- Big Green meets a fully-built 1976 Chevy K10 rock crawler. Is this what our 1985 K10 could be? (which is also for sale: denver.craigslist.org/cto/5923... )

Who else notice something in these old commercials that reminds us on some happier and better times?..
I love the old square body
Same here. New trucks have a weak, crappie body. Older trucks were better.
I love those old commercials they make me laugh so hard 😂😂😂 "you mean I don't have to get out and lock the hubs??" lol how times have changed
Nothing works like a Chevy truck! 2 old beasts still running on original engines 30-40 years later.
Dale Couture did you miss the whole "can't keep up with traffic" part?
Christmas Gummyworm they got 70s 350s in em what u expect
Not much of an issue for a "work truck," which is what these were sold as. Plus speed limits were a lot lower back then...still does a mile a minute, uphill, at 7,000' MSL.
Christmas Gummyworm The one they were driving wasn't a 350. It was a 305. 30 years old in a lifted truck with giant tires going up a hill. Of course it can't keep up! Still running though! The 350 was running strong too.
Dale Couture FORD FOR THE WIN!!!😁
Digging the excerpts from old school commercials!
waht the hell happened to commercials now? back then they made sense, with real situations and real products, now dudes are dropping toolboxes onto trucks they just built like it just doesn't make sense
Because they talk to the public consumer like their 3 years old. In the day they respected the consumers as grown up mature people that had backbone and character
Sonny DEE I totally agree..
TFL, your videos have helped MANY of us decide on our truck purchases the last couple years!! Just like he said your videos is reason he bought Tundra! AWESOME!!
This on one of my favorite TFL Truck videos yet and I've been subscribed for about a year and a half
The production values and content on your videos keep getting better and better. It's cool to look back on old videos and see how far you guys have come in just a few short years. Keep up the great work, TFL crew! Hands down, best car and truck review channel on CZcams.
p.s. we are going through ike gauntlet withdrawals!
I just bought a 1975 GMC square body and I love it.
For whoever did those extremely well translated czech subtitles - You made my day mate! Feels great for a change.
hi guys, I have been watching you for quite a while now (years). When I saw this video it made me think how much TFL has evolved to become a great show. Man just look at your old vids you will be amazed how profesional you have become.
Really good job , always love it , thumbs up
i love the sense of humor, the not-taking-yourself-too-seriously plus you film in the denver area...this is my new favorite channel....
My opinion for a crate motor would be a 383 with aftermarket EFI...like Holley. A 6.0 iron block would be cool too but it'd be sweet to keep it old school with modern upgrades instead of a restomod.
The fast lane truck is always the first thing I watch on CZcams. You guys always make great videos. I'm a die hard truck guy and I can't wait to watch all your videos in 2017. Great video
+Kyle Hereygers thanks for watching and thanks for the kind words. Very much appreciated!
Go grab an 8.1l from a salvage yard. Painless makes a harness for it, pick your flavor of trans, atlas transfer case, 4.56 gears with lockers, upgrade the axles. Done.
Ricky McCafferty
How much would that set up run?
8.1, 496 with Allison Transmission, great set up. Had one, knew where all the gas stations where.
Just slap a fuel injected LS3 in big green. That white truck is nice but not 18g nice.
I would give 18k for an ls3 truck like big green
Loving all the old chevy ad clips!
I don't understand why the TFL channels doesn't have more subs! You guys have a great channel and great content!
Brilliant vid guys. I loved the old adverts.
I just wanted to say that I loved this video.
Thanks!
Great video - love the old trucks - great content!
" Nothing works like a Chevy Truck " Facts!! Man this made me miss my K5 Blazer I had back in the day. I have to find a K10 now.☺👍👍
Troycee Stone I have an 85 k10 shortbed Silverado with 2002 Corvette swap let me know if your interested
Great video...Nice and simple and to the point
Awesome video! I loved the vintage commercials!
Good stuff man... not being a previous owner of a GTI, this is helpful.
"I GOT A TUNDRA" what a classic lol!
jmoo72 He's a smart man
Y'all should give it a fuel injected 350 or 383.
Love the style of this video
I love your channel! You guys are a bunch of fun to watch!
best video by far 👍👍👍 love tfltruck !
Thank you!
Some of Romans best work. I liked it well enough to put it on FB.
