  • Middle St. Vrain and Coney Flats Trail is a difficult trail near Boulder, CO featuring a Stock Jeep Wrangler JK Rubicon, a lifted Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, and a lifted Jeep Wrangler JK Rubicon. This one has deep water crossings, lots of rocks, and some awesome low altitude scenery. This is the trail that resulted in this channel's creation and we will review it as well giving all the info you need to figure out if you want to do it. We use Funtreks and TrailsOffroad as reference materials and use stock off-roading vehicles to determine trail difficulty.

    Channel Info:
    My name is Dewie Jones and I’m the reluctant host, videographer, and video editor for the channel. I’ve daily driven a wrangler my entire driving life starting with a 1997 TJ and now I’m in a nine year old 2012 JK. I like the challenge of driving a stock wrangler on tough trails. My buds are not new to wheeling either, but for their own specific reasons, now wheel aggressive SUV based off-roaders like KL Cherokees, 4Runners, Land Cruisers, VW Touregs, and Renegades. We decided Colorado Mallcrawlers was a funny name so that's how we got here.
    For trail planning, I use the Funtreks Books (amazon search: Funtreks books). I have the current editions of the Colorado books and Moab. I finish up my trail planning with trails offroad as they can sometimes have more detail as well as user submitted current conditions feedback. I’m testing GPS apps and currently don’t use one. Here’s my video that tells you how I do it. • Find off-road trails t...

    For any newbie watching this and not knowing what "hydrolocking" is or the cause of it. It's important to note that on water crossings, if your air intake goes under water, it can take out your engine. Best thing to do is pop your hood and see where your air intake is and how high or low it is so you can gauge how deep the safe zone for water crossings are. If not, be prepared to buy a motor.✌🤙

    • @coloradomallcrawlers
      @coloradomallcrawlers  Před 2 lety

      Good point, however the intake is just one of the pieces. You want to make sure your breathing tubes are extended as well as your electronics locations. I generally stick to the manufacturer’s water fording limits to keep a warranty intact (30in on a wrangler JL, 20in on a pre-JL wrangler). The air intake is much higher up than the limit usually and you’d likely be ok, but if you care about your warranty, be careful to stay under that water fording number.

    • @jamesakemon4115
      @jamesakemon4115 Před rokem

      Those fording numbers are based on the body air intake vents. One way vent, but it has been know to fail.

    So you said that pulling a trailer is possible. I have a 5x8 utility converted to a camper so you think it could make it to the campground.

    • @coloradomallcrawlers
      @coloradomallcrawlers  Před 3 lety

      Well, I’d pull my camper on it, but it’s up to you to decide for yours. I would not pull my camper on wheeler lake as it would be nearly impossible on obstacle 2. Here, there is no major obstacles to get hung up on so I would do it once I’ve waterproofed it. My camper only weighs 1700lbs (and will go on a diet soon), has a max coupler, and my Jeep pulls it well. I don’t have time to do my own repairs even if I wanted to, but I like having a qualified mechanic do it. My replacement clutch was bad from the factory, since a certified shop did the replacement, I had no problems getting the clutch replaced again and now it’s 100%. Thanks for watching!

      Ya I don't use mine all the time but I know when I see an obstacle If it's one I should be using it on. I don't like to tear a trail up and I don't like drama when I climb cuz I think bouncing around increases my risk to break stuff , but mostly I'm using it if I know I'm gonna be lifting a wheel a lot or be off camber a lot on a climb because its a lot more controlled. I think Zach used his a lot less than I do , but I definitely do use it. I paid for it I'm using it

      There really are not any bypasses on this trail. Easier lines are possible though. Just have underbody protection and rock rails and you’ll be fine!

    How does that 3 inch lift affect the gaz mileage on that Cherokee ? And does it fragilize the other components ?

    • @coloradomallcrawlers
      @coloradomallcrawlers  Před rokem +1

      It decreases gas mileage and affect’s durability of the KL Cherokee. I’ve convinced Sean (grey Cherokee KL) to discuss his issues in a future video. We’ll film it when camping.

      @@coloradomallcrawlers i just bought a Cherokee traihawk 2016 and was just wondering about all these issues I find that the 3.2 lacks a bit of torq since its soo heavy. Haven't tried it off road just yet. Did alot of deep snow with it and its really Good i find. Had to lock the back a feww times and wow does it help !

      I also noted that it's quite thirsty gaz wise Maybe that engin isn't strong enough or the gearing isnt perfect.

      😂, filmed long ago, I upgraded after Wheeler Lake as I had to work too hard on obstacle 2. I’m on those Kendas I did a review on I still love them! Did some non-Moab rock crawling at 38psi without slipping so I’m definitely sold on them.

    Bro I appreciate your huzzpah but in that stock jeep one of these days you're going to get stuck on a trail and it's gonna cost you lots of money

      I’ve been wheeling a stock Jeep for the last ten years on trails worse than this. This is one I use to do numerous times a season. The Rubicon is built better than my built TJ was. Thanks for watching!
