So the $5k up front is awesome, but you forgot about the 4:1 Transfer case. Gears and big tires are awesome, but that’s only part of the equation. I like the way you’re thinking but for me it may be better to go straight for the Rubicon up front. 🤔
How important is a 4:1 transfer case in a Gladiator? The Gladiator is not going to traverse the same/extreme trails as a JL Wrangler since it is heavier and has a lower break over angle.
Jonathan Edradan that’s a valid question, but how long will it be before someone tries to do a gnarly trail with the gladiator?
I’ll watch all the builds and keep my options open, still have a while to save up my down payment and watch other builds come out.
@@jamesvasser2941 true. I'm in the same boat and will wait and see what options and mods are viable for this truck and to see real world testing of it's off road capabilities.
I dont rock crawl but do go out on trails so lockers are not that important to me. But maybe it will be for the Gladiator. Winch is far more important than lockers.
Buying the new design a year or two later should help you avoid the days of de-Bugging the mistakes out of the vehicle.
Wait two years. Buy a basic model. Spend $15,000 at your local 4x4 shop to upgrade to Rubicon quality.
Save $30,000. You're welcome.
No way would I leave off the Alpine speakers. Factory non-Alpine system just sounds so anemic. And I'm at the age where I don't want to spend a lot of time wiring up aftermarket stereo systems. I agree the Sport S is the way to go for aftermarket off roading upgrades down the line. I would keep the 4:10 gears and run 35's with a 2.5" lift. My Sport S build runs around $47k and change where the Rubicon for me is more like $54k.
I personally think the Rubicon stock with an added auto transmission will give you the best bang for the buck, particularly if you might trade it in in 3-4 years for the next new toy. At trade on, the Rubicon will bring far more than a sport s with a bunch of options
I agree completely, doing a fully loaded sport S then doing a Rubicon with the same options is only about $4,000. For me I think the $4,000 is worth it for the look alone, but it's also nice having that extra off-road protection like the steel bumper in the back with rock rails.
I see where you are thinking you will be saving 5k, but your going to be adding 3k back in with after market parts. You will never get it back on resale or trade in value but you will with a Rubicon. Factory options hold way more value than after market options.
Rob is not building for resale, Rob is building for his enjoyment. That 3k he's adding back will get him closer to the rig he wants.
Will consider purchasing one when the diesel comes out, if it ever does.
2020
I wonder when the hybrid will be out? Also, if diesel, I hope they have a more reliable engine available than the Eco Diesel.
2020 today, 2019 last year. Its a moving target. We'll see what they say in 2020. I give up.
Great presentation, as always. Well done. Can’t wait to test drive one!
I think that the most bang for your buck is the Rubicon, as you priced the Sport S with the Max Tow package and an equivalent Rubicon which would run about $5000 more. From past experience for a lift, lockers, high clearance fenders, Electronic sway bar disconnect, etc... You are looking at WAY MORE than $5000, you'd be more in the $7500 range and would have a "cobbled" together rig. If you want lockers and sway bar disconnect, high clearance fenders, get the Rubicon. Just my $.02.... Great presentation, I spent half the night last night "building" different versions!!!! Now all I have to do is sell my JKU!!!
Planning on getting the Rubicon version with alot of the options. I'm not planning on doing any builds afterwards, just a snorkel, winch and radio transceiver, I'll have enough for a good sized downpayment for mid 2020. All the options came out to 10k, so about 55k MRSP, you still have figure in taxes and the other feess... plus I wanna get a nice boar to tow behind it 😏🦀
Update: played around with other models, for my money's worth. Get the Rubicon, most bang for your buck. The time you get the options you want, its almost the same price as the Rubicon, which has some of those options as standard equipment... generally about 1k different in pr6when all said and done with the options you pick out.
Nice build. I personally would go with the Rubicon because you don't have to regear for 37's. I have 37's on my '18 jlu Rubicon and it does just fine. If I can get what I'm asking for my '11 Raptor, I'll head to the dealer and order one up.
Les Szabo Agree !!!
A year or so will see the deep discounts from FIAT on their Jeep Trucklite version. I think it's worth the wait. 62 grand for FiAT's Wrangler. does seem a bit silly.
