Could you publish the rough measurements between grommets?
you might want to get some of the silicone impregnated fabric sewn into the front of the tent as a way to close it up if heavy rain starts. that opening in the front is going to be bad if heavy rain comes
FUNFACT: the reason Naphtha is "The most flammable thing you've ever seen in your life" as you put it, is because it is a very vaporous, petroleum based hydrocarbon fuel that falls somewhere between benzine and gasoline if you wanna get into all the technicals. it's essentially what's commonly sold as "Coleman's Camp Fuel", which is what Fire Eaters use as fuel for their torches, and the vapors are what allow them to do those cool tricks like lighting their tongue on fire or holding a flame in the mouth and passing it to another torch.

The way this channel is going; I half expect there to be a two-month hiatus only for you to return having wandered into the backwoods with the chefs crates, the staff of the wanderer, and now this backpack and living in the wilderness for that whole time. Honestly, that as a weekend trip would be an awesome video in its own right.

With the way the tarp folds up, it's a cool opportunity to add a cool design to the outward facing circle so that when it's in backpack mode you have this cool symbol/crest. Imagine being part of a guild while out on adventure and some brigands spot you from their hiding spot along the road, but they then see your crest and quietly sheath their weapons, backing away in fear--they know if they attack you, retribution will be swift. ;)

I think anyone who complains about your energy and enthusiasm really needs to check themselves. Your passion is a huge part of what attracts people to your channel, and it is truly inspiring to me as someone who lacks a lot of self-confidence.. and confidence in general. Your builds are always explained in a way that's easy to understand, and makes them super accessible to a wide array of skill levels.

For a better weight distribution while using as a backpack, I might recommend suspending the pack from the top member of the frame, rather than resting it on the bottom shelf. Then you could put the blanket on the bottom shelf (possibly wrapped in the ground cover cloth) and it will move less when you walk.
That and weave a net around the shelf and the back, for better airflow because as is, it's going to make you very, very sweaty, and as a bonus for hanging stuff on. the backpack frame also needs a waist strap for better support and to keep it close to your back and to allow your hips to carry more of the weight
@@MrTrilbe good points. It's been a while since I have even thought about my external frame pack, but it's the only thing I would take with me in a situation that calls for a frame of any sort ..
@@davidlfort as it is now, with the way he has it, there's the balance issues from all the weight being on his shoulders, turning it into a pendulum, throwing off his balance and the possibility of a back injury, a nice 1-2 inch leather belt, with the frame on the outside of that will do the trick, also a nice opportunity to do some leather tooling too
@@MrTrilbe it should also be easy enough to attach said belt the same way he did the shoulder straps, to the bottom shelf portion of the frame.
On presentation: screw the people saying too energetic. It's nice having an excited, engaged host. As a theater major, I appreciate both your energy, and your acting! I actually thought you must've been a theater kid with your energy lmao :D I actually found this channel not too long ago looking for something else entirely. Thanks for the great tutorials and excellent vibes!
I enjoy the energy. It can get rough with tutorial videos being quiet or monotone so I think you do a good job. Plus the content is interesting and imaginative
The only problem I have is that the opening of the tent is a bit big. If the rain falls in the right direction, it WILL get in the tent (also the wind and all sorts of critters could get in and make the night less pleasant). So make sure you can fully close it. One more thing, the leaves can be a good free insolation from the cold (and possibly wet) ground so don't hesitate to put a small layer underneath the bed tarp. It's not the most comfy but the cold ground isn't really better.
There are a lot of ways to set up a 9x9 tarp to keep out the weather on worse days, So i would say that part is still practical
Although while setting up the tent all your gear would be exposed because, hey, that's your bag
This is an awesome idea. Props to whoever suggested it and props to you for pulling it off so well! It's like a step between ultralight bushcrafting and the giant tent you made for Reckoning! If you're not careful you might end up with a whole campsite of tents at this rate! XD
For a more "medieval" approach to waterproofing one could go with linseed oil and tar.

