- Here is the video many of you have been waiting for! Here is my trip to the Tamiya Plamodel Factory store in Shimbashi, Tokyo! This store was incredible, and better than I had imagined! Check out the neat stuff I bought! I was surprised to see a selection of Italeri models there, too. Italeri is a plastic model manufacturer in Italy. Perhaps Tamiya is their distributor in Japan?

I can’t get enough of these videos..
It’s like, I’m a little kid again..
Love all the English singing as well.
It takes a little while to tell what there singing...LOL
This one is a real treat for all use old model builders..
Thanks again..
Keep up the good work.
This is the Mecca for anyone into this I wanted to go there my whole life ever since I bought my first RC in 86 !!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
you are my new hero for posting this,,,,,,,,,,,,, thank you very very much
this is a real paradise!
Wow, thanks! As for myself, I'm not really into RC cars at all, but Tamiya is a company that gives so many people nostalgic memories, I think.
DUDE!!! I am crying manly tears!! This has got to be the COOLEST hobbystore on the
planet!!!
Even their model paint and supplies are actually in stock!!! I live in south Florida, and Tamiya model paints are very hard to find!!
Awesome 👏 video thanks
Tamiya's model kits are excellent--Italeri's are, too. The quality of their injection molding is the best I've seen. I could spend all kinds of money in the store there! Thanks for the video.
Great video! Thanks
Only in Japan could there be such a complete and absolute respect for the scale modeling hobby! I really wish we had hobby stores like this here in the States!
+Max Brandt Such stores continue to seemingly do well here in Japan, but it is disheartening to hear reports from those in English-speaking countries where local hobby stores are going out of business. Many times I have watched others' model acquisition videos and hear them talk about how their local hobby shop is going out of business, so they have marked their models for clearance. Sad.
stevethefishdotnet It is quite sad, those of us that enjoy the hobby are viewed as over grown children or weirdos by people obsessed with crap TV and "sportsball" games. Go figure! You're in a better place, Steve and I'm sure you're not mocked for reading either!
Das ist mal ein Laden ! SUPER !!!!!!! You were in Heaven
Just walk inside that store with a lot of money in your pockets and a van waiting outside!!!Paradise!!
If i saw a Tamiya store like this... i would have no life other than the one in the store. I'd love to work there.
What a shop!.....thanks for posting love your vid's
The jazz piano in the store area was cute. Shopping.............
¡¡¡¡El paraíso para los modelistas!!!!
Very jealous. Awesome store. Thanks for taking us along.......
Brad
I think the Testors' paints are great. Their acrylics brush on like a dream, unlike Tamiya's acrylics. It's just that Testors' acrylics can't be thinned with water like Tamiya's and therefore you must use alcohol instead. Tamiya has made lots of German cars too (and Italian, IIRC), but I think the issue we see is with licensing. For Tamiya to obtain a license with Nissan to make yet another Skyline model is perhaps easier to get one from Ford to make a Mustang. Plus the interest factor.
Thank you. Hope you're still enjoying the goodies you bought from the store.
Very good video tour, looked great in there and must have been a real eye opener.Great to see you enjoyed yourself.
I love Tamiya! My first RC car was the Hornet, my dad bought it for me in 1989? I was 14. Thanks dad (R.I.P.) for getting me my first Tamiya RC car...this company will always hold a special place in my heart. Great video, thanks for putting it up on CZcams!
Modeller's Heaven!
So jealous!! Kick ass video!!
Thanks so much for sharing this.
You know, it's a funny thing that you were so soft spoken and whispering because it made it feel we were being taken on a secret mission, and for me it added to the thrill. I also found myself verbally responding to your commentary. You were saying stuff such as "Isn't that cool?" and I was actually nodding my head and saying out loud "Hell yeah it is!" Fortunately, I wasn't anywhere public. :)
Thanks again for sharing this. :)
Wow!! Cool video. Thanks for posting it.
Be sure to check out my video of me visiting the Tamiya main office building!
I would never want to leave!!!!
The place of every modelers dream
SPACE SHUTTLE!!!!!!! Soooooooo coooll
Thank you for making these great videos love watching them.
I really like that you show outside the stores to.
Can`t wait for the next one
Thank you
I'm totally jealous, Tamiya are my favorite builds, they just fall together. Thanks for making this video, I loved it.
wow, model heaven.
thanks to show me that tamiya is not only about plastic models, there are tools, die cast metal kit, r/c control, paint. tamiya is big branded hobby thing.
Well worth a visit. Seven years ago I picked up 15 ships 1/700 scale there and am still making them.
