The "Parabola" represents the curve of life....you start and finish at the same place (ashes to ashes, dust to dust) the "Parabol" or Parable......is your life...what you make of it

I like the splitting of lyrics across stanzas, like the title of the two songs, a full parabola coming from eternal reaching down to earth and going back to eternal. Love this and Lateralus the best here in Seattle

Gotta get on Descending man... that song is a journey that carries you off and takes you on a ride of tones and brings you back to where you started.

The opening section (Parabol) is like a chant/prayer going out into the universe. And the whole of the song is praise for the glory of life and the universe in which it's lived. The exact details of the meaning of the song has changed for me throughout my life, and I feel like that's the greatest beauty of the songs Tool writes. This combination of songs is some of the best Tool has ever made.
A little fun fact, during Parabol and at the end of Parabola you can hear frogs croaking. They have these effects playing through the speaker system at their concerts, too. They have it moving through the speaker system so you get this really trippy surround sound going on. It is an amazing listen.

  • @connman8d617

It took me a while to figure out why this song is called "Parabola." But it makes sense. If you look at a parabola, it is a curve that stretches to infinity on both sides of its apex. The apex is a single point at which the parabola is flat and not extending into infinity. That's the symbolism. Our single mortal lifetime is the apex of the parabola. We are made of the same stuff as the sun and stars but we have been, for the briefest moment in time, granted the profound gift of a mortal life. "This chance to be alive and breathing" is a "holy experience" and being in a mortal body and interacting with other mortals is a comforting reminder that, even after we return to the form of space dust floating around the cosmos, we are "not alone."

It is very rare that there is a solo in TOOL's music. So you didn't find it. It's one of the many reasons I like them so much: I hate when a song stops to make the guitarist do something that has nothing to do with the rest, just to let us know that he can play well. This is usually how guitar solos work. You are listening to a good song and at some point it stops and a guitar starts playing scales (very often pentatonic scales) that are super fast and extremely high. I will never understand the need for it. TOOL luckily does not, and if there is something that looks like a solo, it is not put there for no reason but it is an integral part of the evolution of the track ... the song does not stop and the other instruments do not become a repetitive background. Many don't think like me and find solos cool ... But that's how I see them.

Right now, - Prison sex. A song about the cycle of abuse. Sang from the victim who becomes the perpetrator point of view. Harsh subject, but a really good, heavy , melodic song, with a pretty melody. Tool can do that though, give you a dark subject that makes you think, and then make it so catchy that you are like, "wait, what am I singing?" Haha Kinda like stinkfist, that sounds one way, then you dig deeper(pun intended) and find a whole different message.
How about maynards other band A Perfect Circle - Judith, Disillusioned, The Hollow
