Solder is an interesting choice, but it bends too easily. So once it gets bent, then you can try to straighten it out, but it'll never be very straight again. The white stuff is just lightweight paper clay I bought at Daiso.

Macross and Mospeada had similar mecha and both had more compelling characters. The characters in Southern Cross were not very good. At least the Robotech version could explain how an incompetent girl could become commander, in that her parents were heroes and she was apparently promoted through the system riding their fame. I cannot remember if the Japanese version explained why she was in charge because she's a dumb character.

Well, if you mean flexible wire, then it would get bent up too much and look like crap. The pipes wouldn't be straight like they're supposed to be.

Yes. I have very few complaints about this model kit. It has good detail and a low price.

Halcyon's old kit of the Nostromo from Alien was a sofubi kit. Generally though, vinyl is used for figure kits. Horizon used to make all those Marvel superhero and Star Trek sofubi kits in the '90s. You can get a lot of great detail from vinyl as you can resin. Bandai's plastic model kits can rival that of resin it seems.

I saw the Tamashi Sirbine once at a store It was used and on display. It did not seem to have the same shield. The Tamashi version should be a poseable figure/toy collectible, while this model is a static figure kit. It has no movable parts. And yes, the shield is beautiful.

HA! Oh man, I forgot all about the Enya gag. I had to re-watch the end of this video. No, that was all nonsense and I wasn't serious about that. I couldn't imagine sending Enya a letter griping about upgrading my computer from a 32bit to 64bit OS and taking my dog to prom. 😆

Thanks. A few weeks ago I finished painting the hands. All I have to do now is put them on and I'll be done. Maybe over the 3 day weekend that's about to begin in a few hours from now!

That's the difficult thing with V-Color vinyl paints. I'm used to airbrushing with lacquer paints, but if I thin the V-Color paints to the same consistency, I get that spider-web effect. I find it best to not mix the paint in the airbrush cup but in a separate plastic cup. Even then I still can't get it right. Something else is that V-Color tends to dry out much more quickly than regular paint. So once I get the airbrush ready, get the camera set up, etc, once I start airbrushing the paint is too thick and I have to dump out the paint and start over again. I'm reminded of why I stopped doing vinyl kits for a long time. Regardless, it is fun and relaxing and I've resumed work on some vinyl kits I set aside several years ago. BTW, thanks for the tactful feedback. Too many are incapable of giving pointers without coming across as insulting and condescending.

Thanks. Unfortunately, the Bandai Y-Wing has separate parts for the yellow stripes. It would require puttying to completely remove the part separation from that. The Fine Molds Y-Wing didn't have that, of course.

I've pinned your comment because it was censored. Don't get rid of your Star Wars kits! Don't let them rob the joy you've had from the original trilogy. Star Wars is completely dead now. It began with Greedo shooting first in '97 and it's been downhill ever since then. But despite all the stupidity like helicopter lightsabers and degeneracy like this Acolyte nonsense, We grew up with the original trilogy and Kathleen Kennedy will never take that from me. I never watched Last Jedi and if I never watch any of this new crap, then it can't taint my love for the originals. For the same reason, I avoid watching Prometheus because I don't want it to ruin my love for the first two Alien movies.

For me, I am happy with what Harmy and Adywan are doing to make Star Wars endearing to us true fans. Even though Japanese viewers are oblivious to most of the underhanded political lecturing found in Disney's Star Wars, they still know a lousy story when they see it. My Japanese sister went to go see TLJ and she hated it. Her husband insisted on seeing it with her, and she told him he didn't want to see it. "But it's STAR WARS!" Then in the theater, he was wanting to walk out before the movie finished. And here in Japan, you don't get your money back like you can in the USA. Bandai's attitude towards SW seemed to change with TLJ and they produced less kits, primarily adding new parts to existing tools and focusing on the Vehicle Collection kits. The good news is that MPC will be releasing a 72nd scale TIE Bomber! I am willing to buy that, despite the fact that it'll be giving money to the mouse-eared Kingdom of Darkness.

Yes. Bandai kits build themselves and do not pose a challenge like this kit will.

@wwiiinplastic4712 Not only that, but the pipes on Bandai's 72nd scale Y-Wing can also pose trouble, I've heard. For this sofubi Y-Wing though, I have to create all of the pipes myself by hand!

@@stevethefishdotnet I didn't have a problem with my Y-wing but I can see how it would be for other people. Having a really good pair of nippers helps a lot to avoid snapping them.

@@wwiiinplastic4712 I've heard that if you paint the Y-Wing's pipes separately, you have to protect the snap parts because the extra coats of paint expands their size and prevents them from fitting properly.

I only paid about 2600 yen for mine. I think it had been for a lot more money, but this kit was sitting in that store for several years and I think they marked the price down. They had the Argo Nauts X-Wing too, but that must have sold years ago. I learned that this X-Wing is also sofubi.

@@stevethefishdotnet Several years ago someone through one of the discussion boards I was on at the time tried to sell me some 1/72 scale Star Wars kits, TIE Fighters, Y-Wing) and other related merch from the late 70s, they were unlicensed stuff from Japan and therefore quite rare, can't remember the manufacturer. I almost bought them, but he was asking for a couple hundred dollars for these items.

Unfortunately, Gundam: Senjou no Kizuna has been replaced with an "updated" version. It doesn't appeal to me. The big gaming capsules with wrap-around screens are gone, and they seem to be filled with mecha from Gundam shows I do not care for.

Yes, the show has been mostly the same, although some of the companies in the trade booth area have changed. Now that you live in Japan, I'd recommend checking out the Wonder Festival event this summer as it is even bigger. It encompasses three whole convention halls. One is dedicated to the big toy/model companies, and the rest are either smaller model companies and private vendors. Then there is the All-Japan Model Hobby Show in September. It's smaller than the Shizuoka show, but there are some different companies you don't see in Shizuoka.
