The real trick is that Penn convinced you to forget he is a magician and believe he was a juggler in that act, and then applaud him for being a juggler.
Penn has always said he is “carnie trash”. He graduated clown college, after all. Most of his acts are mentalism, juggling and other miscelanous acts of wonder. Teller has always been the “magician” of the two, and in their shows, he is always the one doing slight of hand, disappearances and such.

*The Reveal:*
*Set up:*
The pack of cards was organized in a way Penn remembered, the shuffle in the beginning was "the juggle", he practiced on that shuffle before. After the shuffle, the pack was organized in the way he remembered every single position of every card. Teller had his own four pack of cards, one for every sign (heart, diamond etc.), And the gimmick of them is a 13 buttons on the other side that slowly pushes a card, and every pack has all 13 cards + fake cards, and all of them with the same sign.
*The Penn part:*
*Illusion:*
In 2:27 Penn shuffled the cards, but didn't really, he took about 15 cards from the top, and mixed them back to the top, which had no effect on the magic since Jimmy cut the pack in the middle.
*The cheat:*
In 2:56 Penn had a peek at the face of his cards, and since he remembers the order of cards, he knew what card Jimmy's going to pick, and how many cards does he has in his hands.
*The signal:* _(only if you're in a team)_
In 3:02 Penn delivers Teller the information he has, he lifts the pack *9* times, and makes a weird shake in his hand that signaled the *hearts* (he had three other pre approved moves that hinted the other three signs), that's how Teller knew it is the *9* of *hearts.*
*The Teller part:*
*The show:*
In 4:05 Teller reaches into his jacket and searched for the *heart* sign pack, he takes it out and opens it up.
*The illusion:*
In 4:17 Teller takes a flower as a distraction from the fact that in the other side, he spins a roller that pulls the *9,* he had 12 other rollers that would've spin the other 12 cards out.
*The end:*
Well unsurprisingly Teller was "right" and Jimmy's card was the *9* of *hearts,* they didn't force the card or faked anything.
*The vote:*
Just watch the video there's nothing to not understand with the votes.. JK lol hope it helped you understand the magic and how magic tricks usually work. Have fun i was the YOYOMAN. ;)

Pemn and Teller are masters of great IDEAS in magic and entertainment..period.
The trick is revealed at 2:55
Penn has memorized the order of the deck and the shuffle he does is false. He instructs Jimmy to cut 'a little more' than half way, this is to make it a bit harder to throw off the audience, and if he messed up the top few cards. Since he knows the exact order of the deck, he sneaks a peek at the bottom of the stack as he turns them over at the 2:55 mark. Since he knows the bottom card is the 9 of Spades for example, and the 9 of Spades is 26, then 9 of Hearts is 27. Teller also knows the order of the deck, and when he hears Penn say '27' he knows the next card would be the 9 of Hearts.
HEARTS*. And you're wrong.
@@CB-xr1eg You're right! I misspelled hearts twice!
But how am I wrong about how the trick was done? Explain please
@@TractorsNStuff I'm sorry but you must know I can't reveal magicians secrets on a public forum. Silly of you to ask really.
There's a real cool thing you can do with cards. Once their in a set order even cutting them chanfes nothing. If its say ace two three six clubs hearts spades diamonds (chased as its called) if you cut it and the six is on top its still ace two there six it just starts with the six. So Penn knows the order, jimmy cuts the cards. Penn sees 1 card and then he knows the next. Regardless of if they were shuffled ahead of time or not.
Oh and as for the shuffle, he didn't riffle it which means the order still never changed.
Once you figure out the trick, the way this trick is performed and the banter surrounding it is top notch. Very nicely done.
Lol I get it
True. The trick itselve is very simple basic magiciansstuff. And Penn is actually telling you how its done. He does the work: and its not that hard and Teller does actually nothing. The banter is genious: because it makes you think theres a lot going on: there are big props: the chair, some juggling wich makes you think that its misdirection. While everything already happened when Jimmy picked the card.
The Build Up, nice analysis, I will take it in count. It is a crucial skill that separates great magic from boring magic. @@marcvdbosch1802
The cards are in a special order and Penn looks at the bottom card at 2:55. Once you know the bottom card, you know all about the picked card card, Teller also knows the number so he's ready to raise the correct card. Once Penn says there are 27 cards, the rest is trivial.
More likely that the back of the cards are marked. To mark a deck you just get a red marker & blot out one spot for each suit, another spot for each number or face & because this is going to be used for the trick they do another mark to number their cards. He then signals to teller the number & suit in code so it's not obvious, could be a hand gesture or some specific word/words he says.