T Ritchie I agree
i tried looking up the ad you used in the intro of this video, found nothing like it, may i have the link if you can find it?
you guys should start doing rig walkaround videos like this!
my 86 used to have the same setup, 305 + sm465 + np208, replaced all that because it was not up to snuff any longer, still a great drive train for putting around, but not keeping up with modern rigs.
It'd be pretty sweet to put a standalone 6.0 or 6.2 LS in this gorgeous truck! Bulletproof bottom end, huge aftermarket supply, and they're easy to find at a great price
I've said it once and I will say it again: a junkyard 5.3 swap is the answer! You can make crazy hp out of the stock engine components and the entire trucks sell around here for a dime a dozen. I voted for the LS3 on your website though.
a 383 9:1 with 180cc afr heads and a small cam is perfect for that truck. but, free motor from gm would mean getting a crate 6.0 or 6.2
Put a 454 or 572 just something big block and with a carb or maybe if u got the money a 12v cummins
I wouldn't feed a stock K10 that much jam without upgrading the running gear. All that horsepower, start crumpling Corporate 10-bolt axle shafts. I think they're looking to swap the engine only.
Wow I was on Craigslist the other day and I looked at that exact truck and next thing you know it's on their video
We ran into Adam and that K10 in Moab on Poison Spider a year-and-a-half ago. It is one mean rig!
Love it!.. you guys are the best!
awesome one guys!
Unless there is something really wrong with the stock engine I would just rebuild it. Maybe add a turbo for those uphill climbs. I think it's the gearing that is the main problem, those tires are not stock. My f-150 had the 4.9l strait 6, it would go fast uphills in 3rd gear with stock tire size.
TFL, first off, great channel. I'm a recent subscriber since I kept finding your videos consistently enjoyable to watch. Could you tell me where you get the music for your videos? Always seems like a good match for the content of the video.
adam was right about the front end configuration! I have an 80 k10 I'm building with an ls engine and in 80, they have the square headlights and the round headlights..... I think Scottsdale, which i have, was the only one that came with round 7"headlights and 2 different grille options...... they are a mystery body style.... I have a k10 which is a half Ton, with 3/4 ton springs, 3/4 Tom axels that are configured for 6 lug, the ls6 350 which is a 4bolt main with hydrolic roller rockers from factory, the th350 and an np205 tcase... also the front axel is a dana 44 which is a rare option in 80 bc they stopped really putting them in since 78 but a special option they were (from what i was told from gm heritage) the factory 10bolt front axle is the exact same thing as the Dana 44 just the gm product but thwy are interchangeable parts wise depending on your axles and gears!!!!! They are great trucks and a lot of potential.... I love straight axles and had them in all my trucks and so did my dad...... the hearing sucks especially since I have 3.08 so i can be doing 75 but the engine is running at 4k rpms lol but shes a good truck...... beat up and old and smoked a ton and leaks every fluid except gas.... only reason why it does leak gas is because she uses it before it even leaks lol I love you truck though looking forward for the build.... like the old body style better.... also, with a 73-80 c/k102030, the hood bows in the center which they are notorious for but they make good braces at LMCTRUCK to keep it from doing it in the future....... If you if need a repair manual from 1980 let me know and ill see if i can post the link.... it literally shows yoy how to diagnose everything from each pin on the electrical to the torque spec on the carb bolts!!!!!!
I have a 1977 c20 with the 454. It's the blue/white two tone paint with the gold paint inside the trim. I wish it looked like Big Green!
Your best vid ever! Awesome. Time for a TV show on Discovery Channel. And... Chevy forever!!!
I think a 383 stroker would be great in the truck
People are just yelling out swaps that are so commonplace or the absolute biggest and most expensive engines they can think of. *"DROP A LSX IN THERE!! NO WAIT, MAKE THAT A 572 BIG BLOCK!! YEAH!!!"* And honestly, anything you really could put in there is something we've probably already thought of or have seen a 1,000,000x over. How about putting in something we aren't expecting?
Thanks for the feedback. You have a point there.
3.5l Ecoboost!
292 I6 built for tons of low end torque.
I say find a 500 cadillac. they are torque monster stock
detroit 453t,or a cummins 4bt,maybe even a perkins, but the truck is great how it is,why mess with it? 305's suck, but if it's working and running let her be,there are plenty of destroyed modified k-10,and 20's out there.
