Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.
The musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Now in its 35th record-breaking year, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, after more than 11,000 performances.

It amazes me that Emmy Rossum was only seventeen when she acted in this movie. She looked so grown up! And her voice is amazing!
Incredible that this woman (Emmy Rossum) can go from such a glamorous and classy character to a dirty, poor, slightly raunchy character on the Shameless series. She is truely wonderful. It amazes me.
His voice in the book is described as 'unearthly'.
I like Gerard Butler because his Phantom is very clearly different. The fact that he isn't perfectly trained with a voice sculptured to sound like every other male classical singer gives him that unique sound that I think the Phantom SHOULD have...
She actually begins as 16 in the movie-- though she turns seventeen early in production. She IS amazing in this movie! Outstanding!
This is how a guy brings a date to his place!
I wonder how long it took to light all those candles.
He had a horse and a boat waiting for her? What a ladies man!
Man do I feel bad for that horse. It's probably thinking, "How the heck did I get down here? Once minute I'm in the barn, the next I'm in the sewer."
The girl was 16 years old! What a brill job.
The reason for the horse, make-up, candles and stuff is because Christine is hypnotised by the Phantom's seductive voice! In the following scene, Meg walks in and find rats and cobwebs everywhere..
I don't get why people have a problem with Gerard and Emmy. They're both amazing actors and singers and they portray the roles of Christine and The Phantom beautifully.
THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER MADE! For me, Gerard and Emmy will and always be the best Phantom and Christine.
The Phantom is scary in a sexy way
I just love the random electric guitar lmao
i completely agree. The most important aspect of the Phantom is his eyes since they are responsible for bringing that emotion and power within the phantom and Gerard Butler HIMSELF possesses that. I am so glad Hugh Jackman was unable to play in this movie!!
To do list: Stalk Christine, buy a horse, make a sculpture of Christine, buy a wedding dress for Christine, get some magical candles that stay lit under water, and buy some milk
Why am so surprised by how...pretty Gerard Butler's voice is? It's lovely!
i love this version amongst other versions. Gerard depicts the raw power of man while Emmy Rostum renders beauty and the all the feminine charm a woman can possess...Thank you Andrew Weber for the memorable music!
I don't know what it is that has hold of me, but I am also addicted. It is so sad and sweet and very sexy without being dirty. I have recently finished the book and found the ending even more heart-wrenching. The story had to be one of the most powerful in our culture: attraction that goes beyond the physical, obcession, redemption. etc.. Powerful stuff. And then, of course, there's Gerard in that cape. Everytime he swishes it I swoon. "Point of No Return" is so HOT.
Personal preference. I've listened to other renditions/ other phantoms and prefer Gerard. He is raw. The Phantom grew up listening to opera, he was never taught. It would be natural he did not have a perfect voice. In that respect I find the more raw the voice, the more appropriate the Phantom. But, personal preference.
saddest part in the entire play/film is when he sings "IT'S OVER NOW THE MUSIC OF THE NIGHT" at the end. It just makes me want to cry, and hold him saying its okay phantom I love you! Who needs Christine!
When people complain about Gerard and Emmy, they are basically insulting Andrew Loyd Webber since he hand picked them.
Does anyone realize how awesome this scene is?? The walking down the hall with moving arms, then she's riding on horse back, then they're in a gondola and when they get to his "lair", if you will, the candelabras are coming up from fog. This scene is so BA!!!
This is one of my favorite songs ever.
Just love it when she takes his hand and the music starts! :3
Gerard Butler is such a GREAT singer! His voice is simply the best they Gould have chosen!!! Aside from that, he is a very talented actor aswell.
I see it as a link to the book-in which Erik, the Phantom, steals a white horse named Cesar from the Opera House's stables, and when he kidnaps Christine, she rides the horse down to his home in the house on the lake. :D But it does seem kind of random in the film, where the horse just randomly appears from nowhere! :)
The Phantom is so gentle towards her in this. I love it, it's so adorable. Christine, Y U no choose Erik?? lol :)
If my school ever does The Phantom of the Opera, for it's musical. I will seriously start crying of happiness! That's how much I love this musical!!!
Love the random cape flipping off at the end never noticed that its just there
I love his voice! whats everyone's problem??????
It's a two-way mirror that slides open (as seen later in the movie when Meg opens it). She doesn't actually walk through the mirror. She's supposed to be under a trance as she's led down to the Phantom's lair so all of those special effects (the fog, the mirror, the moving arms holding the candles and the candles rising out of the water) are all for stylistic effect.
I realized that her outfir, hair and makeup changes throughout the scene
love this movie and cast!!
If you read Gaston Laroux's book you will see it went missing from the Opera house stables, so obviously the phantom stole it
Gerald's voice is sooo unique! In a good way(: I loved him as the phantom!
This movie came out when I was in high school, my friends and I loved it so much that we saw it in the theaters three times. Never did that for any other movie since!
One of my favorite musicals, the play is amazing too. I would love to see it again.
I respectfully disagree. As much as I admire Michael Crawfords perfromance as the titular Phantom, Butler displayed phenomal passion. He was also more convincingly dangerous. It's the overall raw manliness of his presence and voice that makes him all the more formidable. His obsession with Christine is written all over his face, especially in the end scene in the final three way confrontation between he, the heroine and Raoul in the Phantom's chamber.