Nope
More easy than that
Penn pulls out the deck wich has 27 cards above the 9 of harts, than penn shuffles but about 15 cards than pulls back above the 9 of harts if u look closely, the card above the 9 of hearts has a bending so that jimmy easily take that cut without thinking, than the trick is done teller did nothing
Here's how it works, the cards are stacked and with some maths, you can work out how many cards you're holding (check out scam school) Penn looks at the card when you changes hands and can work out what Jimmy's card is. I've seen this trick twice now and Penns patter changes meaning he's using code to tell the person hidden in the chair what Jimmy's card is and the person in the chair gets the card stock to the weighted pulldown. Notice teller isn't just standing like he normally does and that chair is very big and can easily hide someone. Also, teller isnt holding the cards the full time and theyre out of view for most of the trick.
The cards are set up in a certain order at 2:56 Penn sees the bottom card. He now knows what card follows so he knows what card Jimmy cut to. He also knows how far down. He codes the card to the person sitting in Tellers humongous chair who sets up the 9 of hearts to be the card to come up. That assistant is the one who hands the big deck to Teller through a hole in the chair. Well that's my guess. You even hear Penn use the word Heart at 3:42.
It's not a deck where every other card is a 9 of hearts because he has Jimmy count the cards face up on the table and if every other card was a 9 of hearts Jimmy would notice that. But he wouldn't notice a set up order deck.
after he says heart, the rest of the sentence is also 9 words
If you count up the words after he says heart, it's 9 words, and after that he says 'just hold that right there", as if "stop".
Neat trick though.
Nope...
The first deck is all 9 of hearts.
When Jimmy takes the top card of the bottom cut and puts it in his pocket Penn swaps the top cut for 27 cards from a real deck without a 9 of hearts.
So.. Jimmy counts 27...
Teller only ever has to reveal a 9 of hearts.
Meanwhile Penn swaps the bottom cut for the rest of the real deck.
@@dougaltolan3017 Wrong.
@@Sebster85 🔔🔚
2:57 penn glimpses the bottom card. This shows the entire deck has been stacked in a pre arranged order so that Penn knows the card and position in the deck. By glimpsing the bottom card, Penn knows the next card is 9 Hearts AND the prearranged system associates each card with a number equal to its position. Then it’s a communication or code system to transfer the two digits of the position to their assistant who is hiding in the big chair and loads the card into the big box. Note this is the ONLY card in the large box… bc the box is simply a mechanical widget to raise the card. This shows the incredible detail, skill, memory work, practice, and sheer gall P&T have gone to to create this illusion. Damn good.
when you know the trick, it makes the performance more hilarious and cool, that's the beauty of penn and teller. He claims that "he has to use this deck of cards" which is true because the deck is prepared. he claims that what he did was difficult, when it was incredibly simple. and he claims that magic is all lies, which he confirmed by lying about his role in the trick from the very beginning. love the meta humor than they use
I was waiting for Fallon to ask Penn if that was a real shuffle he was doing, and for Penn to answer "yes" as the first lie of the bit.
There’s no communication system, they literally get Jimmy to shout out how many cards he’s taken out 😂😂
@@T1J Wouldn't say it's that easy, you still have to remember the exact order of 52 cards. Or at least of the bits in the middle - and associate them with the number of cards that were cut then. Not as hard as he claims it to be, but i'm pretty sure if you gave 100 people 60 minutes to learn the trick, 90 would still fail it.
@@asdfasdf-mn8iu You don't have to remember the cards you could have to have a system which tells you which card is where. The simplest system is to have the cards in suit and number order.

Penn looks younger! love ya Jimmy , from new Zealand
Well, he is younger than Teller by at least five years, maybe seven or so.
He absolutely cut the deck in a specific place. Very subtle, but works every time.
Wonderful act! Thanks!
But the BIG "event" was Penn's new hairstyle!
Absolutely looks great! It's a keeper! Appreciate it! Thanks!
Penn does NOT shuffle the cards. He just pretends to. They are ordered. After the cut he looks at the bottom card and immediately works out how many cards he has as indicated by the bottom card. He also knows what the next card is because the cards are all ordered. Teller doesn't know what it is and he NEVER knows what it is. After Penn announces that there will be 27 cards the assistant concealed under the chair then knows what card he must get ready for its grand appearance in Teller's hands. Penn asked Jimmy to cut to the middle or MORE because he needed to give the assistant time to arrange the big deck in readiness for the reveal. Jimmy's counting the cards to a number greater than 26 gives the assistant the time he needs. The large deck is, by this time ready to be extracted from the hole in the chair at his right side.
The order is Si Stebbins order. I would also assume Jimmy was instructed to cut near the middle so that it should only be 1/13 cards to prepare instead of 1/52.