I'm driving down the road in my Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk listening to this video in the car, and I am driving next to a new Gladiator which looks to be in a group of press Corps vehicles from Michigan how nuts is that
Nice build Rob. Going with the max trailer package to get the wider differentials and the 44 in the front makes a lot of sense since you'd be ditching a bunch of the Rubicon stuff in the near future. Hoping to get to drive a Gladiator in Moab or at least get a ride in one. We're heading out from western Berks County PA for Moab this Friday evening with some stops along the way including the Broken Arrow trail in Sedona. Safe Travels, God Bless and See you in Moab Brother!
Thank you for taking us Jeep shopping with you
Definitely an awesome vehicle, I agree better to build your own than to buy one all set up. I would build mine as well for some off road, more on road and a little adventure as needed!
Steel wheels are better for serious off-roading. Can straighten them out with hammer. Of course, I don't do ary serious off-roading. I like what you built. About the same way I'd want one.
I just ordered one It better be a good Tow vehicle as I'm using it behind my motorhome
Given that you didn't mention needing or using the bed much....or even towing....save your money for a used '18 or '19 JL Rubicon that someone has put a bunch of upgrades on and get a screaming deal...you might even find one with every toy you want imaginable.... you can thank me later. :-)
Thanks for the video. You are saving $5K you say but doing the aftermarket lift kit, tires, rims, lockers, spray in bed liner etc... is going to cost you a lot more than $5K than you say you are saving. I would just get the Rubicon and be done. I want to add also doing the aftermarket lift and other options will void your warranty!
Keep in mind, the rubicon doesn't include a life, tires, etc. so that $5k difference.. is essentially only getting you lockers and electronic disconnects. the bed liner is the same price option for either trim level.
Great info , but jeep has put the blue collar workers out of the picture with pricing
All automakers did that several years ago when people thought they needed a car full of safety nannies and electronic shit to get them from point a to point b.
@@wildbill23c The NHTSA takes some blame, too. They require most of those expensive safety features like backup cameras.
I don't have a source for it but when I was buying my JL last year on the forums FCA released something that said the median income of the average Wrangler buyer nowadays is $100k+. So.. yeah. They're targeting that demographic now.
@@parentaladvisory66 If you need all that shit you have no business driving a vehicle in the first place.
@@mj-np9sy Must be all automakers...even if I made that much I sure as hell wouldn't buy anything built in the past decade.
Great vid... I guess it's to all their own though! I like to build so I always get base with just the stuff I like as far as luxury that can't be easily done later. I don't rock crawl so Rubicon is just a waste, but I get why both the real crawlers and mall junkies love them! I like to build for need and these Jeeps have so much aftermarket support you can create your vision if your patient. I love Jeeps and the owners for the most part, we all got here somehow right? For me I like all the models but there really isn't one that's better than the other... It ALL depends on you. I wheel a lot and I've seen a 99 TJ with a 4 cylinder pretty much stock with 33's out wheel a 14 Rubicon that was pretty built. People always forget skill and practice... That experience taught me that for the most part ALL these WRANGLERS are pretty damn capable... The real question is "are you?"
The Rubicon looks good, the price way to much no midsize trucks should cost 60 some thousand it's better off to buy a HD truck for that price I would buy the sport s and build-one and u would save some money buy a lift kit and 35's and u r all set great video as always🤘🤘
I want one so bad. I use to do the same building online with the TJ's and JK's all the time when the first models came out.
The quote “Help me, I’m poor” comes to mind 😂
Sport a for sure, stick shift, not sure if hard or soft top, will have to drive and check it out first, but will wait for the diesel option before buying anything.
I hate to rain on your parade, but apparently the ecodiesel will only be available with 8 speed automatic next year. Hopefully they eventually mate it to the manual tranny, a diesel, manual jeep pickup truck is anyones wet dream
Buy the Rubicon, sell the parts you don’t want immediately and start the build the very next day. That’s the money shot! Should be able to sell that for at least $1500
I wish I can afford it. I just got me a 2019 Jeep Wrangler Sport Edition. Loving it!!!
Nice..enjoy..top off asap!!!
G Gonzalo thank you so much. May 18th is the topless day for Jeeps.
I believe the Rubicon model for the Wrangler comes with a better transfer case than the Sport. I don’t know if that’s the same with the Gladiator. But it would be nice to have also.
