  • The collapse of the Soviet Union was influenced by political, economic, military, social, and nuclear factors. Gorbachev’s reforms like glasnost (“openness”) and perestroika (“restructuring”) inadvertently hastened the dissolution by inviting criticism of the government and failing to revitalize the economy. The economic strain was compounded by a military budget indifferent to the lagging economy, a disastrous involvement in Afghanistan, and the Chernobyl disaster, which eroded trust in the government. These elements combined to undermine the Soviet state, leading to its collapse.
