The Reconquista: Every Year

  • In the early Eighth Century, the Umayyad Caliphate began an invasion of Christian Iberia. Although losing control half a century later, their legacy would spark a conflict to last almost 800 years, to decide the peninsula's future as either an Islamic or Christian state. With the destruction of the last Islamic Kingdom in Iberia, Granada, the Reconquista is complete. Three of the remaining Christian kingdoms, Castile, Navarre, and Aragon would unite shortly after to form Spain, and ultimately the Spanish Empire.

    why are Medieval movies so focused on England and France? The Moors and Spaniards fought each other for hundreds of years there's bond to be some good movie material right there.

      Better yet they should probably make a show about "El Cid", Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar. He was a badass knight who fought on both sides and won most of his battles. I'm sure it will very successful and fit nicely with other medieval themed shows like Game of Thrones and Vikings. But seriously look up his biography and you'll know what I mean.

      Lee Grant typically the Moors where not actually that brutal towards Christians, however the Spanish were towards the Moors when reclaiming Southern Spain, slaughtering many. That's why France and England are always the focus, it doesn't show "French" crusaders doing bad things, but bad people becoming Crusaders. So in comparison French and English focused movies put crusaders in a bad light, while the slaughter of many Muslims by the Spanish would cast all Spaniards of the time in a bad light.

      solwen It happened on both sides, Christians were brutal to Muslims in Spain, but not vise versa. Muslims were brutal to Christians and Jews in the Balkans and Middle East after the Golden Age of Islam. Even before the Muslims were brutal in taking the Christian states in Anatolia and Palestine before the era shown in Kingdom of Heaven.
      Regardless of religion, every religion has blood on their hands and each is attempting to retaliate for offenses that took place hundreds of years ago.

      David Bourland Perhaps my message was unclear. I just said that a modern movie about the Reconquista would be plagued by modern political correctness. Such a movie would feature myths and modern propaganda like the "Al Andalus: paradise of multiculturalism and tolerance" vs "bigoted Christians" like in Kingdom of Heaven where Christians were pictured as bloodthirsty and treacherous while the muslim are all noble and peaceful.
      History is history and it must not be reshaped to fit the trendy political views.
      And you can be sure that if a realistic movie about the Reconquista was made, an uproar of activists and professional indignants would occur as the only thing they would see are "Whites killing browns" and "racism"

  • @rattfink99
    @rattfink99 Před 3 lety +1716

    there's essencially two reasons as to why the moorish invasion was so quick and easy:
    1 - the visigoths didn't allow the roman-iberian populations they were ruling to own weapons and form militias, in hopes to stop any sort of revolt
    2 - the visigothic kingdom was in a sort of civil war and a visigothic lord from gibraltar literally asked the moors for help, and they decided to help a little too much

      @MMadesen Před 3 lety +204

      To add to the second point. The new Visigothic king was betrayed and abandoned by his own visigothic nobles during the decisive battle, leading to a westgothic defeat. The arabs then went on to defeat the westgothic nobles one by one, aside from Asturias, which they assaulted, but coudnt defeat.

Christendom dies - and is resurrected - in ways similar to Christ. He was rejected and crucified in Jerusalem, and so too were the crusader states disbanded, and the crusaders martyred. However, this rejection actually created a Christendom stronger and larger than ever before. The crusader's blood has paved the way for Christendom to cover all humanity.

      Its hard to imagine,but maybe troops from the iberian kingdoms could have indeed played a Big role in the crusades
      They were used to the tactics the muslim used,and were experts at skirmishes and fighting with light armor,the castilians even developed their own Calvary force,the Jinetes,inspired in the andalusian raiders who were quick,agile,and experts at rough terrain,with a breed of horses that suited that style
      Its hard to think what wouldve happened,but the iberian fighting style couldve given the crusader knights from France/England/Germany the versatility they needed,to not get out maneuvered each single time

      Better question why do you Portuguese always get so hurt? No one can compliment Spain without that one guy from Portugal complaining what about me? Maybe because a lot of people realise that Portugal and Spain are the same shit. Portugal was founded by a Galician who broke away from the Kingdom of Galicia, claimed some land and declared him King of Portugal. It was literal sibling infighting and rivalry that founded Portugal. The only difference between Portugal and the other Kingdoms of Iberia is at the end of the Reconquista, the other kingdoms united after 700 years of fighting along side each other, generation after generation, to form the Nation of Spain, except for Portugal.

      +Ollie Bye (History) it is wrong right in the beginning: The moors invaded Northern Portugal, but they didnt government it, it was not part of any government, as it had a feudal structure that was able to resist. In late 9th century, the county of Portucale was formed in 868 in the Northern banks of the Douro River, all North of that river was already Christian. And you show this region as being part of the Caliphate. The county became more powerful since the 10th century and we can speak of Portugal in this period, as powerful county in Western Iberia to such an extent that Garcia who gained Galicia in the 1065 partition and after fighting the Portuguese count in 1071, called himself King of Portugal and Galicia, not the other way, you know... Northern Portugal was always Gallaecia (Galicia), but Portugal took hold, as it was the early base of a county, small a first, but grow larger and quite fast. People give to much credit to the first king of Portugal. It may make sense for southern Portugal, it does not for Northern Portuguese.

    • @OllieBye
      @OllieBye  Před 8 lety +2

      Pedro4490 No, they governed northern Portugal. It was the lands north of it (Galicia) they didn't effectively control. And the county that was created in 868 was just a region of various Christian kingdoms, it wasn't its own state back then.
