The only defining characteristic of socialism when it comes to the free market, is that it is regulated by the choice of the people for the benefit of the people. This is done for the purpose of eliminating exploitation, corruption and dangerous concentration of power... all of which are enormous downsides of capitalism which they really dont like to talk about.
Once you realise that true socialism is almost identical to capitalism minus all the really nasty stuff you start to understand why it is such a massive threat to the top few percent of the worlds population, and just how much power they really have to be able to prevent it from happening for so long.
The illusion of capitalism requires constant lies and maintenance of narrative of what both systems "are", it can not survive in the sunlight and strives relentlessly to control perception in order to survive.. takes credit for all human successes and no responsibility for its colossal failures.

      holodomor,
      "the great leap forward",
      "gulag",
the current concentration camps in china,
entire cities flooded because the dear leaders wanted to protect other cities (still modern china)
tofu dreg, mass theft by people that bribed the communist local leaders (again modern china) like banks that do not give the $ to the people that deposited, or construction companies that do not deliver the buildings at all
people locked up in their own homes during covid (some died in fires) and (surprise!) others heavily suffered from hunger (again! china!)
      police state,
permanent hunger and no medical help (north korea).
they even managed to create a famine in venezuela, a country that was rich because of the oil, but the president was just entering mom and pop shops and just saying: this now belongs to the state.
i bet you would love to work for years, build up your mom and pop shop, then the president just waltzes in and takes it all

I agree. It’s dangerous when only one view is promoted. I know when I was in college 30 years ago I also had the hope that the world could approach a Utopia, and it’s very good for the ego to believe you are very moralistic. Maturity over time and understanding complex issues from multiple angles has taught me it will never be possible. That’s not pessimistic, just an honest fact about innate human behavior. Thomas Sowell looks at complex issues from a data driven objective view regarding the real world application of these idealistic policy changes to see if they really worked over a period of time to achieve those goals, and almost every time not only do they fail to achieve the goals, they cause more harm to the people they were meant to help in fact. Studying the real effects of Welfare on the poor is a classic example, and is a perspective that must be shown to college kids to counterbalance the heavy promotion of Marxism etc. It’s eye opening and has changed my stance on many of the current social movements.

Kid, pragmatism is what this is all about. Even freedom can be had in a perfect utopian socialist society (e.g. the universe of _Star Trek_ ), but such a thing is not pragmatic with real humans in the real world, therefore you will always lose your freedom. Even I, who was in my 20s in early 80's when none of these last 30 yrs of the many ways to make big money in the least physical ways didn't exist.
Like starting even a half decent interesting YT channel that makes 20-30k a month.
I thought working, my car, a girlfriend, and weekends at the clubs was it, and everything else would fall into place.
Until you get married, have kids and realize nothing falls into place without working towards it.😂 making it fairly unscaved from the 60s until now, I think that's a success in itself.đŸ€”đŸ˜‚

Very respectful young man. Its normal for him to feel this way at his age. Same conversation has been around for a long time. He will grow up eventually.