I own a 2017 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Hardrock 2-door. Loaded up with everything and a manual 6-speed. Been watching this new Gladiator ever since they introduced it. Want the diesel. 3.6 liter is to under powered. You have to keep the revs up to make it work. 8-speed automatic has made a huge difference though. Just feel the 3.0 liter diesel and the Gladiator were made to go together perfectly. Just wish I knew the exact date to order one with the diesel. This will be my forever vehicle.
I've got a JLUR and I've never felt it was underpowered. It's definitely not fast and I'd prefer (and really wanted) the diesel but who knows if that will ever actually come out..
@@mj-np9sy I've wondered that too. Still not back in the Ram 1500.
Where's the old KEY ignition option - push-button-start delete?
The rubicon offers an additional front trail cam option, which is pretty tempting. The other thing I've considered.. does the sport S trim level give you the "offroad pages" like I've seen in the rubicon?
Definitely gave me something to consider rather than ordering a Rubicon. Dang it.
By watching the build price on your jeep be it a gladiator, JL etc. Will also reflect in the added cost in to the total sale tax, registration fees and financing fees. Which can be a deal breaker.
FYI, you need the 8 speed automatic to get the Max Tow Package. None of the media reviews have mentioned this. Including this guy! I don't think he should place an order before he understands the Gladiator options better.
Enjoyed your review. Wow 4190 is special because of a zip code???? Give me a break!!!! And you get a badge, some painted same size wheels, and seat logo, my goodness where do I sign up, maybe I should pay more than $62 just so I don't feel taken.....
Can it pull a single wide mobile home, I would need to move to the trailer park myself to afford that
Walmart has Vasoline on sale, start stretching
62k+ for a full build....insane, literally...insane. I’ll stick with my paid for ‘99 TJ. After 20 years of ownership I only have 18k into it which includes purchase price and every single repair including tires I’ve purchased. Idiotic to even consider this.
waiting for the pro builders to do their thing before I build one. Evo x et al. I am not a good beta tester. I guess the Rubicon T case is 5 grand. I like your build. It makes sense. Or go stock and get Dynatracs.
When are they gonna do a factory bedliner interior option lol
I think it depends on how quickly do you want to go wheeling. It might be close to a year before we see a solid selection of aftermarket lifts and accessories available for the Gladiator.
Mopar is releasing over 200 add one/upgrades with the release of the gladiator. At least that's what TFL truck said in a specific vudeo.
@@JRsVsO yes but that's just Mopar. Most people who do serious upgrades don't use Mopar for things like lifts and other suspension components. Companies like Metal Cloak, teraflex, and EVO make the best stuff out there. They took about a year to come to market with their JL products after the release.
@@plastr0023 I concur. With that said I know for a fact several lift kits and wheel combos plus stronger thicker drive shafts are coming out very soon if not out already by some. Good luck on your build if you buy one.
@@JRsVsO That's what they told us when the JL released, I bought mine in April and there wasn't crap for parts until the end of the year. Mopar stuff did come out earlier than that but it's subpar stuff.
I own a JK Rubicon full loaded, it would cost 60k to get Gladiator Rubicon like my JK. 65k for the diesel version. Would be cheaper to buy a sport strip it down and build the truck you want with aftermarket parts.
Some people like to build their own off-road vehicle. Others, such as myself, like to have proper engineers design the vehicle and a state of the art factory manufacture the vehicle. I don't find Jeep's prices on the JL's or the new Gladiator to be out of line with the times. Of course, I live on Molokai where the cheapest gasoline cost $5.05 per gallon.
Curious if anyone knows, but I tried to add Max Tow Package to Sport S model in the "build" tool on jeep.com, but it will not let me add it. It looks like it is available, but when attempting to add it, it does not add it. Does anyone know if the Max Tow Package is still offered for Sport S model?
Just went on Jeeps website apparently their having some technical issues cause it had the rubicon base priced at $1,595 haha
Buy..Buy..Buy..
But a few dozen of them.
Jeep Gladiator or Deuce and a Half? Seems to me I can get a surplus Hummer and a Deuce for the same price of one "Loaded" Gladiator... with money left over.
Get rid of the ESS and all the BS. Just want the Rubicon drive line with the striped down interior.
It's easily disabled permanently, or I hit the switch to turn it off when I think about it. It only bothers me in stop and go rush hour traffic. I don't even think about it on every other commute.
