"Don't overthink it, it's just paint." After spending a lot of time watching videos, there's actually so much to learn. All the little things that will burn you if you don't know about them.
Yep, one thing i've learned as a diy painter is don't underthink it either . Try to skip steps or get lazy with prep and you're gonna be doing it all twice over đ€š
@@Macmonkey1000 I bought a quart of basecoat (half gallon sprayable) for my project and plan to buy the other quart at another time. Are paint shops pretty good at mixing paint where my second order won't come out different from the first? Part of me is thinking I should've just ordered all my base at once.
@@livedeliciously I think it's risky doing it that way for sure. I remember making the same choice a couple of years ago and then panic set in !
Before spraying any, I bought some more, which to be fair, looked very close to the first batch, and mixed them. Problem solved đ
@@livedeliciously buy it all at once. Youâll never get the exact same color match even if you have the correct paint code. Thereâs different variations within the same paint code too. Painting is more about getting the color close enough so that you can trick the eye into not seeing the difference.
@@J10969 Too late now. I'll go back as soon as I can. Hopefully it'll be the same tech that I spoke to the first time.
All your videos are really great from prep to finish. I've not painted in 30yrs & that was on my motorbike then my car back then. 30yrs on had ago at painting my 300zx & your advice & tips have been great đ and I painted my front bumper & wings in my workshop so some odd dust but come out really well. Thanks for all your advice, tips & help...Gino uk đŹđ§
I really love the instructional short videos. These are great highlights of the key points in auto painting.
BUT!! If you havenât watched the full videos Brian does, make that a priority. Then the shorts are good reminders.
Well done Brian.
Amazing!! You have literally saved my life, I basically had to paint my whole car, And just by keep watching I've got so motivated that I did it myself, Thumbs up from South Africa đżđŠđżđŠđżđŠđżđŠ
Don't over think it, its just paint.Your channel is so informative.i am lucky to find your videos
Thanks for the 'clear blend additive' tip. I'll try to remember that the next time I buy paint for a project!
Thanks Brian this is going to help a lot also loving the home videos
love this series already.
Interesting new format, I like it. I also think the longer videos still have their place too.
Hi Brian that was a great teach for me as itâs the sort of job I would attempt at home for my familyâs cars đ
Great video and so helpful, keep them coming please
Beautiful Brian thanks for the pointers.
Great basics video, love it.
excellent tip and demonstration!
I watch all your videos I have learned so much from you thank you for all your videos
Just discovered your channel, really like the instuctional videos. Definitly not for the DYI'er like myself as we cannot buy so many diffrent types of products just to paint a bumper but Im really learning quite a bit.I just have to figure a happy medium or product line to simplify.
That color is beautiful.
I definitely believe in it sealer after using it!
Great tips thanks
Great tutorial my dude.
Nice clean job..
Awesome video Brian and the sealer really make life a lot easier haha đ€Ł Brian it have guy over here in Grenada đŹđ© does make they own sealer they mixing 2k primer with base coat and they does be saying it does sand easier idk who in the world told those guys that bullshit.Much love â€ïž I really enjoyed that video Brian all the best in the next one đđđđđđđđŻđŻđȘđȘââ
great info thanks
Wow that paint covers!
I've started working at a new shop 4 months ago. Learning all their products they use. Having trouble laying sealer down flat (rm/ppg) which in turn, leaves basecoat up to the clear orange pealed. Finally figured out the clearcoat (RMC2000) but the orange peal from when I use sealer is upsetting.
Awesome!
Brian thank you
Im getting ready to spray my Harley for the first time and my first paint job. I was told that I didn't need to use a sealer since there isn't any body work and I was just adding an extra step, however I have new speaker panels that are just fiberglass and I was going to try a adhesion promoter and then sealer. I thought if I sealed them that sealing the rest of the bike would ensure that the color matched through all the panels. Just wanted to get your thoughts on this.
Hey man, another cool video, thanks a lot, Im becominc hooked lol. Another question popped up while watching and thinking bout your other videos on blending - can you spray the blending additive to make a wet bed both before and after spraying the sealer? In this video you spray it after, but in another video you spray it before? Also, can you explain the difference between clear blender and clear blending additive? Thanks a lot man, keep the videos coming, I love them all.
This is a ppg move, props given where deserved đ
Nice tips
Brian, I have a old mopar and some on painted under hood black but that is in correct it should be body color best attack on that
You need a new slogan Brian. It should be learning paint 101 with Brian đđ. Awesome video as always and starting from basic painting and perhaps to what kind of issue encounter too with painting.
Can you clarify the clear blending additive? The links only list the clear base and reducer . Great videos!
