  • I finally got around to seeing Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (better late than never) and wanted to get my thoughts out there. Harrison Ford is my favorite actor, and the Indiana Jones franchise is one of my favorites of all time.

I could be wrong about this, but from my understanding this was neither deep fake technology nor was it traditional de-aging. I believe Harrison Ford has said in interviews that this was actual archival video of his face and they used mapping technology to place it in the movie. I thinks it’s basically slightly more advanced technology than deep fake or standard de-aging. Either way, I thought it was one of the best examples of this KIND of general technology, and I agree I don’t get the complaints. Of course it isn’t perfect! Why set expectations to an unachievable height, people?!

I can respect your opinion Dave, even as someone who didn't like the movie as much. I would've like to hear your thoughts on if you thought it made sense that Marion just showed up and forgave Indy and wanted to be with him, I wish they could've had him seek her out so he could have maybe earned that reconciliation, kind of like Rocky does at the end of creed two

Totally agree with you Dave. I think DOD is a good Indy movie (although to me it shows too much the lack of Spielberg at the helm, the lack of Spielberg's sense of wonder you know... but anyway it's ok). I enjoyed it, really. Am I the only one who think Helena punching Indy at the end of DOD is kind of mirroring Marion punching him in Raiders?

Not sure if the technology itself exists when it comes to de-aging voices. I do think they could’ve used dialogue from the previous films and mash them together kinda like how the creators of South Park did when they killed off Chef after Isaac Hayes left the show.

At least Crystal Skull gave Indy A HAPPY ENDING! I think this movie would have been good and or successful if the movie starts out with an adult Short Round, who has become an archaeologist, following in Indy's footsteps. He needs Indy's help. Indy by now has become president of his university and has become wealthy and semi famous due to him writing several books about his adventures, which would have later formed into The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. Him and Marion are thriving and are very happy together. Mutt has become more mature by now and him and Indy are getting along. Short Round tracks Indy down and Indy is shocked and surprised to see him after a few decades and is thrilled to see him. Short Round says he needs Indy's help and manages to entice Indy into one more adventure. Maybe Mutt comes along too? Anyway, later in the film, there's a tender moment between Indy and Short Round, where he says he thanks Indy for being his father figure and Indy says he loves him like a second son. At the end, Indy THEN decides to HAPPILY retire. Short Round, after all this time, has been wearing the same baseball cap he was wearing in Temple of Doom, Indy takes off his fedora and puts it on his head, thereby passing the torch. Similar, to the flashback sequence ending at the beginning of Last Crusade. Now THAT would have been a great swansong and would have made money!

While the movie wasn't as bad as i was expecting the deaging was the best it could be....in retrospect i feel the movie could have been better. Also all the previous movies have been set in years that generally related to Fords real age. Indy 5 doesn't...it should have been set in 1979 not 1969 or alternatively the movie should have been made 10 years ago really.
I'd like to give praise to the poster art. The artwork illustration really is excellent & really captures the essence of the franchise. Plus seeing all the additionally promo material too in the cinema did make me smile....alot.

Sure, Brian Johnson and AC/DC can't hit those notes. I'd never expect them to be at their prime in 2023. But an Indy movie can still do practical FX and just use digital work to erase safety gear or enhance the environment like in Mad Max Fury Road. Yes, it would be a smaller, tighter film. Oh well. I'd be the first in line to see Fast and the Furious if their gimmick was "this one's all practical stunt work". I guess there is a fine line, and I think films like John Wick 2 walked it perfectly. John Wick 3 and 4 not so much. And the sad thing is I know there was a lot of real stunt work and practical sets in Indy Jones 5, but my brain now just defaults to "its all CGI" I'm all in with digital combined with practical on films like Star Wars, Dune or even Last Night in Soho. Not sure how else you replicate the 1960's. But watching the original Raiders knowing that there were real artists and stuntmen creating a masterpiece brings me joy no modern movie could.

I watched Dial of Destiny a few days ago and I thought it was okay, but I’d probably put it at the bottom of my ranking. I actually like Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and thought that film was a better ending for Indy. Of course, there didn’t need to be any more films after the first three, but if I had to pick between Skull and Dial as a final film, I’d choose Skull. I thought it was more fun and felt like it still had a bit of the spirit of the first three films. I didn’t really get that feeling from Dial. I still enjoyed the film though and I agree that it should’ve been a bit shorter.