I'm sure there will be mark up since these are going to be a hot ticket item. Wish I'd waited now but I still like my JL sport.
Great review, with very detailed info ! Jeep has another hit on their hands. I will keep an eye out for the 1st one that I see on the road, which I guess will be very soon! I bet many of the women will be ooohing and ahhhing over your color-coordinated fashion sense as well!
Oh man Jeep, that's WAY too expensive....nothing to see here people, move along.....
Jeep isn't the only one that's too expensive all automakers are. Wait a few years and buy a used one for less than 1/2 the cost of new.
Diesel...diiiiiieeeeeseeelllll
Waiting patiently.
419 sounds special and limited. 4190 vehicles doesn’t seem very unique or limited at all....
They need to make a two door extended cab long bed then I'm in👍
If you're buying this do yourself a favor and skip the crappy headliner that I think is $400 or $500. I couldn't believe how crappy mine was compared to Hotheads when my friend installed his hotheads and I got to see them in person. I had a panel thats glue melted off and I had to reglue it on. It's SO thin and cheap. Worst option I got.
Oh, I'd skip dual tops as well. The OEM soft top looks bad. Mine is sitting in the box still. I should've saved the money and just gotten a trektop and the oem hardtop. That's totally subjective though. Doubt I'll ever put my oem soft top on.
Great review ... great vehicle ... so on the long~term quality front, I’m concerned ... might be better to lease than initial purchase ... Consumer Reports comes down hard on overall Jeep quality. Your thoughts?
I used the Jeep website to configure a Rubicon with all the options I would want, $61K. Yikes. Then, since I would like a future hybrid model, I may be looking at $67K or so. Then, customize after market and I'm looking at around $72K. I need to start saving now. And that doesn't include destination charge and taxes. So, someone could end up paying as much as $80K? Alright, I now need to dial it back.
Yeah, think hard on it. I have a $56k JLUR (you can get them 10-15% below invoice, don't pay invoice) and while I love it I can't stop thinking "man, $60k will buy me THAT?" when I see some other vehicles.
Almost $20,000 extra for the Rubicon with all the extras that's ridiculous, on my personal opinion that's a overpriced extras just couple extras had a decent price.
In my opinion, you don't need all the options, the options I picked for the Rubicon came out just over 9k giving a mrap of 54k and change.
Oooooooooo I would like to see something affordable from Jeep again. Something where you can actually pick the options you want, not packages with a couple of the options you want, and a bunch of fluff
i wish they offered the leather seats on the sport s. Thats the biggest thing holding me up between the rubi and sport s. Some people dont like leather but im a line cook there for my clothes get grease on them in return get on my seats. Leather is much easier to clean.
BuBBz it’s very easy to add leather seats to it. Mopar even sells the Katzskins leather as an accessory
I've got a JLUR with leather and if I did it again I'd skip the leather and get them upholstered myself. Better leather, better color selection, can even add ac/heating to them.
I figured what was holding you up was being a line cook. Who is paying for this thing for you? Do you not have rent or mortgage, property taxes, utilities, wife, vehicle maintenance, license plates, kids, dr. and dentist bills, dog, Insurance’s, groceries, gas, and other money sucking vices? WTF I am going to quit my $28.76 Hr. job with all the benefits and plenty of overtime and have my wife quit her job and we both will apply for a line Cooks job🤑. That is about like saying; I am a paper boy and I can us the bed of this vehicle to put My papers in for delivery (don’t know how I am going to pay for it $$.$$$🤔) but I would need the leather wrapped steering wheel so it would be easier to clean from the news print on my hands! I digress, go for the Rubicon.
Great video and I agree with you on model and options!
45 k count me out
I want to preorder the launch edition but is it only available in automatic? I really want a manual rubicon
The Gladiator would be great to buy as a truck without extra TAX for The Netherlands, did you have the size already for me?
The prices are just ridiculous ... pretty truck, maybe a little gimmicky.. but the prices are nuts especially since Jeep hasn’t had rebates since the 90s I believe..
They are about $1000 to $1500 more than a Tacoma that is equally equipped. So yeah, they are both very expensive. But, they are priced to compete with well.....their direct competition and what people are already paying for trucks like this.