@@SkillTree having ruck marched a couple of times, if you add a chest strap as well as shoulder sinch straps at the top it will help distribute weight a little more.
I want to say that your energy and love for your craft is what makes your videos enjoyable to me. It's contageous and makes me want to go out and make stuff. Don't let anyone change your love for what you do, because I think the channel would lose it's spark without is. Same goes for edditor, we love you both as you are.

Hey Cl3ver! May i suggest adding a loop to the top (on outside of fabric at the tip of centerpole spot) and you can use rope to suspend the fabric from a tree and avoid needing to break down the whole frame for the centerpole and give you more space? Not for all the time, but maybe for when you really wanna get out of the rain quick or temporarily out of the rain until the pole is ready to be put up? Just a suggestion to help the build!
On that note, having a separate outer bag with a divider is a good idea. Leaving all your gear on the wet ground while you tear down the (wet) tent to fold it into the (wet) bag that you load everything (now also wet) into is going to suck. Depending on where you camp, EVERYTHING is wet ALL THE TIME, and it's much better to load all your (dry) things into the (dry) bag while you're still protected by the (wet) tent.
No, that WOULD be an "all the time thing" as it would give you more useable space inside the tent. With such a loop the only reason to use the pole is if you don't have a tree to hang it from.
Part of the reason I LOVE your channel is because you have energy that doesn't appear faked, a facade etc. Its like you actually enjoy and are excited by the things you are making. There is a childlike wonder that I think a lot of makers loose. A sheer joy and giddiness that gets lost somewhere as we get older. You don't and that's why I LOVE your channel.. Helps that you make all kinds of nerd,dork,DnD, etc stuff....

Incredible companion to the staff. I would love to see you do a little documentary or vlog where you use only things you have made to go on a short backpacking trip.
I know that most of the stuff you are making I realistically wouldn't use except for maybe a few times total, but regardless my inner child is screaming in joy every time I see these creations. I am literally in the middle of making this! I went for a 9'x7.5' A-frame style tent. (With doors, so it's basically a 9'x9') With the tent poles connecting into a walking stick. I've been stuck trying to figure out how to store it. I might go the backpack route, idk. Amazing job! It turned out awesome!

One thing I would recommend is waist straps. They do wonders to distribute the weight and makes carrying so much more comfortable.

I would love a follow up on this where you jazz up all the bits and bobs the way you did with your wanderer's staff. Simple camping knot instructions would go perfect carved into the tent poles, and getting everything dyed to better blend in with the woodlands would be swell.

Excellent work mate. If you don't mind , I've made a few items with this kind of tarp and have a couple of points/tips that might be helpful to others. First is to use mineral or white spirit as it is cheaper, more widely available and less noxious than that naptha sh1t (which as Ave would say has been found by the state of cancer to cause California). Add the spirit a little at a time when mixing, its just easier to blend that way. Finally do as much sewing as possible before waterproof treating, it might make hanging to dry more awkward but it gives the benifit of waterproofing your seams, especially if you are using a heavy gauge needle.
Edit: If you need to join two drop cloths together to make a lager sheet the very best method is a flat felled seam, it's the seam that is most often used as the leg out seam of jeans. Put as simply as I can.
Put the face sides of your fabric together and sew 2cm in from the edge and parallel for the entire seam.
Trim the waste on one side down to a little over 1/2 cm.
Fold the wide waste in half then pin or baste it flat to cover the narrow waste.
You will end up wit two parallel seams forming a very strong join. I get that this may sound complex but if you search flat felling on CZcams there are lots of good examples (sewing parts online is very good). Happy stitching and good luck all.

Side note: watching your videos gives me tons of ideas for the Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop I am involved in. This backpack especially, for when they need to pack light but still have what they need. Combine this with the travelling chef's box, or two or three, and you have the perfect weekend campout!

