Tincup Pass Trail Guide with Cherokee and Renegade Trailhawks! Trail Damage!

- Tincup Pass Video Trail Guide and Review featuring a stock Jeep Renegade, two KL Cherokee Trailhawks, and a stock Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. Tincup Pass is near Buena Vista, Colorado and can be started from either St. Elmo, CO or Tincup, CO. The trail is rated as Difficult due a few rough sections, but only reaches a 6 if you take Old Tincup, the original more vertical route to the top. I’d definitely recommend skid plates, rock rails, good tires, and have a true a 4wd system in your vehicle. Disconnecting the sway bar and airing down will make the trip more enjoyable for most.

My name is Dewie Jones and I’ve been messing with Jeeps since I was younger. I’ve daily driven a wrangler my entire driving life starting with a 1997 TJ and now I’m in 2012 JK. I like the challenge of driving a stock wrangler on tough trails. My buds are not new to wheeling either, but for their own specific reasons, now wheel aggressive SUV based off-roaders like KL Cherokees, 4Runners, and Renegades. We decided Colorado Mallcrawlers was a funny name so we changed the channel’s name (plus the old name was hard to search for). - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Ok, I’m enjoying all your comments including the critical ones, however, I need to clarify some things. You need to own what you say and I will not accept ones being disrespectful towards anyone in my videos. By disrespectful, I mean calling someone a moron or an idiot. Being critical of someone’s driving is ok, but let’s put this all in context. Mike was new, but he just wanted to prove his vehicle could keep up as he got quite a bit of hate prior to even going off-road (From some in a local Jeep FB group). Now, Sean, Zach, and I told him numerous times to take it easy, but it’s also his vehicle and we’re not going to force someone to drive our way. Also I didn’t see all of his wheeling till editing and I can guarantee neither did the others so we really didn’t get the same picture y’all got from this video. Did he wheel recklessly? Yes. Did he get home safely? Also yes. Was he with a crew that wasn’t going to abandon him or anyone else? Absolutely. This is the deal, I do not want any vehicles damaged during these trail guides especially like this (it is a pain in the ass to get a disabled vehicle off-trail), but it is possible (I mean we’re dropping vehicles off ledges and big rocks, what do you expect?). I do not and will not push anyone to take a hard line for video purposes. These videos are designed to get people into off-roading (and show Colorado). Breaking vehicles is an easy way to get people to say nope so our goal is get through a trail safely and hopefully still be entertaining. Recently I stopped one of my buddies on wheeler lake’s the flopper. Could he have done it? Absolutely. Did I know how to spot him SAFELY on it? No.
So, I appreciate all of you for watching these, for subscribing, and definitely for commenting. I realize most of the comments are good natured even if critical so keep it up and yes, I do reflect upon the insight given. This just needed to be said based on some comments being posted.
Yeah, it was a hard lesson to learn, but, he learned and is better as a result! I get annoyed by it because it’s usually from wrangler owners who think they need 37s to actually wheel hard stuff. They’re dumb tho 😉
I love the videos you guys post. I know which FB group you're referring to, happened to me too. I just got a 2020 KL Trailhawk. It's still stock but I'm planning on doing some mods to it in the future. I've only done a few easier/moderate trails so far but I'm always looking for others that I can handle.

I love your videos, I have a Renegade stock as well and I was able to to this trail no problem, since its a easy trail, Mike was just pushing the jeep to hard.
Renegades are good cars for off-road and they can handle probably as much as a wrangler, if you take the big rocks out.

It’s maybe just the times... this was published when we were in lockdown I believe (but filmed prior to it). A stock renegade can do tincup, but I do want people to use this video as a reminder to not wheel alone.

Yeah, there’s a backstory to this that I should have done better at explaining. He was bullied for owning a renegade in a FB Jeep group.
Loved this video! I grew up riding up Tincup Pass with my grandparents numerous times in an old stock CJ5 as a kid. I'm 36 now, and I, nor my grandparents, have been up Tincup in 23 years. They're in their early 80's now, and my brother and I are loading them, our wives, and kids up in our gen2 raptors and going to take them up for 1 last hooray this July so that they can share the same memories I have and love with their great grandkids. We are all stoked!
I am highly impressed with that Renegade. I knew it would do new Tincup with no problem, but that is impressive for it to handle the original trail. Looks like ya'll had a good time!

