Thank you. This is so helpful.
This video was so helpful and will help me make more informed decisions when I paint white. Thanks for these great videos!
Of course, I’m so glad! Thank you for watching!
❤Thank you for the great info.
Thank you for watching
Okay the Dixie Bell silk mineral paint is what I'm going to use for all my furniture painting and plus I wanted White awesome thank you so much
You are so welcome
Thanks again for more great info. I am going to be trying a sprayer soon and think I would like to get the GF enduro poly. I’m also going to try the wise owl one hour enamel you have reviewed in the past. I plan to use the wise owl on a table top and the GF on the base. Do you think that is ok?
Also do you know if wise owl carbon color is a dark gray or more black? It’s hard to tell on their web site. I love fusion ash color but want the durability of the enamel.
And thank you again and again for all the great information you shared !!
Totally ok! Wise Owl OHE was designed to be extremely durable and literally dry in one hour -to recoat and to use. Always topcoating is optional with these type of products, not necessary, some will topcoat even on these durable beasts of a paint! :) I believe Carbon was an ashy black, not a true black they have Jet Black which is a true black. You are welcome and thank you for watching!
Hi Kimberly! Perfect timing for me on your video-painting an old double bed that was previously chalk painted yellow. I primed with 2 coats and now have done 1 coat of the Fusion Raw Silk. If this is going in a little kid’s room, would you suggest a top coat? I would imagine it could get banged around a bit. 🙃
I would suggest topcoating and adding some I’d the raw silk to it. I just did that today and many times before, along with priming and no yellowing
Have you ever tried Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane or Insl-X Cabinet Coat in comparison to the General Finishes White Poly? Would love to hear your thoughts on durability and finish...
I have but not sprayed furniture with it. I actually used it for all my interior doors and brushed it on. So I can’t compare how it is against the enduro for spraying. I need to see if I still have some and do a video on that paint! It’s a great paint
Thank you thank you thank you kim!!!! This video was exactly what I needed right now and I felt like you were speaking directly to me since I have been asking you about this very thing and I was kind of pulling my hair out a little bit . Because of this video I completely changed what I was going to do as far as color. Now I am between the general finishes brushable white enamel and one of The White Silk paints. I also downloaded your free ebook I think off of your website where I was able to get additional tips which was very helpful thank you so much. The only thing with the desk and table I'm going to be working with are both painted so I'm not sure if I can just sand it off or need to get a paint stripper. That's what's holding me back at the moment. I'm on a very strict budget and trying to keep the cost down as low as possible
I just found a video from your library on painting already painted furniture and I am watching it now. You are amazing and think of everything, you have no idea how much I appreciate you!!!! This is so kind of you to help and guide so many of us out there!
I am so glad! What I will tell you (I don't work on already painted pieces) but I have in the past and I personally like to remove the prior paint work as your paint job will only be as good as what it is going over - look, adhesion, etc. With that being said, you don't have to remove it all, I would suggest cleaning, sanding smooth (more of a fine grit scuff sand), prime for adhesion and paint!
Okay I watched your video on painting painted furniture and that was so helpful. I looked at my furniture pieces and my table is stained in a very dark brown color and my desk is in a very dark brown paint(which I got free). Earlier I decided to use an all-in-one silk white paint since it would save me time and money and I really enjoyed your video about. So In your opinion do you think the Dixie Belle silk all-in-one paint would be strong enough to use over my painted/stained furniture after I sand of course? Or do you think it's best to use the primers you mentioned such as GF stain blocker for the Zimmer 123? Both of my paint pieces I will be painting white and will have a lot of traffic.
@@kaylamcfadden5189 going over stain can be different than over paint, you may encounter bled through over stain. I would do a test section, personally i prime a dark stained piece when going white. Try a test section with the Dixie Belle - it’s durable enough I just would be worried about bleed through and coverage over such dark pieces (you will save on the expensive paint if you prime as well - not having to do so many coats to cover).
Oh ok that’s good info. Oh ok I thought the primer in the dixie would block bleed through. So is primer and a stain blocker the same thing or are they different?
So you just use the regular clear shellac AS a primer and not a topcoat?
