England lost to a team that played 5 starters with their first cap. They lost to a coach in his first debut game. A 17 year old almost scored twice at Wembley. Paqueta was rubbish, Raphinha is great but England has a better winger who is in better form (Foden). Rodrygo is out of form at Madrid as well. England played with many 1st team players and the only real excuse they had, was not playing Saka and Kane. With all due respect, the rest should have won from this Brazil side. Considering how England were playing at home, in a friendly, where there gave up a bunch of great chances and didn't create much. They had some really talented in form players (remember, Southgate himself said he selected players based on form), who were nullified by an inexperienced team playing together internationally, coached by a new coach in his first international game.
Surely Southgate, at 0-0, in making substitutions would have gave instructions on how to break down the Brazilian defense. But the substitutions did little to move the attacking needle in England's favor.

A seleção da Inglaterra sempre tem alguns bons jogadores. Mas está muito distante de ganhar títulos. Com gerações muito melhores não conseguiram. Não é com essa que vão conseguir.

I don't think he's intentionally over-cautious. Southgate just doesn't know anything else. He's under-evolved. He doesn't know how to build systems of attack that also include the ability to recover from turnovers. So always keep plenty deep, leave it up to the frontline to progress from a starting point 40 yards from goal and, usually, leave it to individuals to figure it out. He's an analog coach in a digital world.

Meanwhile for the past 4 years he's had to watch a slew of bang average defenders from crappy Prem teams get called up: Tarkowksi, Mings, Coady, Konsa, Dunk... Maguire who's had howler after howler in a Man United shirt regardless of him doing OK for England. Levi Colwill had one good season for Brighton and was getting picked ahead of him. Rory said that Southgates England have met top 10 ranked teams on 24 occasions and he has only won 4 of those games, that is shocking considering the players we have and also shows it's highly likely we lose any tournament we get into as soon as we meet a good team.
How can a manager who has never achieved anything domestically get the most important job in English sport? That had never happened in my recollection.
We managed to get far in tournaments because of favourable matchups, as soon as we meet a good team we try to take it to penalties and often lose. We are basically the team equivalent of how Southgate was as a player and as a person and that is bland.