When Helena knocked Indy out, I thought he would wake up with his son alive. It seemed like they were setting it up for that, lol!
I thought the deaging was pretty good for the most part.
I don't think this is woke either. I am not a fan of Helena as it felt like Indy was getting disrespected , even though I know it's part of her character.
I think bringing Short round back and him dragging Indy on one last adventure would have been a great way to go, especially since Indy lost his son and short round being like a son to Indy!!

One that focused on the story, not putting the agenda before the story. When there was a strong female character, they were not forced on u. Strong female characters were just badass on their own. I never expected this to be as great as the first 3 movies or Ford to be 40 again but this is a pretty bad movie and I think it's not hard to see why this bombed. I think most people are sick of what KK and LucasFilm are doing to these iconic male characters, Indy, Luke, Han, Obi-Wan and Willow became these old miserable broken-down men and they've female characters telling them how much they suck. It's pretty predictable and boring at this point.

I was overall quite satisfied with the movie & Indy’s character arc throughout. There’s some great emotional beats that permeate throughout the story. I think that the Teddy character could have been minimised though & perhaps cut after they left Tangier. I appreciated that this film was a little more aggressive in terms of its violence & more in line with Raiders & Temple in that regard. I also particularly love just how bonkers the ending gets & watching Voller & his minions freak out when they realise how badly they messed up. At the moment having only watched it once this movie ranks ahead of Crystal Skull - however in time I could actually see myself even putting this even ahead of The Last Crusade; but Raiders & Temple will always reign supreme.

I also enjoyed the movie, but my expectations were realistic: Dial of Destiny WAS NEVER GOING TO TOUCH THE ORIGINALS. Anyone that walked in with that mindset is an absolute moron. 2023 is a completely different era from 1981, 1984, and 1989 respectively. (Hell, it might even be a different era from 2008.) And I gotta say, now that I’ve seen the movie, knowing what the online discourse is like (and will always be going forward), especially from groups and CZcams Channels that hate everything and call everything “woke”… Y’all look like a bunch of @#&%ing idiots.
Look, folks: I’m aware of the fact that Kathleen Kennedy should’ve been fired after Rise of Skywalker, because she’s terrible and incompetent. But at the same time, there was a lot riding on this movie, and all it had to do was stick the landing and be better than Crystal Skull. And for me, I thought that it did both those things. Dial of Destiny is better than Crystal Skull, and it did stick the landing (in my opinion anyway). Job well-done, James Mangold!
So what happens now/next? Where do we go from here? Well, the Original Trilogy has already cemented itself in movie history no matter what at this point. Those movies are legendary, and in general, yes, they should’ve ended it at Last Crusade. But given where we are with movies right now, and living in a post-Crystal Skull universe, Dial of Destiny should be the final Indiana Jones movie, once and for all. And looking at the box office numbers as of right now, it’s seeming more and more likely that that’s going to be the case. And I’m fine with that. We don’t need another Indiana Jones movie after this. No reboots, no recasting, none of that. Let Dial of Destiny be the true end to this franchise, because I do worry that having an Indiana Jones movie without Harrison Ford in it will look more like a parody of itself than a legit movie. Take notes, Hollywood!
And as for Crystal Skull, well… I think we can all look back on it and just laugh our #&%@! off. Because assuming that that movie was the end of the franchise and there was no Dial of Destiny, it would be so much more frustrating. But now, it’s not anymore and because of that, the flaws of that movie become much more tolerable (even though they still exist and they will always exist until the end of time). And that’s okay, because it’s one of those definitions of a turn-your-brain-off background TV movie. (Which you need to do, by the way. Because once you turn that brain on, especially by the time you get to the third act, that’s when everything falls apart.) I’ve said it before, so I’ll say it again: People are in a safe position to either enjoy Crystal Skull for what it is, or they can just skip it entirely. And now they can do any of those two options, so there’s no right or wrong answer there.
So yeah… that’s where we are now with Indiana Jones. Dial of Destiny stuck the landing, Crystal Skull is the true odd-one-out, and the Original Trilogy will live on forever in cinema history. This franchise can now truly ride off into the sunset (for real). Thank you for everything Harrison Ford, and hats off to ya! (Or should I say… “Fedoras off to ya”?)

Having some standards isn't a bad thing and nobody was saying that this should be better than Raiders or match it. I also never heard anyone saying it's one of the worst movies ever made. I'm not sure why you're labeling people and going so over the top to defend it. Dial is a bad movie and you shouldn't blame the fans for having standards.
