  • Today we embark on a mini-series that will show you how to break ground on Mars and get your very first dome setup. But this isn't just ANY dome. This single dome will take your fledgling colony and single-handedly make it almost completely self-sustaining in just 7 trips from Earth and back.
    This playthrough is being played on very hard difficulty settings (325% to be exact) with a map that has all four threats active and present. However, this strategy will work on any map, on any difficulty, with any sponsor and commander profile.
    Today we fill and land our very first rocket and get both our fuel and concrete production going. Domes need copious amounts of concrete and with 7 trips lined up, our one rocket is going to need a lot of fuel.
    Rocket #1's Loadout:
    Moisture Vaporator x2
    Fuel Refinery X2
    Drone Hub x1
    Drones X13
    Polymers X10
    Machine Parts X15
    Electronics X5

    You don't need to build your first drone hub until your first rocket is about to launch. It has a maintenance cost and is surplus while the rocket is still there, as the rocket provides the same functions.

    Water resource site are best when used as an auxiliary to vaporators. You should use vaporators to provide the bulk of your water and the water resources used for filling tanks and aiding tanks during sand storms. If you rely mostly on the water resources you will deplete those resource quickly then find yourself going ah crap where's another.

    For me the Oligarch commander is the way to go for a power start. Basic dome with an arcology spire gives them a really nice boost to starting comfort, and given how small the basic dome is getting 32 residential spaces without using any of your 6 wedges is a really good head start. I pretty much have always gotten a baby before the founder period ends. Needs some extra polymers but those aren't super expensive and the concrete's essentially free.

    A couple of questions.
    1) Since buildings will make a power connection to an adjacent building, is there a particular reason for having all the power buildings connected to a central power line instead of having a field of them connected to each other with only the power line necessary to connect the field to distant (dust producing) buildings; thereby reducing the amount of cable that can develop power leaks requiring maintenance?
    2) The water vaporators, I saw someone else laying them out so that their area of effects over-lapped each other but fell just short of over-lapping the next vaporator. Is there a difference between over-lapping: the next vaporator, area of affects, and no overlap?

    • @goose6752
      @goose6752 Před 6 lety

      I might be wrong about the building to building power connections; thinking back, what I saw may have been a single hex power point rather than a building to building connection. Although I'm sure there was power & pipe flow-through, at least w/ larger buildings like excavators.

    • @Pinstar
      @Pinstar  Před 6 lety +1

      Sharing the border tiles seems to have no effect, but having deeper overlap can be harmful. Buildings will not power eachother. Everything needs to be next to a power cable.

    • @goose6752
      @goose6752 Před 6 lety

      Thank you for the response, I appreciate it.
      I had a thought relevant to over-all strategy. How important is is it to provide housing? I saw an advanced game (400+ sols) where like half the population was homeless (and most jobless) even though most of his domes did little more than provide housing and he had more structures than he could provide maintenance materials for w/o using the tedious money cheat + space elevator option. He had the occasional suicide, but the birth rate far outstripped the death rate. So, for every 2 housing units you left out, could you add an extra block each of work and play units and get away with a completely homeless population since housing only provides comfort to those living in it while other buildings will provide to everybody?

  • @Shattered-Realm
    @Shattered-Realm Před 4 lety +3

    Tips for beating 1000%+ games:
    This dome is nowhere near efficient. The concrete extractor needs to be on the north western edge of the concrete patch to account for the future water extractor otherwise they dust each other. Also You don't need 2 fuel refineries initially. If You built them like them where they are you're not accounting for the future dust generated by water extractor. It's best to build only 1 in between domes (pre plan where your first 2 small domes are going to go) That way you can use only one subsurface heater to heat two domes, the fuel refinery and water tanks/vaporators during a cold wawe. Jam pack refinery water towers and and as many moisture vaporators in that small area between domes for maximum efficiency. Also later on when you get scrubbers you can use only 2 and get maximum coverage on all your buildings since they are jampacked..
    Solar panels and batteries also suck I wouldn't recommend them. A solar panel uses 1 metal maintance cycle to generate 80 power per Sol. 5 per hour for 16 hours. A wind turbine uses only 0.5 machine parts and will generate at minimum 125 power. (5x25) elevation bonuses and polymer blades will see them producing around 9-10 power per hour or 250 in a sol even with a modest elevation bonus. With solar power I find I had to build way more of them and build a crapton of polymer sucking batteries as well. And still the overkill on the batteries (polymer maintance) had to be massive to survive a dust storm. You can never have enough polymers in the early game. But producing them requires population which is hard to come by on last ark rules.
    One final point: A drone hub this early is wasteful The rocket is good enough as a drone hub and will prevent unnecessary electronic maintance.

    • @MarsStarcruiser
      @MarsStarcruiser Před 4 lety

      ShatteredMercury I agree. Use to like solar but mostly after atomic accumulator. Can’t stand the basic battery though. Its also easy to mass up extra power for super conductive computing but does eventually erode your iron pool in sheer maintenance. After having gotten maps with 70+ bonus starting area, as well as frictionless breakthrough recently ended up playing solar free and I will say, especially starting out, wind is surprisingly alot easier.

