Dev here, I just reactivated the demo for a few weeks. Please try suppressing enemies which GIVES you AP. See "how to play." Also each gun is different. Hover for a description. Thank you for your patience w the bugs and WIP UI/UX!
Splat, thank you! Been watching you longer than I've been making this (my first game) so it's a HUGE honor. Glad you put that nasty hack behind you. Wishing you nothing but love from across the Pacific ❤
Fan becomes content that produces more fans. Epic Journey. Splat is Awesome at covering these games.
Really loving the Classic X-com vibe. Not sure what your plan is, but would be cool to see soldiers go up in rank, with bases and vehicles to manage along with equipment for soldiers and new stuff to research. Base defense was awesome in classic xcom, loved designing a base and then later defending it from attack. Either way good luck, game looks neat so far.
Yeah, what Captiiva said. Base building, then later fighting in the base you designed was awesome in the old X-Com.
This game now has my attention, I hope you keep it harsh and gritty, as it looks to be from the demo. Power fantasy is all well and good, but I like fighting my way up as the nothing special underdog in a bad situation.
@@Captiiva Every single one of the things you mentioned are being developed :) And locations retain structural damage b/w battles. Also today I revealed air strikes and vehicles on my Twitter fyi. New trailer soon. Thank you so much Splat nation
This is your first game? Ok Auteur, lol. I hope you have a whole dev team with you one day, unless you prefer the solo route.
This is brilliant
Fallout, fallout tactics, x com, caravaneers, dune (if any of the games were well made)... actually i really wish dune 2 had been like this, tho it was rev for its day. Dune one, with the sietches, politics, and overmap play, could be an interesting source of inspiration for the meta game over squad combat.
Sorry for the rant, this one has me nostalgic, can't believe its your first title! Cant wait to see it completed, or what you do after
Red Faction is such an under appreciated game.
Destroying walls felt like the future was here with gaming, and yet it’s still rarely used
there's a remarkable number of "this is the future" game systems that ended up as white-elephants in the industry.
the spell/melee/bow system from dark messiah, terrain deformation from red faction/bad company, the large scale objective based PvP in battlefield 2142/planetside, game NPC "Ai" that's competent like half-life/fear, combined fps/top-down-strategy gameplay like in hostile-waters/battlezone, pet-control macros on par with city of villains mastermind class (the BEST pet control system ever seen in gaming, control 1-8 pets fully at will using a set of 3 stances, 3 movement behaviors and pet sub-selections).
@@IRMentat Point well made - graphics seems to have been the only real upward curve and I think it's come at the cost of the natural innovation that was part of the earlier industry. Sadly think the Middle Earth Shadow of series mechanic will end up being added to the pile to.
@@SprikSprak with Unreal 5 good graphics are so easy that companies should be able to focus more on good gameplay
@@SprikSprak and I truly hate that the shadow of war mechanics are going to die purely because of a businesses greedy copyright actively preventing anyone from innovating upon it.
@@Inanedata Copyright was a mistake
I love that your videos are scheduled to come up like 10 minutes after I arrive home from work, so I have enough time to change, make something to eat and happily explore yet another indie thing :)
I love when you come home. It's not the same in your walls without you here 💔
damn you're effective. I take more than 10 minutes to decide what I want to eat, much less make it.
@@shrillcrayfish6168 oh you are in his walls too? Crazy that we haven't run into one another.
Splat always waits for him before he releases the video. Then we watch him watch the video and we feel fulfilled.
I really liked this video... but this comment thread was what I needed to break up the night shift. Classy.
The graphics evoke the original X-Com, by MicroProse, while the mechanics are in line with the 2012 remake. It’s an interesting hybrid of influences.
Yeah, want aliens gone? Use those c4 and destroy whole building
Im not sure if someone actually have a computer for those at the moment, but such level of destruction feels amazing for real time in 1997
It looks like some elements out of really old-school X-Com is in there. The inventory, the base-building, the struggle across a strategic map and how you must loot your opponents for gear.
