Knives is the most lovable ex ever in any film.
Pretty in Pink gave us Ducky, who was friendzoned at the prom. The movie then revealed the highly probable situation in which a gorgeous blond saw Ducky and invited him over, so the audience is supposed to feel good for him. Lame.
The Knives character encourages Scott to follow his dream, and announces with confidence that she's ok. So that character got to show us infatuation, jealousy, resignation, and finally selfless agape.
This movie rules. All the actors nailed their parts.

I'm actually glad it didn't do that well, because now it's one of a kind. If it had been successful, there might have been a lot of lesser imitations of it that would make it feel less special. I agree it deserved to make a lot more money, but maybe it's sort of a blessing that it didn't.
I went to the movies and bought it on bluray 3 times because of 3 different covers I seen. I did my part lol wish the game could get licensed again by ubisoft
I feel like a lot of Scott Pilgrim's transitions are rooted in trying to be faithful to the comic book. I know that it takes a lot of talent to bring something like Scott Pilgrim to film. However, I feel like not comparing and contrasting the comic and film transitions is an oversight to the topic. Also, with as much as Edgar Wright is talked up in this video, I wanted to see a some other examples of his work.
Go check out the Every Frame a Painting video that Nerdwriter mentions. EFaP was created by a couple of film editors, so they come at it from a different slant, but their appreciation of Wright is similar.

I just rewatch Baby Driver and Scott Pilgrim not too long ago. I really can't understand why Wright's films aren't more commercially successful.

The scene at 4:17 was very cleverly done! The part of the house that you see Scott is walking through is simply a set, the walls of which are on wheels (include the staircase). The second Scott closes the door and beings to pee, backstage workers move the walls away and wheel in new ones that make up the school setting. Then, when he opens the door again, the set is completely different. There is footage of them doing this on the Behind the Scenes Documentary on the Scott Pilgrim vs the World DVD.

One of the best movies ever made. Sure it has flaws in the last act, since it's a bit rushed but I can watch this movie every day and still love it and always notice something I haven't before. Edgar Wright is truly one of the best directors to have ever lived
Have you read the comics? I read them before watching the movie, and as a huge Scott Pilgrim fan, and an aspiring film maker, I found the movie absolutely atrocious. The only good parts where ones that came from the comics themselves. Do yourself a favor and read them, they contain just as much (more) fun as the movie, and they have the breathing room and the much more suitable art style to do it justice.

I'd say it's less that it's an atrocious film, and more that it's just a bad adaptation. And even that isn't ENTIRELY true (seeing as how it depends on if you believe an adaptation should be loyal or stand on its own, etc.). The comic is great, and while the movie isn't as good, it isn't nearly bad enough to say it's "atrocious".

The bathroom transition was brilliant - I think it covers it on the dvd extras, but essentially, they redressed the hall in 10 seconds flat.

Scott Pilgrim is one of those movies that I can watch literally any time.
that set transition was covered in the extras. its literally the same set (for the one continuous shot ) they just flipped up some panels and carpet for the "hall way" to lead you to believe they transitioned into a new set or did a green screen effect.
funny thing is, they make the decision to do said single shot sound like a "lol why not" type decision

Awesome work on this one, Evan. This has been my favorite movie since it came out, and the transitions and art direction were always part of the reason - now I appreciate them even more.

As much as I like Ant-Man, Edgar Wright's version of Ant-Man would've been AMAZING. It probably would've gone from what I think is an 8/10, to a 10/10.

Another thing about Scott Pilgrim is that many people who love it point to it as an example of how comic book movies should be because the quick transitions and the distortion of space within the story is very much like that within a comic book. Scott Pilgrim was a movie which knew that it was based on a comic book and played with that idea. Now, I don't know if that sort of approach would work for the more serious movies based on comic books like Batman, but it does perhaps point to a way to help some movies which haven't been too successful. Perhaps one of the many problems that can hinder a comic book-based movie is that they are so often trying to fit the story and the style of the book itself into the arrangement and rigidity of a "typical" movie. I know some may take issue with this and I'm full willing to admit that I may be wrong, but it does seem like at least some of the Marvel movies have taken that advice and arranged the movie more like a comic book rather than trying to squeeze and press the comic book into the frame of a traditional movie.
My film teacher at university used the same film to examine the same subject, just a few weeks ago :)

This is so perfect. Look: the BRRRRR even runs along the denser areas of the tree branches! I just wish the movie was more like the comic: I understand the length limits, but the whole point of it was lost by the end. I mean, just look at the Shadow Scott differences as an example. In the comic, he faces who he truly is and his mistakes that he'd tried to gloss over by dissociation. In the movie, it's a joke.
Yeah, it really bothered me on that end but, I think it was done justice when he got his "self respect "sword.
The Self Respect scene covers that. The Nega Scott scene shows him literally making peace with himself.
The most impactful line and biggest insight of this whole video happens at 4:59
"Scott Pilgrim is a story about a transitionary period in the Hero's life. A period between knowing who you were and deciding who you are going to be"
THIS IS SUCH A GOOD LINE. I find that this period is so difficult in people's lives when they have no direction on who they want to be. It's so hard for my friend's that jump out of college with nothing, not do anything and ultimately push themselves to suffer with the rest of the outcasts of society.
Trying to push through this and not staying still when it happens is extremely important. In my own life, I have doubted if I was going down the right path multiple times, often ending up in depression. But making sure that I know that have something that I can do and push myself to be better at has helped me through those times. I guess that's one way of taking that, but I think people need to stop losing confidence in themselves when they have one little thing happen to them. It disheartens the people around them. If you know someone in that kind of rut, please be a good friend for them. Let them cry on your shoulder if you have to. It's not something that is going to destroy your masculinity, or hurt your social standing. If anything it creates a stronger bond with that person and hopefully you'll be able to rely on them in that sort of situation.
Editing is such a difficult art to explain and analyze, Great work! More literacy in editing helps people to appreciate it more.
One of my favorite movies. Edgar Wright is hands down my favorite director with Shaun of the Dead being his best work, at least to me.