Holy crap 😂 That Renegade can take some punishment! I actually was thinking of buying one and wondered what those little cars are capable of... Recently did a trail with similar difficulty to this one here in south africa withmy stock Renegade trailhawk as well. He got to slow it down and really pick your lines properly. The Renegade just keeps impressing me though. Been able to keep up with much larger vehicles. A vehicle that you don't have in the states thats massively impressive offroad and even smaller than a Renegade is the Suzuki Jimny. Those things are unstoppable
Definitely and the Jimny is really cool… many of us here wish we could one. I love my wrangler, but if the Jimny was option, I’d try to pick one up as a second vehicle.
I took my GX470 up Tin Cup when it was bone stock. Had to choose lines carefully and got asked if we were lost or told to turn around many times. Props to Mike for having the balls to bring his Renegade up there. Although a bit naive, the guys gusto must be respected!

Yeah, stuff happens and we have to learn from our experiences. Ok, now I have to go to all of my Renegade groups and find this guy. What was he thinking? You said he’s new to the trails but has he ever driven a car at all before?? He was going “Full Send” the entire time. I’d never trail with a guy like that. It’s reckless and puts everyone in danger. Learn buddy and learn quickly.
Maria F yes he was, but it wouldn’t be right to force to someone to drive their Jeep our way in my opinion. I’ll think about it tho. Still, we talked to him throughout with suggested changes. Definitely in the plans! Maybe not this summer, but our 2022 plans are pretty wild! My buddy and I are going to attempt some truly tough trails in our stock wrangler rubicon and bronco badlands. Plus we want to hit some trails we’ve been meaning to film for a while with the entire crew. I’m excited to get at it!

I really felt this one, and enjoyed your pure honesty in what was happening and why. Great editing too and really appreciate that you take the time to make these videos. I own about three nice gopros but I barely manage to take the time to take any video clips, and even once I've taken the clips its like pulling teeth for me to sit down and edit them. I know its a long tedious process, so thanks for doing that.
We've only been to Colorado once just a couple months back and we did a lot of great hiking but we were too shy to risk our brand new 2020 Cherokee and didn't really know where a good spot to go would even be. Now I've discovered your videos and taking notes for ideas for our next trip out there. Your guides are really helpful and I appreciate that you don't sugarcoat things or edit down to only the sunshine and rainbows parts. You are showing us some real wheeling, great places to do it, and giving us the info we need to decide which trails we are comfortable tackling. Thank you.
I really appreciate your comment. I try to provide reality as I don’t want to ever mislead people especially since we present these in a more informative format than a general trail video. Editing is a love/hate relationship for me, but I think it’s going to be a mostly love once I figure out what I’m doing (learning shortcuts, a bigger color accurate monitor, better workflows). I am noticing that I might be getting better at it, but I still hope to get much better.
The Cherokee is incredibly capable, and I love watching it in action. We hope these only improve so you and others can continue to count on accurate trail info. That at least is our goal. Anyway, thanks for watching and we appreciate that you’re here!

"this isn't the way to the mall" -that renegade
Maybe it's just me but when I was new to off-roading I didn't go slamming into things. I may have good special awareness, but it looked like that Renegade driver did not know the height or space around theirs very well. Glad everything turned out allright, but make it an important rule to learn where your wheel placement is, height clearance, and proper speed for the conditions.
He got harassed like you did in that FB group, but without your wheeling experience. That pushed him to prove the renegade was a little beast like it was in my slaughterhouse video. He just didn’t realize that wheeling requires restraint and that you can’t just bash through a trail.
@@coloradomallcrawlers Sometimes it pays to have a more robust vehicle to handle your driving skill. While the Renegade is not a pick on my list for tough vehicles, I have watched many videos showing their ability, and they hold their own on many tails. I have seen the Trailhawk could use with a lower "low" range for tougher/steeper trails. Wishful thinking that they put the better gearing in the lower models in the future so it is just as capable as the rest.
Just some free advice, not trying to tell anyone what to do. On my offroading and even my on road vehicles that have that cheap plastic cladding down low, I pop it off and replace it with truck bed liner. If you want to learn how to weld, some custom rock sliders are a great start. If not even renegade rock sliders can be ordered on line. Thanks, just a couple of thoughts.

