    First broadcast: 25 Jul 2012.
    Episode 1/3 For the very first civilisations and also our own, the yellow lustre of gold is the most alluring and intoxicating colour of all. From the midst of pre-history to a bunker deep beneath the Bank of England, Dr James Fox reveals how golden treasures made across the ages reflect everything we have held as sacred.

    A very unique and compelling "colour" lens to look at art history through - and to reveal the story through time of each. Such powerful storyline and hitting visuals, it's hard to look at the world the same after walking away from documentaries such as these.

    Excellent!!! I watched this on TV a few years back and my friends laughed at me about it. I find it sooo interesting.

      I trust you've left those "friends" behind . . . and remained true to yourself (even if friendless) . . .

      Funny you ask because yes, I have!!! Did a friend audit and cull a few years back. Hehe. What a nice comment from you!

      It wasn't obvious that you'd become what you're capable of becoming . . . by leaving them behind. It was only obvious that you wouldn't become it . . . if you didn't leave them behind. Good luck with it going forward . . . (!)

    He did a documentary on Cornwall (just came back a few weeks ago-I adore it there but not sure if I will be able to go again!) and I would just love to see that. Is there anyway you can find it and upload it? I loved these, and I also saw an exhibit, "Making Color" at the National Gallery that tied into this subject, "Blue," especially.

      I spent most of my time in St Ives, which I understand is significantly represented in the documentary, I also had gone the previous year to Lamorna Cove and the exhibit on those artists at the Penlee Gallery in Penzance.

    Nothing like gold but the sun? That's what a man trying to sell you iron pyrite says.
    But seriously, amber (aka Bernstein) has been associated with gold and the sun for thousands of years. A strong enough association that the Egyptians went through great efforts to obtain it from the very far away and very cold and dark shores of the Baltic sea.

    Great! - I enjoyed viewing the vid. But that on my equipment the sound seemed to have some interference - could be me though! I know we have only some differences and I like this approach u have. When you can spare the time please examine the appropriate videos on my channel (playlists will help) and tell me your views. Any constructive criticism gratefully recieved! Have Fun!

      The limited work I've done in sound recordings leads me to think it might be because a room with that much reverb is a nightmare to record in, a place with the acoustics of a garbage can. I imagine the sound recorder saying, "Dr. Fox, if you want to be heard at all, hold the volume down as much as you can. This place is like an echo chamber."
      Either that, or there's a rule against picking up solid gold bars and he didn't want to have his head blown off after announcing, "Blimey! I just HAVE to pick up one of these things - and I hope no-one can hear me!" ;)

  • @howtubeable
    @howtubeable Před 9 lety +2

    Dr. Fox looks quite sharp in his dark suit and tie; however, traipsing around the world in a dark suit is going to seem very silly in another 20 to 30 years.

      Fashions change. Who cares what will look good in 20-30 years? It's all about the now.

    • @TheStockwell
      @TheStockwell Před 7 lety +2

      No offense, but nothing dates a documentary as fast as a presenter in hip "now" clothing. A suit and tie is a classic look. Whatever you're seeing on the street today isn't. Jacob Bronowski and Kenneth Clarke look contemporary decades later, but James "Connections" Burke's ABBA-infused clothing, which was hip back then makes you think "Is that what people REALLY thought looked good in 1978? EgadI Didn't they have dark suits and ties back then!" ;)
