Putting a New Core on the Deck of a Sailboat

A buddies boat showed signs of a soft deck. After weighing the possibilities, we dived in to expose the rotten deck core. We ended up re-coring the deck from the hull to cabin along the port and starboard sides. We also ended up gel coating the whole topside, laying non-skid, painting the non-skid; basically, a whole topside job. This was a big project that takes more time than one would estimate.
After getting into it a bit, we had Rafael of Carmona Premium Services (carmonapremiumservices@gmail.com; 562.326.8941) take over the rest of the work. We learned a lot from him. We highly recommend him if you need cosmetic and structural work done on your boat in the Los Angeles & OC areas.

looks good, i need to do this but thinking of coming from under the deck, bit trickier to lay up but protected from weather

It does but more so, in the bright California sunshine, reduces glare. True whit is just too bright :)
How are you going to reattach the hardware so that water doesn't get into your new core?
We just bed it down with 4200. f we added a new hole, we epoxied the drilled hole, then re-drilled (after allowing epoxy to soak into new core), and bedded it with 4200. :)
this starts off as a DIY job, but quickly goes to the professional level. Applying gel-coat is not for the DIY guy. Calling in the pros keeps this video unhelpful for me. I couldn't possibly afford it.
Whether DIY or by the pro's there are two ways of doing a project. The steps and work are the same. We were under some time constraints and didn't have enough hands on deck 😁to complete in the required time. I have seen way too many projects go uncompleted by good intents. Don't be scared about gelcoat. I also addressed it in my Topside Paint video. Briefly, if you are comfortable using epoxy paint, then you can do gelcoat (Roll and tip) ...maybe a bit more wet sanding to get the finish right. Watch the video to see how they do it. Learn from the pro's and don't be scared. If you do poor gelcoat work you can sand it down and paint it. Hence, why the vid and wanting DIY'ers to level up their game. Agreed, I couldn't have the pro's work on my boat for that amount of work....but then again, my boat doesn't need that much work 😉 Good luck on your project!

You are correct. I often slip up as I call anything with a catalyst an epoxy :)

Mostly they are from the 70's and 80's. Some of us are softies for the old classics, while other like projects. Occasionally, you'll find a gem ;) One of the buyers is a salvage operator who strips the ballast and metal then crushes the hulls.