This is such a gold mine of good ideas, i don't even
EDIT: I just thought about it, but you can just as easily use PVC fittings if brass fittings are too expensive where you live or if you can't find them, and then you can just customize how they look using spray paint, super easily. There's a bunch of techniques to make metallic spray paint to look like old worn metal, too, so if you're into that look it's super easy to do it that way. If you use PVC fittings you can use Polyurethane Glue to hold the fittings to the wood instead or in addition to the nail-rivet technique you showed. In fact, you can probably build this whole backpack assembly out of PVC pipe and fittings, and customize the whole thing to look exactly how you want it to! Plus PVC is super cheap everywhere around the world(AFAIK), while wooden dowels might not be. So, just another really great option. This is extremely modular and customizable! Such great ideas. Plus if you just use PVC and PVC Cement you can do the whole thing without using any power tools, drills or hammers.
PVC would probably weigh less too♥
Also if the PVC is properly sealed it would make the whole thing float meaning you essentially have a raft you can pull the bag along if swimming or wading a river.

I'm trying to think how you could add a separate door flap to this for when its raining really hard.
Perhaps a smaller tarp that ties onto the 2 guy line connection points, and goes higher up to be pinned by the pole or tied around it, then could be pegged out at the front.
Could just remove a peg to pull a corner up and enter. Or tie to the peg points at the front.
Once again, well done sir! And with that project completed, we are one step closer to the viking/medieval camp out!

Only think I would change is the ground layer matching the tent size, maybe circular with a slit down the middle to go around the support beam. Love the inspired processes you unfold inspiring even more ideas from these.
Great suggestion. I assume he used the cut-off fabric from the tarp as a ground cover for the convenience. If the setup proves out, improvements will be a natural occurrence.
I would love to see more projects for fantasy items that could be EDC as well. Pouches, tools, clothing, accessories, etc.

The naptha is just a solvent to make impregnation easier. It should evaporate away. Unless you mean the silicone

I gotta know... What was the theory of the plastic bag in the first place? You said it was for mixing purposes, but... Bucket and stick? Seemed to work just fine!
I 5hought being able to kneed it would help it break down a little better. The stick worked OK but the silicone likes to stick to it and not break down as easily

There are three changes that I would make.
First the sliding connector. Make it long enough that it can cover the holes that are already in the "tent pole" and put holes in it. Then you can use the springs to hold it in place in case it wears over time. It would also help prevent you from losing the springs.
Second would be a waist strap to help keep the weight off of your shoulders. And you could add some extra strapping so that it was available if you wanted to connect to the two D rings that you put up at the top to go across your chest.
Third you could add a lightweight sleeping bag that can go at the top of the back pack. Even in the summer it could act as a pillow.
Great ideas and execution.

Hi! I think it's really cool that you asked about your presentation style! I'm an erstwhile performer and someone with sensory issues and I love your videos, but I've definitely had issues watching more than one of your videos in a row, sometimes having to take a break in the middle of one, which is absolute shame bc I think you and your work are great!
Your energy is wonderful! I think it's vm a part of the character of your 'show', I wouldn't change that at all. But your phrasing/intonation, which seems to have improved over time so you probably know this, but it's been repetitive at times. You have a fun, characterful cadence, but that sort of thing can definitely be overdone. So my one light bit of advice is to play more with the phrasing and intonation. Treat those buildups with the growly finish like a special treat!
It's for my sensory issues that I'd beg you to hold back the yelling. Mind you, it's 100% a thing I share, absolutely no idea why I struggle ao much not to yell at the microphone. But not only is it bad for our voices, it has an effect on the recording too. I'm not an audio engineer, so I can't exactly describe the difference, but I know that my ears can feel it and it wipes me out, quite literally. In editing my own audio, I've noticed it's easier to equalise when I yell less, and there's less clipping. That's the one thing I think you can definitely get a huge improvement on, if you try nothing else, but as I said, I'm absolutely shit at not doing it too! 🤷
Anyway, keep doing such great work! I don't need any more crafting skills, but heck if you don't persuade me to get into leatherworking! How about some trying out some weaving or braiding some time?

Honesty the ones where you get more hyper and completely nerd out are the most fun to watch because you're obviously having fun and enjoying it.