Yep, at 2:56 you can see Penn taking a quick glance at the bottom card.
Strongside and the card he turns over looks like the 6 of clubs
When storytelling is actually doing magic! Well done Penn and Teller
I really enjoyed this one! Love Penn & Teller!
Such a great act as always
My favorite part is that it is very hard to tell how this trick was done as there are a TON of false leads.
Penn keeps his hands looking like there is a deck switch, did he false shuffle, he says things like “Keep in your Heart” while also flashing the number 10 then a 1, and while he’s talking to Jimmy, Teller keeps on looking at Penn’s left hand which keeps giving numbers, Teller’s turn then distracts the camera and Jimmy which could allow another deck switch when nobody is looking.
And because it’s Penn and Teller, we have no clue to know which ones of these were actually false flags to make you lose if you were in the Hot Seat for Penn and Teller fool us.
and of course, for all we know, they forced him to put the 9 of hearts in his pocket and gave him an illusion of choice
It's much, much simpler. The only signal is when he says "27."
@@reaganpratercallen60 oh it is 100% without question a force. That much is obvious, it's how the force works that is the question. I can think of obvious ones, but even if my guesses were miraculously right, it still takes a crazy amount of skill to cheat that well.
@@darthrex354 Its not a force. There is no surefire way to force a card that someone cuts to. There is a man inside the chair that puts whatever card jimmy has in his pocket into the big deck that will make that card rise up.
@@cardmysteries8176
There is a way to force it. Use a deck with all the cards the same and then switch decks. Notice that no one saw the cards till after Jimmy put the forced card in his pocket THEN Penn handled the cards. THEN the cards were seen.
If I were to do this trick, I'd memorize the deck's shuffle, false shuffle as Penn, read the bottom card at 2:55 , have Jimmy count the cards out to buy time, have a person hidden in Teller's chair put the correct card in the right spot then hand the big deck up to teller between the cushion, have teller move the correct card up, have the hidden person in chair set off confetti canon. Why do they need an entire platform for this chair? It'd be easier to just have the chair on the stage, and why does the chair need to have fabric all the way down? There's something hidden in there, and the addition of a riser suggests to me that it's a person.
This is it exactly. When you're used to seeing those gimmicks all of those things immediately flag what's going on. The robe on Teller is also a prop that helps cover the access hatch to retrieve the giant deck of cards. You watch how casually he pulls it out like it's coming straight through a slot in the chair, it's no on his person before he needs it.
Yup. The giant prop chair is kind of a give away once you start looking at it properly
They're the best! Well done!!!!!
What was that sound at 2:22 when he pulled the cards out of the deck 😂
The back of the cards is marked with the number of each card. Once he says the number, the small person hidden inside Teller's chair inserts the correct card into the trick deck, then hands it to teller through the gap in the chair.
BUT THE DECK WAS SHUFFLED?
WAAAAAAAAAY to complicated. Actually the number is distraction tolead you away its even simpler !
@@priyansh1210 It was a controlled shuffle. This trick was done via deck memorization.
@@priyansh1210rewatch the shuffle some time. He only does seven moves, and he's probably only taking one card each time, then he gathers all the cards back up again. All he actually did was reverse the order of the first seven cards
And that's easy mode. A good card magician can "shuffle" a deck all day long, and still end up with every single card back where it started
Penn's shuffle at the beginning is a fake shuffle that doesn't really alter the position of the cards (or if it did, it would be just the few at the top). Thus, the deck order has not been altered. Penn has committed to memory the order of the cards and thus, after Jimmy's cut and placing the deck on his hand, he flips it over really quick to see the bottom card. This allows him to know exactly how many cards are in his hand and what is the card that Jimmy has placed in his pocket. Teller also knows the order so after Penn tells everyone its 27 cards, Teller knows exactly to pull the 9 of hearts out.
Alen Gong there is probably someone in the chair editing the giant deck of cards after hearing how many cards Penn had.
Penn and Teller are my favorite magicians and always will be.
I remember the 9 of Hearts gag deck as a kid. Wild stuff.
Anyone else noticed that Jimmy was wearing “lifts” to make himself not that short compared to Penn.
3:14 Jimmy Fallen has an actual band sitting there and he just chose to count. A band's job is making counting interesting.
Fallon made the counting worse than it actually is
These two are just awsome!
These guys are the absolute best!!
Teller: *breaths*
Jimmy Fallon: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
The brilliance of Penn and Teller's magic tricks is that you never care how they are done. They are more entertaining than they are magical.