Is wet bed another name for clear blending additive. Great information i appreciate you.
Using a sealer changed the whole game for me. The clear base blend is a great tip. I must try that.
Can you tell me exactly how you created the mixture ?
I just painted my classic car using single stage paint and followed your excellent tutorials.
Everything went well but the color match is awful and I need to paint over the entire job. My question is how would you approach something like this? Itâs fresh paint and should I just apply sealer and the new paint on top of that oh should I send it a bit and then do cedar and the paint or can I just supply the paint on top of this your help is much appreciated
the clear blending additive sounds like some paint levelers I've used with rattle can spray paint to touch up old appliances, so that you cannot tell that that it was ever painted with touch up paint! I've never used what you are talking about using here, but the paint leveler in a rattle can worked great to make an old appliance that was rebuilt look great!!! You really can't tell that there are any edges from the new paint that you would normally see without it!!!
Can you do a video or do you have a video on safety equipment? Masks you wear, suits, etc. What you wear to protect yourself spraying. Thank you
Great video. I have a question about painting over clear coat. Two schools of thought. They say its fine to paint over sand clear. Others says you should always seal between paint and substrate. Which of the two give a better mechanical grip. Paint Sanded/scuffed clear or sealing over sanded/scuffed clear and then spraying base coat?
Thank you!
Hey Brian you are the best starting my second hobby and have a general question I am paining complete bumper and wondering if one coat of sealer is adequate and if so approximately how much would I mix up using a similar gun and tip as you did. Product is omni + 235. Trying not to waist but also not to mix too little.
Yo PS. thanks for the down and dirty vid. Your knowledge transfer is really great. The audio is clean the video is clear and especially your commentary is priceless. Thanks again and keep it up your channel is awesome. oh do you have the link for clear blending additive. I looked on your store and didn't catch it. Thanks again. have a pleasant day. cheers
Thank you so much, I will add it
Hey thanks as always for great content. I was wondering, but assuming the answer is no⊠Running sealer over unscented primer wonât smooth it enough for basecoat, will it?
Brian, I'm working on a VW Bus restore, Is it okay to use sealer on bare metal? I've never use sealer before but thought about using it of this project. Thank you again for all the vids bro!
Going to scuff sand old paint, to paint over with same color, can discuss it and then drive it for a while and then repaint or should I scuff it and seal it with a primer sealer. Thanks.
I spray ppg and blending the edge with the clear base caused the color base to lift right at the sealer edge...I haven't tried it again in months
What else can you use the HOK clear blending additive for?
Brian you mentioned at about the 3:30 mark that the bumper was not sanded with anything less than 400. Did I misunderstand or you can't take a panel from 180 to 320 to 400 and use this technique? I'm redoing an old pickup w good paint except typical spots...can I use this method if sanding started out at 80 and now up to 400? thks great video
once we lay down the final coat, do we need to bake the final coat in the sun or in an oven? To harden the clear? And is it advisable to do so?
very nice video. I talked to two persons, one said he uses primer sealer and can finish painting in the same day, while another person said it at least requires two days from finish the painting with long-term durability. so confused. is it possible to complete a repainting project in one day with this primer sealer? thanks
Hi Brian , great video. Iâm a painter at a ford dealership in Michigan . Was wondering were you feathered out those additional areas with four hundred , do you think itâs a good idea maybe spray some plastic adhesion per motors on those bare spots. My paint rep had told me itâs a good idea . For small spots we use bulldog aerosol can or we use the spies hecker for the spray gun.
Yes it is. If it was any bigger I would have definitely gone for it but it doesnât hurt even on the s all stuff.
Products used: respirator and cartridges? Thx for the vid
Hey Brian in this video was your blending agent just intercoat clear over the sealerâs edge?
So if i use the 2k primer only in some Little spots and then base + 2k transparent coat no issues with the older coats Will occur?
Nice
can you please make a vid about reducer type and uses because im having a problem knowing what they does thank you for sharing your good job with us
Reducer makes the product sprayable. Check the info sheet to see what recommended the temp is for the various reducer speeds. Fast is 60 and below, medium is up to 70ish, slow is up to 80 and extra slow is for really hot. These get bumped up as your needle size gets smaller. Smaller needles will atomize more, causing the reducer to evaporate faster. This is my opinion. Brian may not agree.
@@sealisland1 thank you đ€
What is a good primer sealer in a spray can? I have SEM flexible primer surfacer but am having trouble finding a Sealer in a can...
Any reason not to put primer/sealer over entire panel vs blending it?