I'm using DB Silk to paint some Kitchen Island Chairs that get a ton of abuse. After I paint, should I then put on the Zinnser Shellac?
No - shellac should not be used on top of paint - it’s intended for underneath to prevent bleed through - it is not a protectant top coat. As well, Topcoating over whites can cause yellowing, your best to use a high use with built in top coat paint - which db silk does have a topcoat built in.
Hello! I am in the process of painting a front entry way bench Snow White from general finishes. With 3 young boys I’m worried about the durability of the paint without putting on a top coat, but don’t want the white to yellow. Any advice? Thank you so much!!
So your already In the process but I would recommend a different paint with a built in top coat. GF warms against top coating Snow White and I would agree. You can certainly try a non yellowing waterbased topcoat but there is no guarantee it won’t yellow instantly or over time.
Hi Kim! Thank you so much for all your videos. They’ve been extremely helpful. I’ve started painting furniture to resale and I’ve been having issues with my water based polyacrylic topcoat. It scratches very easily. Is this normal? How can avoid my poly scratching? Thank you so much!
Hi, thank you so much. I have never had that issue. What I can tell you no topcoat is impervious to scratching. With that being said, it shouldn’t scratch easily. Brand and quality of product make a difference as well. I use General finishes high performance top coat and have never had issues.
@@BorninaBarnBoutique Thank you so much for your response. I used Verathane water based polyacrylic and Behr chalk paint. The piece is a dark blue and I put some in the poly could that be the cause? Also, I live in Florida the humidity is really high I thought maybe that’s causing the issue too…
@@andreabernard9468 dark colors are harder to get a good finish with but it still shouldn’t scratch just because of the color. As for the humidity - that can definitely play a role in the cure and finish.
@@BorninaBarnBoutique I’m sure it’s a combination of humidity and the paint as you said. Thank you again for your help!!!
Thank you so much, Kim! Do you thin the Enduro White Poly to put in your Earlex to spray? , I have never used the GF stain blocker primer in white. Is it akin to BIN Primer, as far as adhesion and blocking tannins Can you clean your spray gun out with water if you use the GF stain blocking primer in white as it is water based? I hear BIN is a pain to clean out of sprayer and you have to use ammonia or such and I don't really want to do that... So many questions, I know! VERY helpful video and two in one week!! Yikes! I thought you were slowing down a bit... LOL I am VERY thankful and grateful for all of your videos and help! You rock!
Hi Beth, Your welcome! Yes I do and the clean up is easy. It’s a good stain blocker primer and water based so easy clean up in my sprayer. I think it’s better than BIN water based primer. I don’t care for BIN (just a personal choice) I wouldn’t use BIN in my sprayer (the heavier duty BIN primers are oil based). For heavy duty priming jobs I use the zinsser shellac in the spray can or the other BIN oil based in the spray can. That is absolutely correct you can’t clean the oil based BIN with water it does have to be with ammonia and yes I don’t mess with that. I know right! I’m not slowing down here - I’m slowing down with producing so many pieces every month so I can concentrate on my channel here! 👏🏻 Thank you for watching!
@@BorninaBarnBoutique Thanks again! :) I will have to try the GF stain blocking primer. :) Thanks for all the videos. Love them and have learned so much from you. You are a wonderful teacher!
@@bethscholtes4897 Oh I forgot to answer the thinning question! No you do not thin the Enduro Poly it is super thin already
@@BorninaBarnBoutique OK. Thank you! Well I asked you enough questions, no wonder you missed one! HAHA! :) Thank you so much!
What topcoat would you recommend for white paint, I've already painted 4 pieces white. I topcoated the piece in the bathroom 3 months ago, thus far, no yellowing. A small coffee table turned yellow. I have 2 tables painted white, that have no topcoat because the smaller table turned yellow. What type of sealant would you recommend for the 2 pieces that are already painted but have no topcoat?
I love Lilly Moon Paint Stellar Shield - great non yellowing top coat.
@@BorninaBarnBoutique thank you so much, I will try it. I wished I had watched your videos before taking on these projects, you live and learn. Again, thank you, take care and be safe.
Do you spray your Fusion? I think my HVLP gun is not the right one for this. I spray General Finishes and others that I water down often. But I haven’t been able to get the finish I want with Fusion. What do you do?
