Today we work on out woodwprking skills and tomorrow Cl3ver works on his spelling... In my defense, I just had surgery and am just on ALL the drugs :D
It took me a while to realize it was a typo, I thought you were trying to emulate some old fashioned writing. 🤣
how do you only have 9k subs man?
@@Kingdeotius When I joined a few months back, I was shocked he was only at like 2k subs. He's growing!
in short yes you can,,,but you didnt go for power and it isnt pistol sized....challenge accepted? popsicle sticks and fishing line will do it lol
oh the way you "install" the bundles means you are not weaveing the limbs into the bundles which also arent tensioned equally .......yes its longer to thread the bundle but iis avoids problems of limb alignment , bundle tensions ...they both need to be equal or one limb moves faster than the other making aiming impossible. if the limbs arent woven into the bundle you can loose them or find them coming to meet you as they arent attached! they also tend to change there location which also causes issues. so up and down one side of the limb then the other keeping as much tension on the line as you can as you go...then tune it through the capstans.
I love this escalation.
"We have shields"
"We have a ballista"
Next month he's going to show us how to build a trebuchet.
Lol. Well on our way to nuclear Armageddon!
@@SkillTree we should make an oxybelous like a crossbow that’s 6 feet long
@@SkillTree what skill does that level up?
I like how this went from various weapons and armor, slowing down and doing stuff like a lantern, a book cover, and some dnd dice, but just went straight to "is this legal?😂"
I like to keep you on your toes 😅
All I wanted to know was how a Roman Scorpio works. Not only did you show me how one works but you also demonstrated a way to build one. Cool! Great video.
I little tip, from me: When I created my first Ballista, I noticed, that the Ballista has a lot more power, if you make the arrow touch the main body less. I didn't think it was such a big difference, but it made the range from 30 meters to 40.
How were you able to make the arrow touch the body less?
@@JoshuaDowdUSBC by adding a curve to the arrow slot. To we’re it would only touch wood at the front and the back.
Just one thing, might be safer with the ratchet flipped, so the latch sits on top of the wheel. That way, in a worst case situation, gravity can still try to hold the wheel, rather than release it.
Just came across your channel and I am absolutely stoked by the number of fun, shamelessly nerdy, innovative ideas you've made a reality. Some months ago I designed and built a (rather ridiculous) trebuchet handgun but never quite finished it due to some epoxy-related mishaps. This is a little encouragement to finally get it done before starting a ballista as well!
I love "WOODWPRKING"... 😂
🤣 what a goober. I was so upset when I noticed that
I love how much bigger this is than most other things on this channel
Wow... you seriously took it to another level this time
Lol! I take challenges to the fam very seriously! Thank you for watching!
Just watched your Crossbow lady killer video and this one and sir, you got yourself a subscriber.
One thing, i think you may like... You can use Dyneema rope instead of Paracord, it's more robust and it's a thing some archers use when our strings get wore down and snap. Also
You should try to use a technique called splicing, instead of using knots ;)
Keep up with your channel, it's awesome.
Great build! I hope you are recovering well. FYI if you had used hemp or manilla rope and got the rope wet first you can get A LOT more power out of that ballista. Also try using square molding to make the arrows, cheap and can be bought to fit the grove in the pallet wood. Have you checked the battery in your mic? One last thing, varnish the wood to protect it from the weather, maybe burn in some designs before you do. This is my favorite channel on CZcams. You need a contest or something to encourage more subs, how about a give away where you randomly assign a winner from people who comment or something? Maybe make a cool dice bag to give away... :)
Hey, interesting comment about using hemp rope. I think Erwin Schramm used hemp in his reconstructions around the time of the first world war. I wonder if he wetted the rope after installing the skein. If you get fresh hemp(new hemp rope), install it in the ballista, and then get it thoroughly wet once(and then let it dry and leave it dry), it will shrink permanently and the skein would tighten.
Great tips! As far as contests go, I will definitely be planning some soon. As it stands, I am trying to make 1 give away project a month for my Patreon members, but I will definitely do some subscriber give aways as well😁. So glad you are enjoying the channel!
