    Paul I'm happy to see you on the other side of your surgery. Praying that you have a speedy recovery. I've been there with the bale and throwing up, I had an EG tube down my throat like for 25 days because the bale keep coming up and I could not pass gas or use the toilet because nothing was working down there. When I started passing gas I was crying full of joy because that was a big hill climb. Praying for you buddy.

      A lot of hospitals in New York have been operating with minimal staff (evidenced by me sitting in urine due to understaffing when I was in ICU; even the patient advocate took 3 days to show up in my room when I called & left a message for them while soaked in pee)...this was before the global trend started in late 2019 / early 2020 that has had healthcare in a scramble ever since. Some hospitals are worse than others; but I think most are operating with insufficient staffing. I'm so sorry that you're having to deal with it. It's good that you're bringing awareness to the need for staffing.

    Thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery. My mother has severe crohns and has had 18 inches of her small intestines taking out and that was a night mare in the hospital . the Nurses did not care for me or my sister because were both in the medical field , i volunteer with fire dept and ambulancce and my sister works with eyes and all that jazz. I called every single day and my sister went up to see her everyday and there was a few days i flipped out on the nurses because they were over dosing her on meds like pain meds etc and then she got a severe infection. At one point in one of her stays they had to call a code blue or red which means you have a patient starting to code etc. The sad part is you have to advocate and get on the drs and nurses about stuff. Don;t be afraid to ask many many questions and this was a few years ago and its sad as of now how short staffed the hospitals are. I went to the ER a few weeks ago and i waited 9 hours to get a bed and see a dr and they had rooms and beds avail just not enough people to take care of patients and what they did was if drs and nurses did not get their covid shots they fired them. So there was a couple thousand drs and nurses that got fired and the system cant figure out why they are short staffed and why they have people dying in side their emergency departments waiting to get called back for a bed. Make sure to keep on the drs and nurses about his care.

    I'm sorry I'm a little confused. Did he end up with a total colectomy after all? Because in the previous vlog it was supposed to be a shorter surgery only to resect part of his colon and give him a colostomy while his rectum heals. And from my understanding he ended up in surgery longer than the normal time of that surgery. I'm facing the massive possibility of total colectomy and ileostomy due to ulcerative colitis, intestinal paralysis, further intestinal paralysis due to spinal cord injury, and severe recurrent fecal impactions followed by severe diarrhea with severe dehydration since I can hardly drink anything from gastroparesis already and the diarrhea worsening my current dehydration

    • @TheRawLife1
      @TheRawLife1  Před 2 lety

      No worries, I'll clear it up.
      Original plan was Total Colectomy and to have an Ileostomy and hopefully reconnect to rectum later.
      New plan is partial colectomy, give him a colostomy and reconnect later. The surgery was VERY long. Much longer then expected. No major complications but much longer.
      Try not to stress out about it, if you ever have any questions please reach out to us. Paul is willing to answer questions to the best of his ability. Obviously he hasn't had it long but we have learned so much!
      I hope you feel better and get the treatment you need💚😃👍
      That dehydration and diarrhea combination with gastroparesis must be very difficult, I hope you get relief asap💚

    You are very lucky with one nurse for 8 patients it can sometimes be more like 15 patients for one nurse and maybe one nursing assistant (career / healthcare worker) but not always. I used to work 32 patients with myself ( a nurse) and two healthcare assistants all night 13 hours. This is common practice in the UK. I understand short staffed. I usually give more supplies than needed when go in room. I glad paul was getting in chair on and off all day. Usually in UK relatives are not allowed to stay unless it is a child or in end of life care occasionally if not speak English or have complex health conditions that reguire constant monitoring ie communication difficulties such as severe learning disabilities.

    I can fully relate to this story I was in the hospital for 2 months in 2013 and I had a family member with me every day, it was interesting to say the least, it was eye opening to see how patients are treated, patients need advocates. The multiple stories I could tell. Some good staff and nurses but some should not be in the field. I don't say this with pride but because of my experience and complaints the head nurse of the department was fired.I was introduced to the new head nurse of the department by the CEO of the hospital. I think that they were afraid I was going to sue them for the multiple reasons that happened. It was a very negative experience.

    Sending prayers and hugs I understand my friends surgery after care happened they didn’t like to wake her up and she went to sleep and slept after surgery because they don’t like to see patients in pain or in her case she had the ileostomy and they wanted to make sure everybody was on board to learn the cares for that so I learned the cares for both an ileostomy and colostomy I understand what you’re saying Just be more vocal and understanding of your nurse sometimes they are having a rough time of it to especially with the nurse shortages so spoil your nurses and your husband and just be gentle with both

    A: that hospital in Orlando is under some really bad scrutiny in the nursing community because their staffing ratios are garbage and causing some horrible safety issues. That's ridiculous that they wrapped a sheet around his neck instead of getting him a basin to throw up in.
    B: as a nurse who deals with dumb visitation protocols we don't get a choice in who gets to have visitors stay overnight. Not even the charge gets that choice. Things are getting looser as Covid is less severe, but hopefully you aren't mad with the nurses who don't get a choice in the situation. In my last hospital the only people who could have someone sty overnight were those who were dying and those who were mentally incapable of controlling themselves without a family member there.