Well it is space miners vs space marines, so the disparity in equipment is probably complimented by a disparity of training too.
I don't understand how there are so many f-ing awesome indie games out there and how you manage to get them played and reviewed so quickly! Incredible! Thank you for your service to indie fans everywhere!
Curiously, we’ve recently discovered that rechargeable battery designs from around 125 years ago are more energy efficient than lithium ion… with the added benefit and not exploding into flames when exposed to water. Such as atmospheric vapor found everywhere on the planet except the most extreme deserts.
The basics of the study showed that while they don’t recharge as fast, the amount of loss each subsequent full charge has compared to the initial charge is negligible when you put it up against a lithium ion battery.
So instead of wearing out after three or four year, it can be recharged over and over for decades.
Added benefit, doesn’t produce carbon monoxide when left on a charger at full power, which I didn’t know lithium batteries did until I saw the study.
I guess my point is the plot is already retrofuturism due to a study released less than a month ago. The world is an amazing place.
…but hey, plot is just a vessel for the gameplay in this case, right? They don’t need an incredible story if they just make it fun enough. Or challenging. ‘Sides if I hadn’t read that it’d seem perfectly plausible.
Games like this always make me think of Viscera Cleanup. Some dude gets to go out there and fix all the bullet holes in the solar panels and stuff...
Wow! This game looks amazing. Love that they added new systems to a genre that seems mostly stagnant in recent years. They camera angle is also pretty cool, and the concept in general looks really promising, can't wait for the full game!
5:02 if you don't go wide on them then they go wide on you and you get flanked, its tactics 101 and they have the high ground and are the defenders giving them that advantage, you have the numerical advantage allowing you to keep them supressed while also flanking them.
Damn, for once I found a game before splattercat! I've been really enjoying playtesting the demo, got like 5 hours in it now lmfao. Good video!
I love a lot of what they're working with here. The directed overwatch system is a nice. When you picked up the enemy rifle, I was thinking "this game needs a system to toss the weapon to friendly forces", and then low and behold, there's a throwing system.
Love the aesthetic too.
And I like that this is the first game I've ever seen splatter play where he's trying to end the video, but he's just so caught up with playing the game he gets caught up with the next play through. Dig it, through and through
Honestly, XCOM but against the very real evil of corporate capitalists instead of the existential terror of alien invaders feels very appropriate for the 2020s.
I love these kind of games. This looks great. can't wait till it gets further developed.
9:10 *roughneck voice* "Better Red than dead!!" *sudden shift to scout leader voice* "so let's see, where was that other guy?"
Give it a us v ussr feel, era "cold war". M16 in 5.56 holds more rounds, flatter trajectory at distance, and the manufacturing standards, and tight tolerances of the weapons, made them more accurate, while also more unreliable in field conditions, and requiring more maintenance. The 7.62x38, which the Kalashnikov launches, smacks like a mule, allowed full auto on standard models, do to a difference in thinking on accuracy vs rnds dwn rng, and would operate fairly reliably even when plucked from wet mud, or sand. The looser design of the weapons platform allows for a sort of "self cleaning" where the propellant shakes, and shocks, away interrupting particles.
Something about this is so fallout 1@2! I would love the main game being developed, but, even more, I'd love a rpg like those, same world, same engine, as a side project. Fallout, or this old flash called "caravaneers" or something, which was like fallout one, if you were just trying to keep a camel alive to hump water to the next trade hub. Little flash game was brilliant, and i think its a sleeper of influence, much like cthulu, in the games of this age
"They need to charge their batteries man."
"Den in used the next-gen batteries."
Well, just in time eh?
Dev here. Good eye! BTW do you like the name Den? Thinking I need to rename it
Definitely early on in production but looks like a game I'd definitely play. One of my favorite turned based tactics games is "Gears Tactics". One of the mechanics I enjoy in that game is that you get 1 overwatch for each remaining AP, so you can hit different enemies who cross your path on the enemies turn.