Gosh I instantly fell in love with this channel in less then a minute
Thank you so much!😁 welcome to the Fam!
Ah yes I remember my first siege engine well. I went with a trebuchet. I had a variable weight system so i could adjust range. It could launch a 1 pound grapefruit 100 meters. That's a one pound grapefruit fresh or frozen. I brought it to a friend's birthday party to test it out. I named it "The Bad Neighbor".
Cl3ver, you have no idea how perfect your escalation was here. The ballista we know in the conventional sense (the arrow-shooting two-bundled torsion engine) is actually a "catapult," pure and simple, coming from the ancient Greek word "Katapelta." "kata" as in down, and "pelta" as in shield. In the etymological sense, the word catapult is literally Greek for "shield destroyer." The catapult is literally the antithesis to the shield. The name may have arisen from the catapult's ability to pierce shields and break them, or otherwise send a bolt clean through a shield and into a man. There are accounts from Roman times of catapult bolts pinning men, who were wearing armor and holding shields, to trees.
Ace in the hole.
That is AMAZING 🤣. If only it were on purpose!
As a history and fantasy geek I thank you sir! You have protected the village! Or the tree as the case may be. Many thanks! Btw awesome job man!
Now to make a trebuchet that uses a counterweight to launch a 90kg projectile over 300 metres.
Hot damn! I would need to find a field to make that in!
When you find out your 1% Roman
OMG YESSSS!!! This is something i've been waiting on for years! I didn't know how much I needed this craft until it released. Amtgard Siege weapons here we go!!!
Oh man! I look forward to seeing how you keep it safe 🤣
My 2021 quarantine project right here, So cool
I hope you let us know how it comes out!😁
Very cool! And even pretty doable. I'd love to see it fire something a little more... suitable, like a small ball/rock or something with fletching.
At some point I just expect someone going "so they built an x to defend against monkeys, so we're building a nuke" 😂
They STARTED..... Monkeys finish 🤣
@@SkillTree Hahaha indeed we do! Love your work by the way 😁
@@jakekland9250 thanks for thw love! I really appreciate the support!
Natural progression from shield to siege weapons if you ask me. Oh, and I think you were looking for the word ‘torsion’ about the wound up ropes :)
But great job dude!
Thanks, RR!
Guy, I am so happy that I found you. I must build this.
I'm happy you found us too!😁. Thanks for being part of the Fam!
The largest issue with your bolt is that it is too heavy, just not overall. You have too much weight on the front of the bolt, which makes the front dip down before it should. Removing some of the metal from the front would work but making a longer bolt (about 2 or 3 feet longer) would fix the issue and give a more stable flight. The bolt would stick out the end of the ballista, which is actually correct as most bolts were longer than the ballista they were fired from.
The capstans could be made to hold themselves with a hole drilled through the pipe and into the wood that a bolt or pin is then pushed through to hold them in place. this would remove the need for the wood pieces and let you turn the ropes a lot more. A longer torque bar would also help.
I'm sorry for being the guy that just comes on and complains but I really want to see how strong this really is!
Good tips! I will take the time to make a nicer one!
Frankly you could make the same ratchet for your capstans as you used for the drawing winch, with the addition of a mechanism to disengage the pawl when you want to remove the tension from the arms for storage. That would let you wind it and it would latch itself without you having to fiddle with anything.
If I build this I wanna modify it slightly to make a kinda clip so when I pull the string back the next bolt just falls in.
The hobbit trashing is unnecessary sir! Besides, it wasnt bard, it was his ancestor that fired the bolt thrower. Bard used a long bow
Dear gods.... you are correct. I am humbled
As always an amazing video and a fun idea with the ballista even though you will have to excuse me if I do not make one since I do not have a ton of space at home ;P though a great option if I ever buy a fortress
Lol. Maybe just crossbows for now?
