though elite hoplites have expert charge defense, I think it normally pays off to make them charge, given their nice shock bonus.
Besides, aside from phalanx pikemen, every unit performs better with formation attack off.
I'll upload a video comparing Formation attack ON vs OFF soon.
Spartans :- Our general has fallen .
Gotta retrieve his body .
😈
I feel like the fight would have gone differently if you had turned the formation attack options off for both units
Yeah, I'll try it again.
Nah, they remove out of formation hoplites wall a while ago.
Now HWall will just make Roman unit surround and debuff Royal Spartans
Ngl that thumbnail looks so cool!
Thank you!
I think this would’ve been different if use the whip hadn’t been applied to Roman unit at all. It caused and exhausted status LONG before they would’ve been there. So an exhausted praetorian was fighting “active” royal spartans for a while there. If you noticed, praetorians held a solid 10-15 model lead until then.
Something that's been missed here is in Total War whichever unit is spread out wider has a huge advantage. Spartans would have won easily if they had been spread out to the same width as the Romans.
Their Hoplite Wall made them get in tight formation.
@@TotalWar1vs1 ahhh okay
No they wouldn’t. Their hoplite wall formation is what helped them most to win. So if you spread them, they would probably lose, definitely not won easily. Thats bulllshit
@@TotalWar1vs1if u would took them out of formation attack they would have been more spread while still bein in the phalanx
@@jordancheesebourough ok I'll try
Formation dif gave you the advantage forced them to fight stretched and causing them to have less combat units in the battle. Prae always mercs. Seiges always good to have a few in the back or to take the front assault cuz they can dif take out 2 to 3 full units vs them. Cost effectiveness. However no urbans sad.
Reminds me of a mp battle i had against rome with sparta and I won by mostly managing to outflank the roman infantry one by one until i had the advantage

I'll test formation ON vs formation OFF soon.
Just turn it on upon first contact, very likely to win that way.

Anybody notice the 4 Roman’s not fighting on the side?? 3:27 I think it would’ve changed the outcome without a doubt.
Yeah, because the AI used Formation Attack.
Maybe naked warriors vs longsword cohort as both are anti infantry units? (To use units from 2 different DLC you need to save army, change dlc and load army. You can even edit later so you need just 1 unit to save and transfer between dlc)

We can move slowly the unit in phalanx, but not a charge.
@@TotalWar1vs1 oh so it works as a spear wall rather than shield wall

Hoplite wall gives u 5 attack bonus vs infantry
Best way to use hoplites (especially those with high charge bonus like Spartans and Armored Desert Hoplites) is to charge them in a standard formation first. then once the charge bonus effect seems to end (can usually tell by a slowing in the killing) put the hoplites into Hoplite wall
Why is there almost a quater of the roman units standing still on the right ? They could have flank them and win right ?
Stupid Formation Attack was on. That's why I play with a mod called Formation Attack off, since that way you don't have the upper hand against AI when you deactivate it.

Hoplites don't have enough credit, but they're an awesome asset. They can take pretty well the precursor damage due to their superior armour, can hold in combat against better swords, bonus against infantry when Hoplite Wall + bonus vs cavalry. If you use a cycle charge strategy in order to take advantage of their nice shock value (having a second line and withdrawing the first line when they start to get tired or suffer losses) you can make them a force to be reckoned with.
Only the fact that they don't have precursors is crippling, but as long as you keep them away from units with high AP such as Thracians and Shotels they will perform well. Not brilliant, but a nice well - around unit which performs well in many situations.
honestly while playing as sparta in grand campaing I recruited only Spartan hoplites and preety much won every battle, especialy since they start with additional experience which is important in the series, in terms of battle all you have to do is set them in line shield wall On and marche through the map

It's one of the problems with these games. The Hastati are worse than the trariarii (im sure I've massacred those spellings) when you have to think the hastati must of been bloodied veterens by the end of a campaign whilst the Triariaii probably got fat on food and wine.
@@lindagoad2163 well you had to be good to get into the triarri while the histati were like the 19 year olds just out of basic
@@thehappy15a no that's completely wrong. The early roman legions were based on wealth not experience. The Hastati were the poorer soldier who could only get the basic armour, principles moderately wealthy and Triarii wealth older citizens who could afford the best armour. The Velites essentially had no money and could get no armour, generally only having wooden shields and Javelins.
@@thehappy15a the Hastati formed the front line. And were generally so successful that the 2nd and 3rd line barely got a look in. The Triarii were the rich republicans sons and family who were probably well trained, but unless the campaign wasn't going very well would barely of seen combat. There's even a saying basically equating to "send in the triarii" roughly meaning "fight to the bitter end".
The RTW hoplite spear was too long (the pike was the right length for that). They wanted to fix it in RTW2 and it's... too short. From one extreme to the other.
In addition, the falga fights like regular spearmen, only using an overhead spear thrusts from time to time. The entire first line should fight like this, supported by a second line that lands horizontal spear thrusts.
In RTW, the falaga, regardless of the region of origin, fought like a Macedonian Stygmata. But at least it was justified. A significant part of the campaign is the Hellenistic times, dominated by such a way of fighting the phalanx (they naturally resembled Macedonian units). Here, they're more Barbarian Invasion spearmen style of fighting than Spartan hoplites.

Well try it without special actions like Shield wall and use the whip. While the spartans ability is way big help, bcs it considerably increase the stats. The Romans advantage of attack did almost nothing, killed one soldier and use the whip after a while totally exhausts the Romans and then they fight like a shit. So you put them in a significant disadvantage. The ability should be use at the very end not in the middle. And still dont understands how spartans can have better armor than Romans
Okay bro!
The Pretorians Could Have Won But Some Of Them Just Stopped Engaging While The Spartans Were All Still Attacking.