Brian good informative video as usual. Iâm a hobby painter from Hawaii. Can you make a video about pressure settings on a paint gun and can you go past the recommended pressure settings and will I break anything on the spray gun, if I go past it? Also does CFM rating matter on a compressor?
CFM absolutely matters on a compressor. If it's less than your paint gun's minimum air rating, your results may suffer.
Hi. Can I use a sealer maybe a clear one, to coat the entire car when painting a full vehicle. Ie, roof, bonnet, sides and rear.
Brian Iâm a novice restoring vehicles, I was not aware of such primer dealers. Can I apply this product in my driveway and or my garage? Thanks
Does enamel paint gain durability and longer life with a primer or sealer coat underneath it?
Hi, where do you find those gallon caps with the handles?
âI know what youâre thinking.. and the answer is NO.. No you canât..â đ Heâs a mind reader in top of it all too.. As usual, great video đ
What is your air pressure on the dv1
Do you need to sand the primer before spraying the sealer?
Does it matter what temp the reducer has to be at ?
Can I lightly sand a dry edge of non-sanding sealer on a spot repair. what grit is safe.... 800? I'm painting a solid color not metallic! Many Thanks
Im on a budgetâŠDo i need sealer after 2k primer or can i base after the 2k?
Hi Brain , what do you do if you get a run in your seal coat . How do you fix it ? Thank you for the great videos !
Sand with 600 grit and re seal
@@PaintSociety thank you very much i'm always learning !
Can i do 600 grit before the sealer?
How long can a car be in epoxy for outside?
can you make a video on how to prepare an aluminum panel for painting?
i have a ford expedition with the bubling paint on the aluminum tailgate. Obviousky ford did something wrong and i need to know the right way to prep the aluminum for re-paint to avoid this from happening.
What you are dealing with is aluminum corrosion. We are ford certified at our collision center and we replace corroded parts. You can sand it down and clean it up but it will come back.. just like rust does when itâs ârepairedâ
Wasnât mentioned so I assume you did not. Do you have to use a flex additive since itâs a plastic?
What is the difference between 2k primar and sealar
Question, So on the 3M Performance, when you sprayed base, was that a 1.2? Looked like a 1.3 ? I've been using my iwata's but just got this gun in and wanted to try it on some base tomorrow.
I have 7 of these 3m guns and paint in a high quality, high production collision repair center and I use the 1.4 tip to spray base. We spray water base! But I also use the 1.4 for solvent sealer and when spraying the solvent blender on my sealer edges. I use the 2.0 tips for priming with grey primer. I use the 1.2 tips for spraying our UV primer. I hope this helps
Just have to make sure sealer is fully dry I sprayed base once and sealer wasn't dry big nightmare
Whereâs the link for the blending agent?
Can the blending additive be applied onto the entire substrate and not only the un-repaired section ?
Yes
Hey Brian, what do you think of high pressure suction guns like the S-770? how do they operate differently from gravity fed ones you use often?
What is the difference between "clear blender" and "clear blending additive"?
Learning so much from you...thanks for making these videos. On another topic...a couple of years back you had done a review of Harbor Freight's Black Widow HTE gun, with the 1.3mm nozzle. Do you think that gun would work with the sealer where you used a 1.2mm nozzle. In addition, for the roughly $200 price range, if the Black Widow was not available, what other HTE for top coat applications would you suggest I consider? I recently purchased the Black Widow HVLP with the 1.7mm nozzle for sandable primer and base coats. HF gets over $60 for accessory nozzles for each gun, but with your advice, I am interested in knowing a close or better gun for top coats to consider. There will be times I will be using these guns for furnture refinishing as well as small projects. Thank you for any advice you can share. A DV1 or SATA 5000 is not a consideration for me.
Hi. I would stay away from that paint gun. There are much better options for only maybe a couple hundred dollars more and more last and Spray much better. đ
@@PaintSociety Thank you for taking your time to reply. I just don't know of another brnad or model to select. I am a novice. Please recommend a decent gun for top coat that you had sampled, or direct me to a video you have, which could point me in that direction? If you have a model to suggest, that would save me a lot of time. I would prefer to stay in the $200 range, and with a recommendation for a gun for a couple of hundred more, I would be okay purchasing a used one...of the model you recommend. If need be, to stay in that price range, I would be okay with a used one. I just don't know a brand or model to be considering. Your guidance would be helpful. Thanks again.
do you have to worry about shrinkage on those areas where the paint burned thru down the road?(2-3 months after the paint has fully aired out?)
400 grit. Nope
Do you have to spray base right after you have sprayed the sealer? Can it sit a few weeks before base goes on?
U can, youâll just have to scuff the sealer before u base it
little of topic metal filler neck for 98 integra gsr my plan is to clean it sand with 400 grit lightly then use etching primer then top coat of vht ? sound good ?
