1.Go into the specialty you want right out of school. U don't have to do med-surg first.
    2. Avoid friending current coworkers on social media, some nurses can be very catty and messy!
    3. Don't compare your new experience as a nurse to other nurses multiple years of experience..
    4. If u call out "sick" , don't post that you are in Aruba, Paris, etc 😄🤣. This one nurse did that and ended up getting fired. Be smart!!.. there is so much more I can't think of right now...

New grad ER nurse here 🙋🏻‍♀️ I’ve been in the ER for 6 months now and it’s been insane. I agree that starting in the ER has taught me so much! I don’t know if I’ll stay there for the long run because I don’t know if I can keep up the pace without burning out. Another thing I hate is the fast turn over. You really don’t get a chance to spend time with patients because it’s either ok are they sick enough to get admitted? Then get them upstairs ASAP. Not sick enough? Get them discharged ASAP. But I am so grateful for the experience I’ve already gained!

    • @alsdjfknbo
      @alsdjfknbo Před 5 lety +13

      Community college = no debt
At least in california. I went to private for my lvn and it cost me 34k. Thats right $34,000 so for my RN even though it took an extra year to get in. I ended up with zero debt from that. And I even received the Cal Grant, which meant that the $2,000k that would have come out of my pocket was covered by the grant. So the RN ended up costing me like $250, which was for uniforms which weren't covered.

Been an ER nurse for 12 years now, precepted many new grad nurses especially now during/after the pandemic & with the recent increase of new grads entering the ER. I absolutely love your videos! They are so genuine and true to how it actually can feel for someone entering into a very critical and busy area of care for the first time. Many of them come with the same lack of previous experience initially. Just wanted to say that it’s so appreciated to me that you’re trying to reach these new nurses in this way. This job is so hard! And we tend to forget that teaching it can also be so hard. The environment, we as preceptors (good ones anyways) we try to create a space that allows for growth. It’s hard to find good preceptors as well, who will give what they have to another nurse without their personalities or past experience inhibiting their learning. I so hope I’m doing a good job with the ones I have now, and the ones I have had before. Hearing your input helps not only the newer nurses but also myself to remember again that even though we may not know something or be experienced in something that we’re 100% never alone. And there’s always room to learn. Nursing is a constant learning opportunity. Especially in ED, some stuff can roll through the door & even us experienced nurses could be like um WT…… I just love your message & I have used it to remind my orientees and colleagues too, that it can and does get better. & it always does :) we are an awesome group of people. Unlike any other. Thanks for being a young voice to all these baby nurses especially in the ED who probably look at us like um.. ya’ll crazy lol. You’re a beautiful and strong girl. I’m sharing your experiences on your channel to all my ER orientees. Take care of you 🩺

Great video! I started on a trauma/stepdown floor in a Level 1 hospital and I don't regret it. I think I managed to get a good 'med-surg foundation' out of it, and at the same time deal with critical care, telemetry, and neuro all at once. Next month with mark my first year as a nurse and I just decided to transfer to the ER at a Level 2. I'm so glad I took this leap because as i tried to do more for my patients, I actually hit more brick walls and felt burnt out (the unsafe patient ratios and horrible administrators didn't help). I feel like As an ER nurse you don't necessarily get to build that deep rapport, but you do set the foundation for if they get admitted. At the very least I'll try to facilitate a safe environment and make an effort to learn a little about each patient once I'm in the ED.

I’m almost 6 months in as a new grad in the ER and my ER can be kind of all about clicks but I’m just there to work and go home lol and I also feel the “why didn’t I see this coming” or get this ready.. and feel like the doctors think I’m an idiot even though their all very understanding that I’m new lol I just wish I could have all the knowledge of my senior nurses already. And I’m also getting into the bad habit as soon as a patient says for example, their having chest pain all I think of is ok “ekg, iv, labs, get them on the monitor, etc” but I need to actually see each patient individually because everyone is different. Your channel is so inspiring I love it, keep up the great work! ❤️

Im a newish OR nurse. I sht myself every day at work especially when I have to scrub. We dont learn about surgical instruments in nursing school. There are hundreds of instruments I have to remember. Each of them has different names both formal names and the names the surgeons call them. I get so scared when the surgeon accidentally cut into a major artery and we are running around trying to get blood and emergency suture/clamps. Im about to hit my one year in a few months. Looking back, I learned a lot and have come a long way! I surprised where I am right now. There is still so much to learn! One of the biggest and most challenging things working in the OR is co-workers and the lack of autonomy. Surgeons can be very difficult and we often get verbally abused but we dont have to deal with the abuse from patients and family members.