    Could you guys share what surgery was expected & what they did? Why if a change of plans? Permanent bag?
    Schmooze?...I think you "schmoozed" the nurses? Rightly so, glad Paul got care. An advocate when you're in the hospital can be so important!

    • @TheRawLife1
      @TheRawLife1  Před 2 lety

      Sure!
      So original plan was a total colectomy and give me a Ileostomy. Then later on connect the small intestine to the rectum.
      This plan is good but it has its pros and cons just like everything.
      The new plan that happened was a partial colectomy and give a colostomy and then connect to rectum later on.
      This one is a great option because he retained about 70% of his colon and when they reconnect he should have a normal bowel function.
      The bag can be permanent, it's whenever he wants to reconnect they the surgeon will. The surgeon said he won't do it earlier then 6 months, but if Paul wants to wait a year or two then he forsure can.
      What's most important is that Paul is feeling much better and his quality of life is getting better each day!

    Paul, I bet they gave you fentanyl. Thats usually in the pre-op / intra-op protocol. I have to ask them never to give me that and say "all it does it make me vomit". Ask them what painkiller they gave you and in the future tell them before EVERY FUTURE SURGERY NEVER TO GIVE YOU THAT PAINKILLER. I'm saying this as Ive had 10 major surgeries and 20 minor ones. I know muscle relaxers do make you tired but won't make you vomit. I know PAINKILLERS are different for everyone and for me its FENTANYL = THE BARF MEDICINE. find out what it is for Paul and put it in the system as an allergy. Thats what the nurses have told me to do.
    also, go out in the hall and grab a nurse and find one and demand vomit bags or whatever supplies are needed (with a mask of course). my hubby learned this lesson, too.
    finally, NOT JUST YOUR HOSPITAL....ALL HOSPITALS ARE RUNNING AROUND 6 ROOMS PER NURSE ON A STEP DOWN UNIT, EVEN AT DUKE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL. I was just in for an above knee amputation, so that's why I say this. (got home from acute rehab yesterday).
    FINALLY, don't allow them to bring Paul home until HE FEELS READY.
    ps. I also LOVE WHEN MY HUBBY IS SUPRR HAPPY AND FUNNY AT THE HOSPITAL. he decorates my "white board" in the room with jokes and silly stuff and my husband makes jokes (I love jokes) and lays by me in bed. we also love watching horrible movies on the hospital TV or awesome old movies like Indiana Jones or whatever is on TV 😃

Solid food create solid waste , ... and I can't understand, why would that be acceptable., anyway - janiece, try to request a pain pump if he's still In severe pain - what it does, is to give a little dose of medicine when needed - it comes with a button, that he can press n dispense the amount in small amounts ( can be used as much as needed. I had it, when I had fibroid removal in 2016 - had me smiling all through my recovery in the hospital. In reference to that solid food he should eat, I'm not all too happy about that, doesn't sound right!!!, I advice y'all to stay around when he's having his first ... well ( yuh know ) - anyway, watch very closely, and return to liquid if he's uncomfortable., I know you guys, have to obey the doctors and nurses, but if it causes him much discomfort, do what's best for him only. My view Is ( nobody can know a situation until they've being there themselves - yes they learn and is very knowledgeable to their field of work and expertise, BUT - the way I see it, those are just articles they've studied for years upon years., and it can't come close to experience - people can learn all they can, but unless they've being in it themselves, they would NEVER ever know what it's like - no matter how they try. Another thing to get on hand is prune juice, its for difficult times., I also suffer for constipation, so I know - ... and trust me, it's NOT EASY!!!.
    .... Well, God's healing to you Paul and Jeniece, take care.

      Paul was suppose to get a pain pump but in the end he opted out for it. Paul didn’t want to depend to much on the pain meds.
      It was a requirement for Paul to be able to walk around on his own, hold down solid food and pass solid stool before he goes home. To make sure everything is functioning the way it’s suppose to.

    I can understand the hospitals being short-handed but when someone is throwing up a nurse needs to always be there when someone is throwing up you don't want all that on their body you don't want it in the womb you just don't want that person to be that sick and I know from experience family is the only thing that really helps that sick person I know the caregivers are short-handed but if you're not there when that person is real sick and cleanup person up then the nurses will not do it and sometimes they will not do it good I have respect for people staying in the hospital with their loved ones and taking care of them that's what you have to do and I do know sometimes that you can ring for a nurse and they just will not come they are some of them that will be at that desk and just sit there

      Yes this hospital stay taught us a lot of patience and that hospital staff are very short staffed. Most of the time it took our nurses 30 mins to come into Paul’s room. Thankfully he had family helping him during his stay