Use epoxy from Eastwood if you can
@@PaintSociety ok thanks i will buy some tonight
@@PaintSociety after reading reviews i decide to go with the 2k epoxy primer ..... any advice on a good respirator
So if the sealer has a glossy finish, will that add more shine to the paint once everything is painted and clearcoated?
It wont no
Was this the clear basecoat paint to smooth the edge? Or some kind of special additive?
Link in the description
can i use 1.4 spray gun for a primer or there is other size that perfect for spraying primer?
For high build primer you would use to put over bodywork use a 1.8 this video is on non sanding sealers that go right before basecoat that you can use 1.3 or 1.4 is fine. Always read your paints TDS to see what they say
So I can spray my base right over a primer sealer as soon as it flashes
I see the products you used Akzonobel Colorbuild Plus. Black & white primer, Sealer Reducer Slow & Sealer Hardener Slow but you didn't show the ratio amounts you mixed up?
Mixed in the computer by weight
Great videođ..I have a question..I spray Standox 2K primer filler as wet on wet but keep getting fish eye on larger panels. Maybe I'm applying it too wet. Any advice to eliminate this problem? Thanks
Too wet could cause fish eyes it could be the surface of the panels your spraying
I doubt that itâs the sealer bro .. maybe itâs the prepping material that your using
Could also be moisture in your lines. I assume you are using a cooler and dessicant
@@pablovelez9113I spray the panels down with water borne cleaner and then spray the sealer. I'm thinking if it can also be the hardener as I'm using a normal one instead of slow?
@@dannyroopnarayan4729 might be bro the best advise is to re check all of the steps that you do before you start painting .. and also clean the environment that youâre working in sometimes the environment can be contaminated like the wax cleaner stuff is a bitch the get off from the environment ..
Can you block an old paint job with 180 the then 320/400 and seal for new color?
I wouldnât. Once you hit it with 180. Itâs sketchy.
I would recommend priming anything more course than 400.. and if you sand with 180 first then youâll break through so much trying to get the scratch marks out that it will need primed 100 percent
Good informative video. I'm a bit confused. Video shows Akso Noble being mixed. Your links doesn't show that brand and no sealer at all. No additive either.
They dont sell it online so i link comparable products
I know you arenât exactly supposed to do it, But for a Looong time now, my Pops has taken regular urethane primer, adds lots of slow reducer to make it spray flat, and uses it as sealer! Knock on wood, I have yet to see it EVER cause any issues like, bleeding, fading out, solvent popping or peeling! Iâm not saying it canât, But Iâve seen it work well through my own eyes, and Iâve sprayed it many times myself and it even smells like sealer!! Donât knock it until you try it Brian.. đ€·ââïžđđđ
Can you use any epoxy primer as a sealer?
Check the tds. Sometimes you can add more reducer and make it a sealer
So,,, I noticed that you guys are using the DV1 clear coat gun. You like that better than the Sagola 4600 extreme ?
Yes
@@PaintSocietyso many great videos. Could you do one for us lower budget DIY painters what guns you would use for all applications.
Hello Brian, is it okay to shoot a paint blender on top of the sealer or should I only put the paint sealer around the edges of the new paint I'm trying to match? Great info thank you
What do you recommend if i do not have access to sealer? Love the content keep it up!
Youâd have to make sure whatever primer youâre using is sanded and prepped without any breakthroughs on the primer so no metal is showing. If you canât use sealer to help hide some slight imperfections, youâll need to make sure your primer is as perfect as you can get it as well as being a âtightâ coat which means is completely covering your panels, hard edges mostly so your base coat will not be attempting to stick to bare metal.
I use upol up2253 and 2275 or 2277, it works for this procedure
@@jasonmaes6021 Thanks man, clear coat on my car just peeled off, and i do not want to stripe it all down because primer underneath is still good. What grits do you recommend using when sanding that bad clear coat and prepping for first coat of primer? 180, 220?
@@rcs0296 thanks!
@@SlavaBogu888 the mix is 4:1:2 4 parts primer 1 part activator 2 parts reducer, it works as a wet primer and its sandable when it dries, it has held up for a year, we had a week of lows in the teens in the winter and 109 degree days this summer, paint does good to last 8 years anyway
Brian, could you have just sprayed the whole section in primer sealer and not mess with the clear blend?
Yes but I prefer her not to get too much paint on the edge if I have to mask a grille
Is there much of a difference between primer sealer and just plain sealer ? And which brand offers a decent just plan sealer ? Thank you
A primer sealer is either one depending on how you mix it