I wish I was following you through my journey. I am currently 6 months in and still feel like i have dumped a lot of my education after taking the NCLEX. I also due to a move chose a job in long term care that I am not very fond of my passion is midwifery and I hesitated to apply to hospitals because everything wanted experience and now hearing you I wish I wouldn't have taken this path because it has caused so much more anxiety and stress due to litigation in that care I can provide in longterm I want to save and heal not be a mediator in the process of aging. love your posts and have been applying for positions that value goals and ER scares me but I may need that push to give me the understanding and support that I do know my role and my education was not for nothing. thank you for your supportive responses to the job and stress that comes along with it!

You are feeling what every new nurse feels! Just keep safety your number one priority. Tele floors are so busy and stressful and patients are only getting sicker. First off, you are gorgeous! Thank you for these videos. I really want to do behavioral health but decided to get into the ER. I start next week, I will be heavily binging your videos and absorbing all I can. Thanks for the tips! 🌸
How did people know about your channel? Did you pop up because of being in the same area? Like I don’t know how an algorithm works and I’ve considered starting myself a channel. I just would be in the same boat and wouldn’t want local people so much seeing my channel. Idk. I am glad you touched on that topic too!

Thank you for sharing your first year as an ER nurse. No matter what anybody say about your CZcams we love 💕 it. Let your haters be your motivators because the more people will see what you are really about. You look very beautiful, knowledge in your profession and like your curly hair it is on point.

You’re right on the whole you don’t need med surg especially if you want to be in a specialty. Ive known I wanted to be in nicu but everyone was pushing the medsurg route and I hate it! Lol I’m finishing up my 2 yr contract soon, getting my BSN and peacing out ✌🏻I hate medsurg 😩

👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽experience is key. Learning to deal with coworkers is a big one. Egotistical coworkers who feels they know it all are the worst. Word of advice for new nurses: be mindful of who you go to for answers to questions, and after you get an answers still use your judgement because you are the nurse. If you have to ask the doctor ask the doctor.

Eventually, I want to be a psych nurse practitioner. However, one thing I've noticed as a patient advocate is that people with mental health problems tend to neglect their other health issues, due to their cognitive difficulties. Do you think it would be practical for me to work in the ER for a while before I go into mental health nursing?
(I've even heard that there are NP's who maintain certifications in both mental health and family practice for this reason.)

When you applied for your ER position, did you do a residency or fellowship program? How many weeks of orientation did you receive? I’m thinking of doing my preceptorship in a local ER or a critical care unit. I want to be challenged and I like how you talked about everyday being different.

Girl you just spoke my life right now. I’m a first semester nursing student working through head to toe assessment. It is hard. I keep beating myself up for forgetting to ask the patient (lab partner-pretend) stuff or mixing up my cranial nerves. How do you build yourself back up? I’m having a hard time with negative self talk.

Amanda Shepard Hi, I know your question is addressed to Alexis, but if i might share some advice or words of encouragement. Im in level 3/4 of my nursing program and head to toe was something I struggled with as well. One thing that has helped me was practicing on other ppl, or even a stuff animal lol. Also i watched other youtubers assessment video. Dont be so hard on yourself. There are some skills that take time to nuture and perfect. The most important thing is that you’re open to learn and adjust along the way. Hope this helps! You got this!

I had to do the same thing I love to talk to people especially strangers so I would say things like sally is requesting this or that and the nurses would be like “who” and then I’d have to say oh room 64 then they would know the patient. I had to stop having long conversations and get my day moving. It as very difficult in the beginning

Hi! First of all, I love your videos lol they inspired me through my nursing school program and now through my career. I’m starting the ER as well, but we don’t have a nurse to pt ratio. In the video you said you could even get 4 patients..... your ER does a nurse to patient ratio?

I am a new grad i finished 6 months in medical surgical and currently feeling so confident about going to ER and stay there permanently as its where i always wanted to be, but right now im just concerned about one thing cuz my rotation instructors are trying to convince my to go for pediatrics rotation for 3 montgs before finally placing me in the ER so what do you think? Is it really necessary to experience peds beds or i would be able to pick it up once i start in ER ?