That is fricken awesome man. Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic!
Yes I am jealous. I will have to go there some time. looks great.
now i have a serious money saving to do.. a tamiya factory in tokyo.. now thats adding up to my bucket list..
I love when a company does things that show they care about not only the customer but care about the transportation of their product, The little paint box is a great touch, it costs them almost nothing because of the volume they buy but they care enough to give you something like that because they know you use it to keep paints in at home. The store was nicely kept and everything was efficiently stocked, it was catering not only to their high end customer but their hobbyist clients as well, I was never a big fan of Tamiya but now I think I will buy more of their things because of this. I think more companies need to follow the lead of Japanese companies and show their customers respect in the hobby world. I havent been to Japan in a long time but it was always a very different market when it came to hobbies. mainly because hobbyist aren't treated like crazy shut ins who secretly plot to take over the world like they are here. I think its shameful the way model makers and "Concentration Hobby" enthusiasts are treated here, most guys and girls who make models, paper or plastic are actually very emotionally well adjusted people, I had a hard time with anger and concentration until I started making Paper models from Japan. Instead of all the crap kids here do in school, they need to teach model building and concentration here. Kids in Japan learn concentration skills very early and its part of the reason I think they are a little more civilized and sophisticated than the US.
+Phu Vet Very well said!
+Phu Vet Much agreed! Things seem to be going in the reverse here in the States, most people here think scale modeling is for little kids only or nutty losers, that's sad! I too like how the Tamiya showroom looks, I do believe it's the Japanese philosophy that *presentation is half the experience* is what makes for a great experience when visiting places like this.
Awesome video, thnx for uploading.
I feel lucky just for finding your video. Thanks for sharing your experience nice with us.
You're welcome!
Excellent video! I bet you were like a kid in a candy store! Can't beat Tamiya's quality
That place looks a whole lot fancier than a typical hobby store would be. Awesome video by the way!
This is geek heaven!
Thanks for sharing.
Like a kid in a candy store!
Great video.
yeah
I could spend my entire holiday budget in that store
What a sick arse hobby shop....sooo cool man! 100/100
great tour
Nice! Love those t-shirts!
That is soooo awesome!!! I want to go there sooo much. Thanks for sharing the video mate :D
Thanks for sharing your experience going through that place! Looks pretty wicked! So jealous.... LOL
WOW look at that scale model aircrafts AWESOME..
first non US kit i built was Tamiya back in the 70s, still love them today, great video!
I'd never leave! Great video man!!
Thanks. Nothing beats being in these stores in-person. Online shopping cannot replace the experience.
Loved the atmosphere in there... sounded like a piano bar. I expected you to turn a corner, and see a piano player, and a singer in a gown, with a microphone.
A paradise for a modeller!
fingers crossed I'll be here later this year awesome vid
i wish i was there so much.
its got so much STUFF !!!! i got to get there !
SO COOL! I'm envious, ya went through to fast LOL us Tamiya lovers needed more scans of the models. Great video
Great place. I really believe that Tamiya and Meng are two of the best kit manufactures. Can't wait till I go.
My first rc tamiya boomerang
Thank you for sharing the information. How come I didn't do my trip research when I visited Japan earlier this year! I stayed at the hotel not far from here (cry). Love to get those Tamiya stickers and T-shirts.... Tamiya is one of my favorite brands ever!
Because of your video, I am going this place today! Excited....
+Chorng-Woei Horng Glad to hear it! Have fun! I recently learned that there's another one in Yokohama somewhere. I found them on Twitter.
+stevethefishdotnet Thanks! No wonder I found another address in Yokohama, I was thinking it is my search mistake. No matter what, thank you again.😄
It's because so many of these stores in Japan refuse to allow cameras into their stores. This Tamiya store, on the other hand, seemed to welcome it.
Also, so many CZcamsrs out there walk around a city, pointing the camera at their face, saying "Hi there, CZcamsrs! It's me again! Let's go somewhere! Ah-ree-hee-hee!" I'm too embarrassed to do that. Besides, the videos I make aren't about me; they're about my hobbies. I'm not out to be the center of attention.
The square paint bottles are the enamel. The acrylic are still circular. As for the Italeri issue, apparently Tamiya is the Japanese distributor for Italeri. Platz is the Japanese distributor for Polar Lights and a few other companies, as is Hasegawa for Revell (IIRC).
i would just cry before entering here, it would be so amazing
That's because Airfix has its own distribution in Japan. Tamiya is the distributor in Japan for Italeri. Similarly, a company called Platz in Japan releases model kits by Polar Lights, AMT, and other foreign companies. Hasegawa imports Revell into Japan, while Dragon used to be the distributor for Hasegawa in the USA, but is now distributed by a company called Hobbico.
awesome video! im so jealous but hope to go there soon
My bank account would dry up quick!
thanks for sharing, would like to go one day, ill have to plan this.
