Zhou is actually the best choice for Alpha.
Next year they will have Bottas to help the engineer build the best car they can.
Zhou will bring the money to support more of the team.
For such a new reg for 2022 making a good car first year is very likely to be very important.
We like to see pilots as only the best of the best but on this one picking Zhou is the best for all the team i think.

Gio is a very talented driver there's no doubt, he nearly won GP2 title on his rookie season, he pushed Gasly, the eventual champ, to his limit. That's why he was snapped up by Ferrari as a bright prospect. However, we were all baffled by his struggle to get grips with F1 environment, even after 3 seasons. But he's a very likeable guy like Albon so he'll be alright for his next chapter.
Perez although debuted as a pay driver showed incredible potential right from his very first race in F1 I remember he finished within points without pitting. Yes it was Bridgestone tyre years but nevertheless only few drivers managed to last that long, and one of those who did was Sergio.

    • @McLarenMercedes
      @McLarenMercedes Před 2 lety +1

Perez has remained on the "potential" level for too long now. For starters he's a lousy qualifier who holds the record of most races without ever being on pole (215) and also holds the record of most starts needed before winning the first race (190). Considering that most races are won from the first row one can say with a reasonable level of certainty that the former record explains the latter record.
As for Gio. He *is* a very likeable guy. Unfortunately he doesn't score as consistently at 27 as his veteran team mate does at 42. Last year I predicted he would be bound for Ferrari... as their next Italian test driver. There are tons of talented drivers in GP2/F2 who look really promising both whose careers in F1 simply never take off. Gio is just another one in the line. Fortunately for Gio he is still young enough to have a career in other forms of racing. Fact is he'd probably be better off.

Ilott made much more mistakes in 2020 like spinning in silverstone and hitting daruvala in bahrain. If u count up the points zhou and ilott lost due to poor luck both would have been the same. Latifi took 4.5 years including the gp2 years to be p2 in f2 while zhou took 3. And even so the guy who beat latifi is nothing compared the guy who is beating zhou, thats y i think zhou is better than latifi, and is pretty much same as ilott, but richer. He managed to come 4th in F2 in 2018 with two extra retirements compared to Lando who finished second, so Latifi did well to finish second, still agree that Zhou is better, his recent win of the F3 asia series, and performance this year in a Uni-Virtuosi car which may not even be a top 3 car on the grid, with the carlins and hitechs looking better, to be second is a MASSIVE achievement and he well could be winning the championship if he was in a better car.

There's so many people saying he's a pay driver, nothing more nothing less, and that he doesn't deserve his seat. Come on people, give him a chance! Of course the money part is probably what made Alfa look in his direction, but I think he is a competent driver. He's going to have a huge learning curve, and Valtteri likely will thrash him in the head to head stats, but Guanyu should be given a shot to showcase his race craft in F1. Give Guanyu a chance!!! And if other drivers miss out because they don't bring financial backing, than tough cheese. At the risk of going off on a tangent, you can't make it in racing on just ability alone in modern racing, particularly when just starting out. All aspiring drivers of the future should ensure that alongside developing their racing skills, they need to secure healthy enough financial backing to help them along their careers from karting to junior series to the big leagues. 1:52 it is basically what happened to him, others excuse drivers like bottas underperforming against drivers like hamilton because "they are just not on the same level" and claim that it would be fine.
kimi by no means was suddently slow just because of his age, look at drivers like alonso or again, hamilton... age does not matter that much in f1, athletes like tom brady for example can stay in great form despite their age.
ilott got robbed as well, as did guys like magnussen, grosjean and others like ocon back in the days of his force india / racing point days.
giovinazzi as well as kimi couldn't do much, despite their experience and talent.
i'm convinced they could have fought the top easily with a halfway decent car.
zhou isn't bad, but stating f1 is still "the peak of motorsport" then it may be like this because of the cars, not the calibre of the drivers and even if people want to disagree, you know it's true.
i get that guys like you, that are doing f1 content like this background stuff because it makes it easier for you to create content, but as a fan since the early 2000 years, who since then enjoyed racing of talented drivers instead of guys paying money to be on the grid.
i'll leave you with a small and spontanious thought here, turn it any possible way you want, f1 is not about real, fair and peak competition anymore - just imagine ayrton senna back in his early years would have been as talented as he obviously was, but would have never gotten a chance in f1 because he lacked outraging amount of money...
it's just my opinion and it's ok if you disagree with my point of view, but i probably wont watch f1 actively from next year on, because this kinda stuff ruins my memories of the old days, when driving skills and hard working teams still got rewarded.

However, from what I’ve seen, Guanyu is not trash. Its taken a few more years than some would have liked, but he’s finally found his mojo in 2021. F3 Asia champion and runner-up in F2 at the moment. Plus, having another Asian driver backs up F1’s claim to being an “international sport”.
People need to remember that every racing driver comes form some degree of sponsorship, even fan favourites. Mick has 1&1, Carlos has Estrella Galicia beer and Checo pretty much has the biggest Mexican companies behind him. Guanyu will have a great mentor in Bottas and with a fresh driver lineup, I hope Alfa will be on to better things moving forward.

Oscar is the better driver, hands down. But Zhou is a good interim for 2022 and maybe even 2023, as Alfa Romeo/Sauber are definitely going to promote Theo Pourchaire at some point in the coming years. Have Zhou, and his money, help to build a package that can give a talent like Pourchaire the potential to fight in the future.
On a side note, Piastri being an Alpine reserve might not be the worst option. To learn from a man like Fernando Alonso is an opportunity that can only improve his integration into Formula 1. Plus, there's no doubt that Alpine are going to have him replace Alonso when the latter chooses to retire, so it let's him understand the procedures of the team before having to deal with the additional pressures of competing as well. He can always race in other series in 2022 ( a la Albon in DTM) on the side to keep his racecraft from going stale.