But if you want to know how it's done... I believe it is a stacked deck. Jimmy cuts the cards. Penn sneaks a peak at the bottom card of his packet, which was directly above jimmy's card. That tells him what Jimmy's card is. Then I believe he secretly tells Teller which card it is. Another comment suggested that when he says "Remember in your heart" it was to communicate the suit to teller. I think there may be something going on with the hand gestures Penn does around 3:51. He actually does do the ASL sign for 9 many times, which may just be a natural hand gesture but it's hard to say. Then Teller just uses a big gimmick deck to rise the card.
In their masterclass, Penn actually said that when they come up with an idea for an effect, they pretend to perform it as if the magic is real and observe their own mannerisms to find out what they do naturally and what they can get away with. For instance, Penn naturally puts his hands in his pockets often and talks with his hands while Teller often keeps his arms down at his sides. So I can totally see Penn using his natural hand gestures to conceal a secret hand gesture.
If the deck is stacked and they know the order, Penn wouldn’t need to signal anything, as Teller would also know what the 28th card is.
@@caioreis279 oh good point. If they both know the order.

Can;t wait to see the updated VR version of the Desert Bus. :)
“Remember in your heart”, *holds up 9 fingers.*
12kd nice catch
When did he hold up 9 fingers? I didn't catch that
He held up 6 fingers tho. At approx 3:40
Don't think so. If this were the jack of spades, how would he have communicated this?
He stood still till jimmy got to the number 9 then moved forwards and started moving backwards and forwards to make it look natural - then ‘remember in your heart’
Penn truly is a magician. He sold an encyclopedia to Joey Tribbiani.
Gustavo Siqueira I was looking for this reference..
Absolute legends.
I wish I could be taught specifically by these two fantastic humans
-"That is how you do it!"
Jimmy Fallon 2019
The real magic would be making an American audience not applaud at everything.
There’s prompts letting the audience know when to clap and when not to. They wouldn’t clap or laugh unless told to
nah, the real magic would be making some european on the internet not be smug.
Joke House I’m not being smug, I’m being snarky.
@@0554joe "They wouldn’t clap or laugh unless told to" they are not braindead, jesus.
I’m joking btw
They are such a great duo :D
This will be the only video i watch from any of the late night Jimmies
Penn “shuffled” the cards himself. It means he knows the order of the cards. He then insisted on Jimmy cutting the deck in the middle. Penn looks at the bottom card so he knows the number of cards in his hand, it also reveals the card to Teller. Pretty simple trick.
I'm kind of disappointed that I wasn't able to figure that out myself. I knew the shuffle was a fake, but I somehow missed him looking at the bottom card.
I'm sure this answer is easy too, but how does Teller make sure that the correct card is on the rising mechanism? I'm guessing it has to do with Penn saying the number and Teller priming it while Jimmy's counting.
@@trickytreyperfected1482 Based on where he pulled it out from it was under the couch which can hide numerous decks and since Penn specifically said to get as close to the middle of the deck as possible it seems like he wanted to limit the possible choices. That deck of cards is so massive so I wouldn't be surprised if it were actually a printer or it could push out several different cards based on some type of user input.
Penn is so humble, perfect example of a true Newfoundlander
Still KILLING it!
Their last game was Penn and Teller: Smoke and Mirrors. (S&M)
To be honest i felt like the applause for penn was more than for teller lol, but i understand what they did try with that performance so great anyways :)
Seeing Penn without long hair is so strange. I’ve just always known him to have long hair!
Loved these guys since the early90s
Jimmy is so cute!! “Let them applaud” “oh i got that”
Jimmy likes to put his forehead on the floor when he laughs
Penn, will you please run for president? you guys are awesome though.
I fuckin love Penn and Teller!!! I love how penn says “I know what happened, but I’m not gonna tell you” great line
Great camera work for this trick.
the real trick is to get you applauding for lying cheating and swindeling, its hahahilarious
Penn was lying from the start, he couldn't tell by the weight of the cards how many there were. He forced the 9 of hearts and he knew before hand that there were 27 cards.
@@fireblade2681 but how??? Jimmy was the one who cut it.
Net Lag he memorized the order of the cards, so he knew how much more were left
Teller reminds me of thing 1 and thing 2 from the cat in the hat
They’re awesome.
3:03 lmao asking Jimmy Fallon to look you in the eyes isn't enough try adding "without laughing, grinning, or snickering" lol i just expect Jimmy to crack up too quick xd funny guy
"Remember in your heart"
Part of Penn communicating to Teller the card lol
he doesn't need to, they've both memorized the deck order
Any chance for a e remaster of Penn and Teller's Sega CD game with Desert Bus Online?
0:56 - The most clever abbreviation.
4:33 holy shit the card magically glistened from a 9 hearts to a 9 hearts.