    • @Shattered-Realm
      @Shattered-Realm Před 4 lety +1

      @@MarsStarcruiser I know I beat this game on 1075% once and probably terraformed the map a dozen times on difficulties between 800-1000%. I tested both and wind is the best way to go until you have nuclear with the breakthrough or stirlings once your swimming in resources. I tend to transition to those late game because you can cram a metric shitton of power around 2 scrubbers. It makes the base more compact and tidier
      I tend to prioritize beelining down physics to get scrubbers ASAP. At least once I've gotten one or 2 comfort techs and I'm fairly certain I won't age out. Depending on the difficulty and where scrubbers are located on the tech tree and random bonuses to physics this happens between Sol 50 and Sol 80 in most of my games.
      I tried solar in my earliest games and it's worse on so many levels. At the critical points (moho reasearched) I didn't have a metal stockpile to convert to machine parts which dragged out building time of moho because I had to open another dome and train geologists to mine metals (time consuming and a waste of human resources cause you want engineers scientists and farmers at that stage of the game). Every storm was a nightmare and whatever engineers I made went into polymer factories rather than stocking up on electronics and machine parts to get the wonders when they are researched. Those polymers also went into battery maintance so my expansion domes and building upgrades were slowed as well.
      The only trick to remember is to micro a bit with the wind turbines. Build enough to survive a cold wave, turn off the excess when it's over, and turn off even more wind turbines when there's a storm so they don't bleed you dry of machine parts while the storm is raging.
      I love this game here's hoping they add another expansion.

    • @MarsStarcruiser
      @MarsStarcruiser Před 4 lety

      ShatteredMercury I never noticed a decrease that much in repair when turning it off but it might be conditional due to disaster. Like cold waves, anything, turned off sky rocket repair I thought, might be opposite for dust...?
      I did notice Low-G turbines did decrease repair need on top of its power bonus after comparing non bonus and bonused group, well worth the polymers as it generally adds 2.5-3 sols to the life of a turbine.
      5 1000+ games so far and never once had geologist except randomly from school near end. Mostly used game developer building for money and most metal sites burned down too fast with or without. Rather have extra engineers burn down extractor sight quick then send them back to factories most of time. Never seem to get “Deep Metal” access soon enough so far in any of my playthroughs to justify geologist ever. I might make a trio next time, 1 per shift depending on how much population.

    • @Shattered-Realm
      @Shattered-Realm Před 4 lety

      @@MarsStarcruiser That's a great tip actually I never noticed polymer blades decreasing repair cost. I'll definitely adjust my early game opening in light of this. Usually my first polymers would go into upgrading vaporators and a playground.
      Turning off anything that consumes machine parts except the critical water extractor if you start next to water definitely is beneficial. You 100% go through many more repair cycles during a dust storm than other wise but the great thing if you go for wind is that it ramps up energy quite dramatically so you can get through a dust storm with roughly 1/3 the wind turbines you need to survive a cold wave. You will have to repair them (the ones shut off) after the dust storm but it will only be one repair cycle vs several across multiple buildings
      I made geologist that game (I was a total noob then) because I literally ran out of metal and need more. As I got better I didn't get them either until green planet came out. The terraforming structures are a massive metal sink and a tier 1 moho or even fully upgraded will take forever to get the metals you need cause most of them will be going straight into machine part factories to upgrade the moho and concrete extractor. You need 2400 machine parts (ie metal) to do both. Then another several thousand for terraforming wonders. And of course mega dome and water farm construction I've found that metal is usually the bottleneck in green planet. Just getting a single metal extractor will help you massively to just get fully terraformed faster.
      As far as Game Developer on 1000% + I don't know how or when to use it. It uses electronic maintance (big deal breaker for me) and with inflation the money you get becomes useless quite rapidly. starting with 12 people I find I *NEED* those warm bodies staffed in the machine part factory or the polymer factory, research lab or services so they keep having children and 100 other priorities. I like to use the SETI satellite for cash in the early game. I import 30 electronics from earth build the satellite which gives me more money than the 30 electronics cost. You need to do it quickly before inflation eats into your profit margin.

    I disagree with your strategy, of not taking Rovers. Especially the transport rover which is essential for early resource gathering and base building. In fact I think that the rovers are actually priority one for faster expansion, instead of building one large base at the beginning you should build couple all small ones just to exploit the surface resources. Later on when you are ready to build your dome you'll have tons on concrete and metals.

    pinstar from what i can tell with out even owning the game and just watching your stuff it seems the concreat diggers work on the tiles them selfs in terms of what they pull up meaning that the total is there IF
    you pull up every single tile that you can from that deposit meaning that the best way to milk them dry is to start from the outside and work your war in meaning that most of them seem to use / need at least 2 or three exstraters to full drain the zone based on what i can tell and gather its the white outline that that pull from leaveing that metal looking undercoating when they are done as the yellowsh mars earth is the conreat it self that they are pulling up
    that shows just how much they have pulled up and such they dont work like the water metal or rare metal deposints they are flat out spread out and such you can always test this but im rather sure im right from what the game tends to show and from what i have gathered from watching your many showings

    Hope there are some useful tips, starting seeing the series now. One main issue when seeing people play this game are to not use math (enough) and plan expansions/placing as good as it can, wasting resources and time. Tip: A prefab drone hub with 6 drones (later 8 if got that tech) is cheaper than 6 drones, 150M vs 180M. So you wasted 90M on 13 drones instead of getting 2 more drone hubs. Also such a drone hub have a mass of 5000, where a drone have mass 1000. So for 390M you could get 3 more drones and 2 prefabs.
    EDIT: A second tip is to NOT place concrete extractors on the best spot. Because then you do not get (almost) all. By placing 2 you could get most of the 450, now you get "only" 300 where rest is in a way "lost" since will probably not build on the tiny spots remaining.
    A third thing is to place down a universal storage right away. Then the drones would have started collecting metals and unloading the rocket, if no constructing to do.

    • @rianbattle
      @rianbattle Před 6 lety

      StyxAnnihilator by getting two more drone hubs, you also have to provide additional power for them and maintenance for the drone hubs themselves, which is more costly in the long run