Aww, why didn't they put the "In all your fantasies" part? :( I love that one...
*Expects to hear beauty*
*Closes eyes*
*One direction ad comes on*
Me: AHHHHHHHH
Damn i wish we still dressed like this. i'm drooling over her night gownnnnn
Call me stupid but every time I watch this I wonder how that horse got down there.... but I love this movievt is so powerful
People who are saying that Emmy sings so effortlessly and etc. , let it be reminded that in the movie, they're lip singing to what they'd previously recorded in the studio. Look up Emmy singing live and you can see the effort she puts into her marvelous technique-- the enunciation, use of diaphragm etc.
Watched it last night for the nth time and still in love w/ this musical. This scene makes me support Team Phantom. Raoul can not measured up to him, anymore.
This song is like a mix of rock and roll and opera!!!!!!!!
This song always gives me chills!
:) Yeah. It's a lead in to the next song, which is "Music of the Night", my favorite song in the musical. If ever some man sings this song for me, and sings it well, I will marry that man!
I prefer emotion rather than pure technique and Opera style. I wouldn't have chosen any other phantom than Gerard. Great movie.
Best song of the whole musical imo, all the versions.
He's suppose to be. In the movie he watches grow up and reveals himself to her when she is grown (she is 17 in this film), Gerard is 34 in this.
LOL! From 0:09 to 0:17, you will notice that 2 of the fingers on 1 of the arms holding candelabras is missing gold paint, but I still love this video!
"I am the mask you wear..." the best line
Christine: It's the phantom of the opera
Gerard: NO THIS IS....
when he says: ''SING FOR ME!'' and she sings real high, i find that kinda creepy
Actually, it depends on which character you are listening to. In the parts in which they duet, the Phantom sings "inside your mind," while Christine sings "inside my mind."
I love the 80s vibe going on gosh.
I LOVE THIS SONG 33333
We played this in orchestra and its our jam
those arms with candles.... it is soooooooooo jean cocteau.......... and the heavenly music..... love it
I still can't get over the fact, that's Gerald "THIS IS SPARTA" Butler singing there! o.o
i'm sure the phantom didn't blow those candles out. he just sang to them and they just fainted.
The arms with candles remind me of Beauty and the Beast!
Hauntingly beautiful.
i love emmy's voice and i love gerrds aswell!
Gerard Butler has the best singing voice for a male his age in Hollywood.
i love how they say opera i cried rlly hard when he started crying when she kissed him.
Mine too! I love other versions of this, and other Phantoms, too, but you never forget your first.
매번 계속 되돌려들어도 마음에 감동을주고
소르끼치도록 좋은거같아요^^
Best musical I've ever seen in my life! Love it!!!
Thumbs up if you don't see what so many people's problem is with Gerard in this movie.
My god this song and sequence is so reminiscent of the 80s.
love it! I like Phantom.
I'm so in love with Gerard Butler :3
How do fully-lit candles come out of water?!
The Phantom is in my mind. PLease get him out. He won't stop playing his songs in my mind. He follows me to my sleep :'(( Too LSS :"(((
According to the George Perry book, Leroux's Christine was 20. If the musical was based more closely on the book, Gerard is definitely too young and pretty for the role, but I still think both actors did a fantastic job :).
Emmy Rossum is really awesome. Got to know her through her appearance in Beautiful Creatures :p
Oh my gosh I forgot how hot the Phantom is. Whew gave me chills haha
Where the hell did that horse come from? lol
è uno spettacolo che ho fatto quando ero nell'èquipe d'animazione Valtur e noi coreografi, gli scenografi, i costumisti avevamo fatto un bellisiimo lavoro!!!!
Love Gerard Butler so much. He looks so wonderful as phantom =)
on stage (depending on the phantom) the phantom is usually MUCH stronger. it's glorious live
I love the song and the movie!!!
i always love this song!!!
HOW THE HECK DOES HE KEEP ALL THE CANDLES LIT. Like the ones coming from the water. 0_0
I must have asked myself that question like a million times!!! Honestly!!
One of my favourite movies :D
Spartan sings opera -- Bravo Gerard --- i expect in every second to change those black cloths in a red cape and say : THIS IS SPARTA !!!
Love this song so much
They should totally get this original cast to shoot a movie version of "Love Never Dies" I would do anything to see that happen!
When I first watches this movie I thought Gerard's voice was amazing and sexy...then I saw the 25th anniversary at the Albert Hall with Ramin Karimloo as the phantom. His voice is so powerful and amazing! Now I look back and wonder how I liked how Gerard's voice (as the phantom) sounded in the first place...
This sounds like 50 ways to say goodbye from train like exactly
This is EPIC song!
For what I've seen, no one needs to say that this is his/her favourite movie, because I've seen people commenting things wrongly about this movie, without even being sure of what they were saying, and the whole fans jumped over them!
I guess theres no movie with such a fans like this one!
thanks 4 uploading, i love this musical and song
I love this song
I would love a full version of the movie on this channel please.
Chill bumps every time
perfect
He was the one singing. He didn't have much experience though he did sing in a rock-band when he was younger. He got a lot of practice when before the movie. I think it turned out very well.
