  • In this episode I finish off the maintenance and servicing by changing, among other things, the glow plugs, air filters and power steering fluid. I then investigate the swirl flap problem.

    TIPS HERE from another 530d LCI owner. There are 3 types of breather oil separators installed: empty case, toilet paper roll and vortex. The toilet paper roll that is total bs and needs to be upgraded to the vortex type. Yours is empty, same was mine. Dunno why BMW did that, but you should install the vortex type since it will make the breather work properly (separate oil from air duh).
    Also check that the spring and rubber cap/suction valve inside the case are intact and that the rubber is soft. Give it a good clean while you're at it.
    The power steering reservoir has to be changed in a car that old. It has a metal net filter inside that cannot be changed separately. Mine was almost clogged after 13 years and no fluid changes.
    Ceramic grease (or special glow plug grease) for the glow plugs, never copper since the engine head is aluminium.
    Road and race, great content as always!

    The use of copper paste is a bit special, I would be careful with it in aluminum surrounding... but there are also "copper" pastes that do only look like copper but do not have much copper in them.

    Well, the last time I did the glow plugs on mine they certainly didn't come out that easily. From memory, so would need checking, The Beru website for the OE plugs give the shear point in Nm 35Nm I think. Using a torque wrench that measures in both directions ease the plugs out, if more that the torque setting is reached, wind back in, more oil, then back out again.

    Great job again!! I use my 500ml suction gun a lot on jobs on my car, comes in handy for tough to negotiate job's, like in my Bentley designed gear box, total nightmare having three different fill points.
    So the suction gun serves me well in drawing as much as I can extract and then replace in the higher points of access.

    • @oliverb.7860
      @oliverb.7860 Před 4 lety

      Voi Vod I believe it causes electrochemical corrosion in combination with the heads aluminum.

    • @oliverb.7860
      @oliverb.7860 Před 4 lety

      Also the torque values don’t apply anymore because they are for unlubed threads and with paste, the same torque will cause a much greater angle and therefore axial force in the thread because of less friction.

    "Engine up to temp before removing glow plugs" it'll be cold again once you've removed all that plastic. That is a mad amount of plastic to remove just to change an air filter, but I guess if you're BMW and it takes a tech an hour to replace an air filter instead of 10 mins then that's a good earner from all those company car drivers.

    You are a patient man. Where do I start with my e61? Nice to drive when it’s running…Only had it a week and already the most unreliable machine I’ve ever owned. I want to love it but not yet. They went to all that effort with the rust prevention and great engine, 50/50 weight distribution etc etc yet they put the electronics in the lowest point below the waterline destined for destruction as soon as the drain plugs get blocked. Absolutely absurd design that’s totally ruined my respect for the design in their products. I’ve had several BMW motorbikes which were great machines but also very fussy about water ingress. You couldn’t pressure wash them which is mental for an off-road bike designed for mud and sand Even my 7 year old knows electricity and water don’t mix. Had a Toyota Camry with 220k klm and all I ever did was battery, fluids, brake pads and spark plugs. Now that was properly incredible design.
