  • The new R33S is a hardware clone of the Miyoo Mini Plus but with an RK3326 chipset, promising better performance but at a (potentially) cheaper price. Let's take an early look at this upcoming handheld to see if it should be worth considering.
    Update: thanks to the JELOS team, I was able to discern that my unit has 1GB of RAM. Also, official JELOS support for this device (and the R35S and R36S) is expected in the near future.

    Some tips in case you pick one up:
    - In ArkOS, if you go into the Options section there is an option that says "Change LED to Red". If you choose that, it will turn off that blue LED. It'll still show up briefly when you start up the device, but once ArkOS takes over the light will go out.
    - If you have a USB keyboard, you can connect it via USB-C adapter and press ESC while playing a PSP game with the PPSSPP standalone emulator; this will bring you to the main menu. From there, you can go into Settings > Controls > Control Mapping and set the "Pause" function to L2. Now when you press L2 it will bring up the main menu, so you can make per-game adjustments.
    - Also with a USB keyboard, you can press the "M" key while in a Nintendo DS game to bring up the DraStic menu, and choose "Change controls" > Extra controls to change the menu button from L3 to something accessible on the R33S. Because L2 and R2 are already used by DraStic to swap screens, I have been using the Volume Up button to access the menu. It's not very elegant since you now can't turn up the volume while in the game, but now you can access the menu to save/load states and adjust the other configuration options.
    - If you don't have a USB keyboard but you do have an R35S, R36S, or Anbernic RG351MP, you can use the same TF1/SD1 card to launch ArkOS on those devices, then press L3 to bring up their respective menus, adjust the controls, and then put the card back in your R33S.
    - To try out the latest ArkOS or AmberELEC on this device, flash the latest RG351MP build of either OS and then replace the dtb files with these: github.com/AeolusUX/R36S-DTB

      @@JgHaverty This thing is identical to a miyoo mini+. Like, if you put a gameboy, a MM+ and the R33S in the sam picture, are you really going to argue that the R33S just followed the ideas from the gameboy on its own? Heck. Repeat the experiment with just about every Vertical handheld. MM+, RG35XX and a R33S next to each other, two will be a lot more similar than the other.
      And in this community we go crazy over things like button placement and screen size/resolution. It's honestly a reach to say that the MM+ is just a copy of the gameboy design when there's a lot of things that are clearly not trivial about adapting this form factor to the 2020s. Because we've seen a lot of designs not do it correctly. Heck, even in this review you can see how they can screw the design completely by just giving another function to the middle button. The Original Gameboy didn't have shoulder buttons or triggers and that's also a thing that's pretty easy to screw up with placements and proportions.

    • @OneOfTheLostOnes
      @OneOfTheLostOnes Před 4 měsíci +29

    From the second I heard about this device I thought it was strange. The R36S makes sense. More powerful than a Miyoo mini, cheaper, and it has thumbsticks. Those could make me overlook a mediocre OS. The R33S though? Currently it's more expensive than a Miyoo, has an OS with less quality of life features, and the power advantage it has on the Miyoo is mostly wasted because it doesn't have thumbsticks. Even if it had one thumbstick it would be a more interesting proposition. It's just a device that feels like it doesn't really fit a niche.
    I don't know why anyone would pick the R33S over the R36S. The pocketability is the only advantage. I imagine if they manage to get it on Aliexpress it might be cheaper than the R36S, but when you are already talking about $40 devices, how much cheaper do people need?

  • @12q8
    @12q8 Před 2 měsíci

    The same company that produced R35S and R36S
    If it's the same design as either, then one of the things I did with the R35S is upgrading the ArkOS installation, and you can copy the ROMs over, however, some of the roms used are bad dumps, and also don't overwrite anything else. Just the consoles you need to, because since it has an older build of ArkOS, it also has an older version of Portmaster and other tools.
    Also, the power supply to the USB-C port is pretty low, so some USB-C to USB adapters won't work properly. I had this issue with the R35S where getting the adapter and putting a wifi dongle would make it work for a second and then crash. The only way to get it working was to hook it to the power supply and restart the system over and over until it works at some point.
    Also try to get an A2 MicroSD since they are optimized for RAM-like usage. Once you manage to get the wifi working, and ssh into it from your laptop, you can create a swapfile. A swap file is where the OS places anything in the RAM it is not currently using, and a small file of maybe 256MB is more than enough. From general usage, I noticed that it usually uses around 20-30MBs on average, which since you only have 512MBs of RAM, can make a difference.
    I also noticed the buttons, not the D-Pad or Rs and Ls, get softer with use.

    I think these 'budget' retro handhelds make great gifts -- perhaps particularly coming from someone with a passion for their setup and customization. But from what I'm seeing here, I think I'll pass on the R33S unless it's around $30 on sale. The SF2000 and R36S are still the budget-kings around $20 and $40 respectively [IMHO].

    In my opinion, for these lower end handhelds I’ve been sticking with retroid. Mainly because all there products from the rp2 on up has hdmi out
    And Bluetooth
    So essentially you have a mini portable home console and handheld
    Starting at 80-90$ ending at $200 I think that’s good bang for your buck
    Ps4 and Xbox Bluetooth controllers work great with minimal re mapping
    I own 3 retroid and love them all. Traded some Pokémon cards for one and bought one waiting on another, my only complaint was the launch of the 3 plus after the 3. But now they are more transparent
    Also have uses for them all cheap and fun handhelds and through out the years I’ve always had a fun handheld ❤
