    The SUMMIT is in SIGHT. 5000 cells later, countless days and weeks have gone and with every small snip of the cutter each cell has been freed.
    In this video, I want to share with you what I have learnt freeing the 18650s and how I setup my workflow to make it more of an efficient system to get through this mammoth workload.

    A good way to cut open the shells is to use an oscillating tool. You cut a slot in the work table for the oscillating blade, mount the oscillating tool under the table with the blade sticking through the slot in the table top, raise and lower the oscillating tool to get the depth of cut you need. Then just run the shell over the oscillating blade and cut the case open. There are all kinds of blades to use, coures cut, fine cut, round and flat blades, pick the one you like. Please use push block made of wood to move the shells through. Watch fingers!

    I've shelled some batteries using pincers. One blade goes into the crack in the shell, the other wherever it'll grip, then twist. Works quite well.

    I use side cutters similarly for removing the nickel strips but my advice is to start at the negative end. Doing the first strip is the trickiest as things are tight so if you nick the battery covering your not going to short it as would happen with the positive end. Once the negative end is removed you can then part the batteries and the nickel strip on the other end peels off so much easier.

    i recomend you invest in a set of good quality long pincers, sharpen the cutter jaws to flush cut. its the only tool i use to split the cases, cut the bms wires, cut the nickle strips, then can grip the strip tails & roll peel back the remaining strips off the cell ends. no other tools needed

    "There will be blood"... so true. I took a break for my 18650 processing because I lanced open my finder something fierce. Had to really asses how much I'd be willing to pay to keep all my appendages. But the call of repurposing something destined to be rubbish calls like a siren.

      Oh man! be careful. The laser machine has been a god-send. i opened 130 packs manually last year and it took 4 days to do this and it was so exhausting on the hands, wrists and arms by the end. Even had a few that burned me! Not sure how others have dealt with this with larger quantities. Hence, initially the mountain was such a daunting prospect until I had the idea to laser cut them open.

  • @SpenserRoger
    @SpenserRoger Před 7 lety

    Fantastic video.
    I figure I would use a vice, put multiple packs in the jaws, then bust out an oscillating tool and run the blade enough on one edge so I could then just rip it apart by hand.
    But I haven't tried it.

    Impressed you did most of the work without gloves. I found I cut my fingers to shreds on the metal burrs. For the packs; I tend to use a vice and twist them with some large jaw pliers to break them open. It's messy, but seems to work for me.

    • @NERDVilleUK
      @NERDVilleUK  Před 7 lety

      The laser cutter was a god send. At times I did burn the batteries sleeves but TBH this was not such a big issue as they can be re-sleeved. But I found brealing the work load into its smaller processes and doing these in bulk really helped keep organised, tidy and injury free.

  • @JamesSmith-lt5zz
    @JamesSmith-lt5zz Před 7 lety

    I use to take apart packs like that. Now I take a hammer a few taps down the seem is splits open. 5 seconds you have the pack open. Obviously don't hit it like a nail. But low/medium force will split the case and not hurt the batteries. If you really wack it you can dent a battery. But its much quicker. And I just pull the batteries and wires apart. Then take pliers and remove the battery weld tabs. Lots of failed battery packs have a couple good batteries still and sometimes the circuit board failed and all the cells are like new or new. I've found most tool packs the board fails. And people leave discharfed packs to long. Tool packs have a MOSFET to kill the pack if the voltage drops to low. Always recharge lithium tool packs after use don't let them sit for for months on end discharged. Below 2.5volts the MOSFET opens to drain the pack to 0 to kill the pack for safety

  • @BacktoSchoolBus
    @BacktoSchoolBus Před 6 lety

    I have managed to get down to a very short amount of time per battery... I take a set of pliers and grab an edge and twist. The battery splits open no problem.

