A different angle

  • With the end of the season fast approaching I realised that I haven't used my Gopro remote all that much. Here is a short session on the Dartmoor stream with the camera either balanced on a rock or on the bank just to give a different view of the stream. Unfortunately the fish refused to cooperate and I had the distinct feeling that the fishing would have been better during the day instead of last light. It is the middle of September after all. The camera struggled a bit doing a low light zoom but hey, this stuff is free!!

    Most enjoyable Chris, once again.
    A shame it's getting to the end of another season but do try and fit another video in before that happens.
    I find watching them very therapeutic as I can watch you getting wound up when you miss a fish rather than it happening to me!

      Glad to be of service, Mike 🤣
      I think an unforseen benefit of having the camera so far away is that the microphone can't pick up the expletives 👍
      I think on that small stream, you'd be doing well to connect with one rise in four. On a "bad" day, it could be 1 in 6! So if you manage to land 10 fish, you had 60 rises!! I try not to think about it like that.

    Hi Chris, I think the concept and benefit of placing you go-pro at an angle to the pool your about to fish was best demonstrated at 3min. 25secs when you could clearly see a trout rise at your fly. It's that moment of anticipation. surprise. and a tad of disappointment when it fails to take...all rolled into one. That for me was the best shot of the session. Hopefully next season you can experiment again. Yet another enjoyable, shared experience.Thanks.

      Hi Peter, I was really hoping this season to hit one of those now rare days when the flies are hatching, fish are rising, and the fishing is easy. The plan was to get the camera close to a rising fish and watch it take the natural and then my artificial. It appears this will have to wait for next season now. Nobody wants it to be easy for every trip, but once would be nice.

    Another great video Chris, I’ve recently discovered your channel as I am going to start doing some small stream fishing up in Derbyshire next year.
    That one fish reminded me of the black finned trout you get in a couple of Welsh Llyn’s

    Well done Chris lovely video, wish I could catch trout but all we have had rising since May is grayling and it seems to be the case in many areas but time to look ahead to next year. If your stream was by me I would be up there with a tent for a week at a time. ATB Mike

      Funny you should say that Mike, the trip before this one there was a whole family camping by the river. I didn't see any fishing rods though.
      The heavens have opened here today so it's going to be a while before the rivers are fishable. Let's hope were not flooded off for the last bit of the season.

    Another excellent video Chris. What I think is really good for people to see is the kind of stealth and rivercraft that you need to succeed on these tiny fast flowing and often overgrown streams. It is very far from easy fishing!

    • @chrismatthewsflyfishing7724
      @chrismatthewsflyfishing7724  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Cheers, Johnny. I think the most important lesson I had as a kid fishing these streams was to try and keep out of sight as much as humanly possible. This advice has stood me in good stead over the years, and I'm sure your approach would mirror mine. Sometimes, of course, in a really good rise or at dusk or in coloured water, you can get away with it, but it's best to practice good habits.

    • @DaviekFlyFishing
      @DaviekFlyFishing Před 9 měsíci

      I agree John, some people think you just throw the fly in and catch a fish, often that's the case. I would probably tempt a few more with a bit more stealth though!

      @DaviekFlyFishing Před 9 měsíci +1

      Chris, you must be near the top of the league for catching with your last cast! Great stuff and some really dark trout as you pointed out.

      That's the beauty and the curse of this river fishing isn't it Davie? You always think maybe the next pool or the next or perhaps around the next corner. Not unusual to have 100 last casts 🤣

    Its a pity the fish didnt seem to like the different angle approach, I thought it was super and very nicely and imaginetivly different. A lovely way to round the season off there with that last cast good fish , well done!
    Thanks for making the efforts again with the video work.

      Greetings Fred, I'm sure I speak for a lot of people when I say that I've missed your videos this year. Commiserations on such a lousy season. We fly fishers are nothing if not eternal optimists, so perhaps next year will be better?
      The remote is for the gopro 10 (might be different for the 7 ). Really helps with battery life as you can get everything set up and then start and stop the camera as you like. It's much better than having the camera recording for 20 minutes for 2 minutes of footage. 👍

      Yes, the editing can take a bit of getting used to. Which program are you using? Definitely don't bank on making any money from it, so far it's cost me an arm and a leg in terms of camera gear! Thankfully, I just enjoy doing them. 👍

      @@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 Thanks for replying. I am making it purely for fun, family and friends and anybody else whose interested. I am using an App called Video Up and a Go Pro 11. I am based in Switzerland but do most of my river fishing in Austria and Germany. In Bayern, the rivers are mostly chalk streams. The fish are tricky and not really free rising. The Mayfly hatches are spectacular. Like you I mostly fish Dryfly and occasionally up steam nymph. I cannot stand Euro Nymphing; no casting and akin to trotting a worm. More skill in trotting a worm!

    • @chrismatthewsflyfishing7724
      @chrismatthewsflyfishing7724  Před 9 měsíci +1

      @conor1004 I dabble with the euro nymphing lark but tend not to take it very seriously. I'm sure for the competition guys, it's a must technique, but angling should be about the enjoyment it brings you. It is why we go after all. Your rivers certainly look nice, and it was great to see you getting the youngsters involved. I tried with all three of my daughters, but none of them stuck with it.
      I'm using shotcut for my videos. It has a proxy file function so that my laptop can handle the editing.

      Very interesting Chris, I’ve been using a Maxcatch Gold for 3 seasons which now needs to be replaced. Is that about it’s expected life. I have been wondering about Barrio small stream line but happy continue if you also recommend.

    • @chrismatthewsflyfishing7724
      @chrismatthewsflyfishing7724  Před 8 měsíci

      I used to use a Barrio smallstream, and they were excellent. I believe the original manufacturer had a fire or something, and they're now made elsewhere. I haven't tried the new one, so I couldn't really comment.
      I think three years is pretty good for that price of line. They do take a bit of a pounding on these small streams, and I change mine the moment I see any damage. As with everything in this game, I would go for what you fancy and ignore the "experts." The idea of paying £100 for a line and then leaving 70% of it on the reel seems mad to me, but I haven't tried one, so perhaps I'm missing out?

  • @59TOBE

    Does it really matter what size they are as long as you're catching them

    • @chrismatthewsflyfishing7724
      @chrismatthewsflyfishing7724  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Not to me William, I've fished this stream for 20 years and never had a fish over 12" but have loved every minute of it. I had a comment on one of my videos asking if I ever get bored of catching such small trout? I suppose like everyone it would be nice to have the chance of a 3 or 4 pounder but they just aren't in the rivers I fish (at least not for me). The first video I made here talked about how the presentation, line control, hooking etc are all the same despite the small size of the fish. Infact given the clarity of the stream and the tight casting conditions then perhaps the skill involved is a bit more than some ever venues. It's here if you haven't seen it.
