- I love my Bluetti EB3A but I always felt like it didn't have enough battery capacity. By making a simple plug adapter, I''m able to connect the EB3A to another battery or even my entire battery bank via the fuse block! So instead of the EB3A having 268wh it now has over 7,000wh!

Great video, I have almost the same set up, except I added a 12-24v 10A step-up DC-DC converter and get a bit more into my EB3A, EB70s and the Delta Pro 2. It really extends the use in an emergency. In addition, I wired a Shunt to the 12v battery to monitor the status, incoming and discharge wattage.

I've gone a step further and actually directly connected extra battery by making y connect for xt60. So took the unit apart and connected the y connector with two batteries to the unit. It manages to charge both batteries with solar input which is awesome

How does it charge the external batteries as well as the internal batteries without an external charge controller
I jumped on the band wagon when the Bluetti AC200 max came out for my Motorhome but quickly learned that the product doesn’t have the functionality or settings to have a really good system, to expand it requires crazy expensive large!! Batteries and customer service is brutal. I sold all my Bluetti equipment and purchased Victron equipment and built a system that is scalable, reliable and has a support network of dealers and community.

Great Video. I use that same SOK connected to adjustable boost converter to about 25V to get close to 200W of charging for my Bluetti EB70.

This is a great video and I thank you for it. I have the Bluettie EB3A as well and have recently been experiencing problems with it. I’ve hardly used it at all. This seems to be quite common.
Mine “bricked” itself for no reason at all that I can determine. It kept showing “Short” on the screen with nothing plugged in. I kept connecting and disconnecting the power cord and pressing the DC/AC buttons to turn it on to no avail. I ended up just leaving it plugged in (like I always have) and now all of a sudden it is working with both AC and DC sockets working without the “Short” notification. In fact, I’m running an ICECO refrigerator/freezer now to test it and all seems to be working well.
I can’t say that I can recommend this battery bank with these issues and Bluetti doesn’t seem to be helpful at all to anyone that has experienced this.
Well, I got sidetracked there from your video. Hopefully mine will continue to work now and if it does, I’m quite interested in using your technique here to extend the battery life of my EB3A.

I had the exact problem but kept emailing Bluetti support email and after failing to fix mine after sending it in they replaced my unit with a new one. They paid shipping as well. It went pretty smooth.

Hi one thing I’ve learned after adding more batteries and all is that I should have just bought the bigger units to begin with. Much more clean and ready to go.
Hindsight is always.... well.. you know. It's just hard to put all the $$ up from for something that your not sure you're going to take full advantage of. Thanks for the comment.
I wouldn't sacrifice the portability and range of options for a bigger one. 100Ah battery in the car and at home and the eb3a delivers everything in a tight and light package.

I did that with my EB3A, including a 12 to 24-volt step-up transformer to maximize the input watts. Still, the setup is limited because 200 watts input can't keep up with 600 watts output.
That's true. It definitely doesn't replace the need for the internal battery, but at least it's an efficient way of charging without solar. Thanks for the comment.

Yes. 12.6 to 24v, but I’ve used a gel battery at less.
Neat idea, thanks. If you decided to add an in line fuse to the connection between the 12v Lipo4 battery and EB3A, what size would you recommend?
Since I used 16awg wire, I would go with a 20amp fuse. I believe that size wire maxes out at 18amp. If you want to be really safe, go with a 15amp fuse. Hope that helps.

Just purchased the ED3A and am understanding you can use this as a UPS unit.
If so cound i make a male to male short extention cable and plug in any camper 110 outlet to make all the outlets live . Understanding i would never use a 30 amp connextion at the same. time.
Basicaly boon docking wirh the Blueetti.

The only thing I would worry about is if you have any other form of inverter input wired to the system as well. Having power pushed into the AC output of the camper inverter might be bad news even if it's not on. Other than that it should work just fine. Just remember it's only 600w. I use this method with a smaller powerbank that has nice DC inputs and outputs.
Ideally we want a powerbank to have a true extender, charge and discharge both at the same time , instead of one flowing to another. An equilibrium and balance to minimize cycles.