Yes I do, I primarily spray. Nothing different than any other paint. I dilute a bit and that's it, It sprays beautifully every time. Not sure what the issue would be.
@@BorninaBarnBoutique It seems to be a little too thick for my needle. The General Finishes primer is the same way.
@@AngieWilliamsDesigns Even after thinning, then I would suggest going up in needle size - 2.0 mm
I have a question, it is this, when you speak of “white” is it just the brightest whites? What about the off whites? Do they yellow as well? I haven’t painted much white at all, but, I’m going to start a full bedroom set with the Fusion Champlain. It’s a beige/white, so I need to worry?
It can be not just bright whites, the off whites as well (although they off whites already have a golden undertone if can turn them too). Most will tell you the bright white and light white colors. Champlain still being pretty light can yellow with a top coat if not primed. I would suggest priming with this color to avoid any tannin bleed through and your can always put a little bit of your champlain paint in your topcoat to help combat that too.
Ive been finishing things for years... Your advice IMHO is so Spot On... I hate to say this........
"Your Disarming Beautiful!!!!!!".... I know... a Sexist Statement.... Ill blame it on the 2 beers I've had....
No, I won't.... Disarming Beautiful regardless.... Obviously.....
and for real.... Ive been doing this Trade forever... I appreciate your efforts, and knowledge...
Im better at my Trade because of you... THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you so much! Haha! Thank you for that too - your too kind.
@@BorninaBarnBoutique Thank you for your response... I guess I couldn't help it...
Keep up The Great Work!!!!
How do you used the las can you show
The GF stain blocker primer in the can may be applied with a brush or sprayed it is a water based primer
Very much a newbie, about to start my very first piece. Found a source for General Finishes Products and purchased paint. The merchant said no primer is needed. Hummmm. I’m painting a 100+ year old small popular table top a very light grey. Since someone found a spray can of something called “leather look” and applied it to this table I have sanded it down to the bare wood. I’m concerned about bleed through if I don’t use a primer. Even the directions on the can state to use a primer. What would you say?
Oh anytime I am painting raw/bare wood I would prime. It will give you a better smoother finish and it will not allow the paint to soak into that open grain of the bare wood. Not sure why they told you not to prime, but I absolutely would. 😀
@@BorninaBarnBoutique Thank you! I really value your opinion and appreciate your methods more than any others I have watched. I’ll pick up some primer.
@@patriciaannredd2544 I so appreciate that. You won’t be sorry for taking this extra step,it will make your project finish that much better!
could i use the shellac over the waxed furniture? I painted with chalk paint and bled, please help me
So unfortunately no. Wax is always the last to be applied, as most products will not adhere to it. You will need to remove the wax and then you can shellac over it.
@@BorninaBarnBoutique thank you for answering, is there a product that only removes the wax without removing the chalk paint too
@@renatapimentel648 Mineral Spirits.
@@BorninaBarnBoutique thank you so much 🙏
Great. I used two coats of BIN Shellac based primer and then 3 coats of white chalked paint. Now what? I have to top coat the hutch and buffet but do not know what to do. I guess I will go with polyurethane and cross my fingers.
Don't go with Polyurethane (that is oil based) - go with a Polyacrylic (it is water based and less likely to yellow. You can also add in a little paint into your topcoat and that will help along with the fact that you primed it with shellac
Rustoleum Chalked wax yellowed on me after a couple years over white. I'll have a video one of these days about it as now I have to refinish it! LOL The furniture now looks like it was from a nicotine filled home! Looks terrible now. Thanks for the info!
Yes not a fan of rustoleum. I did a review on their paints a while back and it was ok, later down the road I did a review on all paints I have reviewed and it did not make the cut. Oh gosh, yes I have seen pieces turn terribly like this. Good luck. Thanks for watching 😀
@@BorninaBarnBoutique Is Sprinkled talking about Rustoleum Chalked WAX or Rustoleum Chalked PAINT?
I know whites are tough! So sorry that happened to you!