Why is this channel so good - these videos are of the highest quality.
This video reminded me of a scene in Game of Thrones 2x03 where someone has a conversation with three different people, yet it's so cleverly edited and the transitions are so well-utilized that instead of being three different scenes for three different conversations, it's just one seamless, masterclass of a scene.
Rob Thomas's "iZombie" likes to do the same thing during sequences where the police are interrogating several people. They'll cut the interviews up into bits and then arrange them so it seems like the various witnesses\suspects are having an argument or discussion with each other, while the detectives have minimal input. It's an interesting way of handling such stock (but necessary) scenes.

Saying that the reason there are so many transitions in the film is because the film is about "a transition in Scott Pilgrim's life"... is sweet, and it sounds great to wrap up your video... but I'm positive that's not the case AT ALL. Wright most probably wanted to galvanize the adaptation adding some cinematic quality to the source material (the comic book itself). And... that's it.
Maybe you're right, but sometimes this kind of decisions happen at an unconscious level, even for the director, the whole "transition" idea.

These things remind me of the Death Note manga.. when the creators were asked about a lot of the symbolism in it, they simply brushed off all of the community's deep discussion on their implications by simply saying stuff like "I just thought it was really cool".
Genius not always comes from the mind, but by the mere chance that a person creates when allowed to present his product to an audience that has all the resources to appreciate it in levels it didn't have on its own.
Exactly -- I'm surprised Nerdwriter didn't get that -- does he really think that Wright would've inserted all those onomatopoeias if the source material hadn't been a comic book? No, Wright utilized those specific transitions, because he was trying to cinematographically capture the nature of a comic book -- much like the way Ang Lee did w/ the "Hulk" movie...
While I'd say that is extremely true for most of the film, I do actually think the part where he says the transitions make you feel what Scott is feeling, that is, "drifting through life", might still be very intentional. For instance, in the beginning the transitions in particular felt so seamless and often, it's actually a little hard to keep up at points. Like the audience is being teleported from one place to another. Especially that part where Scott is hanging out with Knives or when he went from playing the guitar, to walking down the street. In both scenes, he was very out of it and hardly interacting with anyone. As a result, in both scenes each transition seem to always be within seconds of each other. I think that at the very least was intentional since it gives us a sense of not knowing exactly what's going on, as if we weren't paying enough attention like Scott was. Especially since the only continuous thing in both of these scenes, was how Scott interacted with the world. Making it feel like we are watching the world move around him, rather than the world movie WITH him.
When my English class was watching this movie and I missed the first day:
Me: What's the film about?
Friend: Um it's hard to explain... but basically it's like it's on drugs
Me: What?

io 90 I understand where you're coming from, but I think Swiss Army Man was beautifully paced and incredible. If you consider it to be in the same world as Interesting Ball, it really makes it seem more complete to me. Hank builds this life with Many, and in the end when it's revealed that maybe he isn't crazy, I think to Interesting Ball. It makes for a bigger reveal when you realize "these things that seem impossible aren't just probable, but inevitable."
I went to Venice for 2 days on a cruise and in that time I
- Bartered with locals
- Became so incomprehensibly lost I forgot what city I was in because I had focused on how lost I was
- Had pizza that was worse then a $5 Little Caesars (Didn't know that was even possible)
- Found myself on the wrong water taxi and just barely got on my cruise liner with 5 minutes to spare
All in all, a great visit and I hope to find myself back there again

I love the transitions where Wallace is all of a sudden in the scene and then Scott is all of a sudden in a new place because to me it reminds me of when you get somewhere but you can't remember going there (either driving or walking on autopilot), showing how Scott is so inside his own head he is missing parts of his waking life

As a sound artist and electronic musician I find transitions are also what's most important in music. I find a lot of modern music has started to gain extremely formulaic transitions from one section to the next, often dictated by genre. A good track can take totally boring elements and make the spaces (or dare I say "journeys") between them fantastic.

These videos really have taught me how to appreciate cinema more, how to recognize some techniques and quality film making. I find myself enjoying some of my old favourites over again looking through entirely different lens. I wanted to work on film when i was young but the opportunity never presented itself to me. Why didn't you mention the fact that transitions are also so important because its a comic book, that's such an important element to how the film would be made - based on the comic's panels and doing what they're able to do that way. The scene transition of the bathroom it's very interesting, there is a behind the scenes that shows how they made it, they just changed the set in real time, they moved the floor and the lockers, the walls had wheels so they can move it fast... Awesome video btw!!!

Very good look at one of my all time favorite movies. Edgar Wright is just as much a writing genius as he is a directing one. He really is all about a great transition or using transition to keep the story moving, not just change scenes.

Man, just wanted to thank you. It's amazing to find someone whose taste matches yours in so many ways. Prisoner of Azkaban, Scott Pilgrim, Ghost in the Shell... all those have always been special to me, unlike for my friends. It's nice to see someone appreciate them as much as I do.
