If that sounds goof to you, make sure to subscribe!
In this video i will be going into detail on the story of the Jaguar X-type that i recently bought from auction in a terrible state, fixed it and went on to sell it, only for it to be returned with a reported gearbox fault!
I will breakdown the costs of the project, what it sold for and also what went wrong and how i fixed it!

As a former motor trader letting a car 'one' sold go to another garage is a disaster, I've done it and it's a big mistake. I've also had several X types diesels, still have a 2.2 diesel and and had similar issue power loss/EML , started using decent fuel, problem solved so I put it down to the fact the previous owner probably used crap fuel. I think you have been more than fair in your approach.

I think this also serves as a good wake up call to people who may think flipping cars is easy business. Even when you think you've done everything right and have total confidence in your work, cars can be cars and still fail. Glad you gave the buyer a refund and took it on the chin as it helps your reputation as a used car salesman in the long run. Great video, once again you have gone above and beyond, what most Dealers will do to help customers who buy older, price range cars. I sometimes think that although these peple "know their rights" maybe they would be better off buying a brand new car on a leasing agreement, instead of a 17 year old quality car, then if they had any complaints, they would be covered by the makers warranty. Not that leasing a cheap car would make very interesting CZcams content, however you are a shining light in the car industry, a very moral man, keep up the good work. By the way I love your second channel, it shows just how tough the car trade can be at times. Motors must be in your DNA.

All very good points, thank you. As I see it, the trouble is that the modern world and its plethora of red tape, guidelines and buyer protection , whereas there is a time and a place for them, have created a generation of buyers who lack much of the common sense people used to once have. To them, buying a 17 year old 80k plus mileage car holds absolutely no risk, in fact they have virtually the same rights as someone buying a brand new car and we as dealers simply have to follow that rhetoric and bridge the gap! Who said dealing was easy, hey?!

This is a fair point, the reason I don’t actively calculate hours on these projects is because I generally have multiple projects on the go at any one time so jump between them constantly and also when filming / editing my hours are a bit wild so for the sake of keeping the figures focussed on each individual project I put my hours to one side and just called it all ‘CZcams work’ so any income from CZcams is responsible for covering that! I hope that sort of makes sense! As you know I’m all about transparency here👍

Had a 2006 2.2d Sovereign Estate - 193k miles on the original gearbox, injectors and clutch. Beautiful inside and out (although did need to get rusted cills welded). Once got 75mpg on a run, and it could shift. Had to get rid off it when I broke my leg and needed an auto. But I prefer it to my newer E350d convertible - it was far better made and comfortable.
Well done for restoring what would have be a future classic if not the fashion against diesels.

Hi Johnny Yes you did the right thing I think! it's always good to know when you buy a car from someone like yourself, that if there is a problem you'll do the decent thing. I have a X type saloon with about 75 K on the clock. this old girl would benefit from new injectors you just need to keep them running as clean as poss etc, some people drill out the manifold and tap an M10 thread to pour stuff in the turbo I would prefer to use something like Launch DPF cleaner but not to much this will work well on carbon, but if the vaynes are free it's probably just the actuator.

It's amazing how modern cars can throw up faults and codes which are nothing to do with the problem. I had an Audi A6 which was flashing the glow plug light and the cruise control wouldn't work. Turned out to be a faulty brake light switch would you believe! The brake lights still worked which threw me, but there are 2 contacts in there, one for the brake lights and the other for the cruise control and other stuff. That contact had broken. Local motor factor had one in stock, £12, same as a VW Golf I believe. Problem solved! No surprise that a faulty turbo actuator could show as a gearbox fault.

Garages that charge for ODB scans are the worst. It's just a cash grab - I'm all for them being used to determine a route towards a problem, but they shouldn't be chargeable considering the effort involved. £145 for plugging it in and reading codes - what a rip off that is. It preys on non-car people who don't know what's involved.

I think that’s exactly what’s happened here. The garage saw some non-car people and sold them a service which was not as described. Unfortunately for them it was me footing the bill and as a result they won’t have any more of my actual gearbox work in the future!

Perfect shop car .maybe keep it for yourself it would pay for itself over time even if only through saving on fuel . Youd probably get the same back if sold a year down the line

This Jag is so Sexy... i halfway expected you to run into trouble.
Why? You got ripped off in the "Bodyshop" Section, right? With all your composure and professional presentation, it shone though just a teeny tiny bit.
That led you to not spend a lot of time "under the hood"... because you had massive work elsewhere and were worried about the financial outcome.
There you have it... it´s always the Beautiful ones that bring us to tears :-) They have a magical way to do it, no matter how careful we are.
The Testride will be fine, but when we commit... Ohboy!

It is a bit disheartening sometimes but all we can do is be as thorough as possible and make sure things are as good as can be and then should they let us down, go back to the drawing board and try again!

Ide bet 90% of cars that get plugged into OBD have faults..so its over £100 to be informed of this without any work being done not even pressing clearr on the OBD and re running the OBD Not good tbf

Funny how when any other shop wants to make money you fell into that perfect spot for them to cheat you. Sucks that the shop charge you that just for plugging in a obd2 which shouldn't have been over 25 bucks since they didn't want to actually do any work.
Sometimes that is how it goes but like always I say remember those who screw you and enjoy the money they will no longer make that you will give to another shop for being right.

I imagine if it were me who booked the car in / took it to them they wouldn’t have been such cowboys…unfortunately the new owner booked and took it in (non-trade) and I think the garage saw an opportunity to rip them off. Sadly they paid the bill no questions asked so it was down to me to reimburse the customer when I gave the refund on the car. Incredibly frustrating but I didn’t want the new owners to be out of pocket so I swallowed it.

Could just be driving style isn’t the same as yours so you can’t replicate the fault… has a similar thing with an Audi allroad ended up going for a drive with the owner and realised they drove it hard and downshifted allot at high revs

A very valid point. I think as someone in the trade, I tend to drive with a lot of mechanical sympathy so this could potentially be why the car didn’t cause a fuss for me. That said since I’ve been using the car post actuator fit, I have been driving in a mixed manner to test everything (including harder driving), so I’m pretty confident the issue has been resolved!

The aim of the second channel is to deliver more of the in depth, deep dive details to the audience who are truly interested in it without running the risk of boring those viewers on the main channel who just want to see the process without the waffle 👍