Interesting concept. Definitely more efficient than using a wall power supply. You could potentially also just hook straight up to your 24v system as well to utilize your solar to charge as well right? Just make up another pigtail to come off the 24v system.
Thanks true! I should do a short on connecting to the 24v system to see what happens. I need to figure out a way to test how much more efficient it is. My guess is about 15 to 20%.
@@OffGridBasement You would guess you have use your AC power meter (like a KillAWatt) to measure grid wattage "consumed" then you would need to measure how many watts actually went into the power station on the DC side and divide those numbers. That would at least give you the efficiency of the AC-DC. Harder to say with the DC-DC because the actual converter is internal to the Bluetti.
A 24 volt nominal PV has an open circuit voltage of about 45 volts, exceeding the EB3A 28 volt limit. It can be connected safely to a 24 volt battery.
there are already aligator to 8mm wires. but choosing the right AWG gauge is important also. :)

The Lifepo4 battery I like is the Redodo. Very simple battery with no bells or whistles. No heaters or cold temp protection. Just stores energy. It's a bit over $300. Here is a link if you want to check it out. amzn.to/3JqPfDQ
I have the 50Ah version of the AmpereTime / LiTime battery and it's worked pretty well also.
I've heard TimeUSB is also pretty good, but I've never worked with it.

What about this setup when camping for a week:
Daytime - 200w solar charger plugged into eb3a solar charging port adding roughly 100-150 watts/hr. Simultaneously have a Haisito 20 amp battery charger plugged into an AC out port on eb3a to charge an external LiFePO4 battery (12v 50Ah for example) for full battery charge top off. In ideal sunny conditions both units could be completely topped off during the day.
Night: use ring connectors from an external battery that end in a dc7909 plug and plug into solar input on eb3a. This allows you to use outlets/charging ports as needed overnight. Round numbers, the external battery will replenish eb3a at roughly 100w/hr with 12V or 200w/hr if using a boost converter to increase to 24v. If only running a fan and maybe charging a few phones/iPads, this could work indefinitely with sun by day.
Any potential problems/issues with this?
On nice sunny days this setup would work beautifully IMO. I don't see any issues with doing this. All the charging and discharging is well within the specs of the EB3A.
I’m really grateful for your videos I’m starting out new with these LIFEPO4 batteries and my EB3 A. your videos are very straightforward direct and to the point very helpful. do you think it would be OK to set up a 100 W panel outside (ground it of course) and run the wire inside fused and everything and then put my connectors on in the house and just hook that up to my EB3A and kinda use that as a charging station for the power station and maybe have some kind of a deal rigged up where I could charge a 50 amp hour mini battery on that same panel? Ok I think I made a mistake in my planning here,,,it would be better just to set up that solar panel or maybe two for the battery and just make your connectors and re-power the power station in thata way 👍😊

I don't see any reason it would reduce the battery life. The charge rate is fine and the mppt inside of the Bluetti would stop charging when the unit is full. I would unplug the unit when not in use. I hope that answers your question. Thanks for the comment.
I have a 12v to 24v step up convertor (buck convertor I think you call them) and if the EB3A is not-in silent charge mode it will charge at 150w from a 12v source I have. Without that convertor I just get 70w charging.
Note that if you have the EB3A in silent charging mode it seems to cap the charging like this to 99w.
I use a cheap second Power Station to extend the EB3A in this way.

Is the length of these barrel plugs OK?I bought The barrel plugs and the little battery connector plugs through your Amazon affiliate link how ever I haven’t tried it yet i will soon as I’m getting ready to. I noticed the barrel plug seemed a little bit short will they work OK with the EB 3? I really like that fuse Block hook up I believe I’m gonna go for that one also and just keep a small 50 amp hour battery handy if we go on a trip or something

You sure could. That setup wouldn't cause any problems.
For anybody using your non fuseblock option outside of a demonstration, I recommend an in-line fuse off the battery + lead.

What size amperage with the boost converter? Could I get one rated for 15amps therefore not maxing it out possibly having the converter not run as hot? Or do these converters just go to their max regardless?
Mine is a 10 amp boost converter. I believe the EB3A would limit the draw, so the bigger the converter the less heat. Thanks for the comment.
I did the same thing. Now I have a 600 watt inverter for my SOK 100AH battery that has 200 watts being inputted. I don't think I need a bigger power station for what I'm doing.

