  • I review the 2024 Chevrolet 2500 HD 6.6L GAS V8 L8T engine with the New Allison 10 Speed Transmission. I explained why this 10L1000 Allison transmission is not the same as the Allison 10 speed with the Duramax. I also go over how this new 10 speed transmission can benefit the 6.6L gas V8 in the chevy 2500 HD trucks. I discuss fuel economy, MPG, acceleration, low end torque, increased towing figures and power and performance while road testing this new 2024 chevy 2500 HD with the 10 speed Allison transmission.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend. I got my hands on the new 2024 chevy 2500 with the big old 6.6L gasser V8 and this truck now comes with the 10 speed allison tranmission also known as the 10L1000 which is a massive upgrade for this engine platform.
The first major thing I wanted to do is tow with this 10 speed and see the difference between the 6 speed transmission in the 2023 and older trucks. but that will have to wait until next week.
but taking a closer look at the allison 10 speed unit, the first major difference is the increased towing capacity the new 2024 truck with the 6.6.L gas engine can tow more weight simply with the addition of this new 10 speed transmission.
the second major point I wanted to talk about is how this transmission with the gas engine is NOT the same as the allison 10 speed with the diesel engine. this does make sense because the gas engine is not even making half the amount of torque the diesel engine makes. but I think this may disappoint some people knowing you are not getting that crazy strong internals in this transmission with the gas engine.
Lastly I take this truck for a road test and go over things like acceleration, low end torque and fuel economy all compared to the 6 speed transmission. acceleration is greatly increased but fuel economy seemed to stay pretty poor despite having the new unit.
hope you guys liked the video.

That’s good to hear!!! think a lot of people are still hung up on the old gas trucks or just old trucks period… when we had 4 speeds, 5 speeds, etc…. like my 2015 Ram still has a 6 speed trans. Even with its 6.7 Cummins with 450hp 1000torque numbers… a 6 speed still hinders it compared to todays 8 speeds an 10 speeds when towing… That 6.6 Gasser at upper 300hp to the wheels can stay in power easier then before…

We have towed our 7000 lb travel trailer with it and the truck is unbelievable we have to watch our speed because we forget it’s back there. I have a 2024 3500, and went from a 2008 Duramax Diesel to the 6.6 gas. I was very Leary to make this change however I do not regret it at all. It is a towing beast and I tow all the time. I picked the truck up the 2nd week of July 2023 and it has 30,000 miles on at this time. It gets about 7.5 to 8.0 hauling and I haul very large loads. This is about 1.0 miles per gallon worst then the 2008 Diesel. I am in northern Michigan and Diesel is approximately 1.00 dollars a gallon more then gas all the time. I do not have to deal with Def fluid or regens. GM in my opinion hit the nail on the head with this 6.6 gas mated to the ten speed trans I don’t miss the diesel one bit.

      Correct info on GM transmission:
Ford and GM jointly designed their 10 speed tranny. At the end of the process each of them “tweaked” their own design to make them unique but they are 90% the same. GM pays Allison royalties to use their name still but the transmission was not designed or manufactured by Allison.

I had the same truck. It was a lemon from jump. 4 attempts to seal my rear window that leaked. I then came to find out it was a flaw in the body itself. They didn't believe me about the terrible hard shifting, and down shifting until they pulled the trans. pan to find metal fragments from the torque converter. Long story short, it got rebuilt at 12,000 miles then, started doing the same thing. Lost my ass getting rid of it with interest rates that went up.

Nice video. I’ve been looking forward to this and especially the towing video. I think you will be able to disprove the common narrative that still shows up from other comments I’ve read, and that’s about the “lack of power” of the 6.6. It’s just false.
As for the 10 speed, fuel economy won’t be any better. I actually think it could be slightly worse. But regardless, 8th and 9th gear is the same ratio as 5th and 6th was, and then 10th is just slightly taller OD gear.
The real benefit to the 10 speed will be towing on grades and then like passing power 40-70 mph stuff. 0-60 will almost certainly be slower because the 6 speed trucks hit 60 mph in 2nd gear and the 10 speed trucks have to shift to 3rd. Shifting takes time so don’t be surprised if you find out the 0-60 is slightly slower.
The lack of power comments are just laughable. Anyone that says that has very clearly never drove one of the trucks.

Any automatic transmission with many gears is a high wear unit, more moving parts equals premature wear.
I would prefer a manual 6 speed transmission.

I would like to point out to potential consumers that an important portion of this video feels misleading. I recently purchased a 2024 2500HD with the L8T (6.6 gas) and the transmission is definitely NOT the GM/Ford codeveloped lighter duty 10L80 that is put in the 1500 trucks. The transmission is most definitely the GM/Allison codeveloped 10L1000 that comes behind the Duramax in the HD trucks since 2020. Of course it needs a different torque converter, shift points, etc to work with the gas engine(hence the different part number), however, it is essentially the same HD trans that weighs ~360 lbs vs the lighter duty 10L80 that weighs about 230 lbs. I say this with confidence, I crawled under my truck before I bought it, and examined the trans itself and transmission pan shape and bolt pattern to be sure. It is correct that Allison doesn't build it, GM does, they just worked together during the design and testing, but that has been the case for DMax HD transmissions since 2020 as well.

I think because of the common confusion Wikipedia has been edited to be incorrect on this one by including the 10L1000 on that list. There is a video of a GM Chief Engineering talking about the 10L1000 where he specifically states it was not developed with Ford like the smaller 10L80, and that it was developed and then tested in collaboration with Allison to their standards. I will attach to links in a reply below since my last reply with the links got deleted.