I like when you talk about the trail. How to get to the trail, the elevation of the trail, the difficulty of the trail, the scenery, names of mountains, famous spots, types of trees, the weather of the time of year you on the trail, everyone in your group and the Jeep models everyone has. Never change that. You have great communication skills, keep up the good work.

Good details. Also noticed no one was aired down. Would have helped with traction climbing and down hill on rocks. And you can manually disconnect sway bars with a few wrenches.
The Cherokees were aired down. My philosophy is to air down as needed. A trail like this shouldn’t require airing down besides old tincup. Thanks for watching!
Nice! Been down that trail many times. Accidentally got on Old Tincup once and had to turn around. We like to do the 3 passes in one loop - Tincup Pass, Cumberland Pass, and Hancock Pass.

At he beginning of this Video, watching that neon orange Renegade, I was LMAO thinking "oh...this is gunna be good!" But Damn! That scrawny little thing with the golf cart tires kicked butt!! Had the dude been a little less reckless (as in slow down) he would have made it out just fine! Just goes to show ya that you don't necessarily need a 9" lift kit with 37" tires!🤣

Driving critiques aside I enjoyed seeing what the renegade is capable of. I own a Deserthawk and am new to off roading. It’s nice to see that they’re more than capable. It’s my daily driver and would like to take it out on some easy trails around my neck of the woods to start out and it gives me some perspective to the capabilities. Thanks for the video!

Well, I agree. We tried at times to get him to go more cautiously, but I’m also not one to tell a person how to wheel their vehicle. I think he learned a valuable lesson though. Yeah, definitely!

I’ve got to jump in here, and I’m sharing this to share is all. I get what you are saying Dewie, I do and I’ve been there. I have grown over the years to speak up, and I/we know in our group that it is a mutual thing. If you see something, say something. I’ve said before “If I’m doing something that doesn’t look, feel or smell right, speak up!” The last thing I want is a rig on its side, broken parts or somebody hurt with people mumbling, “I knew that was going to happen” or “I saw your wheel twisted that way and I thought you were going to break something”. I don’t have an issue telling somebody what I think they should be doing. Crawl it slower, don’t bump it so hard, try this line and ease into it. We tell those things to each other so that the whole group can have a great day and avoid or minimize breaks on the trail. Anyways, that’s enough. Just sharing my thoughts. Great video
Colorado4x4 I respect that and it’s definitely something I’ll consider in the future. However, everyone seems to be forgetting I didn’t see a lot of this till I started editing. I’m also not very comfortable telling another person how to drive their vehicle. I will say stuff like if it was my renegade I wouldn’t do that or I wouldn’t take a suv based 4x4 on that line. We also did encourage being easier on the Renegade multiple times and by the point I said “he says it’s a trail rig” we had said to go easier a lot. Zach also went on the non-old tincup route and I was pushing everyone but me to stay off of it since it was an unknown. This channel is not about breaking rides especially for most of us, we daily these vehicles. I also do NOT pressure anyone into taking a harder line or the same line as me. With that said, we got him off the trail without any assistance from others. Zach was a lifesaver to Mike. So personally, I like criticism, but it’s difficult to criticize this as the only people inconvenienced by this, was us. We also did a service to others by showing how much abuse a renegade can take. Finally, any day, any build, you could be the one that breaks.
First of all, I love your videos. One of my more favorite channels. Keep up the good work!
I came here to harp on the Renegade driver, but it seems others have done that job for me. I cringed a lot while watching him.
One suggestion for the videos: when showing a car's specs, why not freeze-frame for a few seconds while the car is passing so we can read the specs without missing any action? You could make the overlay more prominent, too. Sometimes I don't notice them at all until the second (or third) viewing.

electric sway bar disconnect is awesome but nothing beats good old Manuel disconnect just simply pull the pin

We ran Tin Cup/Napoleon/Hancock last week (8/11) in our RZR. The guy at the St Elmo store said a bear (nicknamed "two-tags") has been tearing up St Elmo. I rigged a tree lift for our food at our campsite and we had no problems.
WorkFromHomeFriday yeah, it was the group next to us that left their stuff open and brought the bears. A open CJ7 definitely had a bear inside it. I’m not too worried about bears, but mountain lions are a different story. I’ve seen some at work that are just massive!