All truck prices are insane
A similar equipped Tacoma to the Sport S he build would be an SR5, which is a solid 10,000 less than the Sport S he built
Why can't Jeep put the lockers and sway bar option on the overland or sport model as an option. I have to have those and with the Rubicon having a longer wheel base than my ZR2 you will have to lift any of them. I want one bad but right now only the $10k more for my comparable ZR2 isn't worth it. Of course I can't remove my doors or top and I don't have a hidden Bluetooth speaker. Lol
So shmucks like me have to buy the more expensive one. Kind of like how the ZR2 only gives you a black dashboard if you buy the GMC version. Some people (me) would've bought the GMC just to have a black dash..
they should have added a roll bar from the top of the truck to the back of the bad....it looks unfinished
Way to much for that pickup especially for the engine size with no hemi!
Frank Parrish Yeah yeah yeah, I have a 2017 Jeep Wrangler unlimited Rubicon Recon myself. OK I stand corrected it doesn’t have a supercharger!!!!
You upgrading your JT with whole sale priced parts, or paying retail like us peasants?
Yikes, at $45,000 that’s nearly $60,000 cdn!
That is a great freaking build! That is exactly what I was thinking about doing with my Gladiator. Thanks Robb!
Very smart build.
So this is like a rubicon with out lockers and electric sway bars?
No lockers, no sway bar disconnects, no 33s, no Fox shocks, no 4:1 transfer case. Just the widetrack axles
This "launch edition" is one of those mechanisms that separates fools from their money.
Where is the DIESEL OPTION!!!!?????
Still just a super expensive Scrambler 2.0. Better off buying an older Jeep and upgrading the hell out of it for far cheaper.
Useless bed and too expensive that's all
You just can not put a snowmobile or a atv there that's all .....otherwise it is goog for yuppies that put a yoga mat in the box ... a 2 doors king cab with a 7 feet bed would have been great and that is smart that's all !
Midsize pickup truck? Extended wrangler with cargo box is what I am seeing, not a Jeep hater, just somewhat disappointed as far as the pickup part goes.i was hoping for a hard top well insulated for weather and road noise and a nice ride. I don’t need for the windshield to fold down, doors to come off ect. If I wanted that I would have bought a wrangler.
🤦🏾♂️ you want a Tacoma or Ranger then. This truck is for the person who wants everything you don’t want.
That’s is fairly obvious, still not a midsized pickup just another wangler at hart which is ok, not what I was hoping for from Jeep, that’s all, no hate! PS. I have owned both, tocoma and Ranger that is why I was hoping Jeep was coming out with something like that.
I agree. Jeep should have gone with a whole new vehicle design rather then just slapping a bed and Reusing rear JL doors on the rear. Seems like a lot of corners cut.
I wish Jeep gave up the stupid fold down window. I know there's 145 people that live by the beach that use it. I'd prefer a windshield with some concave to it that doesn't break every time a rock looks at it. It'll never happen. Instead now we have to do weird shit like mount the cruise control cameras right in front of your face, etc.
And people thought the Ranger was expensive. The Gladiator is priced to compete with 1/2 ton pick ups. Not sure how this is going to sell.
62k uh-huh
Rubi with all the extras I want...$57,470...OMG!!!! Anyone wanna buy a kidney? That's not including the 2inch lift and 35's :-(
You don’t need lift kit for 35s on the JT.
no thank you.... i'll pass
Gladiator can suck it. Jeep execs tried to bankrupt companies like Quadratec. They don’t mind mind a super duper special forces high power airborne awesome rig. It will never be off-road or crawled or used on farm or by ranchers. Gladiator will be kept polished and shiny.
Forget it. Jeep leadership pumped the poodle. I would not want to work at that plant. They won’t build many. It’s quite insulting. This is why the housing bubble 08 happened. They know people will buy something even if they can’t afford. May wait for one that’s been repo’d as there will be many. Jeep Co is like a rich old guy. Maybe when he was young on his first marriage he was ok before he started neglecting his responsibilities. Later, at 48 he finds meets a friend of his daughter who a gold digger. Sometimes you get what you deserve. Jeep will be a legend since they have no future. When they switched from a 30+ year proven engine is when they began to decline.
Wont build many ? The whole year production schedule for the Gladiator has been sold and a increase in production is scheduled for next year .
Not worth half that
Com-pa-ra-ble... not com-pair-able.... "compairable" isn't even a word.
...wonder if the W/T 44 is still central disconnect.
That is just an ugly truck...