Didn't think I'd be interested in a game like this, but weirdly, I am!
Looks like a solid little number. Thank you for the effort dev and thanks for putting it on my radar.
I bet this game will be fun once fully realized. 😊

Love how he's using a lot of the good things about phoenix point's combat system (the overwatch style, the 4 ap instead of 2)
I'm so happy you're back Splatt. Sucks what happened to you man. Hope everything works out.
What happened?
@@Truthorfib His CZcams channel was hacked.

@@Truthorfib Splatty got hacked 🙁
@@igorthelight I mean it wasn't just CZcams, it was everything. Discord, Twitch, apparently bank account too. He was dealing with that whole thing for about a week
Using the same password for youtube as for your bank... omg.
Have I ever mentioned how much I love your commentary SCG? You are awesome.
This is everything I want in a game right now. Can't wait for this one
Id love to see cover penetration/degradation be based off of caliber, barrel length, and distance to target
Noted! Thanks for taking an interest
If you have good cover yet you cannot push for an attack, end your turn and let the enemy come to you. They waste their ap and turn chasing you.
Looks VERY ambitious in it's game mechanics. Especially for a small team/single dev.
It will either be great or a crash but worth keeping an eye on.
Try the demo! Let me know your thoughts. I started making this game in my head 25 years ago. All the my fav things from JA2, Xcom, Civ, Silent Storm, etc. Scope creep is my enemy. Well, will give it my best shot.
Imagine doing a soft ball throw with your gun as your last defiant move lol
I wonder how hard it is to code a competent AI. it's probably mind melting building that loop
Dev here. Each enemy scans all nearby tiles. Each tile is rated by cover, line of sight, teamwork opportunities, etc. Then they add extra weights like their aggression, panic, equipment, personality, etc. Then they make a decision.
A big goal was for enemies to run away! That's because each battle is part of a larger inter-connected world. Player and AI squads persist in the strategy layer. When a battle breaks out, nearby squads can dynamically enter/leave combat. So if the enemy feels outgunned during a fight, those troops will try to run away and regroup w others nearby or return to base. You can prevent that by positioning your squads intelligently ahead of time to block escape routes. Or have your squads enter combat as reinforcements from specific directions (N, S, E, W) to give you an edge in the fight. Imagine you're fighting an enemy squad and your boys roll in from the other side. Easy flanks!
In short, engagements can stretch across many locations. My goal is to closely link strategy and tactics. I hope planning ahead will be fun for the player.
@@takibigames Thanks for this answer/comment.
Very interesting take. And also shows a lot of what goes into programming enemy ai, and why a good ai is so hard to program.
The regroup/reinforcement concept sounds very interesting, good luck on that.
Makes you wonder what Xenonauts 2 has been doing all these years. This game has better looking 3D models and smoother ground combat animations!
I really like the vibe of this game. I think perhaps the map could have more on it, but then again it is Mars. But I could see this being really fun with RPG mechanics for your soldiers and some kind of narrative story.
The intro already has me excited for the future. That last few percent of phone charge lasted from feb 6 2032 to dec 10 2036.
edit: And then never dropped for another three years^^
playtester here, but no development is going at a stupid pace it's hard to keep track of it all
Thanks for showcasing! ^^
This looks amazing!
This is one of the more promising games i have beheld. Hope to see it come to fruition.
Terrain looks like cookie surface some sort of. I like that color, pleasant for eyes :D . Gonna watch over this, game play looks promising, unlike thousands other clones. IMO this ones worth a try. And I'm very picky with this genre/play style. Cheers Splat!
Dev here, thanks for the comment. And I hear you on the terrain. End goal is for a more organic look (uneven edges, bumps, more dune patterns, etc). o7
When I saw the video thumbnail, I thought this was some sort of remake of UFO: Enemy Unknown.