How do you go about charging your battery bank without exceeding the input limits of the EB3A? Or do you disconnect the EB3A first then charge your bank?

That looks really interesting. I am looking for a solution to do that with a 50000 maH Power Bank. There is a output of 12V 20W. Now i will check if that works on the same way. I will do that to enlarge the running time for my Campingfridge At the Moment my Coolbox is good for about 7 Hours on the EB3A , because she is running not all the time. Thats why i think with an additional input of 20W i can enlarge this time by some hours. Or what do you think? Sorry for my bad english.
Hello! I don't see why it wouldn't work. With a 50k mah bank you should be able to get about 1.5 more hours of use. Good luck!

I'm curious about what happens when the bluetti battery bank and the external battery approach the same rated voltage, like at 80 or 90%...I wonder would the transfer continue or would the batteries balance out. I do basically the same thing except I do use the 12 to 24v boost converter and have never tried it with a stand alone battery. I guess it would go all the way to 100% since bluetti promotes the ability to charge with an automotive cigarette lighter adapter, thanks 🌞
That is a good idea just to confirm that it works. Maybe have a battery @ 12.3v and see if it charges at the same rate. Thanks for the comment.
EB3A battery is 7S2P cylindrical cells, so the DC input is being passed through a MPPT charge controller to charge the battery. There's no approaching the same rated voltage but may see taper as it approaches the top.

I have question for you ok do think a ups can run longer than like 1hour they very good but battery life sucks they like inverter you plug them to charge if power go you have few minutes of power I see people hack them make run much longer
Yes. As long as you keep the battery voltage the same, you can wire up any size of battery. Most UPS are 24v 9ah. Basically 2 12v 9ah batteries connected in series. I don't know how fast the batteries will charge. That might be the downfall.
i just got mine a few days ago love it. but you can only put 200w into the Buletti. if you are using more then you are taking in then it's not going to work. You are not really expending the compacity. you cant access the second battery only at 200w so cant see how that is expanding your storage. all you are doing is mimicking the solar input. please let me know if im looking at this wrong.
You are correct. It's really meant for overnight use. I was thinking of powering a fan and some lights. It would pull it from the battery and keep the Bluetti full. Thanks for the comment.
I just tried using my EB3A while charging with 200w solar panel as I watched it from your other video. my solar panel produce more than 150w that time and I only connected a 10w clip fan on my EB3A. battery level is fluctuating to 99% and 100% when full charge every few minutes. the question is.. am I decreasing my EB3A battery life cycle with this activity of 99% to 100% up and down charging every few minutes? I want to know because I'd like to connect a large battery at night but im afraid if it'll just have the same issue. Thank you
I don't believe this will have any issue with the cycle count of the EB3A. Small charges like what you are seeing don't have much effect on Lifepo4 cells. I believe something else in the unit will fail before the cells. Thanks for the comment.

I bought these Klein crimps seeing you use them but mine seem to puncture the heatshrink crimp all the time, Did you have to change the die in the Klein crimp? Thanks in advance

Yes I bought the multi pack including wire stripper and very impressed with them both just unfortunately damaging the crimp on the marine heatshrink butt crimps.

Both. Once the power station is full it pulls from the external battery. Well, as long as it's not over a 100w draw. Anything over that and it pulls from the power station as well. Thanks for the comment.

Great idea but you have to remember that this will extend your run time for whatever you have plugged in but you are still limited to 600watt output

0:41 I leave my AC cable in all the time to recharge when power comes on. What happens with second battery? Must I only connect that once bluetti's battery is flat and then disconnect AC plug before I connect external battery? Must I then separately charge external battery again with it's own charger once it's flat. Might sound like stupid questions, but this is not my game
Everything you said is correct. I could leave the secondary battery plugged in even if the bluetti is full, but then the secondary battery will fully deplete. Then you will need a separate charger for the secondary battery. I hope that answers your questions. Thanks for the comment.
Thanks for the reply, and I now have a seperate charger for external battery. If AC power goes off, my TV & Explora uses 130w but external battery (12v/105ah) only charge Bluetti at 30w which is 100w less than what it needs. It does extend it to 2h40min. which is only an extension of 40 min. Remember that I use Bluetti while AC is off and don't just charge it. Does the 30w input charge sounds correct?
I wish there was a way to convert an added inverter to increase the watts past 600w without using the boost feature.