Yeah, the biggest I’ve seen is this one near somerset co. We’re about 15ft in the air in a locomotive and this cat was 20-30ft ahead of us on the tracks. It’s whole butt filled the width of the tracks. I thought it was an escaped African lion 😂

Yeah, he was, in the end everything worked out, but I’m hoping he’ll come back and run this again with us (but from the tincup side) and show everyone how much in control he is now.
Very enjoyable video. I was surprised at just how capable the Renegade was. I have generally considered them to only be a half-sibling in the Jeep family. That it was left on trail was much more to do with some overly enthusiastic driving than a shortcoming of the vehicle.
This is one aspect of this guy’s videos that I enjoy the most; seeing different models of 4x4’s and AWD’s compared in the trail environment. I am especially interested in seeing how “Cherokee-class” CUV’s perform on the trail. It’s surprising how good the electronically-controlled 4x4 systems have become, and from what I’ve observed, Jeep’s is about the best.

To put it carefully, perhaps the Renegade driver lacks a bit on wheel placement and throttle control... But wow... what a tough little machine. Going beserk mode nearly all the time crushing rocks instead of out manouvering them -- I thought it would quit much much earlier!

Do y'all think a Subaru Outback Wilderness (9.5 in clearance) could make it to the 3.75 mi mark starting from St. Elmo? That would be right about at the start of the curve north if looking at the map. The Colorado trail intersects this road there, and I'd like to resupply some folks who are thru-hiking the trail this summer.

I sometimes wish for lower gearing in my 2015 Renegade Trailhawk, but then I think about all of the places my father went in his '86 Bronco II Eddie Bauer with automatic trans that got a similar "twenty point something to one" crawl ratio from a 2.42 first gear, a 2.42 low range reduction, and 3.42:1 final drives. It took that to do what my Renegade Trailhawk does with a 4.8:1 first gear and 4.33 :1 final drives.
And, my father took that Bronco II places that would have passengers needing spatulas to pry their puckered butts off his eighties velour upholstery, too.
Having the 2:1 torque multiplication from the torque converter made his "B2" feel and act like it was lower geared than it was. Same deal for me in my Renegade.
So, when I decided to buy, I wasn't worried too much about how the Renegade got 20:1 and I figured the 2:1 torque multiplication from the torque converter wasn't factored in, as it generally never is.
What I was more concerned about was fully independent suspension. In reality, on trails like this one in this video, it doesn't suck nearly as much as I feared it would.
Mine's stock except for 225 section BFG KO2's on the factory wheels. Future mods include cross bars for the roof rails and a factory or factory-type receiver hitch. And that's it.
I'll let the vehicle's 8.9" of ground clearance, 30 degree approach, 25 degree breakover, and 32 degree departure angle be the "fuse" preventing me from taking it where it shouldn't go, and therefore helping prevent me from breaking anything important or expensive.
But I'd do Tin Cup Pass in it without hesitation if I could do it with a friend in another vehicle. I won't be driving mine "full send" like the guy in this video drives his, though. ;)
Please advise what mode the Renegade was in for the trail. My 2015 Renegade Trailhawk in Rock mode with the descent control on does not lurch ahead like that. I have had several other Jeeps in the past. Its a very different feeling keeping the power on and letting the system brake wheels as it sees fit to send power where it will move the vehicle ahead. Im from the east, very different terrain on ME, NH, and VT logging roads and woods. Glacial rocks and logs, mud and hills slick with logging slash and snow.

