About ten years before she filmed this she did an interview where she remarked that she was impressed by Liza Minnelli because she didn't just sing a song, she was the song, inhabiting every word. Meryl was every word in the song and that's what makes it epic

Absolutely brilliant. "The Winner Takes It All" is one of the most honest, raw songs about divorce ever written, and Meryl Streep absolutely nails it, emotionally and musically. She so perfectly captures the balance of pain, anger and powerlessness in this song, and the Greek isles are the perfect backdrop for her complaint against the gods.
The song is about guilt, not anger. This version gets it wrong.

She so does, I didn’t even know she could sing and she nails it, chills every time I hear it, …I like her version better than ABBAS BUT DONOT TELL ON ME, I’ve been listening to them for decades, decades THATS a long time approximately 4 of them, my sister was a great fan and got their album, ha album, when it came out, and that was the seventy’s and I’m 60 so ya, 4 decades.
I wish there was Korean subtitles to this. My dad has been cheating on my mom. They are 60 years old. My mother is devastated. She’s raised three kids, worked, cooked cleaned and had breakfast and dinner ready everyday. Always dressed impeccably, always involved in church and the community. She’s always done right by my dad and for him to be having an affair. I feel like she would resonate with this song. When he comes to make amends… I hope she takes it all. My mom needs to realize… SHES THE WINNER. She needs to feel confident. I’ll never understand what drives a man to throw his life away and for what??? Against a woman who has stood by you, endured so much bs. I hate it. But this song.. seeing Maryl run free from him. I’m just a sobbing mess. I hope my mom in her ripe age of 65 has time to run free and be happy. To anyone who is going through this with a loving mother or father being cheated on and seeing their lives crumble from such betrayal. Im sorry.

i never fully understood how sad this song was until I saw Meryl perform it.
Meryl Streep being a part of this movie made it one of my favorite musicals ever. Mama Mia has a very special place in my heart because of this particular actress and every time i watch it, every song, every scene, every words spoken made me burst into tears because she made it so magical that I can't imagine the movie without her.
And then the sequel came and it broke me into a thousand pieces.
I swore to never watch Mama Mia: Here We Go Again because I can't bear watching the christening of Sophie's daughter and watched Donna leave once again.

This is the only song that could make me cry. I've been cheated on before, 6 yrs relationship. All I could think of was how he tried to manipulate everyone that it was my fault on why he did it. I was suffering depression at that time, had problems with family and was trying to cope with a psych. Also attempt to sui**. Throughout the relationship he blamed me for what he did. It was so bad that when I was telling my friends our story, they called me out of gaslighting myself unconsciously for an action that was purely out of my decision. I defended my partner to my family multiple times behind his back. I'm asian, do u know how hard it is to do that to that type of family?
It still hurts me to this day, I've been gaslighting myself to the point that I'm starting to believe I'm the bad guy.

This is the song that convinced Catherine Johnson to write the story of the original West End musical. I've heard it many times and I personally think Meryl's is the best. She not only sings the song, she tells the story of the melody and acts it out.