a 24 volt battery would have brought you wattage closer to the max of 200 watts .On my channel i did an experiment with a Variable power supply. adjusting the power supply to almost 28 volts and the amps close to 8 i got 193 watts very close to the max input of 200 watts.

Very interesting. I would like to charge the SOK using the EB3A which is plugged in to AC power. The EB3A, has 12V output which can feed the SOK?
AC -> EB3A -> SOK. Has anyone tried that? Basically using EB3A as a battery charger
I've never tried it, but I don't think it would work. I think the EB3A DC circuit would fault due to over amperage. The battery would ask for over 10A. Thanks for the comment.

I don't think you would be able to charge the 12v battery from a DC port on the Bluetti. You would need an external battery charger to plug into the AC. The best thing to do would be to have a solar panel connected during the day to charge the battery and the Bluetti at the same time. I'll try that out in another video. Thanks!

I wish a low cost DC battery expansion system existed for these small solar generators.
I figure it consists of three parts:
1. Charging the solar generator from an external battery (easy, done)
2. Switch input to solar if available, as most generators do not have two DC inputs. Automate if possible
3. Charge the external battery from the solar generator when excess solar is available. Automate if possible
I haven't found anyone that's really attempted to build up a system like this. Maybe it's a fool's errand and the answer is to build a DIY system from components.
Everything I've come across that can do anything like that is a few thousand dollars. Those abilities on a smaller unit would be great!

The battery type shouldn't matter. As long as it's between 12v and 24v, you're good.
I find that if you made an adaptor to plug my Ryobi 18v battery in. Now I can swap the tool batteries in & out. Charging with one Ryobi battery while recharging other Ryobi batteries. You can use a boost converter to charge the Ryobi batteries from the backup power bank.
Thats a good idea! I have a bunch of Ryobi tools and batteries. It would be nice to use them to charge up other devices without purchasing their 300w inverter. Thanks for the comment.

If you need any advice on battery ideas, I've been told I'm full of it . . . I think they meant ideas. I am going to look at some of your older videos for more ideas. Are you off-grid completely, now? Where do you live? My thoughts are not to be off grid, but the power does go off here for hours or days at a time now and then. I just want to survive during that time. I call the video series FOGS (Forced Off Grid Survival). I hope to find bits of ideas from your videos. Keep them coming.
@@OffGridBasement Just be careful that you don't over discharge your tool battery...many don't have an on-board BMS and rely on the tool itself for battery management

My dad has been using the Redodo out west in his RV for the last few months. He uses it to run his full size fridge at night because his lead acid house batteries have a hard time keeping up. I'm looking forward to doing a capacity test of the Redodo when he gets back. Thanks for the comment!

Just hook up a 24v battery to it. The charge controller inside the eb3a will limit the current draw.

If you have a cigarette lighter adapter to 7909 barrel plug it might work. I honestly don't know.. I would need to test to see, but I don't have a 2AC. I'm guessing the 2AC output is regulated @ 13+v, so that's what makes me think it might. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

As long as the eb70 can pull the amount of current needed I don't see an issue. I think it's 8.5A.

I have a eb3a that I use with my mini van camping and need to extend its power and flexible ways to recharge. I'd like to use a 60ah deep cycle battery with it because they weigh 40lbs instead of 60lb for 100ah plus they are cheaper. at the same time the eb3a is connected to the 60ah battery like your descibing I'd like to be able to charge both via cigarette lighter from my vehicle or from a 60 or 100watt flex solar panel on my roof. I'm fine with low wattage recharge rates like 90watts (7.5amp) so I can use lower gauge wires or run slightly longer distances. I really don't want to have to use more expensive components like a solar charge regulator. I want to be cheap and safe. If i have to get a 2nd eb3a that would be fine although I'm hoping to wait until it has a bidirectional usbc port.
That sounds like the perfect scenario for using the EB3A. I did a review on the Allpowers s300. It has bidirectional PD charging. It's around $200. It uses li ion and not lifepo4. Don't know if that's a game changer. Thanks for the comment.
I have an eb70 and have love to have an external battery input that does go through the mppt charge controller. Thi is why I got a dr prepare for 276 and use a 300 watts inverter velcro to the side 😂😂😂

