I dont think so. People forget that Tyler Durden was the villain. He was Jim Jones, a cult leader that used people to his own ends. The narrator was only free when Tyler died. Tyler and the Ikea catalog were one and the same. He represented a false ideal in the same way.

Even though it didn't appeal to him, he says that he could feel it's importance in reflecting the inner struggle of the average white guy. That in itself is evidence of brilliance. Patrice is right, its about hating the fakeness of society (Tyler Durden's character) whilst simultaneously wishing to be accepted by it (Tyler Durden's appearance and style). Towards the end the hatred of society wins more and more (Popularity of fight club increases) until he no longer cares about being validated by society (Kills Tyler Durden's image and accepts he is Tyler Durden and the execution of project mayhem), then watches the world around him become destroyed.
At least that was my perception of it. Thats probably why Patrice didn't resonate it, because the premise is to get to that point you have to try your best to fit into a society you don't feel like you fit in. Whilst Patrice always told it like it is regardless and didn't care for societies validation from day 1.

I personally see fight club as being more concerned with the role of men in a modern society that has disenfranchised them to a large extent. Not sure there's even that big a racial aspect involved, even though Patrice seems to think there is. I disagree with him on that front.
Fight club (movie and book) is a little like Patrice's comedy. It's sharp, intelligent and hits it's intended target. In both cases that target is passive-aggressive guys who are confused about how to simply *be*.