@FeelinGipper Me too! I hope you can make it to Japan someday. Tokyo alone provides so much fun.
Tokyo looks like a movie set.
I'm really impressed that they decided to open up some of their office space in order to give enthusiasts a place to build their models and race slot cars together. And yeah, the store is amazing. I wish we had that kind of paint selection at my local hobby shop. In order to get Tamiya sprays, I have to order and wait two weeks. Can't even get fine white primer.
To answer your questions, yes I am very jelly. While I've taken a strong liking to Trumpeter, Tamiya still has a place in my heart. They go together well, and while some details maybe missing, it's all good. Detailing yourself is part of the fun no? I'd geek out on the inside at the store. Wouldn't mind a cap and shirt. Could use a whole lot of those paints though, I'm in CA. Trickling in real slow. If I ever go, this place on my list after Akihabara.
just one phrase* MODELLING HEAVEN!
wow they have everything! We need more stores like that in The states! haha
Love your video, and needless to say I'm drooling with envy from across the ocean. So many fond memories as a kid putting my new mabuchi 360 powered grasshopper together. Buying a frog, and stripping out the hex-shaped dogbones within 5 minutes. Those were the days. Tamiya runs deep in my blood. I'd kill for 10 minutes in that store. Nice post!
Great vid ill have to get out there myself! :)
Now I have a reason to go to Tokyo
Yes, the items are a bit cheaper in Japan than in the USA. However, the prices in the USA were not too expensive. Tamiya USA is a branch office that handles distribution, so perhaps that cuts costs.
COOL!!!!!
Paradise......
OK, Are you really able to compose yourself to the degree that you did or is it deliberate since you were filming? Personally, my wife and daughter would NOT go into this store or anything like it because I would have spent my cash, theirs, and yours! I would have been yelling, screaming, and panting like a dog in there. Good Job my Brother.
Tommy Michnay kip.
you can find hundreds of Tamiya model kits at Epcot in Disney World in the Japan part.
I visited a mega model wholesale shop that had all the the AMT, MPC, Revelle, and Monogram model kits including vintage kits as well!
Im a fan both of static and rc modelling
nice place!
aaarrgghhh! i want to go!
I bought a bottle of Tamiya Airbrush Cleaner in Ostend,Belgium last year and it's great stuff. You can't get it here in England so I'm off to Ostend again this year with more spending money to stock up.
very cool
WOW!..... ALTHOUGH IM A VERY KEEN MODDLER A TRIP TO TOKYO WOULD BE AMAZING!
I need to get a passport and go visit this place plus get a mortgage as spending money lol great video thanks
Thanks for the comment. I now live a short distance from Shizuoka, home of Tamiya headquarters! In May I intend to attend the Shizuoka Hobby Show. Stay tuned for more plastic model vids.
That's what the previous commenter failed to realize. On a visit to this Tamiya store (and any model store in Japan, for that matter), you will find a LOT of items that you can't just buy on eBay. Perhaps Tamiya doesn't bother exporting their enamel paint to America because Testors already has a strong foothold there. Likewise, I can only find Testors acrylics in Japan, unfortunately. Not all of the colors are the same.
I'm jealous Steve!!! Can I come for a visit and hit the model shops and tour Japan.? I haven't found any model shops like that here in the USA. Maybe Hobby Town
You'd love it here in Japan. I used to live in Shizuoka Prefecture, the plastic model capital of the world. I moved to a rather small town last December and was a bit disappointed that there were only two rather small model shops in town. Then recently I discovered a books/CDs/DVDs/games/toys store that has a rather large model selection. Wow. And I'm just here living in the mountains. When I still lived in Arizona, I would save my money all year for my annual trip to Japan and fill my suitcase of models.
You KNOW you're a modeller if....#1 - You go to Tokyo JUST to visit this store!
'Thumbs up if you're jealous'? Too bloody right!!! Next time, take me in your excess baggage!!!
Heh, of course not! That would be silly. For those Tamiya fans who'd never make it to Japan, that's what this video is for. I have another video of visiting the company headquarters building, too.
@FeelinGipper That's the interesting thing about taking these videos. While watching them, I notice stuff that I missed in person. I catch a lot afterwards. I'm taking these videos as much for myself as for everyone else.
Way too cool