Great video. Just a hint/suggestion, they had a lever on the keeper, it released the winch tension, firing the bolt. Also funny thing that bolt you used, that's basically a pilium. A Roman hand weapon that would be used either for thrusting or throwing to force the enemies sheild out of position as the head would bend and weigh down the sheild. Though the had barbed heads so it couldn't be pulled out.
I thought about using the keeper as my trigger but I A. Didn't want the drag slowing down the release and B. Didn't want to break the poplar dowel I used.
that good sir is NOT a pilum, if anything it looks like a goedendag
@@fanert1 to be fair, I said basically, in that it's doing what a pilium would do, and it doesn't look all that much like a combination spear/club to me. Mind you we can each have our own impressions of what weapon it looks like. But given that it appeared to bend once in the shield (which is what a pilium did) which a goedendag normally shouldn't be doing, I hope you can understand why I reference the pilium. :D
I might even build one for my Larp group.
can you make a materials list and post it in the Description
Amazing. I love your ideas.
If you still have the diagram, could you please attach a link to it, as I am having trouble finding one like it
Dude on the little lock thing keeping the gear in place just put a lever on that and then when you wanna fire the Bista, grab the lever and pull it back and it’ll let go of the gear and I’ll shoot the arrow forward
Oh my gosh! You took my recommendation!
It may take me a while but I DO try and take the requests!😁
lol my dude just want to point out before I continue the video that you wrote woodwprking at 1:35, just a funny point ;P (Edit: I now saw that you wrote about it in the comments lmao)
Why not using the same gear keeper sistem you used to draw the balista to twist the ropes that powers the balista insted of the pipes?
It may make it easier to increase or decrease the tension you want It to have for each shot.
1) more outdoor videos plz 😉
2)now, as you are so good in leatherwork, build samurai armor set 👍
"yo maximus, check out this tutorial"
Bring on the Monkey Army!!!! And thanks to your earlier vids we can have archers too. Cool video. Anything worth doing is worth over doing.
Agreed! Go big or be under siege from the monkey army!
Nylon stretches *a lot*.
Kevlar or Dyneema rope would be much better and stronger.
Hello, new subscriber and technical pacifist here. I have a quick question. If this ballista were to be repurposed as a "lakeside beverage delivery device", what is the average distance you could fire a can of pop/beer? and could you send a hot dog and fries boatside as well?
great vid cl3ver as always i dont wanna be that guy but check the spelling of woodworking in you level bar
Yeah, I mentioned it in the pinned coment above. Im gonna chalk it up to post surger meds and lackbof sleep😅
Imagine putting a giant match head on the top and having it hit a scratch pad on the way out, or packing a tip with explosives that ignites on contact.
Everyone has one friend who does something like this on a smaller scale
Subscribed over the home depot catch line 😆
Now that Home Depot sells claymores, it's only a matter of time until we get siege weapons!
So you talked about building a cannon at the end, you can build a weak wooden out of a log, like Myth busters did that one time.
Your T-shirt is lovely 😍
All about the trash pandas!
Yeeeeeees, fear the monkey army. 😈
Am I the only person thinking that in the next year we will be seeing a build your own castle video
Castle Cl3ver🤔... I LOVE IT!
Add a few electronics and boom......home defense! 🙂
It's not tension it's torsion. Not a common word and not taught in simple machines like the others. But essentially its a torsion powered lever.
I love the murmuring about the hobbit movies not being very good. Personally, as a fan of the book, I agree, they were horrible... There was enough going on in the book, they didn't need to add all the extra stuff that turned out to be mostly garbage, and leave out half the interesting details that the book included (like how the thrush could speak to Bard the Bowman and tell him Smaug's weakness, meaning that Bard was descended from the old human king's of the area, as it was known they could speak to the thrush. Imo, that would have been a far more interesting story than some kind of special arrow...)
Agreed! And there were zero stakes thanks to the cartoonish amounts of damage everyone took. The LOTR movies felt way more "realistic" that way.