Would that crate engine diesel in Tube Sock from Dirt Everyday provide enough power for the K10?
I'm just curious but do the heavy duty fords still have manual locking hubs? I thought I saw one of the new ones and it looked like it still did.
carguy638 they're auto or manually lockable.
What app are you using that shows altitude and speed?
the big problem is that your under geared im guessing. with 35 and the 4 speed you need atleast 4.10s
have you guys regeared the differentials?
what wheel do you put on it?
Brand size wheel?
Does the white chevy have a reinforced frame behind the steering box?
this truck is actually on my build list. I would put an ls7 or ls9 in it with a zf s6-650 with a 205 tcase. great power, reliable, and wonderful off-road.
2 Choices. #1 With 461 horsepower and 558 lb-ft of torque, our 502 HO crate engine has power on tap for every need - whether it’s a ’69 Chevelle at the drag strip or the Suburban that towed it there! #2 The HT502 is rated at 406 horsepower and a whopping 541 lb-ft of trailer-tugging torque. That’s more than the factory ever offered and more than you’ll get with a stock-type rebuild. It is uniquely suited to pre-1978 trucks, but is adaptable to a variety of applications.
Nice video!
Project videos are the best!
Chevy trucks 1981 had turn signals in the bumper, it was the only year in 1982 they moved them to the grill and the light configuration was determined by trim level, the higher trims had 4 head lights apposed to the two light setups . I would put a low compression 350 in with a turbo for your altitude.
Turns signals were in the bumper in '82 also. Wasn't a one year thing. They weren't moved to the grill (on quad light models) or below the headlights (single headlight models) until '83.
What kind of rims are on the white k10
I'm a Ford guy, but that's a nice truck. Worth what he's asking also!
Where did you find that comercial? I can never find it!
only 81 and 82 had the turn signal/running lamps in the bumper. 83-87 trucks, they were moved behind the grill or under the headlights in later models
My buddy had an 87' with a 12v Cummins swapped that he got at an auction for $2500. That thing was an absolute beast (besides the electrical issues from the jerry rigged swap haha). But for simplicity and reliability I would suggest vortec 350.
Great video. Just put the standard LS3 crate engine in it.
Ram Jet 350. Affordable crate engine with decent power. Modern fuel system/electronics but keeps the classic look. Inexpensive to swap as well.
LS all the way! I've got one in my swb k1500 '84 and it's brought old grey back from the dead! It's only an LM7 but it's hard to keep the rear from swapping ends.
I had an 89 chevy station wagon with a 305 in it. As the compression started to go so did the hill climbing ability on the highway. Look out the piston compression could be going bye bye with the power.
My 87 had the TBI 350 and a Hypertech chip with no mufflers and dual pipes after the cat. It never lacked for power, and it sounded great! It would break over the 35s even though it only had 3.42s, although that was always a bad idea in a 200,000 mile 10-bolt that would grenade the spider gears every few years. The 1987 TBI setup was good for an additional 50 HP over the carbureted from the previous years, but the Cold War-era OBD system wasn't particularly adept at giving you useful codes when things started going wrong. I think you should just build a mild 350 for the truck and use a modern aftermarket OBD2 fuel injection solution. You'll have the best of both worlds: a bolt-in engine, built of affordable, common parts, that plays good with modern scan tools.
I have an 86 GMC Sierra and it came with a 305 Gutless for sure, had to upgrade to a 350 which made a huge difference
I wanna see more Big green and that commercial! I can't find that commercial anywhere...
What app was that Andre was using for the speed? It looks real good.
If I was in the market that thing is bad ass! I'm pretty close by too.
One of my fav trucks ! 💯
What gear are you running?
I have no idea why I keep watching these videos. Every time I get my hopes up that it's not gonna be shit... and every time I'm let down.
I have a 396 BBC in my k20 with Dana 60 up front an 14 bolt rear built turbo 400 an 205 transfer case with a 10 inch lift on 44 but truck was built for mud so needs interior but I'm 15 an was a project I wanted an plan on fully restoring it in my 20's can't beat them old square body's
Do the Cummins conversion, I have a 85 GMC K3500 that needs one too! Would love to see what you do with it.
My dad restored his 70's GMC 3/4 ton long bed stepside after deer hunting on the interstate. 35" tires with 6" of body lift plus 4" in the suspension, even with the stock 350 it'll drive through or over any damn thing that gets in it's way! Funny enough he also calls it Big Green 😊
I'd consider an LS2 with a carbureted intake.