Definitely keeping an eye on this
This looks fantastic.
Oh this looks great!
Looks like it has potential; like the look and gameplay I saw. It'll depend on how the other elements of the game fit together.
uhh huh buddy not quoting sun tzu at all , im glad your whispering words of wisdom from the past
The character portraits look like old school Tecmo Superbowl portraits. I dig it.
I'm now in my sixties, Splat - EVERYTHING has a throb to it, nowadays, and not the fun kind!
This looks like great fun
On the title screen, Mars is turning the wrong way. Earth is also turning the wrong way in the intro.
Thanks again ShamblerDK. Will credit you in the patch notes :)
BTW About 100,000 people have watched or played the demo. And you are the first to point it out 👀
This looks dope.
Mars marxist miners seizing the means of production and striking back against their corporate overlords?? Dude that sounds rad as hell... The Red Planet indeed
Thanks for the video.
Ay, you got it sorted! Nice one Splat.
Looking forward to this one.
looks promising. All depends on the AI, 1v1 would be great as others mentioned, but i guess one step at a time.
Not much into TTRPGs, but for some reason this looks interesting. It will depend a lot on what the game is like in between fights. Wishlisted.
@@Days_of_the_Righteous well maybe there'll be strategy in the full game, but the demo is just a TTRPG.

Sir! What Mars Tactics shall we employ in our Mars Attacks!?
Looks cool!
Solidaridad! ✊🏽
No Pasaran!
Hey Karolina vesela/ Carol Happy from Czech Republic that's cool 😁
You're way better at this game than me. Hopefully a bigger tutorial will be in the full game.
Dev here. Tutorial is def a priority. For now, I tweaked the difficulty so it's more fair: the player now gets 1 reinforcement every other enemy wave. And don't forget you gain bonus AP for suppressing enemies. This is the key to winning battles. To suppress shoot at or around enemies. Good luck!
3rd? First time I caught a Vid this early! Looks awesome
Splatty Splatty Splatty.. I am gonna summon a demon unless you return to doing series. DON'T TEST ME!
Games luks super interesting.
Reminds me of the x-com trilogy that started after the apocalypse game
Other than the zoom and looks, what does this actually do differently to all the xcom-likes?
With all those headshots splat got at abysmal chances of even hitting, I wonder how that's calculated.
Dev here. Two unique things: (1) Deeper suppression mechanics. For example, you can gain bonus AP for suppressing. (2) Dynamic reinforcements/escapes. Squads near a battle in the strategy layer will enter combat from their respective directions. Likewise, escaping a battle isn't the end as squads can be chased down back in the strat layer. So positioning/planning isn't limited to one battle but stretches across many engagements. You have to think ahead.
As for targeting, everything on the map has its own hit box and bullets travel in a physical space. So you'll get plenty of stray/lucky shuts. You can also shoot anywhere, not just at enemies. Balancing it all will be key. Thanks for your interest!
I stumbled on some of comrade's videos and I can tell he's knowledgeable on socialism by his jokes, which are pretty funny BTW.
God bless Julian Gollop.

See some elements from the good old "AOW: Planetfall" battles.

Love the XCOM vibe but the graphics seem a bit rough. Definitely something I will keep my eye on.
Hey hey Matt how you dooooing brah! You good bro
I wonder if a combination of Darkest Dungeon, XCOM, Frostpunk game would come out for the masochist.
better red than ded!
sound like the game is based on a Daniel Steele book where miner on Luna went on strike
Lot's of potential but it will live or die depending on it's strat layer.
Dev here. Strat layer plays quite differently in each campaign. The workers campaign is about building your little guerilla nation on Mars. Smuggling missions, make-shift tech and weapons, survival, and ultimately carving out your place in the solar system. In the capital campaign you have more resources but also bigger fish to fry and less time to do it. Hope to share more soon.
@@takibigames Asymmetrical, interesting. Instantly wish-listed this yesterday. Good luck!