No. Lifepo4 is just my preferred battery chemistry. Lead acid or flooded will work just fine if fully charged.
Can the ED3A charge your battery bank?
Only if you had an AC battery plugged into it. If you did direct DC to DC it would go over 10 amps and stop the unit.
@@OffGridBasement I see, so you would plug solar panels into your EB3a, then have the EB3a plug into an inverter, then plug that inverter into you DC battery, if you had a DC battery?

Just add a Buck converter and go From 12v to 24v should give you about 140 -150 watts of power

Boost converter if you're Increasing voltage with converter...buck if you're decreasing voltage

It's a shame ☹️ that bluetti never came out with an expansion battery for the eb3a.
It really IS a shame. That option would've made this unit so much more versatile.
Look up the AC60. Is essentially a bigger EB3A with battery expansion capabilities

@@hoopoo3721 it’s been out for a bit. The A60 is essentially a bigger EB3A. The battery is like 600Wh and has 600w AC output. It also has 2 expansion slots so it allows you to connect up to 2 B60 expansion batteries. The main selling point of the A60 and B60 is that they are IP 65 rated water proof so they can be left outdoors in the rain without issue. The waterproofness is apparently a significant factor for why the product cost so much. In my case I viewed it as overpriced because I don’t need it to be waterproof.
New battery expansion for the EB3A is B80, 806 Wh For about 900.00$ canadian $$, but the problem is that the cable to make a battery bank is not ready to buy yet, i know it is a bummer , but at the same time i find the B80 expensive compare to just buy a regular battery.

if you hook it up to a 24 battery it will charge faster about 200 watt your EB3A can handle 28 volts

Today i opend 800 watts inverter and it have ground wire to plug i opend 3000 watts inverter it not have ground wire to plug out let this have three wire white ,black and green wire to out let on the inverter
If you are asking if the Bluetti has an actual ground, the answer is no. It's just a hole for the ground plug to go.

Why pay the double conversion penalty, instead of simply using a different inverter? This wastes a significant amount of the total capacity by charging, then discharging the EB3A’s battery.
A small inverter is less than $100 and doesn’t have the conversion penalty involved with doing things this way.

Fortunately I see there arw places to buy battery clamp cables with 8mm barrel plug ends, also can get them to mc4 ends. So I dont have to make my own. 😉

Like how you showed us the wrong connector you originally put on, and why it was not the safest "correct" way to do it. Recently I saw someone who did a similar thing but did not realize that it was not the best.

It depends on the voltage. Is it a lifepo4 or SLA battery?
@@OffGridBasement lifepo4, battery fully charged, same battery charge river 2 - 105 watts. river 2 max- 170 watts.
You don’t really have that much extra capacity because it only chargers at 100 watts.
If you limit consumption to 100 watts, then yes, you have the full capacity.

Huge waste of money. Actual useable Watts. About 240 ! Real life usage. What would you want to leave on for 7 hrs? A 500W heater. This Bluetti will not power it but for 1.75 hrs tops. What about a TV for 6hrs? Refrigerator? Hmmm? Then you must recharge it. Waste of money.
Look at it this way.
Nobody's talking about this low Watt available over the long haul for the nite or day.
240W ÷ 7 hrs = 34 W useable per hr before it's empty.

This video is misleading and confusing. The eb3a is not expandable. Anytime you go in your dc input port you are charging your battery. Your proloning your usage. Its one battery charging another. There are models like the ac60, ac200l, ac200max, ac240, ac200p that are expandable. Basically, they use a cable called aviation to aviation cable and that goes pluged in an aviation port. Do your research
All I'm demonstrating is the ability to keep your EB3A battery topped off by using another battery.