460HP!
Easy installation.
Another option would be a LSX 454.
Perhaps a 5.3 crate engine?
Great power and torque, with some good gas mileage, but a more complex installation.
You can find a set of CUCV axles to back it all up for about $1,600-$2,000.
Maybe I'm just projecting my own wish list for my 1985 GMC Sierra 4X4? 🤔
great video love it!! I think they should do one with a dodge
Go 454! They sound amazing and can tow pretty well!
If you want to save money, and GM gives you a crate motor, add Edelbrock's E street EFI which is a very simplistic system that would help you guys with all the elevation changes and cold weather.
good luck on that 18k you would be lucky to get half that.
Like a rock and heartbeat were so much better but these ads are still cool.
You guys should try to find the buyer of this rig and do a follow up video on where it stands today and what mods the current owner has put into it.
What gear ratio does Big Green have. My '80 Powerwagon has 3.2ish gears. It also has the granny low first gear NP-435 transmission, turning 35" mud tires. Still running the original 360 4bbl, and the part of watching you guys bouncing around the cab, made me smile. My PW is like that, 4" lift, but it's a long bed, club cab, when my daughter was 6, her first ride in the truck, she looked at me, and said this is like riding in the back of a school bus. 15 years later I've gathered Dana 60 axles, NP-205 transfer case, and the 1 ton drive shafts. Going from 1/2 ton to 1 ton drive train. I think gear ratio is still to high, I wanted 4.10.
You've got a nice ride with the green truck the way it is, I wouldn't want to get too crazy with changes. I'd like to see a mild 350 or 383 - keep it simple and add some usable torque or top end, or maybe a 5.3 LS. too much power and you're going to wind up re-engineering the rest of the truck. Wheel hop and the strength of the half ton rear axle will become issues with too much power.
Also regarding your question about the headlights & grille. Single vs Dual headlights relates to the trim level and optioning for 81-87 trucks. Custom Deluxe trucks (base model) all came with single headlights. Scottsdale (mid-level) could have single or dual, and Silverado (loaded) all came with dual headlights. The badges are removed on your truck but some of the shots of the interior show base model optioning (door panel style & black gauge bezel), so I would guess you have a fairly original custom deluxe model. The center section of the grille is for an 85-87 truck, but grilles are easily interchangeable. You can change to dual headlights but it requires changing the front core support that the lights mount to.
Hello from Longmont!
@The Fast Lane Truck Do something that others don't. Throw a tuned Duramax/Allison in there. Even a used LBZ or something. Do it up right make it look factory under the hood. You'd have a hotrod that I haven't been able to find anywhere on CZcams. Plus everyone does big engines or Cummins swaps, dare to be different...
Excellent point sir. I was thinking the exact same thing
Actually, C/K10+ Duramax swaps aren't really anything new, quite a few people have done them. And I have no idea why you haven't seen any on YT. They are there.
***** 90 percent of the swaps are Cummins engines. No one ever said we did not see the swap. Thanks for the enlightenment.
Ruins the truck you have a simple easy to work on reliable truck, slap a POS new diesel of all things in you might as well just buy a new truck. Cummin 12v is still a SIMPLE motor that is why you see them going in...
Matt Lane nobody said they weren't reliable or cool easy. I said they're everywhere and the a Duramax would be different. If it was a Ford I would have said 6.7 power stroke, but it's a Chevy so I say newer Duramax. An 800hp twin turbo smallblock isn't as reliable as others as well but guess what, people do it anyway. Like I said in my opening comment, dare to be different.
there's a vise on the flat bed...awesome.
Entertaining video :)
still waiting to see what you guy's are going to do with this truck
I wanna upgrade from the 5.7Vortec multi port EFI engine I upgraded to 10 years ago to the newer LS1 engine and 4L60 Series trans with tow haul mode now
I have a 2014 Sierra with the 6.2L. I can't say enough good things about it. I highly recommend either the 6.2 or the 5.3.
You guys need to get the 776 horsepower off-road LS motor it is the last one is the crate section under LS I love that motor it would be great for everything all around
I have a k10 with the 454ss motor and turbo 475 transmission it has the stock Suspension with 37" tires and 20" wheels
Just found that same flatbed k10 on Craigslist