    I saw the video yesterday that said" NERDVille is dead" and my immediate thought was that you'd had a catastrophic 18650 thermal runaway situation! I'm glad that's not the case, I've loved all of your videos so far and am keeping a close eye on your channel for new ones!
    I use 18650's in all of my vaping equipment, and just wanted to share a valuable resource for information on Lithium cells, this guy is working with them everyday and testing and graphing different brands, His name is u/Mooch315 on Reddit and just "Mooch" on a few other sites, he's been an absolute godsend for us vapers.
    In my opinion, I wouldn't have a problem with seeing 2 or 3 ads per video, as long as it helps you out, I've loved the series so far and am now hooked!

    I have found that if you can get a good firm grip on both ends of the battery and can twist or flex it at all, the case generally seperates at one of the seams and opening it the rest of the way is easy. No tools are needed and little chance of accidentally shorting across the terminals of the cells or the power board.

    Great site. Already producing advertisement income I hope.
    I use a sharp pair of wire cutters and start seams. Once I get a gap I move the pack to the edge of the workbench, overhanging as much as possible and still maintaining leverage, and insert either a thin standard screwdriver or a chisel into the gap and press down on the lower section. This tends to split the lower case along the seams. From there I follow a similar method.
    You mentioned nipping off the weld debris. In addition I use round end of electric scissors to smooth those little barbs out so I can handle the cells without slicing tender finger pads.
    Whatever gets you there fastest. I also use much thicker gloves and therefore fewer BandAids.
    Love the new site.

      Also, pop in freezer for 5 mins.... hit edge ways on against concrete garage floor with hammer.... dont let the batteries cool off too much... not sure how it affects the lithium/cobalt mix in most of those batteries but I wouldnt chance leaving them in there for hours! Works well though on some of the tougher cases.

    You should never go in from the power connector face. Attacking it from the other side is far safer. I use a pair of woodwork pincers on the rear lip, which breaks the case easily on the right angled turn, working along that edge leaves you with a full length opening. You can then often prise the case apart, though sometimes you have to also break the two sides on better quality brands. This leaves the BMS safely out of the way, and the end terminals can be disconnected while the cells are still sat in the other half of the case.

    To increase those levels of peril, I found using a sharp ~19mm wood chizel works quite well. the sharp end does a good job getting into those seams and the extra width helps crack the case open as you twist.

    Great video. Your production value is outstanding. Just finished processing my first batch of laptop batteries.Ended up selling the processed batteries on Ebay since i dont need a powerwall. Did it more for the experience than anything else.
    I like to snip the ends off the battery case with wire cutters then split the battery on the weld seems. Works pretty well. Have multiple different brands of chargers but in the end ran everything though multiple Lii-500 since they can be charged discharged and charged again in a single device. Interested to see how you processed the batteries since that many batteries required awful lot of testers to be efficient.

    Thanks for the shout out NV. I can relate to your desire for more batteries. Been feeling the same urge here too.
    On opening batteries - I wasn't keen on going in via the power connector for fear that I might short the cells with my screwdriver. Not sure if that's an unfounded concern or not.
    And an extra throught on 18650 heat shrink sleeve - go for the light weight PVC stuff, not the thick black insulating heat shrink. You don't want to hold heat in the battery too much. And the thick heat shrink won't fit into standard 18650 battery holder clips.
    Another great video. Cheers, Paul

    I took a laptop battery apart where the + and - were in the same tape like trace, i had to use some scissors to disconnect them because nothing else worked, the battery shorted out and the scissors died. The cells were not even 18650, they were a crappy strange panasonic design which are slighly taller than 18650s and slimmer, they didnt even warm up when shorted too so those went straight to the recycling.

      Hi Colin. I know... I know... and i'm sorry TBH i get more praises for thelong intro that complaints. Saying that one of the most successful TV shows in the world, its intro is 1m45s, which is Game of Thrones Ironically!.
      I am planning a really short 10-15 second intro as I try and try and try to make short 5 min vids but I honestly struggle. Just a stickler for detail thats my problem. Bear with me i'll get there.LOL