In future make sure you load the bolt first before un winching it. If something did happen it could dismember you. One simple change and it's much safer :)
1:31 I just realized that your skill says “Woodprking” lol
Where can u find that picture of the gear and keeper
Could u please put the link to that winch picture somewhere as I want to build a mini ballista
I just google image searched "ratchet drawing". A bunch of images of the character from ratchet and clank will show up but the drawing I used still shows up on the second line of images for me.

@@SkillTree Thx that is really helpful. Btw do u have any suggestions if I want to make the ballista more automatic i e the part u have to manually switch the hook and let the block with the stick to hold the string

Siege tower next?
The neighbors will never be able to stop me!
now make black powder bolts!!
Yo best video so far
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed 😁
Good job leveling up your Woodwprking.
What is the furthest distance your ballista shoots/how far it goes? #dadgoals
What was the total cost?
All told, it was around $200
Too cool
👍👍👍👍
i think some magic weaponry would be better
Se tivesse o desenho do modelo na descriçao eu até curtiria mas não tem
This shall put fear in the hearts of those supermarket barbarians who what to horde all the toilet paper.
nice typo in the badge 🤣🤣🤣
About how much did everything cost?
The entire project set me back about $130. The ropes were the most expensive bit for me.
Right, next time the zombies invade, you're on my team!!! (Or I'm on yours)
We shall survive the hord and gather survivors to rebuild society!
Now thats cool XD
Thanks!
Haha... woodwprking
I know! What a dope!
Wow those guys don't stand a chance, and seriously talk about overkill what did you do, like all the side quest before going to the first boss hahaha, I hope he had a good plan to deal with this and by that I mean a good escape plan
Someone Pleeeaaaassssseeeee Tell Me This Guy Doesn't Look Like Ryan Reynolds
It's my secret identity. Hi, I am actor and host of skill tree, Ryan Reynolds. Thanks for stopping by.
cool
Well this ain't cuatro Sylvester
You are very strange....lol. Nice siege weapon!!!!
You would be a great Mythbuster
make a crossbow
I got you. czcams.com/video/zZieSnVqdJY/video.html
OK if you want to canon go back to Home Depot galvanized pipe 1 inch diameter about 2-4 feet long end cap drill bit 1/8 black powder wad/papper ammo ammo must be slightly smaller the the diamiter of the pipe but not to small to small ammo bounces around in barrel and messes up the shot screw together cap and pipe .25” in front of cap drill hole in side dont go throw bolth side just one side put powder in back end wit cap ammo then wad pack down put can in stand or ground aim put fire in the hole u drilled then it gose off now if u want less charge use smaller pipe Diameter or move the whole backwards so you can you can only hold so much of a charge I do suggest making a canon lighter stick it’s usually a 5 foot pole with a T on it the top holding a little quick so you can stand away from the Canon and light it
I enjoyed watching who doesn’t enjoy a good mid evil war

Woodwprking? Lol
🤣 I KNOW! I was so mad that I missed that. I am half tempted to just roll with it and make Woodwprking a topic going forward. Or just invest some time into the "typing" skill.
Nice nobody will stand a chance against us ⚡🐵🗡
We shall conquor and plant our skill trees all around the world!
I always heard it pronounced skayn
Home Depot is the best store ever, am I right?
Repurposing things that served a completely different task to save time for a project isn't lazy; this is especially the case if the designed function isn't inherently changed.
It's CL3VER.
😅 you make a valid point!
So it's confirmed, he's leveling up towards transhumanity and going to craft a railgun in his basement. Cool, just gonna go worry about humanity for a sec then watch another episode.
Hire a lazy person to do a hard job and he'll find the easiest way to do it
nylon rope has too much stretch. not suitable
Make one that will shoot through 3 adult deer and we will talk

great build, unbearable delivery

Annoying!

Did you seriously say that the hobbit movies are horrible movies, and also pronounce “Smaug” like “smog”? That’s some freakish behavior, you might get cancelled. lol I’m joking btw, but not about the hobbit movies, those are enjoyable to watch
You have 148k subs, even if only 10% of us have the tools and ambition, that’ll be almost 15k builds