I don’t understand why enduro poly has a sprayable and a paintable paint what makes the different? Is it the thickness of the paint or the ingredients
As I corrected myself in the video they are not exactly the same - the enduro is a spray only product being a paint a poly in one - the brushable white is an enamel based formula intended for brushing. The enduro doesn’t not as brush well. It sets quickly making it harder to brush - was intended for spaying only.
@@BorninaBarnBoutique I didn’t think of the dry time but, that does make sense. Thanks for the clarification. I have learned a lot from your videos and I really appreciate that you always answer every question
@@deniceshoup7143 Of course! :)
This video is super informative. But unfortunately I’m still a bit confused as to which top coats I should/could be using over my already painted white pieces, that won’t yellow over time-
I use Heirloom Traditions (chalk style) paint, which does have the top coat built in & the paint is pretty durable on its own. But if it’s a high contact piece, I like to give it a bit more durability and so far I’ve yet to find a product that doesn’t yellow over time or completely change the color of the paint immediately upon application. I’m starting to sell my pieces. But I’m petrified to sell anything white; as I don’t know how/if it’s going to hold up for my Customer over time. (Although it’s probably not recommended w/ chalk/chalk style paint, I have contemplated trying GF High Performance Top Coat. But I’ve also contemplated just giving up on the idea all together and accepting the fact that these pieces will most likely yellow at some point).
So any recommendations/tips would be most appreciated.
Love, love love your style of teaching and l’m so thrilled to have found you. Thank you for sharing your endless amount of knowledge with us. xo
I'ts a tricky one. I have gone to using products that have that built in top coat - especially with whites so that I don't have to worry. You can add paint to you topcoat to help, you can also prime with a stainblocker which can help, there is no guarantee but these things can definitely help combat the yellow. GF actually puts a warning label on their white paints, not to topcoat, so I don't know that I would go with the GF topcoat. I have used the Lilly Moon Stellar shield which is a non yellowing topcoat and not had any issues as well. Hope that helps! You are so welcome, thank you for watching!
@@BorninaBarnBoutique thank you so much for responding!!..
I did hear you mention that warning label in your video and what I was supposed to say is, “although GF has that warming label, I’m still tempted to try it based solely off of all the Amazon reviews I read”.
(Lots of people claiming to have used it over their white furniture and love it).
I was feeling so desperate, I was ready to try it anyway.
But Lily Moon….ohhh do I loooove her opulent paint and her stain is life changing. So I imagine the top coat would be just as great. So thank you so much!! I’m definitely going to give this a try.
Love, love, love your channel!!..
I stopped repurposing furniture after I had my Son. But I’m ready to get back in the game and you have taught me SO MUCH !!
I can’t thank you enough.
@@krissymichele I always encourage to try try try! It may not happen with your piece - so many factors play into the yellowing effect. Thank you so much, I am so glad my channel is helpful! That is great - have fun and happy painting!😀
I just finished a piece with Dixie Belle Fluff. did two coats of Boss primer. I was going to use gator hide as the top coat. Do I need to worry about yellowing? I really appreciate your videos b/c I’m looking for less expensive paint. I’d rather pay $40 a gallon than $23 for a much smaller amount of paint.
What I can tell you is it could! There is no guarantee, even doing all the right things it could. Water based top coats are activators and can pull out tannins in the wood, causing the yellowing. I have had pieces do it and some pieces not - its a craps shoot (for lack of a better term :)). You can add some of your paint to the topcoat to help combat that as well and try a test section of the piece.
Born in a Barn Boutique Thank you for the info. I think I’ll go pick up some of the FUSION top coat. I’ve worked way to hard on this piece. It’s a 2 piece hutch. I’ve probably painted it the equivalent of 5 times already in terms of your time. There are at least 5 coats of primer and paint so there’s that.
Martha Stewart said to put a few drops of black paint in your white paint to keep it from yellowing.
Black paint in the white paint? I have never heard of that. Interesting
@@BorninaBarnBoutique YES! I’ve seen her say it a couple of times AFTER I painted my kitchen white back in the 90’s.
@@calgal8915 I tried researching it and couldn’t find anything but I’m intrigued - thanks for sharing 😀
@@BorninaBarnBoutique OMG! I did a search also and couldn’t find it, but The Shabby Creek Cottage blog has it and the formula is 1 drop per gallon.
