And this is the image of flyfishing in Britain - stuffy, pompous, middle aged and upperclass - and they wonder why young people are not taking it up????
I do not think this program was designed as part of some recruitment drive to get people into Fly Fishing, the only reason you would watch this wonderful television program is 1) you are already a lover of the sport of fishing or 2) you are a fan of the brilliant Michael Hordern of which, i am glad to say i am both.
What a load of pretentious waffle......trying to be so arty about an obvious thing - why should flyfishing have anything to do with the stone age?? It is very modern and refined, although he acted like a 'savage' the way he attacked that small trout!!
Yeah, they should have thrown Michael onto a lobster fishing vessel with a bunch of degenerate meth heads indebted to their alimony and other egregious financial decisions. That's REAL LIFE right? /s
He also advocated successfully for the restoration of rivers and trout, grayling, salmon that live in them. He and others gave more to nature than he ever took. While he did strike that trout in a rather ungainly fashion,we must remember his age at the time of this film and also other anglers in this series doing much the same.He and his generation were the first to adopt the catch and release ethic and the necessity of defending nature from despoilers.
Wonderful series, very nostalgic based on one of the great books of angling...the music is just magical!
I remember this episode from back in the day. Great to see it again, almost 40 years later! Thanks.
Remembering those days makes me cry.such wonders I Remember.
This is so calming. Should be titled "Badger from Wind in the Willows talks to you about fishing"
If I remember correctly, this is from the early days of Channel 4, when they actually made some quality programmes.
For everyone's enjoyment, ASMR and otherwise, I have created a public play list of all of Horden's Rod and Line episodes.
Thnx
A superb essay, beautifully and sympathetically narrated.
...by a wonderful character actor! Who could ask for more?
Never seen these before, I'm saving these for a Christmas watch.. Not a game angler myself but I've learnt a great deal in two episodes.✌️
I would have loved a day fishing with micheal.even if you didn't catch a thing I bet it would be the best days fishing ever.
Gosh I remember this, Channel 4 used to watch it on a small b&w portable I was 11. I so miss the days on the river. Thank you so much for posting this
Brilliant. Tolkien would have thoroughly approved of Michael Horden's portrayal of Gandalf and his personal philosophy for the natural world.
Thank you so much for uploading these. I could listen to Michael Hordern all day.
Sir Michael Hordern is definitely up there with Alan Bennett and Oliver Postgate as one of the greatest voices of the last century!
He's spot on a Fisherman knows what's going on in his river ,spot on !
Thanks for uploading!
Beautiful

No wonder young people dont like flyfishing
They have no clue.
If he'd been a friend of Vladimir Lenin he'd have probably known that his real surname was Ulianov, not Litvinov.
He was referring to Maxim Litvinov, prominent Russian revolutionary, not Lenin’s surname Ulyanov.

**That's telling him !! Bravo !!**
Well in 1982 it got me - a Scottish teenager from a working class family - into fly fishing so I’d say you’re 100% wrong.
To paraphrase DCI Gene Hunt;
"You make that sound like a bad thing"!
I find it neither stuffy nor pompous
Go Vegan...
For every vegan that days this I est another nice, bloody veal steak

Simmer down, simmer down! Michael Hordern was so gifted that he could read from an old-time telephone directory and make it sound wonderful. ...
Can you deny that there is an atavistic urge in a least part of your fishing?
