2:40 My only experience of seeing a bird funeral wake was with common (green-headed) grackles, which are members of the blackbird family and not related to the crows' corvid family. There were about 100 or more grackles approaching their fallen comrade in circles. Each circle would close in and approach in respectful little hops, and when near enough would simultaneously bow toward the deceased (I shit you not), and then, as if startled by some unexpected movement, take sudden flight all at once and land on the outskirts of the other circles, whereupon the next circle would hop forward until all the birds had had their turn, at which point, as if on command of their minister, the entire flock took off at once.
I just stood there with my mouth hanging open in stunned silence, eyes transfixed on the tiny corpse left behind. Suddenly...the very last thing my practical, educated mind expected happened! I saw the "dead" bird move! I froze involuntarily and felt a warm flush of blood wash through the skin of my face.... But it was only dead feathers...animated by a breeze.