I wouldn't want to buy that Renegade used :). But, great storytelling and awesome shots. I've ran that trail several times in a stock Liberty, it definitely takes careful tire placement and patience. Do you guys ever do meet ups?
😂 yeah! Thank you! We try to get a wide variety of vehicles in the trail guides if feasible. The biggest issue is scheduling as we all have weird schedules, especially me. We are hoping to do some overland type adventures in the future which will be less trail guide (we’ll still shoot those mostly though) but more adventure. I’m not a very good vlogger tho so I’m not sure how to do that yet. I think we tried on wheeler lake so I might play around with the footage to see if I can make something decent. However, that’s my idea on getting more people in the videos... figure we can have a big group and just go adventuring. Thank you for watching!

Just think way back in the 50's, one could drive a 1950 4 door Ford over Tin Cup pass. Once I found the new Tin Cup I never returned to the washed out Old Tin Cup.
I heard Tin Cup was cleaned up a bunch after we filmed this video. It’s just the normal cycle of mountain trails dealing with snow runoff and enthusiast use.

I'm really surprised this trail is rated harder than Mosquito. Tincup is out favorite trail, but I dont plan on ever going over mosquito again.
Interesting, what happened on mosquito pass? Trails do change based on various factors. For instance I heard they smoothed out tincup since we shot this. I found mosquito rather easy tho, but if you start it via birdseye gulch, it’s much harder.
@@coloradomallcrawlers Mosquito had just opened 2 days prior and there was a lot of snow-melt running down the shelf roads. The switchbacks were washed out which left the boulders way more exposed. My 92YJ is a standard so I didnt have much choice than to just keep pounding over them without stopping and pray nothing broke.
@@coloradomallcrawlers same trip, Deer lake on Tincup trail was about 3 or more feet high. Had just enough lift and tire to keep only the bottom of the floor pan in the water

I have seen pickups on this for sure. The only thing is I’d make sure the pickup is tough so I’d have some skid plates and rock rails. However, you could do this trail without those by being careful with your line choices.

Mark Jackson I think you’d be ok. Just drive a bit more cautiously than Mike. Go with another also. The biggest concern is the descent at the top, but I believe the renegade’s low range should keep you in control. Have fun!
just a tip, reverse gear is your weak link, never pull someone out in reverse, good way to damage your stuff. Renegade was due to be broken, pushed it a lil to roughly id say.

Ya given the situation we were in, there was no way I could turn around cuz there was no room to do so. And i didn't have to pull very hard. That said maybe gift me the money for a steel bumper I want, and I can put my new warn 10000 lb winch on now, and then that wouldn't have been any issue to the jeeping community 😉

@@coloradomallcrawlers I did Imogene and Engineer this past August and one of my main phobias was breaking something and having to be rescued and hauled down the mountain. Not only ruins your day, but everyone else's day on the trail due to clogging up the works.
Yeah, it’s a pain and one reason I try to wheel with people I know and trust now. Still, even the most built vehicle can break on the trail so it’s just part of off-roading.

It www so stock it even had street tires on it. We at least got him to air down a tiny bit which I think helped him a little bit keep from puncturing a tire. But we did it , cautiously. Just from 40 to 30 psi. I don't know that the tires could have handled more than that

We did it at the beginning of summer... the trail had just been cleared, but we were hoping the lake would have been higher.
Are both cherokees lifted?
collin hutcheson grey is 2in, black is 3in. Later videos, grey gets the 3in. He will talk about his reasons and build in a future video if there’s interest for it.

We did that trail many years ago in my wife's Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ. The Jeep did fine but she decided no more rough trails for her.

I was a bit surprised that you rated this difficult, but it has been at least 10 years since I last drove it, so maybe the trail has deteriorated, as I don't remember it as being particularly difficult.
Oops thought this was for Aldrich Lakes. Funtreks and trailsoffroad rated it as difficult. I agree with them. Old tincup increases the difficulty, but the top has some pretty eroded sections. It’s no Holy Cross or even Wheeler Lake, but you should have a decent enough off-roader. Thanks for watching!

It seems everyone driving Willy Nilly in this video. The Renegade driver looks like he was driving to destroy the thing. Not sure people should look at this as a guide in anyway other than what not to do.
The renegade driver was new, the rest of us have a solid track record of getting through trails without issue. In 20 years of off-roading, I’ve never had to be recovered. However, I’d love to take a lesson from you to improve my skill set… Let’s set it up!
